Dag, ik ga vrijheid halen
Michiel van Maalen, de vader van Aurelia, ontdekt op een dag dat hij het verkeerde leven leeft. Hij besluit aan zijn gevoel van onvrede toe te geven; alles moet anders. Abrupt verlaat hij zijn vrouw en dochters en begint aan een nieuw leven in de Hoorn van Afrika, waar hij een vrij land wil stichten, zonder bemoeizucht en belastingen. Aurelia probeert uit alle macht haar vader te begrijpen. Uiteindelijk reist ze zelfs af naar zijn nieuwe wereld. In dit zeer persoonlijke verhaal reconstrueert Aurelia de avonturen van haar vader in dit verre Afrika en laat ze zien welke impact Michiels onconventionele keuzes hebben op de levens van haar moeder, haar zussen en haar zelf.

Interessant levensverhaal, daarom las ik door. De beste man zelf kan ik niet uitstaan. 2.5/5

Excellent story! The English translation is coming out soon. This novel encapsulates the life of a man with a simple mission - to go and fetch freedom. But political barriers and ties to his loving family make this more difficult than he initially assumed.
One day Micheal van Maalen sets off to the parched deserts of Somalia. After a career at the EEC and a commonplace lifestyle in Belgium, this loving fathers feels need for change. Through archived letters and remembered dialogue, the author – who is Micheal’s daughter – shares her thoughts on growing up with a freedom-fetching dad. She described a father as an African adventurer, an ideological theorist, but most importantly, as a dad.
The plot jumps across different perspectives. The reader gets to see through the mind of Micheal, but also his wive, ex-wive and daughters. The first half was a bit slow to read, but the second half is highly engaging. The authors writing style is detailed but precise, filled with emotion.
One may assume this is a simple family novel. But there is much more too the story – love, forgiveness and guilt – written and remembered by Aurelia van Maalen

Wonderlijk verhaal over een zeer eigenzinnige, vrijheid zoekende vader en de liefde voor hem, ondanks alles, van zijn dochters en ex-vrouw.
