Currently writing and publishing a series entitled The Big Sleep. The first installment, The Big Sleep: Dreamwalkers, will be released for free on April 1, 2017. I'm excited to connect with readers and writers alike. Let's chat!
The Big Sleep: Dreamwalkers was an interesting story with a very original premise. It interweaves elements of science fiction, interdimensional travel and alternate nightmare universes seamlessly into its plot, and the novel itself was comparatively short which made for a quick, fast read.
I think Meaghan Gray did an amazing job of world-building, with a clear touch of creativity shown in her writing. She does not leave loose ends untied and everything is a puzzle piece that fits into the story. The Greymen, especially, were my favorite thing about this book and I was rather intrigued by them. Her ideas have a lot of potential and I'm very excited to see what will happen in the sequel.
That being said, I didn't understand some of the things going on in the book. It was too fast-paced at times and especially at the beginning, some of the chapter transitions were very confusing. I did like the plot twist right at the end, even though I really had no idea what was going on but I have to admit it makes for a decent cliffhanger. I'd recommend this book to lovers of science fiction and those who want a fast, light read. The Big Sleep: Dreamwalkers falls into the YA category without having any of the tropes related to that genre, which is what gives it an authentic twist.
It was good, and the part with the nightmares' aliens was really good taken the amateurish writing. Afterward, it became a lot YA-ish, and reading from my phone is not so fun. So, DNF. That being said, it wasn't the book, it was me. It's a cool book which is worth checking out.
As a fan of sci-fi, I enjoyed this quick read. Although some parts of the writing were confusing and the execution did not make sense to me at times, I was immersed with the whole concept and thus, pushing my rating to a 3.5/5.
I very nearly passed this one by but now that I’ve finished it I’m glad that I didn’t. I say I almost passed it by because the way the opening chapters are written didn’t appeal to me. The quick chopping and jumping around between dreams was off-putting, but I skipped past them to where the real story starts. The opening is basically prologue and, thinking back on it now, could be dropped all together.
I get that we need to know the origins of what is happening, but I think it could be worked into the story much easier than how this book opens. Not all styles appeal to all people of course, so you might be different, but I found it difficult.
That said, once the real story starts just before the second Big Sleep, the plot takes off at a fast clip and barely slows down. It was this that kept me reading and why ultimately I enjoyed the book, even if I didn’t like the opening.
Mostly set inside the dream world, Ms Gray does an excellent job of keeping believability alive while injecting plenty of fantasy elements that could only be conjured up in a dream. The concept of the Greymen and the world they inhabit and what they do was a new one for me and were one of the things that piqued my curiosity about this novel in the first place.
A nice fat twist towards the end of the novel makes me want to read the next one, so I’ll be keeping my eyes open for the next book in this series.
The only other notes I made while reading this was I wasn’t sure how the cover fitted the book. It wasn’t a turnoff, I just had a hard time reconciling the cover with the storyline of the book. Yes, it starts with a space adventure but the rest of the book mostly inside a shared dream. Maybe I'm over-thinking it.
Tl;DR Ultimately, I really enjoyed this book, even if I wasn’t a fan of the opening.
I did enjoy The Big Sleep. It is a quick and refreshing sci-fi read with a great premise.
I very much appreciated that we got to see a strong set of characters. There were great friendships and I much enjoyed the Collins' family dynamic. It was great to see how well our characters worked together and interacted with each other. I also really liked the idea of the Greymen and I was very intrigued by the world that was presented to us. I found it to be very original, full of potential and I'm excited to explore it in the next book. One thing I really loved is the turn the story took towards the end of the book and it made me very excited to see where we'll go from here.
The reason why I gave this novel 2 stars instead of 3 stars is how a 'situation' later on in the book was handled. I do understand why it had to happen but I don't like how the whole thing was executed. Moreover, I like my books to be longer-ish, especially with sci-fi. In general, I thought this novel lacked a bit in descriptions. I do hope that we get to explore the world and the characters further in the next instalment as I did quite enjoy the bits and pieces we got to see of both in this book.
If you are looking for a fun, fast-paced book full of action with an original plot I would definitely recommend you The Big Sleep.
