A man stabs his boss before throwing him off the roof of the office building. As Detective Inspector Frank Miller has him cornered on the roof of another building, the killer jumps to his death. A woman sets fire to the hotel kitchen where she works, then stabs and kills two co-workers before leaping to her death from the North Bridge. Miller wonders what would make two, seemingly innocent people commit such atrocious acts. The investigation leads them to a wellness centre. An undercover operation is mounted by Miller and his boss. Then another atrocity occurs, but by then, it's too late. Somebody is literally making life and death decisions, but he isn't finished yet. He's only just started... John Carson is the author of the DI Frank Miller detective series. He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland and lived there most of his life. In 2006, he emigrated to New York State with his American wife and two daughters. They now live in a small town in the Hudson Valley where his wife was brought up, with a German Shepherd, a Beagle mix and four cats.
For some reason this book is written in first person, instead of third like all the previous ones. The overall story line is pretty ridiculous. I like the characters of Percy Purcell and Neil McGovern, but they seem to be almost interchangeable. The same goes for Lou Purcell and Jack Miller. Kim Smith is awfully needy for someone who started off as a highly trained bad ass.
Although I’ve enjoyed the rest in the series, I can’t say the same for this one. I read it in my Kindle which makes it different to reflect on the characters of which there are a large number. There are plots in the book which, to my mind, are completely unnecessary e.g. jack and Samantha going to USA because her sisters son was murdered or the father coming down from Aberdeen to visit a “lady friend”. The main plot is set in Edinburgh and it quite unbelievable. It revolves around 2 psychiatrics who are married are are trying to find a cure for their daughter who has Huntington’s disease. They use visitors to their wellness centre in a castle in the Highlands with drastic consequences. Frank Miller and his team to there undercover to find out what is going on as there have been several unexplained murders in Edinburgh all linked to their visit to the castle. I’ll instantly forgettable and totally unrealistic.
3.5 stars. In someways this is a strange book. I presume the author is a Scotsman who lives in the US as he seems to write knowledgeably about both places. The writing has a harder tone then one usually sees in British police procedurals. The author apparently doesn't have any idea how to write dialog for child characters as what he has is much too adult. I also thought that there were too many peripheral characters which made portions of the story hard to follow.
Really not worth the effort of reading. Ridiculous plot, ridiculous behaviour of the main characters. Riddled with cliché and predictability and indeed factual errors. Occasional engaging banter but genuinely nothing else good. Please don't waste your time. Mr Carson, you have to be able to do better than this.
Another thriller! Each mystery is very different from the others in the series. That is why it is an exciting reading adventure to read one right after another. I have read the first 6 books in about a week and an ready to start the next one when I complete this review. Enjoy!
Seems farfetched but authors have tremendous licence . A castle in Scotland , spa weekends ... maybe . Lol In this case think mad scientists . Well worth your time to read .
I'm loving this series, interesting stories, maybe a bit far fetched but very entertaining. Great character's and it was good to get to know more about the newbies Steffi and Jenni. Now onto the next 😁
I did not think I would say this so soon, but it is possible that this book has been the most exciting one in the Frank Miller series so far. There are basically 3 storylines...each plot intricate and anxiety producing. Very, very good writing.
I enjoyed this book and when at the end, she said she was pregnant I was looking forward to book 8 to see what happened next, so why has book 8 in the series gone back to when Miller was only just moving in with Carol ? Weird
Belly up to the bar, boys! We have another winner! Here’s Johnny keeping the reader on the edge of their seat. This book has more bumps, twists and turns than ruffles has ridges. Wear a helmet. I’m onto the next one. Cheers!
Entertaining, however, I found it somewhat confusing trying to keep track of which character was in what location...that's just me, I think. Enjoyed the ending, something I could not have guessed.
To unreal to be believed.. too many people.side show in America unnecessary. Whole story too far fetched. Still worth a read. Will maybe read another..
Read all six now and they kept on getting better, really good story lines great characters and I like the family involvement.Look forward to next in series.
