Rijks Masters of the Golden Age maintains a conversation between Dutch seventeenth-century masterpieces and their viewers today. For me the chief pleasure is the quality and number of the reproductions: each painting in the selection is displayed in full, as well as in several close-up details that fill these large pages. To take as an example Rembrandt's The Jewish Bride, the golden and vermilion fabrics appear, in the close-up details, to be composed of scales and knots of paint. You can almost convince yourself that each fresh loading of the brush can be determined.

The book itself is unmistakably lavish, with gilt pages. It is large and heavy - ideally it should rest on a table or the reader would soon become uncomfortable holding it. Admirers of innovative calligraphy will appreciate the titles, which are lettered with pen or brush.

Rijks, Masters of the Golden Age is a wonderful art book that depicts various works of Dutch Masters from the collection of the Rijksmuseum, along with commentary by contemporary artists, writers, designers and other people from the art world.
The commentaries are insightful, offering historical titbits, interpretations and the meanings of these paintings in their personal and professional lives.
This book, even though it is 'only' the widely available unlimited edition, is beautifully crafted. Artful calligraphy in various styles is interspersed with the paintings, offering meaningful quotes from the commentaries. And I loved the little detail of the three ribbons in red white and blue!

I absolutely loved it, it made me want to visit the Rijksmuseum again. An inspiration.

This is so lovely, very nice paintings, a true work of art.
The paintings are spoken about by non- experts so it's as if you're just speaking about the painting in the Rijksmuseum.
The paintings are photographed extremely well and zoomed in upon in a way you can't in the museum itself (for obvious reasons).
I liked it very much!

A sumptuous, beautiful celebration of creative book design ... dedicated to the Dutch masterpieces of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam ... with meditations on individual paintings by various design professionals rather than the obligatory art historians ... a cultural artifact and visual delight ...
