“The Smokeless Fire” part 1! Constantine once heard a ghost story in a Parisian bar, and maybe the old man wasn’t just telling tales. So he takes Mercury in search of the only man he knows who’s encountered the Djinn. Problem is, they’re not the only people looking!
Simon Oliver was hatched in South London in 1969. Since that date he has consistently strived for mediocrity in a number of fields of employment, from cooking at the legendary Hacienda Club of Manchester in the late 1980's, scuba diving instructor in the planet's more tropical climes, to a career as a camera assistant in Hollywood. With such a spotty and heterogeneous employment record is seemed only fitting that the comic book would industry welcome him with open arms in 2005 for his writing debut in THE EXTERMINATORS.
Wow, OK... Now this one is full of surprises. Even the cover. For those, who didn't get it, it's is a reference to the legendary cover of 1911 novel Fantômas. Which started one of the biggest and famous French crime fiction series. All that makes sense thanks to how this issue takes place in Paris. And that's where Philip Tan comes in. I must say... his artwork here doesn't fit the main Hellblazer mood. At all. But since this issue is kind of special, I can't help but love it. Strange and unique art by Philip Tan and Elmer Santos' colors create some sort of magic here. You can feelParis here. You can smell the magic. Weird, different, but absolutely brilliant issue.
