Here are some fun facts about the Yellowstone - It’s a real thing. It really does exist - It’s a super volcano simmering just beneath the surface of Yellowstone National Park - It has erupted in the past, and will erupt again - Scientists believe that when it erupts again it will destroy 20 percent of the United States - You do NOT want to be in that 20 percent Tony and Hannah are just a couple of high school kids who happen across a woman who will change their lives forever. She’s a carnival fortune teller who warns them of a great calamity soon to befall the United States of America. The old woman tells them it will be up to them to tell the world of the impending danger. And to save the lives of millions. It would be easy to dismiss her warnings as fantasy, except for the fact that she vanishes before their very eyes. And so begins a long journey for Tony and Hannah. A journey which involves a great mystery, intrigue and danger. Not to mention threats by a government which should be trying to help them, but instead is trying desperately to keep its secrets hidden.
Started off well with an interesting story, but by the mid-way point it veered off topic and got a little too silly for my liking. Nothing of consequence happens. In a book entitled The Yellowstone Event, you would expect lots of action sequences and volcanic eruptions, geysers going off and tourist being poisoned by sulphurous gases etc. Forget it, nothing even remotely like this ever happens, instead it’s all about Government cover-ups and conspiracies, scientists being abducted and innocent people abused and incarcerated by dirty cops. The characters aren’t remotely likeable or believable, and as if all that wasn’t bad enough, there’s no conclusion or suitable ending. Avoid this terrible book, it’s not worth the money.
As usual Mr. Maloney has written a good, short book that leaves you wanting to read more. The problem is that book 2 will not be available until 9 months from now. November 2017. By that time I will have forgotten all about this first book. I read a lot. Many books a month as a matter of fact. Many of them post apocalyptic. I am a huge fan of Darrell Maloney but I think I will refrain from starting any more of his series until at least 3 books in it are available.
The book is about the Yellowstone Caldera which is huge series of volcanoes that, if they erupt, would basically change the face of the United States and have an effect throughout the entire world. The book deals with some scientists who have been gathering data and comparing it to data gathered years earlier.
The result is quite clear. The caldera is going to erupt. Thousands upon thousands will die. This is something the government does want known and, as the story goes on, one after another of the scientists involved is either killed outright or kidnapped.
Hannah is the main scientist character and her husband is Tony. She finds out what is going on and the two have to try to escape those who are after them. One of them will not escape. It's up to the other to find out if the other one is still alive or has been killed. This will involve dealing with local, quite stupid police and a attorney/private investigator who might be able to help.
It's a story that makes sense and is quite possible. Sometime in the future. Hopefully, far, far, far in the future.
Have read several of authors post apocalyptic stories, love the series. This book started more as a crime who-done-it, but know it will turn into post-apocolyptic, or at least something close. Thanks again Darrell, and as always, keep writing, I'll keep reading. maw
Darrell Moloney most likely had great fun writing "The Yellowstone Event", so at least one of us enjoyed the ride. Right from the start it is an odd mix of the paranormal, young love and prophecy. It's not particularly well done. Later on it becomes a tale of conspiracy and the apocalypse. It is not done well at all. I gave up at the halfway stage. I would sooner jump up and down on the spot where the Yellowstone super-volcano is predicted to erupt than read another page.
Good story. Maybe something the USA should use as a playbook for when it truly happens. Surprised though at how spot on I think this author was on Washington politics and how crooked everyone there is. Really pissed me off knowing how true much of the part of the story line is. I really didn’t want this series to end.
I like natural disaster books but all the fortune teller and dream stuff ruined it for me. I couldn't finish it at that point. Just not my sort of book.
Fire in the Sky is the first book in The Yellowstone Event written by author Darrell Maloney. Excellent plot and mystery. Really looking forward to reading the second book.
A great beginning to another amazing series by Darrell Maloney. I am loving the characters already. One of the authors gifts is to take normal people and put them in extraordinary circumstances and make a great story around them.
What a strange yet riveting book. It took me a while to figure it out that the story was being told by Tony. Not the sharpest tool in the shed, but loyal, honest and wanting to do the right thing.
The other characters in the book, were conveniently there at the right time and place. I am speculating ..... if I say, would that or could that be a spoiler alert?
Enjoy the book. I will be waiting impatiently for part #2. Enjoy Darrell Maloney's other books. All are interesting, fun reads.
I'm not sure why this was titled "Fire in the Sky." Yellowstone is a brief part of the story and mostly it is mired down in a government conspiracy and kidnapping. A lot of time is given to the start of Hannah and Tony's romance, apparently in an effort to get us to like them. Hannah is a whiny manipulative person, not above insinuating she would entertain herself with other guys if her boyfriend/husband doesn't do what she wants. Tony has a very sophomoric sense of humor (humor being used lightly) and it not a very bright guy. This very shadowy government conspiracy is hard to believe since it would have spanned decades and required a lot more cooperative and organization than is likely possible for the government. These highly trained operatives are apparently just thugs that have no problem trussing up a naked, pregnant woman and then leering at her. These guys are able to execute this plan repeatedly and keep it all quiet? The only character that even had some semblance of interest for me was Bud, but just not enough to continue to the next book. I gave it an OK because I managed to finish it.
I like Darrell Maloney's work, having read and enjoyed most of them. Always a good read.
One of Maloney's gifts is that he focuses on the important parts of any problem, and doesn't get lost in unimportant details.
This is another uncomplicated work, although he does throw in several unexpected twists and turns. Things happen fast in this book.
Where I must depart from Mr. Maloney, is his understanding--actually, I should say his MISunderstanding--of the Washington DC culture and capabilities. It seems obvious he's never worked anywhere near the place.
While it makes for a straightforward plot to assume Washington is filled with nothing but crooks, the reality is far different. Oh, there are crooks, and malevolent forces, but there are also good guys and gals trying to do good.
Indeed, the biggest problem there may be the number of folks trying to do what they perceive as "good," with utmost enthusiasm, and therefore regardless of the consequences. The environmental lobby comes to mind.
Further, all too much damage is done by simple misunderstandings and lack of knowledge.
Readers should know that "no," faceless career civil servants aren't ordering kidnappings, murders and cover ups willy-nilly and daily.
And factually, Maloney in asserting that politicians absolutely never face jail time for misdeeds. A few online searches will reveal several dozen federal politicians over the last decades who have enjoyed the hospitality of prisons for bribery, corruption, malfeasance, etc. Too few, I'm sure...but to say elected officials "never" face prison is a massive factual error.
That understood, this is still a fun, Intriguing book, and I look forward to reading the rest of this series.
