After Tony is cleared from the attempt by Chip to frame him for murder, his life takes an unexpected turn. The FBI discovers that Tony DiNozzo is the missing son of Patrick Sheppard — kidnapped from the hospital shortly after his birth.
Pretty much my lead in to Stargate fanfiction when I found it by accident despite knowing the show before. It blends the world's of NCIS and Stargate exceptionally well and makes the characters feel like people. The fun of it is having a detective (Tony) deal with adapting to the new and crazy world around him while also learning to get along with his newfound family.
I decided to round up on reread (I'd left the stars blank before). Tony-centric; basically gen with background McShep. Seeing Tony trying to adjust to having multiple people who actually care and worry about him is heart-aching but good.
Gibbs supports him, and clues in to the ways he hasn't been doing that as much as he should. Ziva is terrible toward him (when attempted come-ons don't work) and Abby is sadly a brat. Senior faces consequences (after a revealing conversation Tony painfully leads him into), and should just be glad Patrick et al are going to let legal processes play out.
These Sheppards have all been read into the Stargate secret, and the SGC offers Tony another possibility or two to consider when the media frenzy over his true identity makes his usual work impossible at least for the moment.
Patrick, David, Matt (a shared-OC younger Sheppard brother), and (when he returns, the last to hear the news) John all have to try to get a handle on their reactive overprotectiveness of just-regained trouble-magnet-but-trained-agent Tony|Alex — which gives John uncomfortable insight into what his father was feeling when John wanted to join the military.
At essentially the same time, they also have to work through the mix of feelings, including tension and regrets on both sides, over John's own safe return after his estranged departure for another *galaxy*.
All the characters and interactions are well-drawn, and the ending is warm and hopeful. The only thing I found a bit implausible is that ordinary baby-thieves wouldn't have known to avoid the *Sheppard* baby.
N.b., if you're interested in this story, be aware that there's a Rough Trade "Project File" currently set up for the 25K sequel, _When Found, Show No Mercy_, https://www.roughtrade.org/project-fi... , though the story itself has not yet been posted. RT hosts unpolished, unPDFable works that get cleared generally about a month before the next writing-challenge event goes active, i.e., on October 1 in this case. (I actually goofed 7/10/'25, and got disappointed: I didn't realize the WF,SNM "Project File" didn't have any narrative available to read yet. 😢)
