This is a different Brad Dennison western in that it is set in today's world. Rick McCade is the great-grandson of Dusty McCade, and is the sheriff of McCade County, living in the home that Johnny McCade built in the 1860's. The McCades have come down in prosperity in the 140 years since Johnny's time. Johnny owned a big ranch, that covered about all of McCade County, but Rick is a poorly paid lawman who has to pinch pennies. Rick is a former Special Forces op who has killed for his country, but he is not the only one in the seemingly sleepy little town who has ties to the cloak and dagger world of secret murder for country. This western has a James Bondish feel where secret agents of the government have a "license to kill" enemies of the state. In traditional westerns, gunfights occur without consequences for the survivors (ie, no coroner's inquest or murder charges as would happen in real life), and one is able to suspend belief in that it was a long time ago. But it is harder for me to take the killings of an outlaw family seriously that Rick wouldn't be in serious trouble in the world of 2018.
