"Fairy tales can come true
It can happen to you if you're young at heart" -
“I think life is like a plate of little snacks. It’s not exactly fulfilling but what can you do but grab what you can and don’t complain when someone comes to take it away from you?”
― Heide Goody, Disenchanted

If you read my reviews you know I have previously disdained various Fairy Tale mash ups as not my cup of tea. This book is just that Fairy tales, well kind of fractured Fairy tales all mashed together. I really can't explain this book because like a roller coaster or a rock concert you have to experience it to appreciate it. I need to add this disclaimer this is NOT a book for kiddies. Not even Addams family type kiddies.

This is the tale of Ella, an eco-friendly builder, whose father is getting remarried. Her mother died (or so we think) when Ella was a small child. Ella is getting and 'evil stepmother' and a silly step-sister. And future stepmother Myra is a total Bridezilla who is making Ella's life misery.

Suddenly Ella is getting help from Dwarfs, 6 of them. But these aren't the trademarked ones from your childhood, these are ODC, Stinky, Drunk. And they are neither cute, cuddly nor particularly friendly. In fact they are rather bossy. Poor Ella's life is going completely insane. One of her clients is complaining that the cladding on her cottage is falling, or being eaten, off of the building.

It seems Ella is a from a bit of magical family, her grandfather was a bear. And now the world of Fairy tales is intruding upon her reality. What you can expect are talking wolves, bluebirds that carry messages and fix hair, talking teapots, flying carpets, violent leg humping tables, and more dwarfs. A evil fairy godmother or at least an outcome driven Fairy Godmother, missing royalty and various plots of fairy tales described as Gambits. This is a laugh out loud book that makes you wish your dreams don't come true.

This was a refreshing diversion from my usual reading genre. Definitely, a adults spin on the classic fairytales. I was thrilled with its refreshingly funny humour, which, at times had me laughing out loud to an empty room.

I am sure the book took numerous hours of meticulous planning and thought. It has a lovely pace and I was eager to read more and more.

With favourite characters coming to us in a new twisted form it was a humorous rollercoaster that I thoroughly enjoyed

The cover is eye-catching and fun, I was immediately drawn to it.

I highly recommend this book, abe prepared for an alternative version of "The Happy Ending".

Goody and Grant make a cracking team and I look forward to seeing what is next.

Once upon a time there were two authors who got to together and wrote a fairy tale that combined all my favourites from when I was a little girl. Having already read other books by this super duo that can seamlessly write like one author with two heads, or is it two authors with one head? I just knew to have the tissues ready. No their books are not sad, far from it. I knew that I would need to mop up tears from laughing and after reading this Fairy Tale strictly for adults, I suggest that future readers have a couple of boxes on hand.
OMG each story is so very easily recognised and yet so far from the original like a polar opposite and it all came together in a brilliant remake that had everything that someone with fond memories of childhood had, to their changing reading habits of books with lets say more about them, adult humour, some swearing and an all action adventure. This book is in a class of its very own!
When Ella Hannaford was a little girl her Granny Rose warned her about not talking to fairies or accepting gifts from them but fairies are magic and like real people they can sometimes pretend to be someone they aren’t and trick little girls. Luckily Granny Rose is quite an all round Granny and knows how to deal with such things, after all she was a tough old bird with arms like Popeye the sailor man. The fairies was certainly not done with Ella but it would be as a grown woman she would encounter a fairy again. This is one psycho fairy that is determined about how Ella’s fairy story life should play out.
Just loved every character in this book, from the seven dwarfs that were very aptly named to Granny Rose and the Big Bad Wolf. Of course being a true Disney lover my favourite has to be the very reluctant notwannabe Princess, Ella. She is a lady that I am sure takes after her gran, but without the Popeye arms. I was truly giddy reading this book, well I say reading I actually listen to my books which meant I didn’t even have to stop when my eyes got blurry with crying!
As I have mentioned this book is in a class of its own so I give it 10 out of 5. Just loved it

I’ve been in need of something fun to read recently, so when I was given the chance to review Disenchanted I was quick to offer my services. I have read and loved the Clovenhoof series and knew that I was guaranteed giggles galore.

Before we get to me actual review, I have to mention the cover which is absolutely beautiful. It reminds me of the Zap lollies I used to get from the ice-cream van as a child; totally lickable!

Now to the story – I was not disappointed in the slightest: snorts/giggles and guffaws aplenty. This twisted fairytale was absolutely on my humour wavelength. At one point I lost the plot over the word shepherd’s pie and it’s still making me laugh to think about it! I loved Ella’s no-nonsense attitude and her refusal to accept the “happy ever after” ending that her intimidating fairy godmother has planned. It is difficult to pick a favourite character as they all had a certain charm but if pressed I’ll go for the talking teapot with potterycide on his mind, Grandma Rose for her tough Yorkshire outlook (I’m Yorkshire born and bred myself tha’ knows) and I’m a little worried that I may have peculiar feelings over a certain Mr Wolf….

An unconditional five stars for this intelligent and hugely entertaining book. I look forward to the next from Heide and Iain!

I thought this was a brilliantly funny read. the story follows Ella who is a normal everyday person who sees fairies, gnomes and ogres.

Ella spends the whole story trying to avoid her happily-ever-after, after meeting some gnomes in her garden, and organising her dad and mother in laws wedding. the story is very funny and it reminded me of Tom Holt books, so if you like his you will love this.

the story follows Ella as she meets gnomes, a wolf, an ogre and her dairy godmother all intent on helping her have the happily ever after that she doesn't want and studiously tries to avoid. it is laugh out loud funny all the way through and I couldn't recommend it highly enough.

What a great story about fairy stories and how to avoid them!
This book reminded me of Tom Holt books.
A person stuck in a situation trying to find a way out.
Ella is mid 30's her father is getting remarried since the passing of her mother.
First she starts to see dwarves who are trying to get her fairytale story to move along then is begins to escalate.
Imagine all the stories you've heard and read then meld them into a story where the main character doesn't want a happy ending she just wants to live her life.
Love the drawf Psycho I could hear his accent in clear Wolverhampton speak!
Another great by the Goody/Grant writing team

There's a twist in this fairy's tail!

I snort laughed my way through this book from the first page right to the last.

Great characters, sharp dialog, off centre humour and fart jokes. What's not to love?

I have had the extreme pleasure of reading previous works by the wonderful writing team of Heide Goody and Iain Grant so with this i knew what was in store for me, leaving me feeling that tingle of excitement and fizz of expectation before i even opened it.
Firstly though, i can't write any review without mentioning that cover. Beautifully designed & eye catching, it is guaranteed to entice even the most unsuspecting of readers to pick it up and take a peek.
With this story a peek is all it takes. This had me hooked and smiling to myself within the first couple of chapters.
Ella Hannaford is a single woman with her own business, going along minding her own business when fate intervenes. It comes in the form of 6 alternative dwarves (don't worry, number 7 is around) My personal favourites being shitfaced and psycho.
On a girly night out with her soon to be stepmother and sisters she is unceremoniously kidnapped ( or rescued, depends on your point of view) by the aforementioned dwarves.
She finds herself waking on a train, not knowing where she's headed. Hatching her own plan to escape them and get home again she doesn't allow for meeting an assortment of fairytale characters such as a Wolf, Ogres, fairies, and meeting her long lost, no nonsense Granny. All in the name of finding her Happy Ever After.
This is written in the true inimitable style of Heide & Iain, which guarantees the reader much mirth and (in my case) literal laugh out loud moments. Once you start this book you wont want to put it down.
If you haven't yet been introduced to this dynamic duo then my word, are you in for a treat!

We have a pantomime in York (where I live); its been filling the theatre for the last 30 odd years, written by the same team, and everybody loves it. The panto is one of the city's treasures because even though the plot is (very) roughly based on some traditional fairy story, it is so funny and so well done that you just don't care how daft it gets. Reading Disenchanted (or any books by Ms Goody and Mr Grant) reminds me of the York Panto, in that you are amused all the way through and you don't want the story to end but you feel all the better for having reading it when it does.

Disenchanted surrounds the reader in a galaxy of brilliant comic characters; the anarchic seven dwarves, the deeply irritating bluebirds, the big bad but strangely likeable wolf, our feisty heroine Ella and her impossibly West Yorkshire Nan, the manipulative fairy godmother (who reminded me a bit of Teresa May). It is all classic Goody & Grant fare, original and clever as always. They never disappoint.

The funniest book I have read for ages.

A very silly but very enjoyable story of Ella who spends all her time avoiding her "happy ever after". There are Seven Dwarves (but definitely not the ones you know), there's a fairy godmother (who you certainly do NOT want to disagree with) and all sorts of other fairytale characters. Once too get started you will really want to find out what happens to the heroine.

If you like fairy tales, laughing a lot and made-up swear words, there's a chance you might like this book....
An adult twist on well-known fairy tales, this book is very funny :) Many characters you will recognise but they are all slightly (or very!) different from the versions we all know and love.
I really enjoyed this book - I unfortunately read it on a plane, where laughing out loud makes you look like a bit of a loon... My favourite bits were Ella's granny (seriously, I'd like to have her as my gran), the dwarves and the new swear words I learned!

This book is amazing!
I already enjoy the Clovenhoof books by the same authors (so much that I am reading them extra slow !)
This story was spot on! How to avoid a happy ending - fairies and dwarves called Psych, OCD and Disco, wolves, ogres, step mothers, sisters, beasts and more. All merge into an unforgettable fairy tale.
Witty, clever and funny. Loved it.

Disenchanted, what can I say? Enchanted more like. This had me from the off, I love a twisted tale. I love Ella and her attitude about what is expected from a woman and how she doesn't believe that you need the traditional 'happy ending' forced upon you.
This is a funny, fast paced story that has enough of the 'fairy tale' elements in it to keep the reader engrossed. The names of the seven dwarves are hilarious and not for those who don't like rude words! The adventure that Ella embarked on was familiar to any girl who knows her fairy tales, albeit a mix of many different ones. I was rooting for the non-traditional ending and was not disappointed.

What a read!!Part from all of the fairy tales you remember from childhood wrapped up in a novel. Dwarves, fairies, ogres, wolves, capes, spinning wheels and bears. I loved “huge pause”, no- “huge paws” ! Ella is trying to get away from her stepmother and stepsisters (ugly?). A wedding needs to be arranged and her father is worse than useless. Her “friends” in the form of most of the above assist in her toils. I imagine this is a little like being on some sort of drug (in a good way!). Where dwarves help you and a wolf doesn’t eat you but asks you nicely to say the right words (What big teeth you have). Where teapots talk to you and constantly want you to drink tea (now there’s a thought). I really enjoyed this- it has a plot, good characters and things to make you smile on most pages.
I voluntarily chose to read this ARC and all opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased

Quirky

A unique story about happily ever after. Or the myth of it. Or the lack of it. Or the want of it. Or the denial of it.
Confusing, eh? That's a bit how I felt throughout the story.
There are some shining moments filled with humor and smarts, and the writing is top-notch. But it could have been
a whole heck of a lot shorter. And I would have liked a bit more definition as to why the story was being told. My burning question remains....What did she have against being happy? Now I can surmise a few reasons, like it's someone else's idea of your happily ever after and not your own, but I feel as if I was left to blunder along the 'what are they trying to say' highway for too long.
Good read. Good authors.

Intelligent and humourous, this is no average fairy tale. We've become lazy with our Disney and Pixar versions with heroic archetypes, but this tale makes you work for it. The story loops and twists in on itself so much so it's not always obvious who's on which side. I absolutely love the idea of someone in deepest, darkest Warwickshire being one quarter bear and the swear words are chuffing fantastic. A fine effort

Once I had suspended my disbelief, this book was outstanding. It made me laugh so much. I particularly loved Inappropriate (he certainly lived up to his name!): the things he came out with! And the wolf was a great character too. 5* from me

A hilarious book where fairy tales meet real life. It starts with Ella recalling time spent with her gran who when Elland tells her she sees a fairy disappears outside with a bin liner and disposes of it. The laughs just keep coming as Ella's fairy godmother keeps trying to force upon her the happy ending she doesn't want. The books includes everyone's favorites, such as an inappropriate wolf, the worst 7 dwarves you will meet, a gingerbread man, flying carpet and a long lost mum. If you haven't had the pleasure of reading Heide and Ians work before then you could do worse than starting here. It's a wonderful make you laugh out loud book. I throughly enjoyed it.

Book Description:

Ella Hannaford has a small business to run, an overworked father to look after and a future stepmother who wants a perfect wedding.

Can she avoid a girly night out with her clueless stepsister? Can she side-step lovesick suitors at every turn? Not if it’s up to that team of foul-mouthed dwarfs who want to forcibly drag her into her happily ever after.

Gingerbread cottages, dodgy European gangsters, gun-toting grannies, wisecracking wolves, stubborn fairy godmothers, ogres, beanstalks and flying carpets abound in a tale about what happens when you refuse to accept your Happy Ending.

My Thoughts:

Ever wanted to relieve reading all the classic fairy tales you used to read as a child? Well now you can but with a twist.

Disenchanted is a combination of all the best loved fairytales but strictly for adults.

The story starts off with Ella as a child who has her first experience of fairies. Then it fast forwards to Ella as an adult who, having forgotten all about fairies, is dragged into a world filled with characters from the books we read as a child.

We are then taken on a fun filled and enchanting journey of a read.

My favourite characters had to be Rose, Ella’s gran and the wolf. Both brought so much to the story. Rose is a feisty old bird. She is one of those straight speaking no nonsense type of people and one that just grabbed me from the start. She was larger than live in my head and I think she is going to be a massive hit with readers. The wolf I wasn’t sure if we were supposed to like him due to him being a bit of a baddie. He is still very much naughty but one that by the end, had totally captured my heart.

Disenchanted is a hugely appealing and enjoyable read. Even if it isn’t a genre you would normally read, I have a feeling that a variety of readers will fall in love with it. There really is something for everyone. What I love about these authors is that you never know quite what you are going into when you start one their novels. All I know is that they write the most unique and entertaining books that I have ever read!

My thanks to the authors for a copy of this book. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.

Magic and mayhem collide in riotous fairy tale romp!
As someone who is an unabashed romance novel addict and who also loves fairy tales, I could not resist the chance to review Heide Goody’s and Iain Grant’s Disenchanted. The premise of the novel – where the heroine very definitely does not want a HEA, despite the meddling of a host of formidable magical creatures, also appealed to my sense of the perverse. Indeed, I found the read to be a real tonic and I defy anyone to read it and not crack a smile and/or stifle a gaffaw within reading the first few pages!
If you thought that fairy tales were firmly consigned to superstitions from the past and story books for children, then think again. Magical creatures really exist, although Ella the heroine would much rather they were not quite so fixated on controlling her life. Much of the action takes place in rural England (predominantly the Midlands), as Ella veers from one adventure to another in her quest to avoid her prospective suitors at all costs and at the same time unravel issues from her family’s past. I loved the fact that Ella is a 21st century woman (no simpering miss) and does not need a ANY interference, magical or otherwise, in her life thank you very much. Her efforts to resist the fate her fairy godmother and her associates have planned for her drive the plot forward and the conflict makes for some hilarious scenes as the authors expertly turned the usual HEA fairy tale tropes on their head…
This unique and humorous tale includes an evil stepmother to be, a gung-ho grandmother, unlikely prospective suitors, a fairy godmother, dwarves, a big bad wolf and more. Combined with an indomitable heroine and a series of larger than life characters, it’s a fast-paced, laugh-a-minute, feel good read, with some excellent one-liners.
It was my first experience of the authors’ work and I now have a real taste for their irreverent humour and will be reading some of their other works very soon. Thoroughly recommended to readers who enjoy a fun filled read and magical read.

This wonderful book by Heide Goody and Iain Grant is not really a genre I read but a friend recommended it and they were absolutely right. A grown up fairy tale that has all the perfect elements: a fairy Godmother, an evil step-mother, wonderfully named dwarves, an inept and dim witted step-sister and of course the beautiful Princess and her Prince Charming. Only that's where the fairy tale-esq stops and the joy of the writers begins. Ella Hanaford the 'beautiful princess', spends the entire novel desperately trying to avoid her 'happily ever after'. Whilst she is on her own personal journey to avoid all things 'fairy', she also has to ensure that her father marries his new love, on time and with all the pomp and ceremony that her soon to be 'evil' step-mother has planned. Along the way she meets all manner of complications and disasters, all of which had me laughing out loud continuously. This wonderfully written novel follows our protagonist at break neck speed, so beautifully interwoven that I spent the entire read either in fits of giggles or sitting on the edge of my seat awaiting the next disaster.
If your happy suspending all reality and enjoy and great story, then look no further, Disenchanted has it all.

A Happy Ending (not the massage parlor kind) has it out for Ella, who definitely does not want to do as she's told. In a long, overly drawn-out tale, Ella has to avoid matrimony while disrupting another, and finding her mother before the fairy godmother makes her happy,

I think this book was far too silly for me to enjoy. Especially Windy.

Here's what I didn't like: the excessive fart/ bathroom humor. I felt it took too long for the HEA to show up in a way to trap Ella into .. a hEA. There was too much build up for every little fairy tale reference. At 40%, I wished it was over, and that was barely into the real meat of the plot. After about 40%, there were editing errors, missing punctuation, and quotations. Could have used better proofreading. Too much repetition of the same thing within a couple paragraphs of one another. The ending felt rushed.

Here's what I liked: the wolf. the idea behind the story, and the dwarfs were wildly different.

Overall, it felt far too drawn out, and I began skimming so it'd be over faster. I didn't really miss anything and didn't feel confused by the end.

I enjoyed this light-hearted story that incorporated various figures from childhood fairy stories. I did laugh out loud at times but not at every page as one reviewer claimed. I believe that a sequel could be written, rounding out what happens to the main characters. We're left kind of hanging, not knowing if Ella will succumb to her "Prince Charming." What about the potential for bigamy when her father marries Myra? Myra's dipshit daughter and her friend could certainly use some improving. What happens to Ella's mother who had been in a magically induced slumber for 30 years? How does she adjust to modern living i.e., phones that can take photographs? I was kind of hoping the wolf would turn into a handsome prince but I guess his character was too locked in to the big bad category. It seems that he played a part in both Red Riding Hood and the Three Little Pigs. It's a dirty job but somebody has to do it...

An intelligent, charming, delightful review of the stories we tell.

This book is really good. Well written (with the occasional editing miss), with enjoyable characters and a clever look at fairy tales, how we understand narrative, and how stories evolve (or fail to evolve).
There are thoughtful parts to the book, informative parts, adventurous parts, comedic parts; something for everybody. The story itself is really good.
The final resolution is clever enough, though not the way I would have chosen. I suppose that it's in keeping with the somewhat light hearted nature of the story though.
Overall I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy stories or fairy tales, as well as to anyone who absolutely hates them. I especially recommend it to people who are interested in storytelling itself.

Turning perceptions of fairy-tales right on their head. This is funny, very funny and sometimes a little crude but in all the right places. I've read a couple of books form these authors before and this didn't disappoint. The characters are brilliant and just when you think you've figured it all out, you find you're completely wrong and have to rethink what you thought was going to happen. It kept me hooked right to the very end and I loved it. I found myself taking it to the loo to read so the kids would stop bugging me (Easter school holidays) and finding errands that needed doing so I could be upstairs "doing laundry" in order to keep reading it. It's not your stereotypical love story and it is completely outside the box thinking. I loved it!
