The Hackford house was busy as the rain in Basildon slowed to showers from steady rain. The sun showed itself for a longer part of the day and the temperatures were on the rise. It was the time of year that the four Hackford children who were still living in the house cleaned and dusted every nook and cranny. Hattie Hackford had given birth to eight children; they were respectively; John Jr, George, Flora, Milton, Nattie, Olivia, Eliza and Homer. John Jr and Flora were dead; Milton and Nattie were married leaving the others living with their parents until they too married. John Hackford was a barrister and provided well for his family even though he didn’t have exorbitant wealth.
