McCabe County

Rate this book
A McCabe novel set in today's world. Rick McCabe, descendant of the legendary gunfighter Johnny McCabe, is sheriff of the county that bears his family's name. When a woman is kidnapped and her husband is murdered, all clues point to a family of sadistic, violent survivalists in an adjoining county. Meanwhile, a sniper is taking shots at Rick, and there might be connections to his former military career in black ops. Rick has to handle both situations, despite a system that seems rigged against him. How far is he willing to go to find the kidnapped woman, and keep the citizens of his county safe?

About the author

Brad Dennison

Brad was born in rural New England and grew up reading Louis L'Amour, Luke Short, A.B Guthrie, Jr., and even Edgar Rice Burroughs. He knew at 14 he wanted to write for a living, and refused to give up the goal even when the odds seemed overwhelmingly against it. Now, thanks to Amazon, his stories are now available. He is a member of the Western Writers of America

Brad fell in love with the Old West at a very young age. It began with movies and old TV series like GUNSMOKE and BONANZA, and later expanded to western novels. This led to his study of western history. The pioneers, the Indians, the cattlemen, the gunfighters. His interest in history is not so much about wars and great leaders, but the people who lived on the land. And that's what he writes about. The people. He doesn't write about the old west as much as he writes about what it might have felt like to be there.

He loves contact from readers. He can be reached by email at mccabewesterns@gmail.com if you want to discuss his stories, or even just the American West in general.

This is a different Brad Dennison western in that it is set in today's world. Rick McCade is the great-grandson of Dusty McCade, and is the sheriff of McCade County, living in the home that Johnny McCade built in the 1860's. The McCades have come down in prosperity in the 140 years since Johnny's time. Johnny owned a big ranch, that covered about all of McCade County, but Rick is a poorly paid lawman who has to pinch pennies. Rick is a former Special Forces op who has killed for his country, but he is not the only one in the seemingly sleepy little town who has ties to the cloak and dagger world of secret murder for country. This western has a James Bondish feel where secret agents of the government have a "license to kill" enemies of the state. In traditional westerns, gunfights occur without consequences for the survivors (ie, no coroner's inquest or murder charges as would happen in real life), and one is able to suspend belief in that it was a long time ago. But it is harder for me to take the killings of an outlaw family seriously that Rick wouldn't be in serious trouble in the world of 2018.

Very enjoyable

Was not sure what to expect when I found out this was a modern day story. I have read all the old west books about the family. It turned out I liked this book a lot. Hope you do too.

Good read, twisted.

I enjoyed this story and its interlacing of the past. I had some difficulty with characters actions. But good triumphed over evil. Are we really justified in doing evil to achieve good? This is something we have to decide in our own moral compass!

Loved it!!!

Good story line. Good development of characters. Kept my interest to the end. Most of all I did not have to plug through a bunch of filth to get to the story.
Thanks

McCabe men are similar

The saga continues with a twist thought I had read all this series but this one seems to tell me I have missed at least one and gives me the impression there is definitely more to come.

A modern Zane Grey

In the 1940's as a youth before e-books and tv, I read westerns, this bought back fond memories. A good one.
