“How?” She swipes at a few stray tears. “How do you . . . not let it break you?” “You look it straight in the black, evil eyes and tell it to f-ck off. You tell it you won’t be broken so easily. And you get up and keep moving. It’s what I’ve done my whole life, with everything. Whatever it is, you let it make you stronger, okay? Because the alternative road is an even darker one, I promise.” Twenty-year-old orphan, Grace Vincent, is damaged beyond repair. She’s had a shit life, and with the state of the world, things aren’t getting any better. With crime on the constant rise, and all licensed civilians age sixteen and up armed, it’s no wonder she has a pet name for her 9 mm, Suki. While attending the slummiest community college in Selam, Texas, Grace still lives at home with her adoptive parents and their “miracle” baby, but only for a few more months until she graduates and they buy her a new car. She smokes and drinks a little too much, loses herself in her music, and to keep things interesting, she’s falling hard for her cute and sexy best friend, Eve. (Who knew she liked girls?) But when the government imposes Martial Law, requiring civilians aged twenty-one and up to be vaccinated in an effort to eradicate violence, and things don’t go as planned, Grace is left to navigate a frenzied world while wrangling difficult realizations and regrets. With nothing else to lose, a decision must be made—fight and live, or surrender and die. When Grace has lost all hope, two chance encounters prove there are secrets in Selam, Texas, lies about how the end happened, and hope for her yet, despite the insanity in her screwed-up mind. The world may have ended, but Grace’s new life has just begun. “You can’t break someone who’s already broken. This, I know to be true.”
*Content Advisory/Trigger Warning/Notes* Dysphoria and Grace/The Night Blind Saga is a dark apocalyptic romance series with some very steamy, sometimes rather dark F/F scenes, M/F scenes, and other mixes (later books in series). In these books you will find a buffet of language, gore, drug use, violence, assault/abuse, and a bunch of other stuff that could scar you for life. If you’re not willing to take that risk, please read ‘safer’ books. If you don’t ingest your literature occasionally (or often) on the edge, gritty, in the dark, and/or possibly in a random stairwell, this series may not be right for you. *Recommended for readers 18+ *Not recommended for those with PTSD (though the main character herself suffers from PTSD, so... your call) *Guaranteed HEA, no cliffhanger.
Christina L. Rozelle is the author of the bestselling YA Dystopian Scifi series, The Treemakers Trilogy, which includes her groundbreaking debut, “The Treemakers,” and its sequels, “The Soultakers,” and “The Seeker’s Keys.” Hailed for its strong, believable, and relatable characters, original and complex plotting, and phenomenal world-building, The Treemakers Trilogy appeals to lovers of dystopian literature who are looking for something refreshing and new.
Rozelle’s writing roots sprouted with poetry and prose in countless journals in her early years, continuing through her tumultuous teenage years, and well into her turbulent young adult life. Though her younger self dreamed of scribing non-fiction and poetry someday, when she discovered the magic in creating fiction she never looked back. Overcoming countless obstacles of her own, the wisdom gained along her personal path through healing breathes life into her beautifully dark, yet hopeful tales of triumph. Filled with an array of emotional triggers, not many topics are off limits in her works. Rozelle’s exceptional storytelling dives deep into the survival and growth journeys of diverse, broken characters and unlikely heroes. Authentic, gritty, intricate, and wildly imaginative, her stories also offer hope—a light in the dark—as her characters discover their own inner strengths and worth in the midst of debilitating adversity.
Though her wanderlust calls her to a nomadic life of traveling the world in planes, trains, ships, and RVs, Christina happily resides in a small town in Colorado, USA, with her children.
I received an early copy in exchange for a honest review. I'm going to be honest I begged for an early copy. Apparently I give really good puppy dog eyes because I got it. If you can't tell I'm doing the Snoopy dance.
I was thrilled to get a chance to read it. It captured by attention last night and I couldn't put it down. I fell asleep super late last night reading it and woke up early to try and get more in. I loved the characters and the story line. It was dark, sexy, terrifying, forgiving, heart breaking, funny, and full of secrets. It is a interesting take on zombies but it touches on some heavy subjects. I'm taking super heavy subjects. It was relieving that an author had to the guts to talk about most of the subjects. It is brave and I believe done well. I loved how the writing flowed and how nicely the characters seemed to evolve. I'm desperately looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
My favorite character is Grace. Grace is a beautiful who emerged towards the end of the book from Ophelia (the caterpillar). Both were strong characters but I feel that Grace is the one that I could relate to and I enjoyed watching her emerge. I had a feeling that she was always in there just wanting to be released. The funniest thing that was said was by Ophelia "Though I hate this school with the burning fire of chlamydia". I literally snorted when I read this. If there was liquid in my mouth it would have been all over the place.
My favorite moment was when Grace emerged on top of the water slide. It was a tender moment and a moment of rebirth. There were so many moments that were my favorite so it was hard to determine which one I liked the best. I also don't want to share too many because I hate spoilers. My heart was shattered in to several pieces by the words but I couldn't stop reading.
Overall, I was impressed with the writing and the story. It was fast paced and a fascinating take on zombies and friendship. I look forward to reading the rest of the series because I feel this has the potential to be a huge hit. Thank you for the early copy.
Holy wow! I was not expecting a story like what I just read! I've taken a week or two to write this review because this is one of those books that will leave you shell shocked and in awe. Usually you can kind of predict where a story is heading and who is going to make it to the end, especially in a zombie thriller. That is most definitely not the case with this one! This is not for the faint of heart, yes, you've now been warned. It is gritty, real, and powerful in ways that I've never seen other authors accomplish. Rozelle's soul has been intertwined with the words on each page, which adds a dimension that cannot be manufactured any other way. I'm hoping to recover enough to read the second one by the time it comes out because this one is that mind-blowing.
Ms. Rozelle has done it again! I loved every minute, and I need more!
At first I was a bit skeptical. Not of the story, but it was a bit too real for me. I read mostly to escape reality, and here it is right in front of me. But the story is too good to put down! So I set aside my feelings, and concentrated on it. If I didn't need sleep, I would have devoured it in one sitting! I may have teared up in some parts, ok, I cried! Denial, love, loss, happiness, they're all in here. A great read if you ask me!
I was lucky enough to beta read this book in the early stages. I loved the fierce character of Ophelia/Grace, and the edgy world she lives in. It’s not a book for the faint of heart. The setting is harsh, and Grace isn’t a do-gooder by any means. But her character has such amazing spirit and heart. In spite of the unbelievably heartbreaking tragedies she has to deal with, she has an amazing character arc as she finds her strength and learns what’s truly important. All this is done over a backdrop of a completely bone chilling story about zombies and a government virus that leave you questioning the who’s and why’s, as well as who Grace can trust, until the very end. It’s my favorite kind of ending, where the main story is wrapped up but there are still a lot of places to explore. I’m looking forward to the next in the series.
This book had been given to me in exchange for an honest review. I agreed to read and review it without an aid of a blurb mainly because it had been written by Christina Rozelle and I had enjoyed her previous work immensely. I looked at the cover of this one and said “Cool, a zombie book. This should be good.”
That had been my mistake. Mistake not because I agreed to read a Rozelle book but mistake because I didn’t read the blurb and completely missed all the warnings attached to it. For this book is very dark. Very well written but contains very dark and mature content. I don’t read dark contents as a rule.
Having said that, I read this one in 2 sittings, would have been at one go if I timed it correctly. It is a fast read and disturbingly compelling.
We meet Grace. She’s 19, adopted by a loving couple when she was younger, now a college student, rebellious, does drugs, shoplifts, carries firearms, practices witchcraft and generally fed up with her life. She’s the symbol of the word “dysphoria” which is the opposite of euphoria. She changed her name to Ophelia when she started her craft.
She also has a best friend named Lucy who changed her name to Eve for the craft. Together, we follow them in a New America where crime is so rife that the government forced a mandate for over 21s to submit to “mood” controlling injections as a last attempt to solve the uncontrollable problem.
This is difficult for me to review since it’s not usually a genre I follow. The writing, as always with a Rozelle book, is impeccable. No errors that I saw. The pacing of the story is good. The characters had been described in detail and true to their purpose in the story.
Should I split this story into sections: as a horror story, it’s quite good. The transition from normal people into infected had been described very well and timely from inoculation to signs and symptoms until full-blown infection. The gore as expected from zombie books had been tastefully done (pun intended). The adrenaline inducing scenes very well executed.
As an erotica, there were moments where I had to take my hat off to Miss Rozelle for moving on to new adult from her previous work so seamlessly. The erotic scenes were well-written and even romanticised enough to pull at the heart strings.
As a dark material, the drug use had been described to perfection that could only be attributed to personal experience or out of this world researching skills. The sexual abuse thrown in thankfully had been elegantly implied rather than explicit in nature.
Had I known the content prior to reading, I would have prepared myself mentally and emotionally to the onslaught brought by the story and maybe I would have appreciated it a bit more. But that’s entirely my fault and not of the author since she had specifically added warnings to the blurb.
I’m awarding 4 stars to the book itself for what it stood for even though I derived no pleasure in reading it. This is just not for me but would be a great read for those who follow this genre.
This is an heart wrenching, complex, totally absorbing tale that touches on subjects that many authors avoid. It has secrets and twists, is terrifying but also has humour and tenderness. Defiantly an adult read, in it's a lay-it-all-out-there, raw, gritty, emotion filled tale that takes your breath away. The author's unique take on a zombie thriller and its convoluted characters, makes this dark story an unforgettable, captivating read that leaves you shell shocked and dying for more.
“You can’t break someone who’s already broken. This, I know to be true.” There are advisory and trigger warnings for a very good reason, including the PTSD warning, though if you think you can you should read this book. It is hard hitting, heartbreaking and pulls absolutely no punches, but it is also an amazing story that shows where inner strength and love can get you. I was left a sobbing mess at the end of this book so will I read book 2 when it's here? 100% yes because it is such a powerful story and Grace is flawed and broken yet gives hope that even the destroyed can be made whole.
This book is absolutely amazing! Intense and not for the faint of heart. This story is real, I mean horrifyingly realistic. It's gritty, raw, hardcore, erotic, disturbing, sad, heart wrenchingly devastating! Imagine the worst possible thing you could imagine happening, and this is probably worse. And that is part of what makes this story so amazing! As you read it, you believe it! You feel Ophelia's pain! You understand it, you may not have lived her life, but you are able to understand what she is feeling and why. There is a little bit of us all in her! She is one hell of a main character! I have pages of notes on my thoughts of the things that happen in this book, and have been pondering for a few days now how to write this review. But I think what I have already said is enough. You just need to read it, go into it with an open mind knowing there might be something in here that is hard for you to read, because this is not a romantic end of the world zombie story LOL oh no, but there is some pretty hot sex... so you do a get a bit of romance I guess. All in all, this is my new favorite series that has me hanging on the edge of my seat waiting for the next book. Left me in a hangover that had me jotting down thoughts and notes for 3 days after finishing. So I say to you, just read it!
I found it very difficult to get into this book. Felt that the characters were initially difficult to relate to and the storyline was confusing. For me, it wasn't until Chapter 15 that it all started to tie in and become interesting. I have given this book a 3/5 star rating simply because it took me so long to become invested in the story. If you are like me, persevere!!! The last half of the book has lots of drama and action and it leaves it at a point where you just want to know what happens next.
The energy in this apocalyptic story grabs you and holds on tight. Our main character is not your usual shining star who does everything good and right. She has a heart but is afraid to let it out for fear of being hurt. This story shows you some of the dark side of human nature so be warned that this might not be for everyone. Sadly tragic and truthful yet makes for a fantastic read. Well written and makes you think long after turning the last page.
I won a print copy of dysphoria and Grace by Chistina Rozelle in a Goodreads Giveaway.
It took me a while to like this book. Although I like apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic/dystopian stories, this one bordered on being too far over the top for me. I couldn't relate to the characters. As the cover says, "You can't break someone who's already broken" and Grace, the lead character, is well beyond "broken". Granted, the government is dystopian in spades, but Grace starts out offering little to find endearing to the reader. She absolutely and unapologetically revels in her brokenness.
Very graphic scenes of drug use, sexuality, and rape. Very, very dark. When we start to think things may be improving for Grace; BAM! Slapped down again. No secret that as a reader I was waiting for the "redemptive" portion of the story. Mini spoiler; it does not come in the I was expecting. I believe this is the first installment of a series so perhaps in forthcoming books it will be more of a comfortable read for me. Perhaps that is the crux of my review, dysphoria and Grace is not a comfortable read. As we all know, an uncomfortable read does not equate to a bad read. So, be prepared to leave your reading comfort zone. Enjoy!
Wow, this was one crazy story but very well written! New America is requiring those of the age 21 and over to get a shot that suppresses a gene for one to fight and be evil. The only ones that are exempt are the ones of the law that would supposedly protect us. Ophelia (Grace) was adopted and hates the parents that adopted her, she turns to drugs and alcohol and falls for her best friend Eve (Lucy). But high on acid one night, did they really witness a massacre or were they just hallucinating from the acid. And to top that off, the shot that was given out seems to have some weird side affects. Will Ophelia and Eve make it out of this before things go from bad to worse? Can't wait to read the next book in this series!
Wow! Christina L. Roselle is a newish to me author and I'm so glad that I stumbled across her. She is now a new favorite of mine. Fantastic writing skills!
I didn't know what to except when I started reading Dysphoria and Grace (I rarely read previews). This story is so well-written, gritty, dark, witty and emotional. The authors touched places that like to be kept in the dark. In-depth character development and world building.
Grace/Ophelia is such a strong but damaged character. And in spite of/ or maybe due to all she's been through, her character evolves. Her journey to self-realization is torturous and I was crying along with her for her losses and her regret. I really am anxious to see where the next book takes both her and I.
This is not a read for the faint hearted. It's tough and gritty, rough and raw and filled with emotional triggers, but damn is it all the better for it. One of the more interesting reads that I've read of late.
Although there is adult and possibly triggering content, this is an amazing read. To watch the growth of the main character outshines any survivor story I have ever read. So ready to follow her on the next leg of her journey.
I read this and at first I didn't like it, but it got better. The writing is good. The drug use was very disconcerting. As was the sexual abuse. Could have been great, but wasn't. Happy Reading!!! Tim
I absolutely loved this apocalyptic tale. Such a gripping tale of coming of age and a struggle to survive the end of the as you know it. Don't miss it.
What a gripping book this is!!! It is very well written and the characters are very rounded. There is a lot of emotions in this book and I went through them all with the main character Grace. It just was that believable. Scared, I think was my main emotion lol but it had me reading more to find out what happens next. Never a dull moment. A deserved 5 star review
Ms. Rozelle is one of my favorite authors, so when I was offered a chance to read this book early for a review-I jumped on it!! Normally I am a YA girl but I have to say this is a well written NA book. The content is deep and disturbing at times but shows the raw honesty of a character who had been through some unimaginable circumstances and is trying to figure out who she is and how she fits in the world. Throw in this fantasy world where zombies have been made-makes for a story you can't stop reading!!! I love dystopian genre and not normally a zombie person but the way these zombies are created makes you wonder if something like this could really happen! Of course I'm always a sucker for a love story! I can't wait to see where the story leads in the next book!!
Dysphoria & Grace By Christine Rozelle 3/28/2017 I will start off stating this is not my normal type of read, I am not a big fan of romance or erotica. The Author was responsible in rating the book as NA,(Mature content would be a good label for it.) there is also a mature content warning in the description. The Government had mandated that everyone 21 and older get vaccinated. With the exception of a few groups like Military personnel, Police officers ect. The vaccination was supposed to eliminate crime. There was going to be a 1,000 dollar fine per day for those who refused. Those who wait for longer than two weeks to get vaccinated after the 21st birthday would be punished severely. The main character’s are Grace Vincent 20yrs old (Ophilia) she is fighting some major inner demons and is filled with regret Her friend Lucy Davisson 19yrs old (Eve)Her parents didn’t think Grace was a good influence on her. She didn’t like guns so she never got her permit till she was 18 when most everyone else got their’s at age 16. Gideon Tyler 27 yrs old. He seemed like a nice guy. You would never guess the lengths he would go to to save a friend.
The characters were flawed and well written, Mrs. Rozelle paints a good image of the background where the story takes place and there is plenty of conflict in this story. One of the supporting characters I really liked was Murray, he was an older man doing the right thing in a deprived world the second book in this series will be more of his story I believe. There is a sneak peek at the end of this book for book 2.
For the most part I enjoyed the book. It's not a typical book I would read, but I was given the opportunity to read it before it was released. I'm not into the 'undead' that is the latest craze but the book was well written. I wish there was more of an explanation as to why the outbreak took place and Grace's vision. Maybe in the next book...
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
What a trip!! Going in blindly with this book was the way to go. No expectations, and absolutely no idea what the book was about. There is so much going on in this book. America is no longer as we know it....it is New America. Where there are weapons classes in high school and talks of mandatory vaccines to reduce crime. This book has drugs, sex, guns, zombies, and witchcraft. I don't want to give anything away. Just go in with an open mind....and let the book take you where it will. I enjoyed this book, and will definitely be checking out the next book!
WOW!!!! This is not even close to the type of book that I would normally read, however thanks to the Quirky Blind Date I was lucky enough to find this book. Christina's writing was wonderful and so descriptive I found myself being able to see the book play out in my mind as I was reading. Not an easy read by any means and please pay attention to the trigger warnings as I would see this being very hard for some people to read. I loved the strength yet vulnerability in Grace/Ophelia and how she does things even she doesn't think that she is capable of. I can't wait to read the continuation of this story and see how everything unfolds. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
I was very pleasantly surprised by this book. I went into it blind.. having not read the summary or anything. The book was most definitely not even something I would typically read! It follows Ophelia (Grace by birth) and her life. Her not so great life according to her. Some crazy things happen causing even crazier things to happen. I still don't know what the summary says so I don't want to give anything away! There is a cliffhanger.. so beware!
This book was extremely intense! Heartbreaking and lovely and rough around the edges. Be warned, as the author herself admits, this story is full of triggers. You may not love it as much as I did, but in a dystopian tomorrow I believed in Grace. I tripped with her. I loved with her. I also cried with her. And Evie/Lucy and Gideon helped make Grace whole, or as whole as she could be at this point. Now to wait patiently for book 2.
Loved this book, not your normal zombie read. I loved following grace though her journey and watching her battle her demons, and being able to overcome the mental struggles even in a dead world there's still hope.
i didnt love this book. i found it hard to follow as i kept thinking i was missing parts of the story, it would jump without any connection made. i did enjoy the overall plot and thought it was a refreshing spin on the undead.
