A page-turner. A true tale of wickedness, despair, and redemption. Not to be missed.
”What kind of life is this you live? Can you remember even one day you didn’t go to bed afraid and wake up afraid?”
These are the words Jena Parks says, looking in the mirror as a child.
Imagine being a child and every day a desperate struggle to survive. This was the life Jena endured from birth until the day she escaped the living nightmare of her father’s abuse.
In The Fear of the Blow , Jena tells her candid personal story of the cruelty, abuse, and terror her father inflicted upon her, her brother, and her mother. She provides an insider perspective on the horrors of domestic violence and child abuse that inform and inspire the reader to help those who struggle.
From the opening passages, Parks tells us of being witness to spousal abuse as her father would hit and kick her mother. She then begins to recount stories of her father’s “games” in which he would routinely nearly strangle his children.
Verbal and physical beatings were a daily occurrence. Jena lived in terror of her father’s rage, often made worse by his alcoholism.
She tells of the delight he would take in threatening to kill her or her mother.
Parks helps the reader to understand how domestic violence can take root and go unchallenged for years - often until too late.
She reminds us that child abuse, spousal abuse, and domestic violence thrive in silence - and that they form the most secretive and horrific epidemics known today.
It is through educating ourselves about the reality of domestic violence that we can gain insight into the extensive and crippling effects on the children who are born into and raised inside of that dark world. And this empowers us to speak up and take action to help those in need.
The Fear of the Blow is sure to break your heart, open your mind, and inspire courage and faith.
Jena Parks is a committed to raising awareness about the prevalence of Domestic Violence and Child Abuse. She has written The Fear of the Blow in the hope of empowering others to speak up and to find a safe way out before it's too late.
Because Child Abuse and Domestic Violence thrive in the silence please join Jena on her mission to shine a light on this epidemic. The only way we can stop it is to reveal it, to stand up and tell the truth, tell our stories and create real change in a still broken system that traps so many helpless women and children inside this Russian roulette life.
Jena’s experiences expose the extreme cruelty and wickedness of which some are capable, but also points you to the place where one can always find hope and a safe harbor.

This book is not fiction. This story is the painful and eye opening story of abuse and alcoholism and how it truly affects young children.
Jena is a child that has seen her mother, brother, and herself brutalized, threatened, and traumatized by as drunken father.
This book may trigger readers but the good from her story makes it a necessary read. Mr Parks acts in such detrimental ways to his entire family while projecting kindness as and civility to the public.
With very touching talks with God Jena finds strength and truth so me times shocking revelations. You are taken into the world and mind of an abusive home life and daily events explain how the victims are not thinking as people in a functional and moving home think and react.
As painful as these details are there is a sense of growth, maturity, and hope. Strong and complex, it is a worthwhile read.
A Gripping And Heartbreakingly Story Readers will find This book very hard to get through, However everyone should read this book as The fact that a father can be so cruel to both his wife and children that they should love and cherish invokes rage towards Jena’s father who should have been looking out for his wife and his children, and not the one who neglected and tortured them. It is heart wrenching to read of such verbal, emotional, and physical Abuse, by this Alcoholic father.
I have never personally experienced domestic violence but have read plenty of books on this subject. Jena writes about watching her mother and brother be abused by her father, as well as being abused herself. Jena your story is heart breaking to read and I wondered why your mum did not just leave but I felt I understood from reading your story conveying, very honestly and vividly your fear of you all being murdered by your father. Jena shares her pain, joy, love, and regrets in this book. Jena has the ability to rise above all her experiences as she faces the challenges in her life. She shows us what we are capable of doing if we only refuse to accept the terrible circumstances in which we find ourselves even at the hands of those closest to us In this book there are plenty of warning signs that not only you will hear from the victim but extended family new about abuse their brother was capable of but did nothing. As children they were utterly defenceless, and my heart goes out to Jena her brother and mum and the fact that nobody outside your immediate family ever stepped in. I also strongly encourage you to read this book if you want to understand more about the inner turmoil child abuse causes and that there is a process to recover from it. I very rarely write a book review but this book compelled every sensibility within me. Let me start by saying that reading The Fear of the Blow, by Jena Parks, took me on a very emotional journey from start to finish and left me forever changed. I've never personally experienced domestic violence but have a very good female friend that has. And while my heart breaks for any person that finds themselves living this kind of horror, I have to admit, I'm always wondering why in the world didn't she just leave, just get out! I think as a man, it's a very hard thing to grasp. What Jena Parks does a brilliant job of is conveying, very honestly and vividly, how a family - particularly the children, get trapped inside of this hellish terror and struggle beyond anything most of us can fathom just to get to safety. And for many it never happens. And many lose their lives. The tragedy of it all, as Jena so aptly points out, is that the victims are typically surrounded by people that should be able to recognize that something is very off. I can't recommend this book highly enough and what I hope Jena's brave efforts in writing this book achieve is that we begin to focus much more on the biggest victims of domestic violence; the children. They are the only ones involved that are truly and utterly defenseless. It's incomprehensible to me that any parent would deprive their own child of the very basics; love, protection and nurture. These days everywhere we look we see a new cause or movement. I can't help but wonder where is the movement to protect children like Jena? Where?
This book was a very difficult a read for me. This story is one that really attacks your emotions. It really needs a warning label and to come with a box of tissues. The author puts the truth of what happens behind many closed doors. It is heart wrenching to read all that went on, It is a strong reminder to not judge one another. Sometimes a smile is not just a smile. But it could be no more than a wall that hides years of emotional pain and abuse. However this book is inspiring at its core. What I found really different is that it's written from the perspective it is written from. We tend to think of battered women when it comes to domestic violence. This author does a wonderful job of with this pointing out that the youngest victims are the ones most profoundly affected by all this. Most of us are fortunate that we never know this kind of fear in our entire lives. Especially not at the hands of our own parents. This book is extremely well-written and worth a read just have those tissues handy. If you do like this book, please consider leaving a review. The Authors really like it when you do; they value your opinions too
This is certainly an emotional and hard book to read. The topic of family domestic abuse is tough, and most people shy away from it. And this is exactly why it is so prevalent in our country and is able to go on for so long in many households. What this book does is gives the reader a inside story of someone who grows up in a house where all family members are being terrorized by one, in this book it’s the father. Verbal, emotional, physical, all types of abuse is heaped upon the wife, son and daughter for years before they are able to escape. Gaining this insight about how this abuse is enabled to go on and on will be effective in helping us all speak out when we see something happening and hopefully this book will be able to save some lives. I really liked the book. I cannot like the story other than that it is an accurate portrayal of what can go on in an abusive household. But it was well written and the resources that are given are great in giving us a reference point in where to go when we need it.
In this book, Jena Parks tells a very personal story of all forms of abuse. Her experience cuts across different stages from her childhood to her final liberation. It wasn’t an easy experience to watch your mother being brutally maltreated by a drunk dad. Like that wasn’t enough. He threatens to strangle—and even made attempts at almost strangling his children to death. Jena draws our attention to some reasons these domestic abuses often go unpunished—unchallenged for so many years. Jena’s father to the public was a very polite and civilized man, but inside, he was someone else—a monster. His anger is fueled even more by his drinking habits. Jena continued to pray to God as a child for her family situation. I paused several times throughout the story to meditate as the author re-emphasized her experience repeatedly. I also love the fact that as an adult Jena is doing something great—creating awareness of this evil that goes almost unnoticed daily. This is one book that has the power to create an awareness of domestic violence.
All I can say is wow! This story is so deep and touching. It made me cry for this young girl, her mom and her brother. The years they spent dealing with domestic abuse is heartbreaking. I literally couldn’t put this book down from start to finish and was praying that someone would save them the entire time! I nearly laughed with Joey at the end just happy to know they were finally free! It’s a true rising from the ashes kind of story. I truly see this book helping young girls in her situation and hopefully they will know that it’s okay to fight back and make a stand against abuse. It took so much courage to write this book, but she already knew she was capable of anything after the hell she survived! My only advice is to keep Kleenex handy because this book will truly touch your heart. I can’t wait to read everything else she has!
This is a story of abuse and it is very heartbreaking. The author tells her story for us to take this journey through her eyes. Her experiences are horrifying to think about. This is a story that everyone should read and try to understand what the thought process is when faced with this situation. Jena is a hero for first surviving this ordeal and being able to make a productive life moving forward and second for having the courage to share this story with the world. I applaud her strength and ability to continue through life talking about those horrible events that she experienced. I would recommend this book to everyone who reads. Make sure you have some tissues nearby because you will probably need them. Amazing real life story of events that seem tragic yet build a stronger person.
The Fear of the Blow: A Young Woman's Gut Wrenching Story of Child Abuse, Domestic violence, Alcoholism and Redemption by Jena Parks is not a book for the timid. This is an excruciating and horrendous tale of terror which is completely heartbreaking. The author takes us on an unequaled journey through her eyes, and we truly feel all of the emotions that she feels. While this is somewhat difficult to read, as it details horrific actions, there is a glimmer of hope here for victims to come out of bad situations and regain their lives. A compelling story that is very well written, this book will make you cry with it's honesty, and hopefully cheer on all women who find themselves in unfortunate situations to get a little courage, rebuild their lives and move on to something bigger and better. Very inspiring and a motivational read for sure.
The Fear of the Blow is based on the real story of a family that underwent domestic assault for a number of years. The story is heart rendering and pathetic as a child constantly witnesses her mother being on the receiving end of her father's abuses. The child lives in forever fear that her father would do some sort of harm to any member of her family and is yet helpless to do anything about it. The mother teaches her children certain safety strategies to help her kids deal with the horrors. This story is not for entertainment but for awareness. It teaches us to be aware of the telltale signs of abuse if we find it in people around us and to reach out to help them. Also, the story sheds light on the psychological problem of the abusers and how they could be helped by timely therapy to help them and their families lead a normal life.
Jena Parks takes the reader on the true heart-wrenching journey of how she fought through and witnessed child abuse, alcoholism, and domestic violence. Parks tells her story with great detail to help show the struggles and pain she had to endure and how it not only affected her, but those around her. Her writing brings the reader into the situation to help show them what it was like for her and her family during these times.
This book is designed to help others look closely for signs of these problems and how they can help those who are suffering from them. The book has over 12 chapters, each of which shows a different scene in Parks’ life and documents the abuse she and her family had to go through. This book runs at 214 pages long so it’s a little bit of read, but it’s well worth investing some time into.
I found this book to be well-written and astoundingly close to my own story;only with me, it was my own mother who was the monster, and ended up in several foster homes trying to get away from her.I had made myself a promise at thirteen, that if I ever was so lucky to have a daughter, I would never treat her the way my mom had treated me. I lived up to that promise and my daughter knows that I worked hard to break the chain of abuse in our family.I married three times to abusers and I didn't think I deserved any better because of my mother's abuse of me one of them divorced me, but I divorced the other two,and have lived a coparabl content if not happy celebrate life for the past 35-40 yearsy
S. This book reminded me of the fact that I had escaped, and couldn't let it affect my children, who grew up poor, but happy.
I didn't know that this novel would hit me as hard as it did. My childhood was exactly the same except my father never went after my sister and I. But oh the terror we went through every weekend watching our mom try to defend herself! The screams, the crying, we girls begging him to stop, the blood, our mothers broken back. I often wonder why no one tried to help us, and then I remember how things were in the 60's and 70's. Dad was in the Air Force and men ruled all. Although I hate to say this, it gives me some comfort knowing we weren't the only children who had to grow up with a monster. We always felt so alone, my sister and I. Thank you for sharing your story with everyone. I hope that your life has been happy since and bless your sweet mom and Nate. Wishing all the best for your family!
Wow. I knew this book would trigger some major emotional reactions and it did, but it is so powerful. This book will definitely tug at your heart-strings, and it is shocking to know what many people suffer through the hands and mouths of those who are severe alcoholics. I admire the author, Jena, for voicing her afflictions to the world in hopes to raise awareness of what may be really going on in the lives of those touched by merciless people who are influenced furthermore by alcoholism. The book will make you cry, but it also offers hope and light for those who are in danger or in pain. This was a life-changing book, and I am glad I read it.
This book is so emotional. It makes you empathize and become emotional with the characters of the book. This book is well written and edited. There are a couple of misses but very few. I think there needs to be one more book where Jena tells how her adult life and her brothers life turned out. Did they break the cycle of violence. The father was vile and I agree with her conclusions about her father and God. He loves all his children even the ones who do vile things to their families. He gives everyone an opportunity to change. Even though it pains me to reconcile to that fact.
Great book!!!! One of the best domestic violence books I've ever read. I read it in one sitting. I find myself wanting to know what happens to Jena next. Hopefully there's a part 2 because I need to know! The author draws you in so well and you become very invested in Jena. What I liked most about this book is underneath all the pain and suffering there's real inspiration to be found at the core of Jena's story.
Such a compelling story, I could not put this book down! Very well written. This author pulls the reader into the story so well that you're hanging on every word. Courageous. Inspiring. Heartbreaking. Hopeful. You don't want to pass on this one, it is definitely worth the read! I'm looking most forward to the follow up. Now I see why it ranked #1 on Amazon.
My sister was married to a man much like Richard. They have 3 kids. This book spoke to me on so many levels but it especially made me think about what my 2 nieces and nephew must have suffered through all those years. And it makes me think about the lasting effects that living in a constant state of fear had on them. This is a heartbreaking story but a story I think is important to read. The things that most need changing in this world are the things hardest to look at. Thanks for sharing your story Jena, I'm sure it wasn't easy but know it will help many. It did me.
The Fear of the Blow is very well written and will draw the reader in to the point you really don't want to put the book down. I read it in one sitting.
This book was an amazing story! Many live this way unfortunately! I felt the hair on my arms stick up more than once! I don't however feel even though alcoholism is listed as a disease. I believe it starts as a learned choice! Yeah not too sorry about that either. I am however very pleased to always have God to talk too!
Exceptional in every way. But also very, very difficult to read because of the severity of the abuse suffered. Yet there is a ray of light and hope and a message of redemption laced throughout Jena's story. Very well written and expressed in such a way that you can feel every emotion.
The fortitude and strength that it took, to not only survive, but to thrive through a harrowing childhood nightmare was so inspiring. And the reliance on God was a true testament of faith. A great read.
Hard to put down! So honest & emotional. Hard to understand how abuse happens & continues with no one aware, but this book explains it so that you feel a heart tug & are right there with them.
I enjoyed reading this book although being a child of abuse myself it was very hard to read at times. One thing the praying parts were in there a little much and redundant. But i do understand why some of them were included.
a brave, open hearted, honest account of what children go through when trapped inside a home filled with rage, addiction and violence. five resounding stars.
Very intense and sad story... This story is so heartbreaking. I just could not stop reading. I had to know that Jena her mom and her brother were going to be ok....
