In a fiery tale filled with villains and heroes, this first installment of the Earth Angel series by B.C. Burgess takes readers on a magical journey rich with emotion, intrigue, and danger. Fans of Twilight, The Red Queen, The Selection, and Harry Potter will devour this breathless fantasy set in a modern mystical world.
It all starts with a letter . . . Eighteen-year-old Layla Callaway doesn’t believe in magic or soul mates. And if angels were real, her mother would still be alive. But her mom’s dead and a surprise inheritance is about to change everything.
The Earth Angel series is a young adult adaptation of The Mystic Series by B.C. Burgess.
B.C. Burgess was born and raised in a small town in Oklahoma, fishing from muddy lakes and running barefoot down hot tar roads to climb trees with her friends. Though her roots run deep in the blue-collar neighborhoods of the Midwest, her head stays in the clouds, dreaming of her next adventure. She’s on a mission to travel the world, but when she’s home, she’s an emotional support human to her rescue dog Junebug. She loves her son, her family and her friends, but coffee is her soulmate. B.C. spent nearly two decades submerged in the world of fantasy, creating the magical tapestry of the Mystic Series, and she now looks forward to sharing the journey with you.

This was an okay read. I really liked the whole concept and the way Burgess uses one of the characters to explain everything. That way we find out more along with the main character.
BUT.
This novella-type book felt like an introduction. It got cut off at the exact moment I felt lost in the story and I hate when that happens. On top of that (although that part is the one I hate most), there are some things overly described. Felt unnecessary in a way since some events didn't add anything to the story - and it's a short one as it is so I feel like every event should have some importance right?
I don't think I'll pick up the sequel simply because I have this feeling it'll have another frustrating ending. (The book titles confirmed that feeling, ugh.)
I had been wanting to read the Mystic Series for quite some time but for one reason or another something always interfered (a new book, timing, etc.) When I found out that she redid all of the books but as a Young Adult series I was intrigued. Would that be a good thing or bad? So many people loved this series and the chemistry that existed between the characters. Could you keep the chemistry while dialing back the heat?
From the moment I picked up the book and stated reading I was engaged. However, it wasn’t until the “Letter” showed up that I couldn’t physically put the book down. I had to follow Layla’s adventures and discover where and how she would get there. Would she find the perfect cup of coffee? Who would she meet along her road trip? Most importantly, would she be able to solve the clues that were left behind for her?
B.C. Burgess nails it with this book! I am sure all of the little pieces of “bread” she leaves along the way are hints at bigger things to come and that excites to me. I am already reading the second book of the series because I need more Layla and Quin. This book is the perfect cross between the romance of Twilight and the magic of Harry Potter. If you are looking for something different…this is it!
Okay I am hooked. This is a short book so it is really fast and leaves you wanting more so now I cannot wait to continue this series. The book was a little slow to start for me but once we got into the story it really picks up and I cannot wait to find out more about the characters.
I’ve seen some really great reviews for this series. The concept and story would be great in the hands of a competent author. I was stoked to start reading about the witch raised in the hexless world finding her way back to her roots. But then I ran head first into some of the worst writing I’ve ever encountered.
Seriously, this is a young adult offering, but is the author a 13-year old girl? The constant repetition of scenes, dialog, and character descriptions was mind-blowing. All witches are apparently absolutely gorgeous, both male and female. The 2 main characters spend all their time gazing at each other and flirting outrageously, sneaking kisses and obsessing about her lips and his dimples. If he ran his thumb over her pout one more time I would have puked.
Did I mention the main character loves coffee? She talks about it on every page; how much she loves to drink it, how much it means to her that her man provides her with a fix on command, how amazing the coffee in the coven is. Again, is the author a teenager who’s just discovered Starbuck’s?
Our star struck teens can’t keep their hands off each other but refuse to consummate their attraction. Instead they go round and round in circles about how they would die for each other but that doesn’t mean they trust the other party. They sleep together every night but sex is not an option. Spare me the sizzling glances and steamy thoughts, are you going to go there or not?
I read the first 5 books in this series (that’s right, there are more than 5) and everything that’s happened so far should have taken less than one book to tell. I’d Ike to know what happens, but I don’t have the energy to devote to this. If anyone should actually soldier through to the end let me know , okay?
⭐️/⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 0/🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶 💕/💕💕💕💕💕 ✍️✍️/✍️✍️✍️✍️✍️ . . . Blurb: The Letter by B.C. Burgess is about Layla, who has recently lost her mother to a stroke and discovered that she has inherited a large sum mysteriously. Layla travels to Oregon to try to learn more about her inheritance and meets Quin, who Layla is instantly attracted to and who has all the answers she is seeking. . . . My review: I honestly don’t think I actually read 90% of the book and almost stopped at 50% with a DNF. While Burgess’s writing was easy enough to follow along, the story was simplistic and generally lacking, leaving me much to be desired - especially as major plot points were needlessly extended. I do think I would have enjoyed this when I was younger, though, and more of a sucker for instant romances and soulmates. . . A quote I think says it all: “Another change is their perception of each other. What was once beautiful becomes flawless, and it stays that way forever, no matter how much their looks change, no matter how much they change. They might disagree with each other on occasion, or accidentally hurt each other’s feelings, but their anger and betrayal won’t last long, because their intense love will quickly sweep it away.”
3.5/5 Very decent book, characters lacked emotions at time, too much dialogue in my opinion, however ending was extremely disappointing, I know it was supposed to be a cliffhanger, but it just didn't work, and just because I know something is there, doesn't mean it happened. The plot itself was extremely slow and it took a long time for the juicy bits to happen, I do know this is a part of a 11 book series, but I wish the antagonist was shown more, he was present in the first chapter and only for a couple pages. In fact, all he did in this book was state his intentions, however the world building is extremely nice and it's a very decent read.
I went into this book blind, which is a first for me. From the moment I started reading, I didn't put it down. I haven't had a book grab my attention like this in quite some time.
We start out with Layla coming to terms with the loss of her beloved mother and what she will do now that she's gone. After meeting with her mother's attorney, she reads the letter and quickly learns that not all is as it seems.
I was intrigued with Layla's story. I was as eager as she was to find out the mystery surrounding her past and her family. This book is filled with all the good stuff to keep you wanting more.
The Letter which is the first book in the Earth Angel series by B.C. Burgess is a very unique book. It draws you in and captivates you with intriguing characters and a great plot. I kept trying to put it down but I had to keep finding out what happened next. I can't wait to read he rest of the books in the series and see what happens next.
I liked it at first, but I wasn't able to read for a few days; when I came back to this book, I started to notice how goody, goody everything was. Each sentence was filled with words that described how great and perfect everything was. Everything was superficial like it would be happening in a dream, it just wasn't my type of book.
I liked the concept, was obviously a young adult book and not the best writing throughout, but I was intrigued. I will most likely continue this series because it ended at a major cliffhanger that I really liked.
Quite short, sweet story about a girl who loses her mother, learns that she is adopted and a witch and falls in love with a boy. It clearly is a beginning of something more. And yet, it didn't capture me to follow through with next books.

This is a good introduction though I agree with other who have noted that she goes along a bit to easy. Nothing freaks her out. She isn’t suspicious or even cautious of this guy who won’t leave her side. That’s not real. Going on to book 2
Unbelievable. Absolutely stunning, heart-warming, heartbreaking...all the emotions. So well written I fell into this world and read the book in just a couple hours. I'm in love with this author. Wow, just wow.
I love the series read all 19 of them twice but there is no ending after Book 19 there is no book 20 and they leave you hanging I would never read anything from this author again if that's the way she treats her readers
The story is intersting, but in this first part of the series Layla, the heroine is not one of my favourite. I will continue the series, maybe it changes my opinion.
I liked how well this book was written, it was extremely imaginative and profoundly deep in regards to the back rounds of the leading characters. Looking forward to reading book two.
This is a well written YA novel. I love Layla. She is such a strong female character. She doesn't let much ruffle her feathers. I love the story I am invested in the characters and I want to see where the story goes! I love the super natural aspect of the story as well. I want to see how Layla progresses in her new world!! I would recommend this read 100%!
Layla is barely living after loosing her mother, she discovers a mystery to her past which causes her to drive cross country. She is exploring the area when she runs into Quin, the attraction is instant but she doesnt know that he holds answers to her past. This book is filled with magic chemistry and mystery. pick it up today you will enjoy the whole series.
I loved this book. At first when I started reading I didn't think it would something I'd be into but after a few more pages I was hooked. I loved the letter Layla's mum wrote her, I felt Layla's pain and frustration as she read it, it was like I was there reading it with her. I felt excited when she met Quin, I'm wondering if her and Quin are supposed to soulmates?! I'm looking forward to reading the next book.
