The Big Data Opportunity in Our Driverless Future

Rate this book
From Detroit to Germany, Japan, and Korea, within the incumbent automotive industry there is amplifying conversation about the magnitude, extent and timing of the disruption that will result from the introduction of autonomous and driverless vehicles. This disruption will in turn result from innovations in technology and business models and changing attitudes toward car ownership. Catalyzed by the development of Autonomous, Connected and Electrified (ACE) vehicles and Mobility Services, the emerging hybrid mobility model will blend car ownership with on-demand car access. Big data generated inside and outside ACE vehicles and the exploitation of that data by machine intelligence technologies are key ingredients in this next generation of mobility. Together they offer a unique and still overlooked value creation opportunity. The book presents a strategy for capitalizing on the opportunities presented in our driverless future through the combination of startup innovations with corporate innovation efforts.

Simoudis discusses how big data will affect market structures, business models and innovation policies in a future with driverless connected cars. The book is well written, clear, concise, lively and accessible for a non-technical audience. Taking into account my own professional interests, I would have liked a more in-depth discussion of policy issues, but it was the author's choice to leave this out of the scope of the book. Which of course leaves the potential for a second book on the same topic, but from a different perspective.

Short volume with 130 pages of text with fewer than average words per page. I found the information rather generic, and ideas about innovation, disruption, incumbent strategy, etc. the same as they were in the 1990s. I had high hopes given the stars and endorsements, but I am disappointed.

The fastest way to understand the disruptive onslaught coming at the automotive industry! This should be mandatory reading for auto industry execs and leaders (including the newly appointed Hackett at Ford). Simoudis knows the picture from all angles - industry, disruptors, and investors -and there's clear logic to the arc Simoudis paints on what the incumbents must do to survive. I'd also highly recommend this to entrepreneurs and investors in AI, big data, and machine learning spaces.
