With her heart and soul already claimed, could there be room for another in her life?
When Bay’s infatuations bring Spectra to the attention of Essence and put her life at risk, he must learn that sometimes sacrificing the ones you love is the only way to save them.
"Spectra will get your blood pumping and your heart racing with the exciting action as well as the steamy romance." - Allie D.
"I am in love with both Bay and Mercury after reading this book. Spectra is one lucky lady to keep the attention of those two hunks. I wished I could trade places with her on more than one occasion. " - Laura B

Spectra was nothing what I expected. With that being said, I really enjoyed it. Something about the world building and the uniqueness just worked for me; although it did take me quite a while before I understood what was going on and it all clicked into place.
The romance is quite hot but it is also open, leading to many sexual encounters. You are not sure whether you should be routing for Alexander, Merc or Bay and in the end it was great to route for both…because one thing Spectra was full of was sex. I do admit I did end up skimming some of those scenes.
Spectra is a unique urban fantasy that steams up the pages while pulling you into a world unlike any other.
I received this ARC copy of Spectra from Inkitt. This is my honest and voluntary review. Spectra is set for publication Feb 22, 2017.
My feelings towards Spectra by Ebony Olson are rather mixed. I’m not quite sure how I feel about it. As shown by the four star rating I have given the book, I enjoyed it. However, I didn’t come to love it in the way I had expected I would. It was completely different from what I had imagined it would be, and whilst this is a great thing, I’m not entirely sure how I feel about everything that unfolded in the story. It was different but I’m not sure if it was right for me.
Okay, so I’m not making much sense. I’ll try to amend that now, in a full review.
Spectra has a number of great aspects to it, things that leave you wanting more of the story. The main thing is the world building. It is very different to what you see in most paranormal romance stories nowadays. You can see glimmers of the norm, but this is very much a story unlike any other. The creatures we’re introduced to have aspects of their own, allowing us to see a new kind of paranormal system unfold. Or so it seems until you start to understand the world properly, at which point you realise quite a lot of what we’re seeing is just new names and altered details of creatures we already know. This is perfectly fine, though, as we’re pulled into the story and the creatures slowly come to light as we make our way through the story.
At the same time, this did cause me some issues. For quite some time I felt as though I didn’t quite understand the creatures in the world. Things weren’t quite as clear-cut as I usually like them to be, which distracted me from the story more than it should have. Once things clicked into place in my mind, I found I enjoyed the way the world worked; I just wish the world building had been clearer at the start so that I could understand all that was happening. I understand the lack of clarity in regards to our female lead, as an air of mystery is intended for her, but I wanted to understand the world a little bit better than I did. It was such a quick read, that I really do feel as though the details pertaining to the creatures of the world could have been a bit more clear-cut at the start.
This is just my opinion, though, as I’m a stickler for understanding worlds down to the tiniest details. Many will love the world building – and whilst I’m not saying it was bad, it simply wasn’t for me.
This brings me nicely to my next point: the romance. I’m not entirely sure if the romance was for me. I really enjoyed how it went against the norm. Honestly, it was so interesting to see romance done in the way it was in this story. However, I’m extremely picky when it comes to my romance reads. The way the romance developed within this story wasn’t quite for me. I’ve put that aside when rating the book, though, hence why it was given a four star rating. Despite not falling head over heels for the way in which the romantic aspect of this story played out, I really did enjoy how different it was to most of the romance stories out there. It was something new, something refreshing, and I really appreciate that.
Honestly, I know the story won’t be for everyone because this isn’t your usual romance story. Throughout you’re left curious as to how things will play out, and the ending wasn’t at all what I expected. I really do appreciate how the author went against the conventional in her choices, and it certainly makes for an interesting read. Whether people will enjoy it or not is another matter. I appreciated it, I liked how it was different, but I wasn’t crazy about it. Nevertheless, as a whole, it made for an interesting story. I just think people should be aware before going into this story that the romance does not play out the way it so often does.
Overall, though, it was an interesting read. I found myself addicted, curious as to what would come next. I feel as though it was set up in such a way that it is unclear whether we will get any more stories with this cast, but I would like to see another one. After all, there are certain details I want to know more about and I feel as though more adventures with this cast could make for a lot of fun.
An interesting read, for sure. Very much something different.
As a final note, I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with a copy in exchange for a review.
Spectra is a conflicting read for me. I loved that I finally found one novel with an open end relationship and Polygamy (and it is not portrayed to be wrong) which is awesome and unique in itself. I understood and liked the ideas of sorcerer's having a balance and yeah Spectra's character as well. But.. This book focused too much on the relationship and erotic scenes than it did on the plot line and that I did not enjoy. I would have liked more about those supernatural creatures, and a huge premise build up with a complicated plot. But what turned out is a simple paranormal romance that's a good enough one time read. I understood the toxic relationship between Spectra and Alexander.. And the need for that real relationship between her and Mercury. Well then Bay comes and complicates things. He's a predator. She does not like their kind. Yet. Things turn out different than what is expected. It is not a story of power struggle and all these men trying to dominate her. Which in turn makes her a strong character who can make her own decisions but is also moved by her basic feelings and desires. In the end I just have to say I liked this book but it's not something incredible or mind blowing. You can have this for some light entertaining read but don't expect too much from it. 3 stars.
When I started reading Spectra, I went into it thinking that it was going to be one of those paranormal romances that focuses more on the sex than the story. Boy, was I wrong. While sex does get mainlined for a while, the real story ends up being the relationships that Spectra has with Bay, Merc and Alexander and, of course, the Essence storyline (which was fascinating).
Spectra was a tough chick. She was dealt a crap hand in life. Her sister was killed by a predator (think vampire/were animal), her mother just couldn’t deal and committed suicide when Spectra was 14. Then she is date raped after her college boyfriend slips her a Rufie and she dies from an allergic reaction to it. She is brought back to life and she makes it her life’s mission to help those who can’t help themselves (victims be it of abuse or other things).
Alexander was so sweet at first and then he morphed into a jerk. I was kinda taken aback when he did the 180 because it went against how he was portrayed. But when it was revealed why he morphed into a jerk, I wanted to reach into the book and smack him. Put it this way: Can’t have your cake and eat it too!!!
Next to Spectra, Merc was my favorite character in the book and he was a perfect fit with Spectra. They’re relationship was a little strange (totally open, both were able to see/sleep with other people) but it worked for them because they didn’t get jealous. I mean, the first time we meet Merc, he is nailing a girl in Tommy’s bar……lol.
I wasn’t too sure about Bay at first. But the more I read, the more I started to like him and by the end of the book, I loved him. He also was a good fit with Spectra but, and stress but, because he was a predator (aka vampire) and a sorcerer (which is the first time I think that I have read those two being combined). He was the one the uncovered the wrongs that Alexander was doing to her, thinking that he was protecting her, and he was the one that was there, along with Merc, when Spectra needed him the most.
The whole storyline as to who Spectra’s father was and the storyline about exactly what she is was played out beautifully. I kinda felt bad for her when it was revealed who her father was, and a little shocked to be honest. Then when Bay finds out exactly what she was, again it was a huge surprise to me. There were hints dropped throughout the book but I didn’t exactly put two and two together until Bay found out.
I would be a fool if I didn’t address the sex scenes. They were all hot. Very hot but what ruined them for me is that Spectra would go from one man’s bed to another in the same day. Also, the whole cumming in her until she was married. It was great (and that she insisted on condoms was awesome) until well, you have to read the book. I wish that it was carried out until the end because it was kinda different.
The ending was good but I couldn’t tell if there was going to be a book 2? I am so torn because there was so much left in the air.
How many stars will I give Spectra: 4
Why: A great paranormal/fantasy with hot sex scenes. The ending I was a little torn on and I wish there was better clarification on if there is going to be a book 2.
Will I reread: Yes
Will I recommend to family and friends: Yes
Age range: Adult
Why: Sex, violence and language
**I chose to leave this review after reading an advance reader copy**
I love a novel that allows the reader to see a glimpse into the author's mind blowing imagination and Spectra did exactly that. This novel involves two of my favourite things, paranormal and romance. With sorcerers and magic, angels and ghosts I found it difficult to put this book down. This was the first time I'd read Ebony Olsen and I was impressed with the story overall as well as the development of the characters. I enjoyed the different points of view, an essential part I felt to this novel. I especially liked the secondary characters and their story lines - Calin and his wives (especially Gina - love Gina!), Luke and his son, and the taboo drama that encircled them. I enjoyed how Spectra was a strong female lead - in the beginning I wasn't so sure given her relationship with Alexander but as her story continued to develop she turned out to be the heroin I wanted her to be. While I wanted there to be a bit more of an elaboration when it came to Spectra and some of her past as well as her current relationships, I found that overall the story was intense and passionate and I loved the non-traditional relationships that made up this book. I found myself immediately drawn into this paranormal world that Olsen has created - curiosity, heartbreak, lust, love, secrecy - all an integral part of Spectra. A great paranormal, an easy read, a magical (pun intended) story.
Spectra by Ebony Olson is a paranormal fantasy read. One that offers readers a lot of action, intrigue, and romance. The characters are suspenseful. Each has a goal. That goal leads them into each other's circle. Once entered, there's no turning away from what pulls them together. A fight worthy of every readers' heart. Strong, bold, and entertaining.
Ebony Olson brings together one of the most fascinating mixtures. Angels and magic. A heady combination. Especially in the form of Spectra and Bay. These two characters had me captivated from the beginning. Three-dimensional, highly engaging, and so many possibilities...I loved it. Every page was enticing. Left me, feeling an adrenaline pumping into my system as each scene unfolded. Powerfully written, Spectra, is a must read for all. This new writer has definitely caught my full attention. I look forward to reading more of her work.
OMG! This book is wonderful. I read it at inkitt last year and i loved it. New paronarmal that you don't see in others books and plenty of material for a series. I waiting for more Spectra
Spectra by Ebony Olson ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spectra is a unique story. I must that once you start to read this story you will read it to the end. This is the kind of book that will have you turning page after page and will be hard to put down until you finish. But I do want to give you a small warning this story is full of predators that are supernatural creatures and even though it's a paranormal romance I felt that there isn't much romance in the story. The story features Bay Ryder, Alexander Williams, Mercury Raphangelis and Spectra Michaels. Bay is a predator de Sang and sorcerer, who runs his own private security company, fighting the purist organization Essence. Alexander is a powerful Sorcerer, Playboy and L'Ordre in the city, he made a name for himself very quickly and pissed off a lot of the predator upper echelon. Merc is a Angelis, a doctor, and dominant and he is also the half-breed son of an archangel not one of their Nephilim grandchildren. Spectra is a Balance who hasn't fully acquired her powers, she is a descendant of angels but she had to be told who her father is, she was orphaned at age 16, she is a computer nerd, she feels that she is ment to marry sorcerer Alexander, who she has known and love since her childhood. This another great story by Ebony Olsen she creates extraordinaire paranormal worlds with astonishing characters. I really enjoyed her characters and reading her books. The only thing I didn't like is I needed more romance between the characters, the dialogue between the characters is very descriptive. This story isn't for the faint and it will keep you on the edge of your seat. The story will continue to hold your attention through out the entire book! It is a compelling story, it's a well written and you will get introduced to another marvelous world. It's just as exciting to turn the pages of this story as I am with the first book I read by Ebony Olsen. Again you can't help but to keep reading until you finish this book and I'm just as excited to read the next book. It's not your normal paranormal romance. I receive a ARC copy of this book from Inkitt exclusive and I recommend this book I have enjoyed discovering and reading this author books.
Amount of sex 5 / 5 How explicit 4 / 5 Romance 5 / 5 Overall: 5 / 5
Review: Jen reviewing today – I loved this book! This is best book I’ve read this year and Spectra will make my top list for 2017! The character’s are interesting, intriguing, and engaging. I loved the story and it had plenty of hot scenes.
Spectra is a young woman finishing college and ready to move on to the next phase of her life. She is wants to be with high school love Alexander, a sorcerer, but worries her abilities are not enough to be his wife. She also has a deep connection with Mercury, an archangel, with whom she enjoys spending time (and may be in love with). Then she meets Bay, a predator (I’m thinking like a vampire but it isn’t clear). He has awoken a passion in her like no other. And she has done the same for Bay after centuries long celibacy. All the men know about each other in the story and their involvement with Spectra. While Spectra is balancing the relationships (and the hot and steamy times with each man), she starts job interviews which lead her to Essence, a organization doing bad things for the wrong reasons. Her abilities become an interest to this group and the men in her life seek to protect her.
The book reminded me a lot of the Mortal Instruments, but instead of being from the Shadow Hunters perspective it was from the Downworlder’s view and there is no army of angelic beings policing the world (oh and there are plenty of sex scenes). Humans and supernatural creatures interact in this world and most humans are unaware of the supernatural beings supernaturalness. I loved this book and hope there may be more as the world Ebony Olson describes is so engaging.
This is awesome. Read the full review please it's not negative in the end
I do not tend to read novels containing completely open relationships with very few boundaries, these style books usually get put away as soon as I uncover this type of relationship. So when I first reach my usual tipping point and I can't bring myself to put this compelling tale down it leaves me wondering why and how I've made it to the end, and will read the next. The ways characters are portrayed is brilliant, I hated, loved and emphasised. I was so pleased with a female main who was neither a hero of epic proportions nor weak and measly. So happy. It was well written. I obviously do not have the highest English level but we'll written to me is high quality / above average The story line and beings were unique and dispute getting lost at times I was so intrigued that I could not put this novel down until complete. Signing off after a long pleasurable journey well after midnight. Read me.
Great writing and I loved the plot. I felt the emotions of the characters and liked how strong the h was. The author kept me guessing on what Spectra was really is. When it was revealed. I blew me away. Not a ghost story for sure but a mixed of kick as s heroine with powerful lovers. The love triangle worked. It flowed and wasn't a porn. Am I glad she dumped the jerk who tried to keep her on the lease while eating his cake with other women. I liked who she ended up. I hoped there is book two. I want to read more on Spectra developing her power. Maybe see her relationship developed. Totally recommend this book if you liked relatable characters with a strong female and hot guys. This book is like a reverse harem with a twist. Thanks for a great read. Want more though please....
This book really opens you up to different characters within the paranormal world. Spectra has amazing abilities and is rare but she is torn between two lovers who are powerful themselves. You will be kept guessing throughout as it has plenty going on and the great plot will keep your attention. I received this arc but also bought it and this is my honest unbiased review.
This is one of the best books I have read! Great story line, characters and it leaves you wanting more! Please, please write more of Spectra and make it into a series!!!!! You are a great writer! Thanks for the great read, I couldn't put it down.
This story surprised me with unusual supernatural elements I hadn’t read about before. I liked that. I also liked the characters, and I had fun figuring out the twists and turns of the plot. Spectra is a quick, entertaining read. Perfect for ebook format.
I received this as an ARC from Inkitt in exchange for an honest review.
I usually don't read this kind of genre, however I was pleasingly surprised. The beginning is very strong and as the story continues a lot of things happen you wouldn't have expected. At first it was a little bit difficult to understand the world Ebony Olson created here, but the more you read the more you'll understand and a certain wow-effect happens. (That's the only 'minus-point' here, also I wished there would have been more background information) The story of Spectra and the decisions she has to make is truly enthralling because you never know what's going to happen next (I really couldn't stop reading it). The characters were round and had a lot of sarcasm/humour, which I loved, because sometimes characters can be pretty boring, because they just don't develop throughout the story. I did also enjoy the different character perspectives this story was told. It was like a perfect fanfiction ;). Due to the fact that this story contains explicit sexual content I would recommend this book to 18+ readers.
Can not wait for the next one. The characters are different then any other book I've read. If you don't like reading about multiple spouses do not read.
Before I go into details I must say, romance is not my favorite genre. Though, I like fantasy and paranormal, so when the publisher offered an ARC in exchange of an honest review, I thought I gave it a try. This is not a “one girl, one guy” love story. The few romance books I have read were about a girl meets a guy, but there is some trouble and a lot of misunderstanding, but finally Love finds its way and everyone is happy at the end. In this story the girl has a man, wait, two men, then meets a third one. None of them normal humans, and it turns out, the girl also has some secrets of her own. Not being a simple romance, the story got my interest. Actually, this is the first story I have read that is about an open relationship that works fine, and the men doesn't want to kill each other. Well they do, but not necessarily for the girl but for other reasons. The love story weren't usual either. Deep in the desires of Spectra and Bay for each other lay something ancient, something powerful, wich made the romance more compelling. Usually I turn down a vampire story without even starting to read it. Somehow, I just don’t like vampires. However, the predators in this story weren’t “the usual” blood sucking bastards, but real badasses. The whole intricate background of secret organizations fighting with each other made the story quite interesting. The author definitely has a vivid imagination. One thing I missed was the strong unique writer voice, but it will come with time.
A good story line, though I must admit I got lost quite a few times in the story & had to go back & reread sections. There is a lot of information to acquire on the fly too. So far I'm liking it. Will pick up the next.
Lies, intrigue, and characters full of mystery and suspense. This book was is a paranormal romance and I do like these type of books. This book was just as exciting and full of magic and sex. This book was full of many things. I did want more at the end. * I received this book from the author---this is my honest review*
This was my first Paranormal Romance. I was wondering if I was going to like it. And because it was an easy read and I was intrigued to see what was going to happen in the next chapter, I just kept reading and reading. I did really like how Spectra was written as a strong, non-caring teenager who had some spunk to her. She knew how to carry her head on her shoulders from what happened to her in her past. But the minute she met Bay, she tried to act like he's a suit, but it kept going and going. Their relationship was very interesting in the different worlds they lived in. And how he was so intrigued by Spectra that it I was rooting for him. I felt the beginning with her old boyfriend that broke her heart because knew she wasn't good enough for him and the kind of person he was, their "friends with benefits" kind of annoyed me. But I thought I would see more of him in the book. And the other boy toy, I felt there needed to be more of a relationship with those two to counteract her relationship with Bay.
The things I got confused about in the story: Too many characters involved with too many story lines. Especially Bay's crew. It was a little too much going on with too many characters.
Things I did like from this story: It was a little Romance that was in a paranormal world. But it wasn't a Romance in a structural sense. But there still was romance. And I was kind of surprised of the ending, but I felt it should of gone to the norm because that's just the kind of Romantic person I am. I thought it was unique story. I didn't mind reading it. It went much easier than I thought it would of. And I'm glad this was my first Paranormal to start me out.
The prose was fantastic, the story as unique as I've read in this genre, the characters were pretty easy to get attached to. The complex relationships were different to me, yet recognizable and somehow touching in the fact that I totally empathize with feeling divided between loves. At the last page, my first thought was...where's the next book? There have to be more. Spectra is a character that I want to continue getting to know in a world that has my curiosity piqued.
I highly enjoyed the flow & perspectives of this book. However, there were some typographical errors that were annoying to me; A more thorough proofread / edit is something I would advise. On a positive note, the characters themselves were quite fleshed out - I would have enjoyed more details on what they looked like: eye color, hair color, height, etc. just for visualization purposes. All in all, I would definitely recommend to friends as an excellent read. Thank you so very much for sharing this world & its denizens!
I throughly enjoyed reading this book. Spectra was a likeable heroine even tho she had her moments. The guys were awesome and I wished there was a second book so I can continue reading their story. I liked the concept and am intrigued by it.
This was one of those alluring romances that did not quite center on just one couple or just one aspect of romance. This was a romance that encompassed a sexual experience. I go so much more than I was expecting from this read. I gave me a new world to get involved in. It gave me special characters to learn and enjoy. I found a sense of familiarity and kinship with the world that was created by Ebony Olson. It was my first read from her but not my last.
Disclaimer: Thank you to Inkitt for providing me with a digital ARC in exchange of an honest review
First thing first, I do not know how I feel about this book. Yeah, you read it right. I just do not know... Still, I read it in no time. The writing was easy to follow and easy to read, the pace was good with an healthy dose of suspense. Sadly, the world-building was definitely lacking and felt very blurry and hazy. Words like "predator", "angelis" and so on were thrown around but never fully explained. I still don't have a clear idea of what exactly they are---On this regard the book was very "meh".
Another thing I can't say I appreciated was the excessive focus on the erotic scenes instead of the plot. The sex scenes were well written but still...
I liked Spectra quite all right but Bay left me cold. Overall the characters didn't tell me much, they were okay but nothing more.
As I said, I still don't know how to feel about Spectra (the book, not the character). Overall, an okayish read I guess....
This book had really interesting characters. I felt it needed more development between Mercury and Spectra. For her to love him enough to marry their relationship wasn't that deep. The sex scenes were hot. I give this book only three stars because I'm still a little confused about what everyone is actually. Still not sure if Bay is a vampire or some kind of shifter. I'd Spectra a wraith , angel or this balancer. I'm hoping there will be another book to answer or clear up things. I would read more from this author.
Spectra was a wonderful read that kept me up all night. I couldn't put this book down and I felt as if the story progression was immaculate. From the very beginning, I disliked Alexander and I felt as if he was the worst choice for her and as the story progressed, that feeling solidified. You don't treat the person you love as secondary. And we do see both Mercury and Bay truly do love her. The whole polygamy thing was a little out of my comfort zone as I am a firm believer in one true ship and as much as I love Merc, I ship Bay. The ending made left me wanting so much more.
As a fantasy reader, I loved discovering this new world and the magnificent species in it.
I love Spectra as a character, despite everything, despite all her losses, the manipulation, she has managed to remain her own person and that is impressive. I respect characters that can hold their own and Spectra totally makes that list. I'm excited to see what happens next, especially since the ending left me high and dry. Definitely something I would recommend to others and I will be posting a full review on my blog after the book comes out on 22 Feb.
Oh and PS. I was given the arc copy of this book in exchange for an honest review and I'm so thankful to Inkitt for introducing me to this world and its wonderful character.
I loved this book. When I first got this book, I wasnt sure if I was going to enjoy it. I was very pleased when the story immediately started taking you into it's world. The characters were great. Loved their personalities and the way that they interacted with each other. I am looking forward to additiinal books in the series.
Please come out with the second nook soon....I loved this book. Main characters are awesome. Good storyline. Loved this book. Can't wait for the net one.
I have never read anything by Ebony Olson, this is my 1st read, I was approached and asked to read this for an honest review, this is not my normal read ... but I love new and different genres. I never shy away from any kind of book, I try it on for size so to speak. Paranormal Fantasy read. Suspense, action, intrigue & excitement, & romance are included!! Love the book cover, that always is my 1st thought. Very eye appealing indeed. Fonts and such. Love the developed characters. If I had to pick a favorite character, who's the fave for me for my reading eyes or ears? For me it would be, Mercury. I didn't have really expectation ('cause I am not that familiar with Ebony & her writing style & all that jazz.) of the book, I was pleasantly surprised as to where it went. It was a creative story, it did hold my interest & I feel I would not hesitate to check out where Ebony might go in her future books. ( ;
