I'm just not sure about this story. I thought of giving two stars for 'okay' but I'm upping it to three as there were parts I enjoyed, especially the beginning which intrigued me. However, there didn't seem much to the story and I felt disappointed when I reached the end.
Some parts made me raise my eyebrows. For example, Sarahjane walked across to the tea caddy to pour herself a cup of tea. A tea caddy is where tea leaves are stored, so I guess the author meant the teapot. St Agnes's seemed to be a catholic church since the priest was addressed as Father, but then a short time later this changed to Reverend. Just a small thing, but it made the story confusing. Young folk weren't called Teens in the late Victorian period, since the term 'teenager' didn't appear until the twentieth century. But what really puzzled me is that Felix and Sarahjane would need Queen Victoria's permission to marry. I couldn't understand why this would be so. Neither Felix nor Sarahjane were royalty.
As I said, these are small errors and perhaps no one else would notice but me. I do like facts to be right otherwise it spoils the story for me.
This is just my opinion and I'm happy to give three stars.

House of Dark Envy is a Gothic tale with some slightly fantastical elements thrown in to lend it a fresh sheen. The inventor hero has an unusual ability which, among his other personal attributes, intrigues the artistically-inclined heroine. Alas, however, forces conspire to separate the two, and neither hero nor heroine fully understand why. Throw in an eccentric mentor, a protective father, and a dark, spooky house with secret passageways, and you have a mysterious story with an unexpectedly suspenseful ending!

This was an interesting read.
Lingering questions about the past follow the characters through the story while they try to determine whether to trust each other.

He is sure that he loves her, but she is unwilling to admit a reciprocal love, even to herself, most times.

Her parents would do anything to achieve her happiness, even to the point of moving when gossip prevailed years ago.

There are some dark and scary moments in the story that leave the reader wondering what will happen.

A good story.

I enjoyed this story. The atmosphere and suspense are good. I like the plot and the main characters. One thing I did not understand why Sarajane and Felix needed Queen Victoria 's permission to marry. Neither of them was British Royalty.
