Grace Hamilton is the prepper pen-name for a bad-ass, survivalist momma-bear of four kids, and wife to a wonderful husband. After being stuck in a mountain cabin for six days following a flash flood, she decided she never wanted to feel so powerless or have to send her kids to bed hungry again. Now she lives the prepper lifestyle and knows that if SHTF or TEOTWAWKI happens, she’ll be ready to help protect and provide for her family.

Combine this survivalist mentality with a vivid imagination (as well as a slightly unhealthy day dreaming habit) and you get a prepper fiction author. Grace spends her days thinking about the worst possible survival situations that a person could be thrown into, then throwing her characters into these nightmares while trying to figure out "What SHOULD you do in this situation?"

It’s her wish that through her characters, you will get to experience what life will be like and essentially learn from their mistakes and experiences.

6-MONTHS AFTER THE SOLAR FLARE THE CHALLENGES TAKES THEIR TOLL ON THE MORRIS FAMILY GROUP

Living in the mountains outside Spokane, Washington, the Morris family and their little group deal with not only the aftereffects of an Solar Flare that takes out most of the electronics, vehicles, cellphones, and communications. If worrying about not having electricity, the ability to pick up groceries and essentials at the local store, no running vehicles, they have to deal with weather conditions living in the mountains.

As the group handles their preparations to survive the harshness of living in the mountain region, they are hit with heavy rains and mud slides which sets them behind in their preparations for freezing temperatures and the harshness of the up and coming winter.

The Morris family and their little group also make alliances with neighboring communities and set up trading and a possible alliance to help with a deadly group of thugs known throughout the mountainous region as Raiders.
This groups only desire is to take, destroy, and kill anyone who has what they want. It doesn't matter if it's a pet, man, woman, or child. If they have what they want, they take while leaving a wave of destruction in their path.

This book is well written, suspenseful, and intriguing. The characters are clearly defined, and you'll find yourself routing for them from the get-go.

I found with this one I got so angry with Megan. I get why she was upset, Caitlin was missing, but with the stunt she pulled it divided the group, which was not a good thing. I was glad to see things end fairly well for everyone. This group seemed to make some allies, which they will need. I'm still on the fence with the green lady and you know the raiders will be back, the only thing will be how bad things get when they show up.

After reading and loving Dark Retreat the rest of this series was instantly put onto my "must read" list! So saying I was looking forward to reading Dark Hunt which is Bk2 in the EMP Lodge series is a kind of understatement. Though I had other titles on my kindle to read I felt the pull to purchase Dark Hunt and revisit with the characters I quickly grew to love in Dark Retreat.

So the cover of Dark Hunt is a view from the side rear of the Lodge. We can see the corner of the Lodge with a male figure who is holding a rifle and looking out on two people walking away with a dog. This also fits a scene within the book really well however I am not going to tell you more about it and that would involve spoilers! So you will just have see if you realise which scene the cover depicts when you read the book yourself!

The genres I have seen listed for this book are Post-Apocalytic, Survival, Action and Adventure and I would say they all fit the content of this book well.

This book begins with everyone being relatively happy in their surroundings nevertheless still cautious of any visitors, or anyone from another settlement. With no real end in sight to their way of life those that live in the Lodge are thinking about building extra rooms and/or even an extra one or two buildings. Thought is also being put in to prepping for the winter. The plan is to try hunting larger animals and preserve the meat for the leaner months of winter, as well as using animal pelts for warmth of course.

Megan and Wyatt are becoming even closer, however Megan is conscious of making time for just herself and Caitlin together too. Caitlin is still happy with the Morris clan and has certainly grown to love Wyatt and the rest of them! Megan has settled in but is always aware of the fact no one knows what is round the corner these days, so she understandably wants to take part in the hunting trips keeping some of her independence, passing on more of her tracking and trapping knowledge in exchange for herbal remedy knowledge from Wyatts mum who clearly now treats her as a daughter in law and accepts Caitlin as another grandchild too.

It's during one these mother & daughter trips out that both Megan and Caitlin get caught up in the increasingly turbulent storms that seem to be occurring more often lately. Both Megan and Caitlin are hurt. When Megan regains consciousness it is apparent she is badly hurt. She has either broken or badly sprained her ankle/leg. An injury such as this in the times they are all living in can ultimately lead to death so she is in a lot of pain and then when she realises Caitlin isn't with her or in the immediate vicinity the panic soon sets in.

When Megan is found and Caitlin is still missing she is devastated and desperate to go out and search for her. But the injured Megan can only sit and wait or the others to return when they search for any signs of Caitlin. Where could she be? Could someone have taken her? Could Kyle's group be behind this? Or has someone simply taken an injured Caitlin in and is giving her first aid treatment. The fact Wyatt keeps returning from searching empty handed causes a rift between him and Megan. The sad thing is he and his family are as desperate to find Caitlin as Megan is!

So new alliances are made, another lone survivor who has extremely valuable skills meets up with the Morris Clan, but they also hear of a dangerous ruthless group travelling near to the area they live. Can the small survivor groups manage to ignore or fight off these ruthless raiders or should they perhaps band together and bring an end to the ruthless gangs raiding spree's?

There were the great characters from book one such as Wyatt, his mum, brother etc with the addition of a few more such as "the green woman" who is seemingly impossible to find and quick at raiding others for things she needs. I warmed to this character and hope to see more of her in the rest of the series. She could be a key person in bringing down those who wish to take what they want and hurt or kill whoever gets in their way.

Wyatt's mum and her herbal remedies are once again needed in throughout this book. I have become attached to the whole Morris clan really. I'm thinking maybe the "green woman" may end up a romantic interest for one of the Morris clan but I will have to read more of the series to find out what happens there.

We also meet Kyle's brother again in this book, though he seems to have forgiven the Morris clan for the death of his brother. Can he be trusted? Or not? I'm not sure I would fully trust him. Then there's the people in his settlement, if not best friends maybe they will be a group that can be bartered with for skills or produce.

My immediate thoughts upon finishing this book were, Wow this series is going to be amazing if it continues like this! I actually read the first 93% in one reading session and was fairly irritated when I had to put my kindle down to go to sleep! So of course I finished the rest of the book the following night. I am definitely looking forward to reading both more o this series and other series by this author.

Another fast-paced five-star read. The added bonus with these books is that you learn survival tips and tricks that can be used in real-world situations.
I am so glad I discovered this author!

Great read!"

Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The fact that there are educational things in it only add to the punch. I absolutely love finding things in this genre that teach me something I didn't know. I just wish the author would write the recipes for herbal medicine and "how to's" on making things out at the end like she did Caitlin's birthday cake. Highly informative. Recommend reading this series for sure!!!!!

A Good Story With Some Frustration

3.75 out of 5 stars

It's been some time since the EMP* turned out all the lights and threw the world into the dark.  The cabin that everyone is staying in has kept everyone safe and sound for the time being. But now, a routine hunting trip took a turn for the worst when the weather changes and throws Megan and her new friends into a whole new dynamic.

The story in Dark Hunt was pretty enjoyable.  Everything was a little 'typical' for a Post-Apocalyptic book with a few exceptions.  Normally when you sneak up on another camp they shoot first and ask questions later.  When they got to another camp in this book they seemed to be welcomed with open arms.  Things just seemed to be a little too easy.  Granted, I've read much "easy" books with way less enjoyable characters before, but sometimes I want to see a group of people struggling.

Megan as a character started to rub me the wrong way in this book.  I can't tell if Hamilton was trying to write her this way or if I'm starting to just not like her personality.  She is the definition of running blindly into danger without even thinking about it.  When things start to seem like they're going to take too long -- she just takes off (like a child) running into the darkness trying to save what she has left.  Numerous times this almost has her killer or severely injured (or injured worse than she already was).

I'm happy that the "typical" PA romance took a backseat in Dark Hunt.  This was more about family and what people would do to save family than the actual "new love" that the characters potentially have.

Overall -- I like the series.  It's different enough from the other PA books that I read that I've been enjoying it.  Megan was starting to rub me the wrong way in this one, but the other characters were really enjoyable like before.  People were a little too trusting and I wonder if that will lead to some other issues in later books. I do have at least two more books in this series in my queue, so I'm curious where Hamilton takes the story. I hope that Megan grows as a person and starts to make safer and more adult choices.

*In my last review, I wrote that Hamilton messed up by calling the CME an EMP.  She really only does it once or twice in Dark Hunt so it bothered me a lot less in this one.  I just wish that there was a mini-edit to change EMP to CME in all these books.  I know that the narrations would have to change too, but it's wrong.

I enjoyed the first book but thought things were a little too easy for Megan, but I still decided to give book 2 a go to see if the series would redeem itself. Well, it did a bit. This one was more tense and action packed, but I still felt... I don't know, everything was, again, still too easy.

Plot wise, it's a lot more fast paced than book 1. Megan and Caitlin decide to go out hunting, but a storm comes in and they fall down a cliff. Megan loses consciousness and when she awakes she realises she can't see Caitlin. She's hurt too so searching for her is hard. Meanwhile Wyatt feels like something is wrong and goes in search of Megan. They find her badly hurt but can't find Caitlin. Taking Megan home, Wyatt knows he will have to do everything in his power to bring Caitlin back!

As I said, the plot was faster, but there were a few things I didn't like. One of which is a spoiler so I'm not going to talk about (Caitlin). Another thing is the fact that I disliked Megan in this!! She acted like a spoiled little so and so. I know she is out of her mind with worry but why would you treat Wyatt like that?? God forbid but if something were to happen like that to any of my boys, I'd be frantic and out of my mind, but I'd also know that people can only do their best, and Wyatt was going above and beyond for her, yet she blanked him. Her decisions left a lot to be desired!!

Wyatt was and is awesome. He does what he can for the people he loves!! I would love to see a bit more of him in the books. The rest of the family are great too. We get to see some more new characters too.

In all, a good story. I really hope the author realises that not everything would come easy during the apocalypse. I have yet to see them really struggle, which, unless you were a prepper, would be impossible. Though I reckon even being a prepper you would still struggle some.

Andrew Tell was clear and easy to listen to. He has plenty of tones and voices and read this well.

I was voluntarily provided this audiobook for free from the author, narrator, or publisher. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts.

Like the way the author has one main issue for the book, along with survival issues peppered throughout. Caitlin and Megan are out hunting and get caught in a horrible storm. They take a spill down the mountain and Caitlin is lost. They spend several weeks looking for her and make their way to the camp of Kyle's (killed in book 1 by Megan) to see if they took Caitlin in revenge. They turn out to be good people and do not have Caitlin. They mention the Green Women who lives down the way and steals from them occasionally. Turned out she had rescued Caitlin and was trying to heal her and then grew a bit attached to her. Wyatt is caught by a bear trap in the search for Caitlin. The Green Women, Brenda, is military and has medical training. She is brought to the lodge to help Wyatt.
All is well that ends well.

Great series that keeps you reading all the way to end.... And then to the next book!

I like this series about a very determined mother that would do anything for her child - *spoiler alert* don't read until you finish the book. We've all been there and know the gripping fear of when you can't find your child in the store or playground - your frantic and panicking and praying to God for just one more chance to hold your child... Begging and pleading in your mind and to anyone that will listen - and when you finally do find your child it's like the heavens have opened up and all is right in your world. Grace Hamilton nailed this emotion right out of the ballpark! And now I'm off to the next book!

Love this book

I have often thought of being a prepped in case of something like EMP, of course other than stock piling food, water and the basic first aid kit I really wouldn't know the 1st thing about surviving. Grace Hamilton has opened my eyes and I'm ready to start improving on some skills that could prove invaluable in any situation needed. I just love the characters and the way the book is written. It's been a long time since I've read books like I am these EMP Lodge series books. Turn page turners, I will hate it when I've read them all. I will miss them. Kudos to you Grace for being such a great writer. Thank you.

Great continuation of the series

While I am intrigued with the storyline, it really bugs me that, there are, so many commas, in totally unnecessary places. Misspellings are expected in these indie books but for crying out loud can’t you use spellcheck? Also, since it appears these books have been out for awhile couldn’t you have someone do some minor editing? May be is one word in the context that is used. Some one likewise is someone. I don’t mean to be rude because your stories show so much imagination that I want to keep reading!

Excellent book and very good series.

I've enjoyed the books in this series, but Megan is a bit annoying in that her stubborn insistance on being self reliant keeps putting herself and others in danger. While I understand her attempt to put the problems of her past behind her, she takes it too far. There is a difference between being stubborn, and being ridiculous. There are times she is ridiculous. Over all, I understand why she acts the way she does, but it's time she put it behind her.

Dark Hunt. Grace Hamilton

Survival is starting to become second nature. Instincts are being honed daily. Even the small children know the risks and behave accordingly. They are growing up fast in an alien world. Megan and her daughter Catlin have gone hunting. It's Catlins first time. A sever storm suddenly erupts and they become separated. Megan is injured and her daughter is missing. Now the story unfolds. New friends are made as well as new enemies. Non stop action!!!Another great excellent read in this series!!

I love the story. I love most of the character, but Megan annoys me so much. I believe I got a different editing than the finished product. When I was reading on kindle cloud reader some things were different than on my kindle itself. Than kind of took me out of the story a bit. Every time Megan decides things aren’t going the way she wanted or as quickly as she likes, she gets angry and does it anyway. This almost always causes something bad to happen. Otherwise the book was great.

Good read, with characters you feel like you get to know, sympathize with

The characters are well developed, and you feel familiar with while you read onwards. Good survival information in the book as well, if here and there, seems a little vague, but that's where your own research can take over. The situations feel credible, not exaggerated with a super hero type creation, in that, we read about regular people. They fear, they laugh, and face an unknown world. I look forward to continuing onward with the series.

Book Review:
“Dark Hunt (EMP Lodge Series Book 2) by Grace Hamilton
There were some interesting twists in this novel, among them were the identity of the ‘green lady’ and the relationship with a small group of survivors in a nearby settlement.
Among the pluses in the story is the fact that Grace Hamilton gives survival clues and advice. Preppers can learn and/or review tips based on this book.
Great read! I plan to read the whole series.

Fast paced story of a pair of survivors;

The two of them fled the chaos of a lawless city in a changed world. They learned when to trust from a group whose mission was survival. This new story has them learning more lessons in trust and survival in a world that doesn't give makeup tests.

The EMP Lodge Series: Books 1 to 3
by Grace Hamilton and Andrew Tell
Good, but not my favorite – perhaps because the narration was not the best. The authors took time to include now narrow-minded humans can be, instead of everyone always knowing exactly the correct thing to do. I probably would have enjoyed it more if I had read it instead of listening to it.

This is the second book in the EMP Lodge series. Unfortunately this book continues in the same fashion of the first - very slow. Thus far each book has focused on a single event in excessive detail.

As I said in my review of the first book, it's not a bad story, but it's a low return on the reader's investment of time.

I'm moving into book 3 tomorrow.

The World is a mess

EMP destruction, family that stay together are survivor's. MS. Hamilton is awesome at creating being her characters to life. The story will bring you home for the future, however it will bring reality. Read all Grace Hamilton's series. It will be time we'll spent.

I hated this book; I will not read another book by this author. It is like the author does not know or understand men, or women, or mothers. I guess some people could act like these people in this book, but I have never met those people. Book one was ok. I thought it would get better...no, no, in fact, it got so much worse.

I love this genre of books but was fed up with the books where there is no focus on survival and survival skills and only mindless violence is the whole story. Although this book series also has violence but there is a good portion where people are focusing on survival by using various survival skills. The writing is ok, could have been better. But I liked this series and will recommend.

Worth Getting Hooked On

Book 2 is wonderful. The pace with which the storyline continues is just right for me. New challenges and new characters are introduced in a way that makes sense. I am about to start the next one. My favorite new character is the Green Woman!
