It’s been a while since I’ve been in the manga world of Haikyu, and it was a welcoming return. In this volume, we get the ending of the Aoba Johsai vs Date Tech match decider for the team to verse Karasuno in the semi finals, as well as the the start of the semifinal match. I love the representation of how the Karasuno team has improved over time, as well as the introduction of the new ‘Iron Wall’ of Date Tech, with Kogane, who is just a very tall bean of a boy. I love this series, and hopefully won’t be too long to continue along. Overall, no issues, love this book, 5 stars.
I read almost all of this last night (except the last two chapters) and it took me a little bit to go to sleep because I had been so sucked into this volume and kept thinking about it! Aoba Johsai is SOOOOO intense!
But even before that, I had totally forgotten how awesome Koganegawa is!!! Oh my goodness, he is SO precious!! Like I feel I've bumped him up on my list of favorite characters outside of Karasuno! I admire how enthusiastic he is and wanting to give his all. I cannot wait to meet him again! Absolutely love him!!
I must say that Furudate is amazing! I was thinking last night that just from a writer's perspective, he really knows how to balance the characters against one another. Koganegawa and Mad Dog are a prime example. These guys couldn't be more light and day, but somehow they create this really interesting balance and help capture the heart of both teams.
Though speaking of teams, I had quite a bit of nervous energy when Karasuno enters the match with Aoba Johsai! Like it had a brand new intensity then their earlier match and that's probably because this IS the rematch.
It was an excellent volume and LOVED when Suga got to come on the court! He really is absolutely amazing! <3
Hopefully next time Hinata can make another epic and successful back row attack since someone decided to ruin his debut. ;p LOL!
Okay again, don't want to say much cuz of spoilers and this is such an intense arc I want others to experience it spoiler free, but here're three takeaways from this volume:
1. Oikawa is so fucking smug and obnoxious that I want to punch him in the teeth, but what makes it worse is that he's so damn good at what he does I can't totally hate him.
2. Kageyama and Hinata are really showing how much they've grown since their first match with Aoba Johsai, both as a team and individuals and I love it.
3. I adore Furudate's stylistic touches to the sound effects during the match between Karasuno and Aoba Johsai. It's such a small touch, but it really adds to the enjoyment and action of each panel.
Anyway, I have to immediately read the next volume because OMG THAT CLIFFHANGER!! Can't wait to see where this match goes!
Date Tech must face Aoba Johsai and the winner will play Karasuno in the semi-final match of the tournament. Will the addition of their new 1st-year setter help sway the match?
The outcome of the Date Tech/Aoba Johsai match is pretty obvious but fun to read nonetheless. I like Kogane as a character and the synergy between him, Aone, and Futakuchi. I also love Aone’s and Hinata’s camaraderie.
The anticipated rematch between Aoba Johsai and Karasuno is as good as one would expect, though I’m not keen on their new player (he’s boring tbh). Having watched the anime (twice) I know how the match plays out, but it’s still fun to revisit it in a different format.
The semifinal matches are under way in this most recent volume, and apparently the author was hoping a new character introduced on the opposing team to upset the flow of play would carry the story this volume, but it fell flat for me. This sort of failure is a rare instance in this series, so I'm looking forward to a better effort next time.
After beating Date Tech, Aoba Johsai advances to the Semifinals who are now facing Karasuno in their next game. Karasuno took the first set but about to lose the second set because Bluecastle has unleashed 'Mad Dog' upon Karasuno who is scoring points after times for his team. With Karasuno's loss against Aoba Johsai still fresh, only a miracle can save Karasuno now.
I don't care about Kyotani. He's a boring character that adds nothing to the team dynamic. Plus, it feels out of character for Aoba Johsai to pull such a move. It goes against everything we've been told about the team. Ignoring that, it's cool to see the 6-2 rotation in action.
oikawa is the best character for sooo many reasons but #1 is he's the most dynamic antagonist of all haikyuu so far. Really obliterated the girls with his super triple homo jump serve!
This counts as my review for the whole Haikyuu!! manga
”You don’t win alone. That’s just how it is.”
READ FOR: best character developments and themes that I have ever encountered READING LEVEL: Level 1-3 out of 5
*All of my reviews are as spoiler-free as possible unless stated otherwise*
I don’t think I’ll ever have enough words to express how much I love this manga and anime series but I’ll try anyway. But I just need to make it known that this has changed my view in anime and manga forever. I caught up with this manga in the last 30 or so chapters but I won’t say much to avoid spoilers... but it was crazy.
It made me laugh, cry, fall in love, think, and honestly... what else do you need in a series? I can keep going on and on about this series but honestly I think you should just read it for yourself. I really don't think you'll regret it.
When someone asks me what the plot is, honestly, all I can say is “they play volleyball” HAHAHA… but it’s so much more than that.
PLOT: ★★★★★ The plot was so well thought of from the very beginning and when I re-read the manga I can’t believe the amount of foreshadowing Furudate actually placed. My mind was so blown… I just. No words. I am seriously in love.
ART STYLE: ★★★★★ The art style… *chef’s kiss* especially in the later arcs. There were so many matches but even then Furudate never failed to leave me breathless at each one.
CHARACTERS: ★★★★★ The character development here is THE BEST. HANDS DOWN. that I have ever come across. I fell in love with the so many characters in this series that I did not even think that was possible.
The character relationships... the character dynamics... their mindsets... they are all so perfectly well done and realistic GAHHHH I've said this so many time throughout this review BUT THEY JUST MADE ME FALL IN LOVE SO EASILY. I can't pick my favourite one but hinata and kageyama just hold a special place in my heart.
This connects to the themes but my favourite thing that was done with the characters here was that each one of them embodied a theme or a message that the author wanted to get across. Those are spoilers so I won’t really talk about it but just know that it was one of the main reasons that made me go so crazy about this series.
*cough* hinata kageyama atsumu sakusa bokuto kita noya ushijima tendou tsukki suga kenma kuroo *cough* +++
Note: if you think this series is focused on only 1 team... you're in it for A RIDEEEEEE
I'm getting chills just looking at and remembering these panels ^^
THEMES: ★★★★★ Honestly I basically thought the themes were just gonna be “teamwork” and “friendship”… while it is all that, Furudate sensei was able to make it even deeper.
I think the one that was focused on the most was “It’s not always about winning, it’s about growth”. But there were also so many smaller things that lead up to that bigger point: (1) we get our strength from others, (2) but you also need to make yourself dependable, (3) there is always room for improvement, (4) working hard is good but overworking yourself isn’t, (5) you are built on the small things you do everyday, (6) an ace's back should be an inspiration to your teammates (hi bokuto), (7)+++
The way I wrote it was very straight to the point but I was amazed at how Furudate tackled the so many messages that I received from this series.
PACING: ★★★★★ THE TIMING. OF EVERYTHING. JUST MAKES SENSE.
It’s so realistic that I want to cry. (I actually already did… a lot of times.)
PAGE TURNER: ★★★★★
You should understand that I made this review weeks after I finally calmed down about this series cuz I was really going crazy about it HAHAHA if you have finished this series too or met me while I was reading this, you know what I’m talking about ;)
I'll keep this series close to my heart until the grave. You cannot convince me otherwise.
Hands down one of the funniest volumes of the series! I always laugh out loud at the other volumes, mostly at Tanaka or Hinata but EVERYTHING was making me laugh, even if it was a facial expression or a glance at a certain player! And it's such great humour too :')
MY TRASH SO OIKAWA IS BACK. I hate him but I love him, but I'm just glad to see him back on my pages.
This match is so intense. Mad Dog is literally the worst. Cmon Karasuno! I know you can do this!!!!
“Look that moment of despair right in the face…and smash through it.”
4.25 stars - reading a game that didn’t involve Karasuno was fun. Loved how the other Aoba Johsai third-years teased Oikawa before his first serve too - quite a sweet scene
“mad dog-chan” gets me every time LMAO. also very cool of oikawa having to treat the boys to ramen bc his first serve was received lol. but otherwise i just went karasuno to win...
-omg that cover with oikawa as a soldier and kindaichi as a horse thingy with iwa saying, "speak up if you wanna stop!" LOL -not date tech's thirs year guy showing karasuno 3rd years the finger PLIS -date teach: blocks oikawa oikawa: LOOKS SCARED AS HELL -love how kogane's intelligence is 1 -please hinata's is q u i v e r i n g watching that match -iwaizumi with that 'yes' SHEESH HE LOOKS AMAZING OOF -oikawa: looks like i still have a long way to go, huh [wow he's talking about how iwa was able to spike it but he couldnt oof] -"dont strip out here." [128] -aone: it isn't always the strong hitters, or the big ones that are the hardest to stop. -PLS YACHI HAS A WHOLE FIRST AID BAG -omg daichi looked so cute in the bg when he called kiyoko san -AAA YACHI ENCOURAGING YAMS TO TALK ABOUT HIS FEARS>>>>>>>>>> -yachi: my heart feels like its going to crawl out my mouth yams: SWALLOW IT BACK DOWN -i love how hinata makes a snide remark at kags and then moves into the ultimate 'you wanna fight' defensive position -BABY KAGS EATING A RICE BALL IS JUST TOO CUTE -aw hinata just said that kags is better for karasuno that oikawa if he were there -plis daichi looks so cool when he put on his jackeT LIKE damn -KIYOKO OMG WHEN SHE SAVED YACHI OMG OMGOMGOMG HOTDAMN -"we have faith in you, captain." -when noya set the ball seijoh's libero just grinned like shit wow they stole my line -kunimi's tch plis -suga+ennoshita: thoogithima tanaka: aaa i feel so dumb tsukki: um, could you all PLEASE STOP that now? -ah its matsunn- THE BLOCKER HINATA SAID HE HATED THE MOST LOL -SEIJOH'S ARM WRESTLING CONTEST PLIS -NOT IWA CHAN WEARING THAT CHAMPION RIBBON

This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
4 1/2 seijoh fills up literally 87% of my heart like how can you speak against stone-face 佛-vibe mattsun intimidating the living fuck out of hinata to limit his spiking range, bitchkawa, joint narration by court baddies kunimi & yahaba, and mad dog being a very bad dog??? and i think we can all agree that airhead iwa
the remaining 13% is dedicated to yams’s genuine fear that if tsukki learns to manifest the iron wall with his blocking he’s going to reject all of yams’s captured cicadas from that point forth + saeko, yacchi & kiyoko in halloween costumes LOL i will literally lose my mind
the game with aoba johsai my heart <3 this game is so good and so interesting. you can tell each and every moment where karasuno just.. grows as a team and it makes me so happy. something about oikawa just gets on my nerves though and seeing him miss a few serves makes me laugh lol
Adoro a Oikawa. El pobre está un poco en segundo plano aquí, pero lo adoro igualmente. Sobre todo junto a Iwaizumi. Está el partido tenso y emocionante y ahora necesito el siguiente tomo. Sí, sé cómo acaba, but who cares xDDDDD.
Still in love with this series. Still in love with the characters. Still in love with how the matches are going down (Aoba Johsai has mad skills).
7/6/18 (Before Reading)
Sorry if my progress with this is very inconsistent prior to a page number status update. I was in Chicago for a trip and was trying to find a good time to start this volume, but never did.
