Finding Gobi
A man, a dog, and the lengths to which love will go to sacrifice for its companion.
Finding Gobi is the miraculous tale of Dion Leonard, a seasoned ultramarathon runner who crosses paths with a stray dog while competing in a 155-mile race through the Gobi Desert in China. The lovable pup, who would later earn the name Gobi, proved that what she lacked in size, she more than made up for in heart, as she went step for step with Dion over the Tian Shan Mountains, across massive sand dunes, through yurt villages and the black sands of the Gobi Desert, keeping pace with him for 77 miles.
As Dion witnessed the incredible determination and heart of this small animal, he found his own heart undergoing a change as well. Whereas in the past these races were all about winning and being the best, his goal now was to make sure he and Gobi’s friendship continued well after the finish line. He found himself letting Gobi sleep in his tent at night, giving her food and water out of his own limited supply, and carrying her across numerous rivers, even when he knew it would mean putting him behind in the race, or worse, prevent him from finishing at all.
Although Dion did not cross the finish line first, he felt he had won something even greater – a new outlook on life and a new friend that he planned on bringing home as soon as arrangements were made. However, before he could take her home, Gobi went missing in the sprawling Chinese city where she was being kept. Dion, with the help of strangers and a viral outpouring of assistance on the internet, set out to track her down, and reunite forever with the amazing animal that changed his life and proved to him and the world that miracles are possible.

Dion has not only completed but competed in some of the world’s toughest ultra marathons across the planet’s most inhospitable landscapes. This includes running across the brutal Moroccan Sahara desert twice in the 250km Marathon Des Sables and also twice across South Africa's Kalahari Desert, also 250km. Dion's latest 250km race across the Gobi Desert in China turned out to be a completely different race where he fell in love with a stray dog (later named Gobi) that followed him during the week and who would change both of their lives forever.

Confession: I couldn’t say no to the cute little face staring at me from the front cover. It seems I was drawn to Gobi in much the same way author, Dion Leonard, was drawn to becoming her owner!
Dion uses a combination of flashbacks to childhood and earlier life, while also following the ultra-marathon race which changed his life due to meeting Gobi. I'm not usually a fan of such flashbacks, but Dion does this in a way that maintains the natural flow of the book.
The laughs and smiles began the moment Gobi appeared in the book - around page 40. It meant the book transformed from so-so story about a runner, to can't-put-down story about a runner with an amazing little dog. Dion writes in a way that made me feel like I was running alongside him and Gobi through the rough terrain - thankfully without the physical effects of running a marathon myself!
Gobi is truly an inspiring little dog and it was beautiful to read of the bond which formed during the ultra-marathon. Gobi breezes through insane running distances that would leave most of us collapsed in a heap! Her toughness and resilience reminded me of my own brave little dogs over the years.
Split into chapters and six parts, it’s an easy-to-read book. Once you slip into the rhythm of it, you fly through it – much like Dion and his marathons! It’s a great book for all ages in which numerous lessons about resilience, friendship, courage and humility are shared.
I never expected a story about a dog to evolve into something resembling a Cold War thriller – but it does. Dog-nappers, suspicious cars, strange men in suits – they all make appearances in the latter half of the book which make it unexpectedly gripping stuff!
It was also interesting how Gobi’s story went viral courtesy of the crowd-funding campaign Dion started to assist with getting her to the UK. More heartbreaking was China’s attitude and abhorrent treatment of dogs and animals in general. Get your act together, China!
Dion does veer off on occasional tangents about his running – at times this didn't have anything to do with Gobi or add anything to the overall story. I also found it slightly poor taste to just leave Gobi with a carer (straight after desperately trying to reunite with her) so he can enter a race or two.
One thing is certain though, Gobi brings smiles to faces worldwide, through her resilience and attitude to life. Through finding Gobi, Dion found himself. Finding Gobi is an inspirational book about never giving up or letting the negative voices inside your head win.

Yes, it was Dion, and the world is better off for knowing Gobi’s story.

Gotta Love Gobi!
The story begins when Dion Leonard takes a trip to China from Edinburgh to participate in a grueling 150 mile six-day seven-stage race in the excruciating heat of desert and dangerous mountain terrain....."the biggest race of his short running career." That unforgiving land is where Gobi appears out of the blue, looks Dion in the eyes and adopts him as her own....so cool.
The first half of the novel is pretty much dedicated to the race itself (quite interesting), its participants, and how winning is not always the main goal....surprising and gratifying to hear....and Yikes! What an accomplishment to just finish....in any position!
The second half explores the people of China, an adventurous, big spirited and loving little dog and the man who makes it his mission in life to bring her home....despite the many roadblocks....despite the frightening situations; and Wow! the support from SO MANY kindhearted people in the world that made it possible.
(would be interesting to find out what REALLY happened to Gobi during her mysterious absence....don't you think?)

In 2016 Dion Leonard was running ultra marathons in the Gobi desert the race was 1555 miles long he picked up a stray that kept pace with him over 89 miles my heart was melting Dion felt a bond come between them that he didn't want to give up.
Leonard then takes it upon himself to make sure he doesn't lose Gobi again what he & his wife Lucja try & get him into his hometown of Edinburgh that is like jumping over hoops both wouldn't give up hope.
All I will say now is this book is a story of unbidden love man has for his dog & the lengths they go to to stay together this pulled at my heartstrings I had a lot of emotions go through me as we learnt about Dion's upbringing broke my heart his childhood friend Deon who stood by him no matter what.
If you love animal stories that are true read this your heart will break as mine did right through out this true story.
Leonard then takes it upon himself to make sure he doesn't lose Gobi again what he & his wife Lucja try & get him into his hometown of Edinburgh that is like jumping over hoops both wouldn't give up hope.

Yep, here's another one! Most people who follow my reviews soon realize I read A LOT of animal memoir books. As soon as one becomes available, I must have it! They almost never fail to disappoint, and this one was no exception.
Dion Leonard is an extreme runner, after taking up the sport because his girlfriend/wife became interested in running as a sport and encouraged him to join her. Not one to take things by halves, Dion found himself competing at an elite level, racing some top notch runners across harsh terrain and extreme temperatures. Along the way a little dog whom Dion called Gobi appeared beside him, and this book is not just the race, but the race to get Gobi back to the UK to join Dion and his family.
I love animals, and therefore I love animal books, especially if they have a happy ending. I hope that Dion and Gobi get many happy years together, and I know Gobi will be much happier with a family as opposed to on the streets of China. Excellent, personal writing too, Dion isn't afraid of confronting some personal demons. Adored this book, five stars!

Very sweet book about a man who falls in love ... with a stray dog ... and all the dramas he went through in order to bring that dog home with him.
Dion was running in a 5-day marathon across China's Gobi Desert when he first met the canine love-of-his-life. She attached herself to him at the start of the race, and kept up with him for almost 80 miles (128 km). He is soon wrapped around her little paw, and can't even consider abandoning her when the marathon finishes. So, the process of bringing the newly-named, Gobi, home to Edinburgh, Scotland begins.
Until all the intricate arrangements can be made, he is faced with leaving her in the care of Chinese locals ... and she disappears ... hence, the title "Finding Gobi". Thankfully, the incredible journey ... and it certainly has its mysterious moments regarding the disappearance ... has a positive ending.
If you like nonfiction dog stories, you'll probably love this one.

What Can I say.... I missed this story and the internet chaos the first time around...
But I am so happy with this book I know the story thankfully!
This his an incredible heart warming, touching, fantastic story, with warmth, humble that touches your heart, more so if like me you are an animal lover....
I understand fully how the love of an animal can touch your heart, so much and would have done exactly the same as Dion....
This is not only a story of an incredible dog, but of an incredible couple, who changed their lives for six months to bring back the lovely dog Gobi...
Dion writes this book from the heart, and his story explains his character, a story that shows the man he is, a man that I admire and respect for his heart and courage to battle through some hard times.
A story that touches you, how good mankind can be, how a story touches many people all around the world, especially one lady who followed the story from the start everyday...
The heartache and worry, I felt it so much, just loosing my cat from the garden for a couple of hours and I think my heart will break !
Loved this book, loved the story of greatness, support and touching humanity. Dion tells this story so well...

Whilst competing in a 155 mile race through the Gobi desert in China Ultramarathon runner, Dion Leonard comes across a stray dog. Little did Deon know that this cute little stray would follow right beside him throughout his race. Over the course of the race Deon becomes very attached to the stray and ends up calling her, Gobi.
Once the race was completed, Dion and his wife knew they couldn't leave Gobi behind, but getting her out of the country would be a challenge. Whilst attempting to work out how they'd get her out of the country, Gobi disappears. With so many stray dogs in the region, it's seems near impossible that they will ever be able to find, Gobi again.
How could I not read about this adorable little dog. I must admit I am attracted to books that have dogs on the cover or any animal on the cover for that matter. And with such a cute face I just had to find out what her story was all about and I'm so happy I did. A fantastic, heartwarming true story about the strong bond between a man and a dog. I absolutely enjoyed this story and I have no hesitation in highly recommending it to anyone who enjoys a good story.

It's 4am and I just finished this book. A beautiful story of doggy devotion and perseverance. Dion's determination to save his little friend and to give her a forever home is inspirational. If you love dogs you absolutely must read this.

This really was an amazing story. I already knew most of it, though I can't recall whether that was from an article online, a news story, I'm not sure, but anyway I knew the basics.
However there was a lot I didn't know, in particular, just how many people around the world, but especially in China, banded together to help him find this dog. Look at her face - irresistible! It's incredible that she found him, and even more incredible that she was found after she went missing (I don't think that's a spoiler is it? There'd be no book if they hadn't! )
A lovely, heartwarming story.
However there was a lot I didn't know, in particular, just how many people around the world, but especially in China, banded together to help him find this dog. Look at her face - irresistible! This true story was so heartwarming and a perfect antidote to the recent dark and bleak books I had read.
Dion Leonard, an Australian living in Edinburgh, had only been distance running for a few years when he went to China to compete in the Gobi ultra marathon - 155 miles over seven gruelling days (it makes me feel ill just thinking about it). In the desert the daytime temperatures got up to 130 degrees Fahrenheit or even higher so its a real test of endurance. On this race he encountered a little brown dog that seemed to latch onto him. The dog ran with Leonard for three of the stages, a distance of 77 miles. Think of those little legs going like the clappers! They named her Gobi because of where she was found. Leonard ran the longest and hottest stages without the dog because he thought the conditions would be too extreme for her so she was driven to the end of those stages. Nevertheless he missed the company and inspiration of his new little friend. After the race he vowed to do whatever it took to enable Gobi to come home to Edinburgh with him.
If he thought the ultra marathons were epic, they were nothing compared to the bureaucratic and logistical difficulties in getting one little dog from China to the UK. They finally did it but it was a long and difficult road. Along the way Leonard met some wonderful people and made some amazing new friends. The help of strangers and the worldwide response to Gobi's plight blew him away. In these times of news about atrocities and hate and war it is refreshing to be reminded that the human spirit is indeed alive and well and that we have more in common with our fellow humans that we have differences.
If you need to pick yourself up or just want a 'feel good' book, read this and smile!

Aveam nevoie de genul ăsta de lectură. O carte simplă care scoate la suprafață afecțiunea dintre un om și un câine. Un om rigid concentrat pe propriul ego și pe cursa de sute de kilometri care i se întindea în față și un câine al nimănui care dintre toți oamenii prezenți acolo s-a atașat tocmai de el. Nu doar că s-a atașat, ci l-a urmat în cursă mulți kilometri printr-o căldură infernală până când atașamentul a devenit reciproc și amândoi au știut că aveau să formeze o familie pentru totdeauna. În cale mai stătea însă un singur obstacol, formalitățile pentru ca micul Gobi, botezat după deșertul în care s-au găsit, să poată părăsi China și să înceapă o viață nouă în Scoția. Ei bine, aici este o întreagă aventură și autorul dedică aproape jumătate de carte unui lucru la care au participat direct și indirect mii de oameni din toată lumea. Povestea continuă fericit pe Instagram cu același nume cu care a început, findinggobi, dar întâmplările din viața unui ultramaratonist și pățaniile sale din dragoste pentru un ghemotoc de blană rămân în carte.

Topla i inspirativna istinita priča o jednom trkaču i malom klupku smeđeg krzna. Kujica Gobi (koja meni sliči na malog risa) osvojila je autorovo srce, kao i srca mnogih čitatelja. I moje, također.

So lucky to be able to read an advance copy of this book. I've followed the story from the very start and it is not just inspirational but heartwarming to know there are people that care this much. Beautiful story.

Ex-pat Australian Dion Leonard is an ultra marathon runner, who takes part in 5 day races staged in extreme settings. Like the Sahara, Kalahari and Gobi Deserts. Early in the 2016 event his path crosses that of a cute, skinny little terrier, who then follows him through exceptionally harsh conditions. He names the appealing little stray ‘Gobi’ after the region in which he is competing. By the end of the race, he has decided that he will do his best to adopt Gobi and take her home to Edinburgh. He had no idea just how difficult that challenge would turn out to be. In the ensuing days, left in the care of a local family, Gobi goes missing in the remote city of Urumqi. Leonard begins a desperate search to find her somewhere in the enormous expanses of rural China.
The story which unfolded after the race is fascinating, and Leonard’s easy writing style kept me glued to the pages, as I was desperate to find out what happened to the stray dog.
But this is a much more substantial story than that of a man and a dog. While the development of the bond between man and dog is central to the story, I was also greatly intrigued by the gradual revelations that Leonard makes about his own life, and the beliefs that drive him. Also fascinating is the insider information about the sometimes cut-throat world of competitive ultra-marathon racing. Leonard has a powerful competitive streak in his nature, something which drives him to push his body and mind to the utmost limits of existence. The book provided me with interesting insights into the mindset of an extreme sportsman, something that I genuinely appreciated. The reading experience is enhanced by a goodly number of appealing colour plates, and I was particularly drawn to the photos of Gobi, with her adorable doggy visage.

I really enjoyed this book, read it in one 6 hour sitting, and think it is a worthwhile read for anyone, not just dedicated dog owners like myself.

Nov 13, 1145am ~~ I saw a video clip recently about this man and his dog, and was intrigued enough to order a used copy of the book.
I was surprised to see that little Gobi came into Leonard's life in 2016. According to one of the later chapters, the story of the search was a worldwide sensation, which will tell you how much I was paying attention to world news that year. I remember being in a fog of political disbelief back then. I think it is ironic that the Gobi story has managed to warm my heart all these years later when I am in a bit of a fog for the very same reason as in 2016.
Well, anyway.
The story was a nice break and I enjoyed it, and the pictures too. I thought it was yet another example of how animals can change our lives. Gobi brought much joy into the author's life. She also helped him know himself better, helped him understand some of the demons of the past and hopefully cope with them once and for all.
I wish them both happy trails!

This book gave me a bit more than I expected. I remember when Dion and Gobi were in the news as an unlikely ultra-marathon running duo in the far west of China, but if I thought I knew the story, I was wrong! The book covers the race, a bit of Dion's backstory, and then a lot of the book is spent on what happened in between the finish of the Xinjiang race and Dion's arrival back in the UK with Gobi. Despite knowing there would be a happy ending, there were times I was feeling the stress and couldn't help cheering them on towards a positive resolution of all the hurdles along the way.
Apart from the facts of Gobi's rescue, the author also takes us into his world of ultra-running. I'm a 'runner' too, but could never dream of experiencing this elite form of competition, so the insight was fascinating. Where our experience intersects is in our understanding that For a lot of runners, the act of lacing up their shoes, heading out the door, and letting their lungs and their legs find their perfect rhythm as they run through nature is a beautiful thing. It’s about freedom, peace, and the moment when all time seems to stop and the stresses of daily life fade. Yeah!
Dion's a nice enough guy, but the real star of this story is little Gobi. She brought tears to my eyes a few times with her pluckiness and her unswerving love and loyalty.
When I turned the final bend and saw the finish line, Gobi was there. She was sitting in the shade, on a rock, scanning the horizon. For a moment she stayed motionless, and I wondered whether she’d recognize me. Then she was a blur of brown fur in motion. Leaping from the rock, she tore over the ground toward me, tail up, little tongue flapping. For the first time that day, I was smiling.
Although more utilitarian than literary, the writing is fine - good enough to convey the highs and lows of emotion along with the facts. I was swept along and thoroughly enjoyed the ride.

I find a book like this tough to rate, because the rating is more reflective of the subject material, which I was drawn to, rather than the actual narrative or writing.
Did I love reading about little Gobi and her indomitable warrior spirit? Absolutely. The passages describing her latching on to ultra marathon runner Dion Leonard, ultimately following him 77 of the 155-mile desert run across the Gobi desert, put an ear to ear grin on my face and warmed my heart. It's the reason I picked up this book.
Did I enjoy the descriptions of Dion's foray into competitive running and ultra-running? Absolutely. (His training sounds almost as intense as my 5k prep.) I liked some of the juicy gossip he included about the actual Gobi Desert Race (including throwing fellow runner Tommy Chen completely under the bus, basically saying he cheated by bypassing some markers; and that one of the reasons Dion lost was to help care for Chen when he suffered from heat exhaustion). I also liked the passages about ultra marathon running legend Cliff Young, who at the age of 61, ambled up to the starting line in Sydney and proceeded to run for five days straight to Melbourne, whooping the collective ass of runners half his age.
Weaknesses included a few too many passages about Dion's upbringing and contentious relationship with his mother--it just felt unrelated, forced, and bitter. In the end, I just didn't find Leonard very likable. His devotion to running, his drive, and his love of Gobi were all beyond admirable, but his [brutal] honesty grated.
Guys, on a somewhat related note: I picked this book up as extra motivation for my first real deal 5k on Saturday! Never in a million years did I ever think I could run (I've been a long sufferer of shin splints). Earlier this year, I completed my first mile, and It was honestly one of the proudest moments of my life. Earlier this evening, I did a comfortable 4.5 mile jog. I AM READY!

There is something positively heartwarming and uplifting about these kinds of animals stories. Where a human is irreversibly and irrevocably changed through a connection with an animal.
Finding Gobi is one such story, a little dog who saw a human and chose him as her own. Healing him and finding a warm and loving home in the process.

A feel-good true tale about an ultra-marathon runner (think 155 miles across the Gobi Desert) and his experience when a little stray dog starts hanging out with him throughout his desert race, and the two form a special bond. The book covers a wide timeline: from the author's troubled childhood in Australia - to becoming an ultra-marathon runner and living and training in Scotland - to his Gobi Desert race, and the adventures around the little dog he named Gobi.
This book is a combination memoir and animal read. I loved the feel-good elements with Gobi, but it was also fascinating to get a peek into the crazy and grueling experience of ultra-marathon running. If you're like me, you'll be shaking your head with incredulity as you read the chapters on the desert race and learn of the extreme lengths these runners go, both physically and emotionally in attempting to complete these tortuous races.
The story benefits greatly from Leonard's willingness to share his difficult experiences in childhood and his emotional journey to arrive at a place where this type of training and racing fulfills an important need for him. And it makes the bonding of Gobi and Leonard that much more special.
An endearing read for animal lovers, athletes, or anyone enjoying an inspiring tale of overcoming challenges, finding your zone in sport and in life, and opening yourself up to special connections!

This book was yet another reminder that everyone is not just like me! I found this book soooo annoying. First, the author, early on in the book, describes the death of his father and then lets us know that that man was not actually his father. But then says nothing more. Excuse me?? Who is your father? Where is he? What were the circumstances by which he left? Is the man who died your sister's father?? OMG. So many questions unanswered. Then, at almost the end of the book, the author does mention meeting his father once he was in his twenties. But only mentions that that man was English and thus allowed the author to get a British passport. Still no answers to any questions. Geez!
Second, the author's mother sounds like a piece of work. Unable to control or relate to her teenage son, she ends up banishing him to the house basement and LOCKING him in every night. What?? Who does that? No wonder the guy leaves home at 15 and basically lives in homeless shelters.
Third, the author is definitely a strange character. Which is totally fine with me. But what killed me was the remark about halfway through the book that people were always telling him that he was so normal (despite his upbringing). Hello?? This guy is not normal! Anyone with the super competitive drive he has, the need do multi-stage ultra racing, and his overtly anti-social race behaviour I would not classify as "normal".
Then, finally, the whole dog adoption thing super irritated me. The amount of time, energy, and MONEY that went into finding and recovering a STRAY DOG just absolutely floored me. Tens of thousands of dollars. Hundreds of man hours of work. And flying your stray dog home in Business Class from Asia? Could we not find a better way to do good in the world with all those resources? Ack!!
Of course, this is simply my opinion. YMMV.

Having followed Dion and Gobi's story since it broke last year, when it was announced that there was going to be a book about their journey, I knew I had to read it.
I will admit, I am not normally a fan of non-fiction books. However, the story was just so captivating that I had to know more. And boy, did I get it!
I was on the edge of my seat for most of the book. The twists, the turns, the sadness, the triumph... All of it utterly engrossed me, from the first page to the very last. I laughed, I cried (okay, I sobbed) and I cheered on this wonderful man and his little brown dog as they overcame insurmountable odds to be united forever.
This is a multi-faceted story which will appeal to a wide audience - runners, both professional and casual, animal lovers, young adults looking for some guidance in their lives, adults trying to overcome their own fears, fans of similar feel-good stories... The list is endless.
Overall, a well-written, easy-to-read book which leaves you feel warm and fuzzy inside. Simply wonderful.

What a cute little dog, just look at that face. I love the cover. This was a sweet story about a how a dog wiggled his way into the heart of a passing by runner and then into the hearts of many across the world. I loved that part of this story. It is a feel-good, do-the-right-thing kind of story. The runner, Dion, eventually becomes Gobi's owner, after many hoops to jump through.
The one thing that seemed off was that it felt 'overthought' at times. One example is when it comes to Gobi's story, the question of foul play or paranoia was so incredibly vague with no resolution or facts. I wondered if it was just mentioned for a dramatic effect or what. I, too, can go to worst case scenario in .03 seconds with no factual basis....just ask my kids. So, that is what it felt like because there was no definitive answer, ..... only speculation.

These are the kind of dog stories (true stories) that I love to read! Gobi and Dion make quite the pair of runners. A loyal and faithful dog and a loving and nurturing owner. The true story of the Australian runner and the cutest, most loyal dog ever is so heartwarming. Gobi and Dion had an undeniably real bond between them, a symbiotic relationship. They say dog is a man's best friend and this story exemplifies that statement. One aspect I loved reading about was Gobi's character and demeanor. Not only does Gobi want to be with Dion 24/7, but loves what they do together. It's not a forced/trained/have to do run situation. Sometimes I get a bit annoyed with my Bichon (Jazzmine/Jazzy) for following me everywhere and I do mean everywhere. She doesn't let me take one step without changing her direction and following me so I have to be careful in the kitchen so I don't step on her or trip over her. But after reading this book, I'm going to see things a little differently.

Prije svega moram istaknuti da su mi životinje jedna od slabih točaka u životu. Jako ih volim i poštujem i čim se spominju u nekoj knjizi, a pogotovo ako su glavne u priči, ta knjiga kod mene ima automatski neki drugačiji šarm i prednost.
I veliki plus je to što je ovo fascinantna i nevjerojatna istinita priča.
Ovo nije samo priča o psu nego i o upornosti, prijateljstvu, ljubavi, borbi ali i pobjedama i životnim promjenama.
Dion Leonard nas vodi kroz svoju avanturu u Kini ali i kroz vlastiti život – od teškog djetinjstva, izazova koje je prolazio, pa sve do trenutka kada je u pustinji upoznao malog, tvrdoglavog psa koji mu je promijenio život.
Iz ovog romana bi mogla izdvojiti nekoliko točaka.
Ljubav prema životinjama:
Gobi je savršen primjer kako životinja postaje član obitelji. Dionov odnos prema Gobi, kao i njegov citat:
"Ako je ne uspijemo dovesti u Veliku Britaniju, hoćemo li se preseliti u Kinu kako bismo živjeli zajedno?"
, savršeno prikazuje duboku povezanost koja nastaje između čovjeka i psa.
Teško djetinjstvo:
Dion je prošao kroz mnoge životne izazove, uključujući teške odnose sa majkom i nedostatak oca, što mu je nakraju dalo mentalnu snagu potrebnu za suočavanje s kasnijim životnim borbama.
Ljubav - Lucja i sam njihov odnos:
Bilo je predivno čitati o njima, cijelo vrijeme sam imala dojam da je to lijep zdrav odnos između dvoje voljenih.
Kompromisi, razumijevanje, strpljenje, bodrenje jedan drugoga.
"Toga je dana startala prije mene i nisam je očekivao vidjeti na stazi. Ali bila je tamo i gledala u mojemu smjeru zaklanjajući oči dlanom od sunca.
"Otkud ti ovdje?" pitao sam je kad sam naposljetku došao do nje. "Mislio sam da si završila još prije jednog sata."
"Mogla sam", odgovorila mi je, "Ali htjela sam da zajedno prođemo cilj, pa sam te čekala."
U cilj smo ušli s rukom u ruci. Mogla je završiti na mnogo boljem mjestu, ali je odlučila čekati mene."
"Posljednjih nekoliko kilometara bili su najteži koje je Lucja ikad završila. Uz suze, povike i bol, nepokolebljivo je nastavila do cilja.
Držao sam je za ruku dok smo prelazili ciljnu crtu.
"Sretna ti godišnjica", rekao sam. "Ponosan sam na tebe".
Timski rad:
U današnjem svijetu često smo navikli biti sami, ne tražiti pomoć koja nam se u većini slučajeva niti ne nudi. Usamljeniji smo nego ikada i bilo je lijepo za čitati kako sam pojedinac ne može napraviti koliko tim ljudi. To nekako probudi u čovjeka ono što zaista jesmo, društvena bića.
Isto tako mi je bilo predivno čitati kako su se u Kini svi skupa družili i nudili su njihovo prijateljstvo ne tražeći ništa zauzvrat. U današnjem svijetu kada svi nešto očekuju a spremni su dati vrlo malo..u bilo kojem području.
Predrasude:
Priča je započela tako da je imao predrasude prema Kini kao možda i većina ljudi.
Bilo je lijepo kako mu se mišljenje o Kini pomalo mijenjalo i kako je nakraju totalno promijenio dojam o toj zemlji te joj posvetio Zahvale na kraju knjige.
Lijepo je kad se odbace neke predrasude, kad se čovjek uvjeri u suprotno i to suprotno te zaista pozitivno iznenadi.
Ja sam od mišljenja da pametan čovjek uvijek može promijeniti mišljenje o nečemu, dok glup i ponosan se drži čvrsto svog stajališta iako se ne slaže sa istim..
Ovo je knjiga koja inspirira, podsjeća na važnost ljubavi prema životinjama, ali i na to koliko snaga, ljubav i podrška mogu promijeniti ne samo naš život, nego i živote drugih.
Za kraj, obožavam kada knjige sadrže slike stvarnih likova, kao što je slučaj u ovoj.
Mislim da to svakako doprinosi priči i dodatno uljepšava izgled same knjige.

Prije svega moram istaknuti da su mi životinje jedna od slabih točaka u životu. Jako ih volim i poštujem i čim se spominju u nekoj knjizi, a pogotovo ako su glavne u priči, ta knjiga kod mene ima automatski neki drugačiji šarm i prednost.
I veliki plus je to što je ovo fascinantna i nevjerojatna istinita priča.
Ovo nije samo priča o psu nego i o upornosti, prijateljstvu, ljubavi, borbi ali i pobjedama i životnim promjenama.
Dion Leonard nas vodi kroz svoju avanturu u Kini ali i kroz vlastiti život – od teškog djetinjstva, izazova koje je prolazio, pa sve do trenutka kada je u pustinji upoznao malog, tvrdoglavog psa koji mu je promijenio život.
Iz ovog romana bi mogla izdvojiti nekoliko točaka.
Ljubav prema životinjama:
Gobi je savršen primjer kako životinja postaje član obitelji. Dionov odnos prema Gobi, kao i njegov citat:
"Ako je ne uspijemo dovesti u Veliku Britaniju, hoćemo li se preseliti u Kinu kako bismo živjeli zajedno?"
, savršeno prikazuje duboku povezanost koja nastaje između čovjeka i psa.
Teško djetinjstvo:
Dion je prošao kroz mnoge životne izazove, uključujući teške odnose sa majkom i nedostatak oca, što mu je nakraju dalo mentalnu snagu potrebnu za suočavanje s kasnijim životnim borbama.
Ljubav - Lucja i sam njihov odnos:
Bilo je predivno čitati o njima, cijelo vrijeme sam imala dojam da je to lijep zdrav odnos između dvoje voljenih.
Kompromisi, razumijevanje, strpljenje, bodrenje jedan drugoga.
"Toga je dana startala prije mene i nisam je očekivao vidjeti na stazi. Ali bila je tamo i gledala u mojemu smjeru zaklanjajući oči dlanom od sunca.
"Otkud ti ovdje?" pitao sam je kad sam naposljetku došao do nje. "Mislio sam da si završila još prije jednog sata."
"Mogla sam", odgovorila mi je, "Ali htjela sam da zajedno prođemo cilj, pa sam te čekala."
U cilj smo ušli s rukom u ruci. Mogla je završiti na mnogo boljem mjestu, ali je odlučila čekati mene."
"Posljednjih nekoliko kilometara bili su najteži koje je Lucja ikad završila. Uz suze, povike i bol, nepokolebljivo je nastavila do cilja.
Držao sam je za ruku dok smo prelazili ciljnu crtu.
"Sretna ti godišnjica", rekao sam. "Ponosan sam na tebe".
Timski rad:
U današnjem svijetu često smo navikli biti sami, ne tražiti pomoć koja nam se u većini slučajeva niti ne nudi. Usamljeniji smo nego ikada i bilo je lijepo za čitati kako sam pojedinac ne može napraviti koliko tim ljudi. To nekako probudi u čovjeka ono što zaista jesmo, društvena bića.
Isto tako mi je bilo predivno čitati kako su se u Kini svi skupa družili i nudili su njihovo prijateljstvo ne tražeći ništa zauzvrat. U današnjem svijetu kada svi nešto očekuju a spremni su dati vrlo malo..u bilo kojem području.
Predrasude:
Priča je započela tako da je imao predrasude prema Kini kao možda i većina ljudi.
Bilo je lijepo kako mu se mišljenje o Kini pomalo mijenjalo i kako je nakraju totalno promijenio dojam o toj zemlji te joj posvetio Zahvale na kraju knjige.
Lijepo je kad se odbace neke predrasude, kad se čovjek uvjeri u suprotno i to suprotno te zaista pozitivno iznenadi.
Ja sam od mišljenja da pametan čovjek uvijek može promijeniti mišljenje o nečemu, dok glup i ponosan se drži čvrsto svog stajališta iako se ne slaže sa istim..
Ovo je knjiga koja inspirira, podsjeća na važnost ljubavi prema životinjama, ali i na to koliko snaga, ljubav i podrška mogu promijeniti ne samo naš život, nego i živote drugih.
Za kraj, obožavam kada knjige sadrže slike stvarnih likova, kao što je slučaj u ovoj.
Mislim da to svakako doprinosi priči i dodatno uljepšava izgled same knjige.
