My name is Evalee, and I have a secret. I’m a witch.
Okay, maybe it’s not that big of a secret. At least not in Mystic Willow Bay where practically every paranormal creature lives.
Still, I have plenty of secrets. Like the fact that I suck at casting spells, which is a huge problem, considering I’m a witch. But I can talk to dead bodies and am secretly working on a spell that will hopefully revive my sister from the dead. Until I perfect the spell, I’ve hidden her body in the basement, something my roommates are completely clueless about.
I’m also in love with my best friend, Hunter, one of the most popular wizards in town and who’s completely out of my league in the dating department. But I’m not the only person in Mystic Willow Bay that has secrets. And some are way worse than mine. Like whoever has been stealing dead bodies from the morgue and the graveyard. For what reason, I don’t know, but I’m about to find out because they’ve stolen my sister’s body, and I need to get it back before I miss out on my chance at bringing her back from the dead.
Jessica Sorensen is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author from the snowy mountains of Wyoming. When she's not writing, she spends her time reading and hanging out with her family.
Evalee comes from a long line of witches but she doesn't have the magic touch that her family has. She lives in a town full of paranormal creatures, so living with fairies, werewolves and seeing demons around town isn't anything outside the ordinary. While she may not be skilled with her craft she can talk to the dead which helps while trying to bring her sister back from the dead. If only her body hadn't been kidnapped before she could do it. Now Evalee has to find her sisters body as well as bring her back before it's too late.
I've had this one on my kindle for a while but I haven't gotten around to it yet. I like the characters Evalee is sweet she's not the best witch but she doesn't let it get her down. The Secret Life of a Witch is a quick action-packed story that was easy to finish in one sitting. I enjoyed the story but wish it was longer because I wanted to know more about it. I'm curious to check out the next book in the series because while short it was a great start. I've read a few books by the author before and really enjoy her writing style.
One of my favorite authors is Jessica Sorensen; she is one of the authors that I will make sure I read all her books no matter what genre or age it is aimed at. What first attracted me to this book besides being a Jessica Sorensen novel was the cover. I have a cover crush on it. Also, I love stories about witches, as growing up I was a big fan of Sabrina The Teenage Witch - the MJH version and also the TV movies Twitches. The only downside I have about this book is that it finished too quickly for me and that there is no announcement or idea of when we will be getting the next book in the series as talk about cliffhangers galore. In this book, we meet Evalee who reminded me of Selena Gomez's character from Wizards of Waverley Place. That's what this book reminded me of as it had this whole Disney TV feel to it. A curse killed Evalee's sister, and now she is a ghost which only Evalee can see, and she has taken it upon herself to try and save her sister and bring her back to life. This is with the help of her Hunter who is her best friend, crush and one of the best wizards around. This book has everything from Vampires to Demons to Leprechauns and Faeries. During this book, we learn someone has been stealing dead bodies and the latest to go missing is Evalee's sister. Now Evalee must revisit old friends and haunts to find her sister and get her back before it's too late but during this someone is keen on getting revenge on Evalee for a spell that backfired. Also Evalee who has always been known as weirdly different is about to discover that who she thinks she is may not be the case ? I was hoping we would get a bit more information about the latter, but then the book finished and I was like nooo, must read more and then discovered we are still waiting for Book #2 even to appear on Goodreads.
I am thinking 2.5 stars so far. I can't make up my mind about this book. I love the idea. The plot interests me and I want to know how it ends, BUT I am kind of hating the heroine. She is not smart, independent or self assured. In fact she is whiney and defeatist and a bit of a tool. At least she can dance and has pretty rainbow eyes though, right? I am going to warily walk into book two for sake of the plot line. Seriously hoping this Evalee grows some lady balls soon though.
A nice little story with magic and new adult drama. Jessica has done it again with a series that makes you want to know what happens next. Not her best work but still a fun story with a dash of darkness to sweeten the deal. If you one-click Jessica like me or want a quick read that won't fry your brain. Then this book is perfect for you.
Like always Jessica did it again. If you are a fast reader like me its easy read, read it in a couple of hours. Great story cant wait til the next book cames out so i know what happens to Evalee and Hunter adventure to find Ryleigh body.
I really enjoyed the set up of this story and how nonchalant the author is when dropping some really great plot twists either that or she is an evil genius and must be stopped! She creates such a fun and fast paced paranormal world. This book brings on the serious Sabrina the Teenage Witch vibes and hints of Charmed and I couldn’t get enough of it.
From the get go you are sucked into Evalee’s world and relate to her not so perfectness. Who can say that they succeed at every single thing well some people can but not me for sure! Evalee is a bit of a dork and I really dig that making me all but love the character more.
So our main character finds out her entire life/ relationships are a lie and is heartbroken! This book is definitely a dollar coaster of emotions!! And I cannot wait till the next book comes out!! So I hope she grows more confident in her self and her powers, like she is so used to everyone being mean to her that she had started to believe them! That was something I didn't like about this book, also how Hunter was so possessive and smug about her!! Otherwise I loved this storyline, it is very interesting and cannot for for the next book!!!!! So please hurry!!!!
Actually more entertaining then I would have expected ! Only too bad that it's so short, but luckily there are already 4 "books" of this series, so I can read on. Do think that is the better approach for these, wait until most of them are published so you can continue ! But interesting story so far !
I "one-clicked" this book yesterday after seeing the covers for the series on Instagram, I love books with witches and magic.
This was a fun, fast-paced read. I loved Avelee and her weirdness (as she claims). I'm very intrigued to find out what's about to happen, I'm off to purchase book 2 and get started.
Loved this book! Only reason it didn't get 5 full stars is that it is so short, once you get really invested it ends on a fairly big cliffhanger. I also couldn't give it full stars due to excessive and unnessesary strong cussing that really just distracted from the flow of the story. Cute characters, love the magic feel, and can't wait to read more.
FREAKING AWESOME!!! it's like Sabrina the teenage witch and Pharanorman had a love child, and then that baby was tutored by Cassandra Clare! totally unexpected in a really good way, but i'll admit that i was a little gross out by the talking corpse (sorry)!
The story is very different from what I was expecting and although it was pretty good it definitely wasn't my cup of tea. The book left me with more questions than answer but perhaps some of the questions will be answered in the next book.
Jessica did it again with The Secret Life of a Witch. I absolutely loved this first part and can not wait to finish the rest of the books. They are fun and quirky and the characters and great depth and personality.
I enjoyed this book more then I thought I would! I usually find ‘’magical stories’’ slow and boring, but not this one! I quickly fell in love with Evalee; she quickly formed a soft spot in my heart. She doesn’t know how beautiful and smart she is. Being laughed at all of her life, Evalee sticks to her small group of friends but mainly her best friend Hunter – who also happens to be her crush. I love Evalee’s determination to find a way to bring her sister back to life and to also find her body when it gets stolen. The story flows smoothly and Jessica’s writing catches your attention immediately, I devoured this book! This book ends on a slight cliffhanger and I am in desperate need of the next book right now!
When witch Evalee’s older sister is murdered Evalee uses her strange gift of being able to talk to the dead to try and work out what happened. After digging up Rayleigh’s body and hiding it in her basement, Evalee works to try and create a potion/spell that will bring her sister back to life. But before Evalee can find the right ingredients she needs – how the hell is she going to get her hands on a demon scale?! Her sister’s body is stolen and it’s down to Evalee and Hunter to find her before her body fades. But everytime they think they’re getting their answers and maybe a step closer, trouble arises and it isn’t long until its Evalee that is the one in danger. Will Evalee find her answers? Will she get herself out of the trouble she is in? Will she get her sisters body back? – You will have to wait and see.
4 Star Read: Among some of my favorites. Outstanding literary work. The characters are well developed, interesting. The liked characters are likable and the hated are unlikable. The writing is captivating enough to keep you interested until the end and leave you wanting more. It has a fairly original or uniquely well-developed plot. The pretense and romance were well balanced and done with properly distributed amounts of hints, behaviors, and chemistry. Not so much predictable if at all. Overall, loved it, I recommend reading!!

I feel slightly cheated. I got to the last page and stared at it wondering where the rest of the story is. I like the fact that Sorensen has created a story that I can't wait for the next part.
I like the character of Eva. I think that she has all the makings of a good/bad witch. She isn't like many characters in books that are all powerful. She is quirky and that makes her story that much more fun. I like that her best friend is her sister, though I think that what caused her death and why Eva wants to bring her back or thinks that she can needs to be developed more.
Really looking forward to the next book in the series.
4.5 So great but way to short...I am glad book two is already out but I know it is going to leave me wanting more also...I love, love Jessica's work! Such a mystical mystery here. I am so in love with PNR .... wanting the best friend, the clumsy witch..and missing dead bodies...I am hooked. Who can you trust...is your reality really what it seems? I can't wait to see what book two holds!
I loved this book. Way to short and the only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. I feel like maybe vol 1 and 2 should have been put together for one book. I love the characters. I want to be Evalee's friend. I like that she can talk to the dead and is clumsy. I really can't wait to find out what happens between Evalee and Hunter.
Jessica Sorensen knows how to spin a story! I love her paranormal! Ever since Fallen Star I have read everything I could of hers and this didn't let me down. I need more! Oh my gosh Evalee, Hunter, and Evan...what's next???
