About the author

Nicholas Gage (born Nikolaos Gatzoyiannis; Greek: Νίκος Γκατζογιάννης) is a Greek-American author and investigative journalist.
Gage started out as an investigative reporter for the New York Times, and later wrote for the Wall Street Journal. His experiences as a reporter were the basis for the television show “The Andros Targets”.
He is most famous for two autobiographical memoirs, the best-selling Eleni (translated into 32 languages, and adapted into film) and A Place for Us.

Συγκλονιστικό και συναρπαστικό. Αυτές οι δύο λέξεις περιγράφουν το βιβλίο αυτό που μιλά για τις πιο μαύρες σελίδες της ελληνικής Ιστορίας. Από τη μία συγκλονίζουν οι περιγραφές των δεινών που υπέστησαν οι κάτοικοι των ορεινών χωριών που βρέθηκαν στη δίνη του πολέμου, της κατοχής και του εμφυλίου, από την άλλη σε συναρπάζει (με έντονο σασπένς) η προσπάθεια της μάνας να σώσει τα παιδιά της ακόμη και σε βάρος της δικής της ζωής, παρόλο που η ιστορία είναι γνωστή και ξέρουμε την κατάληξη εκ των προτέρων. Το βιβλίο, ως ντοκουμέντο που είναι (όλα τα γεγονότα που περιέχονται στο βιβλίο έχουν διασταυρωθεί από τουλάχιστον δύο μάρτυρες και όλα τα ονόματα είναι πραγματικά) διδάσκει Ιστορία από μία σκοπιά από την οποία δεν μπορούν να το κάνουν τα εγχειρίδια Ιστορίας, αλλά επιπλέον διαθέτει αναμφισβήτητες αφηγηματικές αρετές.

Long overdue read for me.
For Greeks, the civil war is -whether we like it or not- part of our collective consciousness, our shared silenced guilt and shame.
It is still very much a political taboo. It is still not taught in schools as no government dare to touch it and yet it is ideologically weaponized politically by left and right alike. The passions still lurk beneath the actual history and this is evident when you try to read commentary about this book. For some this book is an inspiring eye-account masterpiece of crimes committed while for others this is CIA orchestrated attempt to defame the true heroes of the era.
I will not even pretend I make sense of all this
Somewhere between all this mess lies the realisation of the abhorrent potential for atrocities lurking deep inside the human psyche. Civil conflicts have always the same emerging pattern of horror. That story of normal, next-door people, brothers, neighbours, colleagues which are eventually proven capable of committing atrocities towards their next of kin if stirred by the right kind of forces.

Το βιβλίο θυμίζει αρχαία τραγωδία, η θυσία μιας μάνας , που ( άλλοτε παίρνει τη θέση του Λεωνίδα που φυλάει τις Θερμοπύλες, άλλοτε της Αντιγόνης που γεννήθηκε για να αγαπάει και όχι να μισεί κι άλλοτε της Ιφιγένειας που είναι το εξιλαστήριο θύμα ) . Ο δεύτερος τόμος ειδικά στα τελευταία κεφάλαια διαβάζεται απνευστί , έντονο σασπένς στο τέλος του βιβλίου εκεί που συναντιούνται ο θυμός, η πίκρα, το παράπονο , η ανάγκη για εκδίκηση

Συγκλονιστικό και διαφωτιστικό για τον εμφύλιο στη χώρα μας. Φωτίζει όλη την περίοδο από το 1940-1948.
