The Devil's Whisper

Rate this book
Take a moment and imagine your history books devoid of war. Envision entire civilizations absent of heinous crimes against humanity. A planet spared from the plagues of slavery, cultural genocides, and the colonization of indigenous nations by foreigners. Would you dare make the choices necessary to maintain this Utopia in which universal peace existed? Could you ignore the Devil whispering in your ear, luring you away from a world in which loving your fellow man was the expectation, not the exception?

In a state of reverie, an impractical idea of world peace has given birth to a culture in which the human race has chosen to live free of violent criminals. Instead, criminals have been systematically exiled to the lone prison city, Katingal, constructed in a far corner of Earth. Sentenced for the remainder of their natural lives, the wicked pit themselves against their soulless brethren. Exposure, disease, and starvation claim their victims daily. Those who survive nature’s wrath negotiate the perils of the prison city through murder and cannibalism. All the while, this inimitable death sentence satisfies civilization’s aim to punish the world’s irretrievable outcasts.

Charles “Yäbälay” Gravo is the criminal mastermind behind the world’s largest human trafficking network. As a prime most-wanted fugitive, he sets into motion events that will forever alter the realities of both civilization’s Utopia and Katingal’s Hell.

What did I just read?

In a world where all criminals end up in K-city (Hell), the hero, a violent pedophile and murderer, tries to survive.

The good: A lot of twists, a lot of suspense and an enjoyable mystery side. I also liked Elaina, she is a fighter, a good woman and a clever one too.

The bad: The futuristic touch is lost on me, we don't really get to know this future world. There is a long presentation at the beginning but after that, we can't "see" or "live in" this future space.

The ugly: The number of rapes in the book is insane: minors, women, men, nasty details including sick penises or feces... Did we learn anything? Did we get anything from it ? I don't think so, it wasn't necessary, the cruelty of the world is very clear from the beginning. In the end, it just looks like an attempt to prevent Elaina from being the best / main character.

This book *sigh* I feel I have to break out in my local language to actually express how I felt reading it. But since very few people know Lunda (African language, Google it and learn something new today!) I will refrain from using it.

When I first opened this book, I swear I was ready to get bored. After a string of bad books that had me questioning literature and my love for books, you can imagine my surprise when the first few sentences captured my mind.

To be honest anything with a little sex in it wakes me up (do not judge, I am human and so are you!) but then the next sentence had me halting my thoughts. I cringed and maybe reconsidered my love for all things involving sex. I could have stopped after that but it was the first book I had liked in days and I really didn't want to stop. I am really glad I didn't because It was such a great read.

Okay so maybe there were moments I did not like and some I wasn't so proud of but this book captured my mind and I was so determined to see how these villains would get the worst death in the world. I know I should be reviewing the book and not talking about my reaction but isn't that the whole essence of reviewing? Telling people how a book made you feel?

I am horrible because I give out a lot of spoilers but I am really trying to change so I will hold off my tongue for now. This book is basically about criminals, it invites you into their world and thoughts and makes you question your emotions and thoughts. It's all centred on surviving KCity and like me before reading the book, you are probably wondering what that is. It is a deserted city that has been turned into a prison for the worst criminals in the world. Now before you think of a regular prison, no, this isn't it. This is hell. A prison based in the desert where you are left to fend for yourself. No food, no rules, no water, no nothing but savages who kill, destroy and do all sorts of things. No one ever plans on going to jail except for that guy who robbed the bank to escape his wife and I will never understand that; but this jail has you rethinking your sainthood and wishing you were as righteous as Jesus. Some of us even joke about how we wouldn't be able to last a day in a prison and wish to never see the inside of one but this prison is one you wish never existed. It's a piece of hell that gives me the creeps and scares the fuck out of me. It makes me want to be an upstanding citizen for the rest of my life.

So the story follows Charles (I hated him but felt so sorry for him and then again I hated him even more but really wanted to understand why he was like that.) and Eliana (I liked her, I know what she did was crazy but call me weird or crazy I definitely understood where she was coming from and I feel she didn't deserve to go to KCity) these are two criminals who are sentenced to live the rest of their lives on K City. In order to survive K City one can't cope on their own, they need to form alliances and team up to form a certain pact to survive. It's a city filled with the worst criminals in the world who would do anything for food, sex and power. A place where women are treated as sex objects, objected to diseases, rape and pregnancies. Even the weakest and strongest men aren't safe. So these two form a pact and decide to help defend each other in this cruel environment. But things never go as one plans and they go through the strangest and worst conditions ever.

Caution this story is not for the lightheaded and one must really have an open mind when reading it but i swear it's definitely worth the read. I felt really conflicted reading this book, I didn't get how I could sympathise with Charles and then hate him after I was just rooting for his rehabilitation. It was really annoying. But there were so many things about him that were admirable and I just cringed for saying that. I really was in Eliana's corner, she was strong and a force to be reckoned with but what I really liked the most about her was that she wasn't looking for pity, she knew what she had done and all she really wanted to do was rest. Anyway these two go through the worst of things and also do the worst of things which I really don't get! Come on Charles did you really have to do that?

Look maybe I am not making sense but Charles really got to me. I feel everything I will have to say from here on out will be a spoiler so let me just conclude. This book is amazing, it captured my mind and the writer's style of writing really reminded me of Paulo Coelho. It was definitely worth my time and I am so happy I read it. It will make you mad but don't stop, go on read it and prepare to be floored because I was.

This is definitely one of the best books I have read this year!
Oh and one last thing, Fuck you Charles!

Baby you don't want to meet anyone in Katinal City. Matter of fact you don't want to find a reason to get to Katinal City. Only the strongest survive. I enjoyed this science fiction novel and sci-fi is not my genre. Steady pace-suspenseful and fully entertaining.

This book was surprisingly good! Action packed and complicated relationships. Different from what I usually read but I look forward to the next book in the trilogy.

This book was a fast read, well written, with a different spin on the world and how if functions. It is part of a trilogy and I am considering if I will complete the series. I am curious about the characters and the story line, but this book was just to dark for my taste, so painfully dark with no real positive characters. Even the characters in the book who would normally be good were cruel, with alternative motives. Really makes you think.

Fast-paced, complex, suspenseful story-line. “Today, the brave endures and cowards die alone!”
Enter Katingal City (K-City), rape and violence awaits you with no interceding staff. It’s hell on Earth. The British Government once held this building that they later abandoned to no repairs, antiquated systems, and vermiculated infestation. Katingal City once housed men who worked iron core and mines. Now it exits its worst criminals towards starvation, disease and murder.
Upon entering Katingal City there are a variety of criminals entering through a thick glass tube of fifty yard to a matching circular door that shuts with a suckling sound and is sealed. If you miss the entry way, there is a passage way that serves two purposes the portal to K-City with forty-five second to exit (prisoners and staff) which serves as a gas chamber. Fail or refuse to cross the entryway and you will be confined. There is one way in and one way out.

This storyline is based on two of Katingal Cities notorious citizens along with “Kristoff” a brute who runs K-City with the admission of the Warden who is to instill the most heinous crimes on the newly arrived celebrities and anyone he deems to be a loser.

Charles Gravo a notorious leader of a human trafficking network of a half million children that endures limitless pain as a prisoner of war for his atrocities.

Elaina Souza wife of Carlos Souza kills her husband’s pregnant mistress. Come ride on this storyline of abuse; kill or be killed as a theme. This was a hard read but a good one. I gave this storyline a 4.50 for an excellent storyline.
