Yūki Tabata (Japanese: 田畠裕基, Hepburn: Tabata Yūki) is a Japanese manga artist.
After working as an assistant to Toshiaki Iwashiro, he created the one-shot Hungry Joker, which was later serialized as a full series. After its conclusion, he launched Black Clover.
This is a review of volumes 9-10 which I read together back to back. See the plot section for my thoughts on the individual volumes.
Asta and Yuno grew up together, abandoned at the same church. They both determined to become Magic Knights... Yuno's abilities soon grew to genius levels of power and control while Asta didn't show even a spark of magic and made up for it by training hard physically. It became apparent to both when they received their grimores, Yuno a coveted 4-leaf clover and Asta an unheard of black 5-leaf clover, that they were each other's biggest competition when it came to achieving their goals of becoming the next sorcerer emperor.
Black Clover vol 9 is all about Yuno... Well and Asta, of course. Yuno gets his time to shine, there that's better... As one star rises the other falls and unfortunately its the one that keeps on going because that's his super power. Yeah so Asta didn't come out of that battle unscathed. And he doesn't stop for a second but against even Yami's wishes pushes to go see the Golden Dawn squad in action. I really loved the pacing in this volume... so perfect.
Suddenly in Black Clover vol 10 we switch gears and meet some new characters that have a history with Asta and we get to visit the hometown of one of the Black Bulls! This time I didn't doubt for a second but dove right in! The battles, the back history and the back door deals were totally stellar... the twist at the end of the volume was crazy good! And I really loved how Asta showed his naivete here wanting to talk, they claim they have problems that the Clover kingdom won't address but they also won't try diplomacy first.
It's no surprise that the answer to Asta's problem from vol 9 is suddenly answered in vol 10, but I wish that there was a little more development up until the moment the Witch Mother gives in. We needed a touch more and instead the tension totally deflates after all the build up in vol 9. I could tell that this won't be the end of it for the Witch Mother so I think I will hold out for Black Clover vol 11 before I really decide how bad the story stumble is...
I really felt the power of Fanzell, Domina and Mariella's back history with the Diamond kingdom. It's obviously not a nice place to live from what we see coming out of that place... Again this is Yuki Tabata's super power, he can make us feel for characters we just met, he can build on what we know of characters we've met previously and he doesn't choose between good, evil or grey, he shows us a little about them all and it makes the world feel lush and full of life.
We have more group battles in Black Clover vol 9-10 so there are many more group shots that are divine! You get a sense of numbers and scale that is unmatched in this pair of volumes. It's really amazing how I have something more to say about the art every time and don't just say I loved it, I loved it, I loved it! On a side not seeing Vangeance without his mask was so, so cool, and I can't help not being satisfied, and I wouldn't be surprised if Yami still has lingering doubts about him as well (I know I do!)
Black Clover vol 9-10 take Asta's story in a totally different direction and keeps it all fresh by tossing in more characters, back story and unexpected character moments that wow! If you haven't picked up this series then I suggest you do so now... hunt it down at the library, download it digitally or better yet just run to the book store and pick it up!

I really, truly wanted to give this book 5 stars, (mostly due to blind devotion), but the events leading up to the epically amazing battle felt too rushed and forced. Still my favorite Manga on the market. Hopefully the manga shortage ends soon, I don’t wanna wait another 6 months to simply finish the next volume. :)
The volume begins very promising, with Asta being depressed over not being able to use his arms and everyone looking for a cure. There is finally some compelling drama, even though it’s an idea stolen from Naruto’s Rock Lee.
Everyone is emotionally devastated, and it seems like they will get character development and new powers because of this event. Even Asta seems like he will start using his legs instead of his arms, which is again an idea stolen from My Hero Academia’s Shoot Style.
Then they find a witch forest where the queen can help Asta, which is again an idea stolen from Naruto’s Tsunade. But she is super powerful and too cruel to help them no matter what. The drama is great up to this point.
And then the author ruins everything by having bad guys conveniently attacking the forest at that specific moment, so the queen can instantly heal Asta to go beat them up. It’s as if everything constantly plays out exactly as it suits the plot, so Asta can always have things going his way, just like Deku in My Hero Academia.
After that we are back to fighting one dimensional evil rapists with tentacles. And just for the sake of subversion the girls Asta saves are not added to his harem because they hate men. Aka, they are ungrateful feminists who can’t accept the fact they need a man to do everything for them. A complete mockery of proper storytelling.
Damn, this is super weird. In this book, there are characters, which were introduced in different media and apparently I am supposed to know them and feel something. They are cool characters, but I do not care. I want this to be included in the main story not that I have to find out about their existence once they are relevant.
Everything is super rushed. Asta recovers in one chapter... What could have been much more is quickly glanced and almost skipped because of the pacing and overall rashness. And because of that everything suffers - no emotions for the characters new or already existing. I am disappointed a lot.
Good Idea: Hidden village of witches with unique powers that no-one else in the world shares!
Bad Idea: Building the arc around characters who were introduced in a random light novel that isn't part of the series (and wasn't ever translated into any other languages), not explaining where they came from, not explaining when they were encountered, yet then treating them as if the audience should just know who they are. There's an entire Reddit thread dedicated to explaining who they are, where they came from, and why the story treats them as if they're old favorites -- because the arc MAKES NO SENSE WITHOUT THAT KNOWLEDGE.
Asta’s guild mates are doing everything they can to find a way to fix his arms which leads us to the Witch’s Forest. Basically they’re a magical Amazonian society that hate men.
We also get introduced to three characters that aren’t even in the main story but have a history with Asta and the other main characters. Honestly the whole time I’m like “WHO ARE YOU PEOPLE??”
Anyway, we do get a lot of action because our heroes are fighting two armies at the same time.
It was pretty good and better than I expected. After having his arms cursed by Vetto, Asta is pretty depressed and the members of the Black Bulls try to find a cure. Vanessa returns to the Witch's Forest and it seems she is a very important person for this place. Of course, Asta and others continue to fight against the villains. Mars comes back and joins the fight. The fight itself was okay in my opinion but I am more curious about the whole deal with Vanessa.
This was quite an exciting volume, but hmm. If I haven't watched the anime before reading this, I would have been totally confused and disconnected with the new characters (Fanzel, Domina, and Mariella). I found out that they originated from a light novel written by a different author (kinda like fanfic, I suppose), and the characters were just added in the manga, without any backstory except for super brief introductions. Without knowing much from their past, their growth in this book looked irrelevant. Like, who would care for some people who just appeared in the middle of the plot, saying that Asta motivated them, blah, blah, blah, when we don't know the full story?
Anyway, aside from that, I pretty much enjoyed reading this volume.
---------
Some random thoughts that I took note of while I was reading: - "I wasn't blessed with any magic. That always frustrated me. But I sure was blessed with great friends!!" - Asta Ahhh, this scene T^T The Black Bulls is more than just a squad. It's a family. And found family is one of my favorite tropes, which is why The Black Bulls have my heart. Their bond and genuine camaraderie are so precious. If one of them dies, I would hunt Tabata-sensei down! - "His bad luck is like his energy. It's in inverse proportion to his height." - Mariella Lmao. That's one way of describing Asta's life. ... I forgot to take more notes after that because the plot got more and more exciting!
Asta gets his arms healed super quick...that was kind of anti-climatic.
Either way then we fight the next wave of baddies. I feel like it's just talk, fun adventures, big baddies, and repeat. Starting to feel a bit like Bleach with the Daja Vu here.
But thankfully it's fast paced, Asta and crew fights are fun to watch, and even though it's nothing special it's fun enough to read.
Uh... Okay, well, on one hand it's really cool to have more Vanessa because I like her boobs, but... so much of this volume is based around characters introduced in some light novel we didn't get in the States, so it's hard to give a shit about some stuff here, especially the little cliffhanger at the very end. Also, Asta gets his arms healed too easily lol

This series keeps getting better and better. I’ve seen the anime from what is out at this point, and it’s such a different experience reading the manga of this beloved series. This book continues the adventures of the Black bulls to the Forest of Witches and all that unfolds there. I love this series, will be continuing on. Overall YET ANOTHER quick easy 5 star read.
While I'm slightly disappointed that Asta's situation with his arms was resolved so fucking fast, I can live with it for now. Especially because this volume was so fucking dope!
My head is spinning from all of the action and character development. Once again, Finral, Vanessa, and Asta team up and their teamwork is incredible! But the best by far was best girl Noelle! I love how even though she's made good progress, she's still held back by her family's treatment of her and she has to be snap herself out of it to improve. Tabata understands that people like Noelle don't just bounce back from years of verbal abuse; it takes time to become stronger both mentally and physically, and it takes a lot of reassurance from others to push past it. And Noelle kicked some serious ass this volume, easily one of the MVP's.
I wanted to learn more about the witches, their culture, and history. I kind of wish we had had some time to discuss it, but considering this is a blisteringly fast paced battle manga series, that wasn't going to happen. Whatevs, hopefully we'll get more info in the future.
I loved seeing the former Diamond Kingdom soldiers stand up to their country's strongest and got to show their stuff. I also liked seeing Mars defend Franzel, implying he could be turning against his country as well. Also, seeing more of that flashback from when the last three eyed villain died has me curious about the Clover Kingdom's past. I have my theories, but I'll keep them to myself for now. But what I like is that we're seeing the same flashback over and over, but with something new added each time. I don't why I like this so much, I just do.
Curious to see where this invasion goes, but I know it's gonna be great!
Whoooooaaaa!! This series is so epic! I’m really glad that Asta’s arms are healed- I wasfeeling a bit worried that it would become a whole arc trying to find a way to get his arms back.
The art is so beautiful. Every character is so awesomely constructed, and I love how each person is trying to overcome their personal demons.
OMG Mars, what is he doing? Is he turning good??? 😲 I hope so, because he looks awesome 😍

Highlights: - The Black Bulls are working together to try to find a cure for Asta's arms. Two groups go to the Witches Forest: 1) Vanessa, who lived there and was one of them once, and 2) Asta, Noelle and Finral join with Fanzell, Domina, and Mariella (three defectors from the Diamond Kingdom who were covered in a story outside the main manga) to go the Witch's Forest as well. - Asta picks a with the Queen of the Witches for being mean to Vanessa. - The Eye of the Midnight Son teams up with the Diamond Kingdom invaders to assault the Witches Forest. - Seeing that Asta can help defend the forest, the Queen uses ancient blood magic to not only get rid of the curse and heal his arms, but makes his bones stronger. - Fana of the Third Eye wants revenge for Vetto, and is using Salamander (a spirit beast similar to Yuno's Sylph, though way more powerful) to spout intense fire magic and hold the Black Bulls back. - Asta encourages Noelle to ramp up her power to fight Fana (She actually says "I'm not done yet!" LOL), specifically her powerful "Sea Dragon" based attacks. - Adding to the damage she caused, Asta adds a new special move he calls "Bull Thrust" - Fanzell joins the fight to fight against Ladros, his old student from when he taught for the Diamond Kingdom. When Ladros takes a sadistic turn with his attacks, Mars jumps in and blocks the attack. (This fight will continue next Volume!)
Overall, another good Volume for Black Clover. Great story progression and flow. Glad to see I'm not sick of it yet! LOL Strong recommend.
I am a bit conflicted about how I feel about this volume of Black Clover. The action in this book was solid but the pacing was a bit clunky. I feel like this story arc still needs more room to breath concerning many of the characters and their back story. I am excited about the direction this story is headed as it looks like we could finally learn the secret of Asta's five leaf clover abilities. I really hope we get more of Vanessa's history in the next chapters because her connection to the witches is really fascinating. Is it me or is this series moving super fast because I was a bit confuse on who heck Zell is and when he came into the series. Or maybe Yuki Tabata just has way too many characters to manage. I still enjoy this series and it really feels like it is becoming a unique series from most the shonen manga I am use to reading. Congratulations are in order for Black Clover as it looks like the anime is going to continue as well. If I was able I think this volume deserves 3.5 stars because I did not hate this volume it just needed to be a little bit better.
