Clive Yates has been a single father for the past five years, raising his young kids on his own after their mother abandoned them. But his whole world is shattered the moment they’re taken, and the police inform him the M.O. resembles that of a long-dormant serial killer of children. The dangerous forest outside of Midsummer is massive, and with no idea where to search, he fears his kids might not be found in time. But there is one person who has seen the killer’s face, a girl who escaped with her brother so many years ago.
She survived what no child should ever suffer…
Fifteen years ago, Greta Weaver and her foster brother were abducted and brought to a cabin of horrors deep in the forest. They escaped, but just barely, both with scars that have made growing up difficult. She’s tried to make a life for herself outside her childhood town, though nightmares plague her sleep and she’s kept herself isolated. Her abductor—almost killer—was never caught, and part of her always remained lost in those woods, afraid of what would happen if he found her.
When Clive comes to her for help, she just wants to hide from the world, but can’t bear the thought of seeing a parent lose his children. She’ll have to confront her fears–and her past–if Clive is ever going to see his kids again.
Asha King likes good-looking men and hot books, and often strives to combine the two in contemporary, paranormal, and suspenseful romantic stories. Lost retells the story of Hansel and Gretel with a few tweaks. This is a very dark story that centers around two kids kidnapped by a serial killer that has recently become active again. Many years before, two children in particular escaped this madman. The father seeks the help of the female victim after the case has been stalled for lack of evidence. Though initially reluctant, she agrees and tries to recall details from that long ago kidnapping nightmare. The mystery of where and who took the children kept me on the edge of my seat. This book is a part of Asha King's retelling of popular fairy tales.
This Midsummer Suspense tale is a bit darker than what has been previously written. That being said, there are aspects touched on that some may not be comfortable with reading. But all in all I loved it! The criminal profiler in me was all over it trying to solve the mystery. Greta Weaver and her foster brother have been the only to victims to survive the terrible evil of a predator, who takes his young captives and subjects them to every parent's worse nightmare. And after fifteen years, a new set of victims goes missing and Clive needs Greta's help in finding his children before their timeframe runs out. And there is no trail of breadcrumbs left behind for our heroes to follow.
This was so full of suspense, it will have you jumping at shadows and falling into the unique connection Clive and Greta form in this tragic situation. They lean on each other when their emotions run high and adrenaline runs low. This book didn't occasionally give the warm fuzzies I've come to expect from King, but the comforting moments between Greta and Clive seemed to solidify their relationship, rather than having two strangers being attracted to each other. It was a good read with a satisfying ending to a very scary fairytale.
Wow.... this edgy, compelling and to the point read captivated me from the start and kept me entertained throughout, with twist and turns, heart pounding moments that keeps you guessing - what next.
A classy intriguing and well developed story with an amazing cast of characters who blend together beautifully. The author paid meticulous attention to each characters personality that I felt I knew them personally. Well edited and written. A great thought provoking suspense with realistic writing style for a profound story, and being the wordsmith she is this aurhor, does not let the reader feel awkward but want to continue.
I have absolutely no hesitation what so ever in reccomending this novel. A MUST read. Thank you again AK 😁
