How to write noir in a city where, until 1990, the profession of private detective hadn't existed? Where the censors insisted on portraying police in the media and literature in a positive light? Tohle je naprosto klasická antologie, kvalitativně nahoru - dolů, tudíž hodnotit ji jako jeden celek je hodně problematické. Jedna povídka je úžasná (Stančík), další jsou skvělé (Kopřiva, Procházka) a pár dobrých (Tučková - tam to pokazil konec, jinak by to bylo skvělé, Sýkora, Cigan, Urban). Zbytek už pro mě byl spíše do počtu - neurazí, ale ani nezaujmou (byť tedy třeba Neffa nebo Hejdovou jsem nějak nepobrala).
Povídka je hodně náročný literární útvar a opět jsem si ověřila, že v Čechách není příliš spisovatelů, kteří by se s ní dokázali se ctí popasovat - tady snad bez výhrad pouze ten Stančík a a možná trochu překvapivě Kopřiva.
Tématem antologie je Praha a noir (spíše tedy hardboiled fiction) - obojí je ale také její slabinou, či spíš problémem. V řadě povídek je jejich usazení do konkrétních pražských reálií násilné a naprosto bezúčelné. Kdyby se odehrávaly kdekoliv jinde, tak by to nemělo žádný vliv (nejokatěji to asi platí pro Goffův Vyšehrad) nebo je potřeba místní znalost, což ale bohužel většina čtenářů (a už vůbec anglického překladu) nedá. Skvěle s místem si pohrála třeba Kateřina Tučková - byť jsem se do Goethe Institutu nachodila svého času hodně, tak jsem si musela ten dům, o němž píše (a který je hned vedle) vygooglovat - nebo Stančík, Procházka či Urban. U všech je místo tak podstatná součást děje, že nikde jinde by se to stát nemohlo.
Ještě o něco větší problém je ten noir - u nás tento typ literatury nemá tradici, takže se ani není k čemu odvolávat či na co navazovat, a tak si to každý z autorů přebere po svém a mnohdy by to nějakou hardcore definicí hardboiled fiction asi neprošlo. Paradoxně, nebo možná právě naprosto pochopitelně, nejvíc noir jsou oba scifaři ve výboru - Kopřiva a Procházka. Ještě víc tohle vynikne při srovnání s americkou hardboiled klasickou z Black Mask, kterou čtu teď - Black Mask - antologie detektivních příběhů.
Určitě nelituju, že jsem si knížku koupila, k některým povídkách se budu vracet a doufám, že od Stančíka či Kopřivy si brzo zase nějakou detektivku přečtu, ale díky rozkolísané úrovni textů je to tak 3,5 hvězdičky a nakonec po nějakém uvažování jsem se přiklonila spíš k zaokrouhlení dolů. Ale i kvůli těm třem či čtyřem výborným věcem to fakt stojí za to.
Kontext: Přesně v den, kdy jsem četla Neffovu povídku Opukový kruh, tak poprvé zpřístupnili baziliku sv. Václava, kde je opravdu i ten kruh - to se to tak někdy pěkně sejde.

Akashic Noir's Noir series is always a journey to new places. As discussed in the introduction, Neither Prague nor the Czech Republic as a whole has a noir tradition and not until recently even private detectives. Yet, what is important is that the crime stories here evoke a real sense of place. One of the things readers will discover in this volume is just how much history is involved in that sense of place above and beyond the different bridges, towers, and taverns. It is a place shaped by years of frustration behind the Iron Curtain and by the horrors of the Nazi regime. It also has a focus on the Jewish ghetto in Prague and the mythical Golem. Many stories here are about those returning to Prague, rediscovering it, remembering its past. All of the stories appear to be well-written, but some of the earlier ones lacked something to draw the reader in. Nevertheless, this is one I'll certainly return to and re-read, to catch whatever I missed. Many thanks to Akashic Noir for providing a copy for review.

Martin Goffa: Tři mušketýři.
Výborný start. Jednoduché, bez zbytečných parádiček, ale dobře šlapající, se silným motorem. Na malé ploše je načrtnutý prostý ale silný příběh, který funguje.
Štěpán Kopřiva: Amatéři
Štěpán prostě umí. I když se to jmenuje Amatéři, je to ryze profesionální práce. Zajímavé prostředí vietnamských pěstíren trávy, spousta technických detailů, dobrá zápletka – plus něco, co je v tomhle sborníku hodně ojedinělé: zvraty. Štěpán Kopřiva ve skvělé formě.
Miloš Urban: Mizení na mostě
Po dvou silných povídkách, první šlápnutí vedle. Nevěrohodné dialogy a ještě nevěrohodnější zápletka, která ale není napsaná dost zábavně na to, aby to bylo svižný pulp. S noirem to nemá nic společného... a ani moc s detektivkou.
Jiří W. Procházka: Mrtvá holka z čerťáku
A jedeme zase nahoru! Procházka válí. Pouťová atmosféra, drsný, ale celkem přesvědčivý hrdina, dobré popisy i vnitřní komentáře. Má to styl a i když detektivce trochu škodí to, že se musela skrčit na tak malém prostoru, funguje skvěle. (Jen jsem si tedy nevšiml, že by na Matějské pouti byly věštkyně a hrály se skořápky... ale možná jsem se jen blbě koukal.)
Chaim Cigan: Zázračný amulet
První mezní WTF. Povídka čistě kvůli autorovi, rabínu Sidonovi. Není to ani detektivka, ani noir... v podstatě to ani moc nemá zápletku, krizi, cokoliv. Prostě jen hmota.
Ondřej Neff: Opukový kruh
Druhé WTF. Ano, je to v kategorii Praha magická, ale pořád bych si myslel, že by tam aspoň nějaké detektivní či noirové prvky měly být. Tohle je čistá duchařina, navíc ve stylu „něco se stalo, možná je to něco nadpřirozeného, někdo hrdinovi řekne, že je to něco nadpřirozeného a ať jde tam a tam, on jde tam a tam, vidí něco nadpřirozeného, něco ho praští do hlavy, on se probere v nemocnici a je konec povídky.“
Petr Stančík: Kabinet sedmi probodnutých knih
Třetí WTF... ale na rozdíl od minulých dvou zatraceně zábavné. Ani nevím, k čemu to přirovnat, možná něco jako Adéla ještě nevečeřela, s šíleně bizarními vraždami a to celé popsané velmi barvitým stylem.
Kateřina Tučková: Život a dílo baronky Mautnicové
Solidně napsané, ale nějaký pokus o příběh je rozpuštěný ve vzpomínkách na komunismus. V podstatě by se ta detektivní příchuť dala klidně ignorovat. A asi i ta povídka.
Markéta Pilátová: Všechny starý převleky
Opět. Styl, atmosféra, ale jen takový chuťový ocas příběhu, který moc nedrží pohromadě a čtenář moc nechápe, proč se to vlastně děje.
Michal Sýkora: Percy Thrillington
Klasická detektivka českého střihu. Neurazí, neohromí.
Michaela Klevisová: Nový život
Jak u ženských autorek bývá, je tu obrovský důraz na emoce. Ale v tomhle případě se pod emocemi ukrývá i nějaký příběh, který do sebe v závěru zaklapne a který pracuje i s nějakými zvraty.
Petra Soukupová: Další nejhorší den
Čistě popis emocí po tom, co ženu opustí/zmizí manžel. Nic jiného.
Irena Hejdová: Olda číslo 3.
Na můj vkus moc hysterické, s dost odpudivou hrdinkou a nezajímavým příběhem o nalezením prstu... a hlavně chlapa. Prostě další příběh na téma „jsem nesnesitelná kráva, ale muži mě stejně milují“.
Petr Šabach: Večer tříkrálový aneb cokoliv chcete
No jo. Není možné udělat český sborník bez Šabacha. To je prostě zakázáno. Takže i tady jeden je. Je to příběh člověka, který odpovědně plánuje svou sebevraždu, je to mile napsaný, ale jedna z těch věcí, u kterých máte pocit, že na konci chybí nějaké stránky. A hlavně, není to kriminálka ani noir.
Což ostatně není většina věcí v tomhle sborníku. Ve výsledku je to spíše horší sborník, postižený především tím, že jen málo českých spisovatelů dokáže napsat něco jako moderní kriminálku. Z celého sborníku (čtrnáct povídek) stojí za přečtení čtyři autoři: Goffa, Kopřiva, Procházka, Stančík... a s malým přimhouřením oka bych přihodil i tu Klevisovou. Ostatní často zvládají literaturu, ale nezvládají, nechápou a často je ani nezajímá žánr.
Obávám se, že až to vyjde v zahraničí, asi není šance, že by vzrostl zájem o „českou detektivní školu“.

Vcelku zklamání, asi jsem čekala něco výraznějšího, většina povídek mě ale moc nebavila a podle mě se jich dost i minulo žánrem. Dost možná byl semtam i přehmat editora při výběru autorů.
Šabach, který nesmí chybět v žádné antologii, ale zrovna tady by klidně mohl - není to ani trochu jeho šálek kávy. Některé z povídek jsem prosvištěla, protože nebavily ani za mák (Cigan, Urban, Neff), některými jsem se prokousala, ale vší silou, například povídka Hejdové byla tak nějak hystericky naivní, vycucaná z (ufiklého) prstu. S psaním Soukupové mám obecně problém a nezměnilo se to. Něco nebylo špatné, ale nesedělo mi tak úplně do této sbírky (Tučková). Pak bylo pár dobrých, ale žádných obřích pecek (Sýkora, Klevisová, Goffa). Kopřiva moc dobrý, to svištělo, Stančík parádní, ale vlastně jen Mlýn na mumie zcuklý do povídky. Z celé sbírky mi naprosto vyčníval Procházka, to sedlo a navíc vybral pro detektivku parádní prostředí světských z "Matějské".
Celkově ale převládá zklamání, chtělo by to více úderných point a svištivých zápletek.

(book club) Dobre sa to celé čítalo, niektoré samozrejme lepšie a niektoré slabšie ale hlavne v druhej polovici sa mi ich páčilo veľa tak to vyšlo na štyri hviezdy. "Lepší život", "Olda č. 3" a "Život a dílo baronky Mautnicové" sa mi rátali najviac. Nedá mi ale nespomenúť naozaj hrozný preklad, keďže som z pohodlnosti a zvedavosti siahla najprv po anglickom vydaní - nevšimnúť si že titul poviedky je názov snáď najznámejšej Shakespearovej komédie či preložiť cisár Rudolf II ako Caesar Rudolph II, ako aj bezpočet iných čechyzmov, krkolomných viet a nekonzistentných rozhodnutí (v zbierke sa veselo striedaju 'korunas' s 'crowns') naozaj neprispieva k čitateľskému zážitku. Pracujem s prekladmi a samozrejme viem aké ťažké je prekladať z materinského do cudzieho jazyka, ale práve preto je nevyhnutné aby na knihe pracoval väčší profesionálny tím redaktorov vrátane native speakera ktorý by vychytal niektoré naozaj triviálne chyby. Veľká škoda, keďže poviedky samotné sú rozmanité a zaujímavé, zachytávajú rozličné stránky Prahy a česko(slovenskej) histórie a určite majú potenciál sa zapáčiť aj zahraničnému publiku, keby bol preklad lepšie zvládnutý.

Chvíli jsem váhala, co dát, ale nakonec zůstanu u neutrálního hodnocení 3*. Přeci jen ta kniha nebyla objektivně úplně špatná, jen mi vůbec nesedl žánr. Naprostá většina povídek mě vůbec nezaujala a za týden nebudu vědět, o čem byly. A i těch, co by mě bavily aspoň při čtení (byť by po nich nezůstal nějaký trvalejší dojem), nebylo moc; kdybych měla nějaké vypíchnout, tak Zázračný amulet, Lepší život a Život a dílo baronky Mautnicové. Zaujal mě i Kabinet sedmi probodnutých knih, ale to hlavně proto, že jsem byla zvědavá na autorův styl, a doufala jsem, že mi to pomůže se rozhodnout, jestli číst Mlýn na mumie. Rozhodnutá zatím stále nejsem, ale musím říct, že to byl jeden z mála autorů, který měl vlastní výrazný rukopis a nesplynul s šedí ostatních detektivek, to je určitě plus. Jestli je to ale styl, který by se mi líbil, jsem se zatím rozhodnout nedokázala.

Neviem ci to je zanrom (noir), alebo autormi, ale velka väcsina poviedok sa dedokazala neodputat od uz stokrat citanych klise - charakterov aj pribehov. Niektorym poviedkam usla pointa ( napr. Vecer Trikralovy aneb...), ine boli akosi uponahlane a kostrbate (napr. Kabinet...), v niektorych sa mi celkom pacil pribeh ale vadili mi klise charaktery ( Detektiv z Mrtvej holky, Alica v Lepsom zivote).
Ale boli tam aj poviedky ktore sa mi vyslovene pacili, ako Percy Thrillington, a podla mna najlepsia Zivot a dilo baronky Mautnicove.

The stories were truly well chosen, with varied themes, styles and genres. There was maybe one I didn't particularly like (Zazracny amulet). Collections of stories often tend to be hit or miss, so that's a great result.
At least a couple of them started off seemingly boring, but turned around at the end and threw the entire story into a different light, which I found delightful.

Príjemná zbierka, kde sa väčšina poviedok dobre citala. Samozrejme niektoré mi nesadli, ale nebolo ich veľa (možno dve). Oceňujem najmä poviedky: Mrtva holka z certaku, Lepsi zivot, Kabinet sedmi probodnutych knih.

Asi dle predpokladu, nektere povidky jsou velmi povedene, ale i par "necitelnych" by se naslo. Mezi ty povedene bych dal Michaelu Klevisovou a Michala Sykoru.
Knizka je dobra jako inspirace do kterych autoru se dale pustit.

Rozectena jeste v lonskem roce, ale doctena jako prvni letosni. Zaroven jsem si s ni dala takove mensi predsevzeti, ze se ceskym autorum budu zase venovat o trochu vice. Co se knizky tyka, tak se mi celkove libi ten napad s noir sborniky a je skvele, gmze se mezi mesta dostala i Praha. Jako celek je to skvele, cte se to samo a ja si udelala zalusk na radu autoru. A k jednotlivym povidkam. Za me rozhodne nejlepsi Amateri od Stepana Koprivy. To byla bomba, melo to atmosferu, bylo to na zajimave tema a se skvelym koncem.

Baronka Mautnicova - I kdyz je Tuckova takova slohiva a neustale nam chce dokladat nejaka fakta, tak povidce nelze uprit atmosferu. Jedna z lepsich.

Sums it up succinctly. In an age when the professional private detective did not come into existence until the 1990s, where there was no organised crime, and the secret police ruled with terror and fear, comes a diverse range of tales from all aspects of Czech history.
It is said that "... the best noirs end tragically or at least ambiguously .." and many of these tales fit that mold.
Not once was my attention diverted from the stories at hand, and I was captivated by the style of writing - there was no sense of repetition in the story telling - each was unique.
A great addition to a growing collection of international noir.

I love a good noir, especially from European authors. The distinctive and morose style is a refreshing break from the majority of my American author led shelves. These stories dealt with crime, unusual happenings and of course existentialism which i think is a give in with anything to do with Prague. I recommend short story compilations to anyone who wants to delve into a different genre and doesn't know where to start.

Jsou jen dva druhy povídek. První nesnáším, protože jsou moc krátké. Druhé nesnáším, protože jsou moc dlouhé. Tady jsou oba druhy. Fajn bylo vidět v hlavě originální lokace, byť Grébovka (na kterou jsem se těšil nejvíc) mě trochu zklamala. Nejlepší Stančík a Hůlová, nejslabší mi přišel Cigan/Sidon. Pro MH při putování po kavárnách optimální čtení.

Detective stories set in Prague? Seldom-translated Czech authors in English? What’s not to love?! The prologue to this collection explains that “Noir” does not really exist in Czech literature, so the stories in this collection only loosely fit the label. They are, however, all wonderful examples of detective stories, and perfectly capture the character of the city.

Me to bavilo. Vnimala jsem to spis jako soubor povidek. Nektere bavily vic, nektere min, ale vsechny byly dost ctive. Pod kuzi sice neulpi zadna, ale to jsem ani necekala.
Zanr nehodnotim, nejsem klasicky ctenar noir ani detektivek, ale propojeni s Prahou sympaticke. Dovedu si predstavit, ze anglicka verze cizince potesi.

Ogólnie czyta się to bardzo dobrze, choć tylko dwa, no, może trzy opowiadania ocierają się o tytułowy noir. I są w tym dobre i przekonujące. (...) Koło czarnego kryminału zdecydowana większość tych historii nawet nie stała. Ale wszystkie są warte przeczytania, choć najmniej podobały mi się te "mistyczne", oparte na legendach. Znakomita - przez typowy czeski humor - jest część czwarta. Zwłaszcza Hejdová i Šabach, którego frazę i poczucie tak czeskiego tragicznego humoru doceniam tu po raz pierwszy. (...)

Part of Akashic's "Noir" series of short story collections, this is probably the best overall book in the series I've read. These are all modern day writers who, I think are commissioned for inclusion in the collection. A wide variety of crime stories that fall under the sub-genre of noir. All taking place in Prague, Czech Republic, I found most of the stories to be excellent and only a few which didn't satisfy me bringing the average rating to a laudable 4/5.
1 - Three Musketeers by Martin Goffa - A man arranges to meet another man in a desolate place. There they begin a conversation in which we learn what the one man's grievance is with the other. Something from the past. A suspenseful story which slowly reveals itself to you, keeping just one step ahead of me. Excellent start to the collection! (5/5)
2 - Amateurs by Stepan Kopriva - Some thieves are about to rob a grow-op run by the Vietnamese mafia, as all such are these days in Prague. They've got an inside man and today is the day. But not everyone is who they seem to be. Very short but manages an intricate plot. Really liked this! (5/5)
3 - Disappearances on the Bridge by Milos Urban - A tech gives a seminar to a police force about new technology on the border crossing bridge. At some point they notice a woman in a red hood appears to simply disappear, none of the police will take action but the tech must figure out what has happened. Soon he appears on the screens and he too disappears, so an officer goes to investigate and we find out the strange goings on. Really good! and a fun ending. (5/5)
4 - The Dead Girl from a Haunted House by Jiri W. Prochazka - Loved this one! Somewhat of a standard murder/detective story but made unique by its setting set behind the scenes of a carnival. I just love circus themed stories so I was particularly enchanted with this. An ex-cop PI is hired by the owner of a gypsy carnival troupe because his daughter was brutally murdered. The PI comes in, investigates a bit then gathers the group and exposes the killer. Good characterization. (5/5)
5. The Magical Amulet by Chaim Cigan - Not a particularly interesting story and as far as I can tell there is nothing "noir" about it. Taking place is Soviet Czechoslovakia, a Jewish family's good luck charm is the topic of conversation as well as the boy narrator's discussions of WWII with a Polich Jew. (3/5)
6. Marl Circle by Ondrej Neff - It was hard o concentrate on this story I didn't much like it. The story goes into some Czech history and centres around possible paranormal activity. The story even concludes with an "Author's Note" explaining the true history and renovations going on of the archaeological site which is the setting of the story. (2/5)
7. The Cabinet of Seven Pierced Books by Petr Stancik - This takes place in the mid-1800s in the Ghetto where not only the poorest of the poor live, but also all the outsiders such as astrologers, psychics, etc. A death occurs there and they find out he was a fortune teller who has been murdered. The detective works the case meanwhile a second fortune teller is murdered and then a third who managed to leave a clue as to his killer. A bit weird but ok. (3/5)
8. The Life and Works of Baroness Mautnic by Katerina Tuckova - At first this tale seems only to be that of a house. It's history through 20th century Czech Republic, though not always called that. The wealthy owner, then his family go through the country becoming socialist, then communist, then invaded by the USSR and finally it's liberation as a republic once more. It's not until the very end that the current poverty-stricken owner of the house discovers its wicked little secret which saves her from destitution. Loved it! (4/5)
9. All the Old Disguises by Marketa Pilatova - Hmmm. Rather longwinded. A grandson brings his grandfather's "partner" to Prague for nefarious reasons. He wants the man's cooperation in signing documents which will give him restitution for buildings stolen by the former Soviet government. It doesn't turn out as expected though. (3/5)
10. Percy Thrillington by Michal Sykora - A standard police mystery. While visiting the narrator's friend, a retired cop, said cop shows an old McCartney album and then starts into the story of how that LP helped him to solve his first murder case, an apparent suicide. Nothing fantastic, but a straight-forward old school murder mystery - (2/3)
11. Better Life by Michaela Klevisova - This had a surprise twist that got me. An antiques dealer notices a woman continually watching him and slyly taking pictures so thinks she's an undercover detective. Then he begins to wonder if she is a stalker after she's spoken to him, and perhaps has taken a fancy to him. When he finds out just what she was up to it comes as a terrifying shock. (4/5)
12. Another Worst Day by Petra Soukupova - A woman reports her husband missing when he doesn't return from a jog. The next several days follow the investigation and then weeks and months go by and Radka realises she is following a new routine. The story comes from the point of view of the detective assigned to the case. An interesting mystery. (4/5)
13. Olda No. 3 by Irena Hejdova - This is an odd little story and rather macabre. Just how I like 'em! A woman wakes up with a stranger in her bed, finds out his name is Olda, the same as her ex so she starts referring to him as Olda No.2. That morning she takes the dog for a walk and he brings her, of all things, a severed pinkie finger with a wedding ring on it Turns out Olda No. 2 is a cop, a traffic cop but still a cop, and they search for the owner of the finger. (5/5)
14. Epiphany, or Whatever You Wish by Petr Sabach - This is a really good story but with a rather weird and unsatisfactory ending. A man decides to commit suicide because he is having murderess thoughts. The main thing that drives his character is that he never disturb anyone else. So he spends time deciding on how to kill himself without inconveniencing anyone. Things do come to a fruition but not exactly as he had planned. Good execution except, as I said, the end. (3/5)

Český příspěvek do série noirových antologií věnovaných vždy jednomu městu, kterou už léta vydává nakladatelství Akashic (mezi nejslavnější patří Boston noir editované Dennisem Lehanem), je takový, mno, nemastný-neslaný.
Předně - noirů, tedy povídek ve stylu americké drsné školy, je z celkového počtu 14 textů přibližně třetina. A z toho jen dvě doopravdy stojí za přečtení - povídky Štěpána Kopřivy (nečekaně) a Petry Soukupové (překvapivě, protože mi přijde ještě o fous lepší než ta Kopřivova).
Takový Jiří Walker Procházka si vystřihl také moc dobrou, zábavnou povídku se Štolbou (z knihy Mrtvá Šelma) v hlavní roli, ale ta je spíše "temnější whodunnitkou" než noirem. Potěšil také text Petra Stančíka.
Zhruba stejně jako je v knize noirů, je v ní i textů, které vlastně nejsou ani detektivkou. A několik by jich ve svém žánrovém zařazení mohlo zfleku mít "dechberoucí nuda".
Takže klasický nešvar antologií - nevyváženost - se propsal i do pražského noiru.

Poslouchal jsem audioknihu, takže jsem nečetl žádnou poznámku editora, ale od něčeho co má ve jménu Noir čekám noir (minimálně český pokus o tento žánr). A takových povídek je tu překvapivě minimum, jakoby autoři nevěděli, co se po nich vlastně chce... Pár napsalo alespoň krimi, někteří jsou úúplně mimo (Šabach, Cigan). Hezky se tu taky ukazuje rozdílnej přístup autorek, kdy víc jak polovina příběhu stojí na popisu emocí.
Za mě za přečtení stojí: Kopřiva, Procházka, Goffa, Klevisová; bavil mě i Sýkora, byť to je taková normální detektivka alá Četnické humoresky.

S knihami povídek mám vždycky trochu problém - hlavně když jsou ty povídky fakt dobrý (divný, já vím, ale hned vysvětlím). Povídka je jako nakouknutí do knížky, která vlastně neexistuje. Když pak skončí, hrozně mě to zklame, protože nemůžu číst dál, i když bych hrozně ráda.
No a Praha noir je vlastně plná takového zklamání (což, jak teď už chápete, je vlastně ode mě poklona).

Prague Noir is the most recent release in what is without question the best anthology series of mystery short stories. I love and respect “Best American” but the novelty of touring the world through noir is ingenious and irresistible. Prague Noir whisks us off to the capital of the Czech Republic, a country that has seen more than its share of turmoil. Because it was a police state for much of the golden age of noir, there were no private detectives or any of the other hallmarks of the noir tradition. Of course, as the series editor Pavel Mandys points out, Scandinavian noir is a huge success despite the low murder rate of the Nordic nations. His introduction does a great job of providing context for the stories.
There are fourteen stories in Prague Noir divided into four parts. The first part, Sharp Lads is right in the world of crime. Magical Prague connects us to historical Prague along with a bit of the paranormal. “Marl Circle” is an out and out horror story, while “The Cabinet of Seven Pierced Books” reminded me of early detective stories. The third section, Shadows of the Past, included some of my favorite stories, including “The Life and Work of Baroness Mautnic” and “All the Old Disguises” that is as perfectly noir as noir can be. I also liked the third story in this section, a retiring detective recounting the story of how a Paul McCartney album helped solve a murder. The last section, Jeopardy, has some story that are just achingly human. A man’s loving toleration for his sister becomes his saving grace in “Better Life” and then in “Epiphany” we have the heartbreaking story of a man so self-effacing, he wishes to kill himself in order not to kill his wife.
I enjoyed Prague Noir very much. Of course, I confess that I am biased. I love mysteries, I love short stories, I love anthologies, and I love armchair travel, and I love how this series combines them all. This was an excellent collection, though, stretching the definition of noir a bit, but never too far. It was interesting to have another window into Czech society in addition to the fine literature and poetry that have been translated. If you like noir, you will love this book.

I have been reading this series of books from Akashic Books, and was given this to review by Edelwiss+Plus. The quality of the series varies, but this one of Prague stories is one of the better ones I have read so far. The introduction covers the political history of Prague, and why detective stories are not common literature there. However there are lots of great storytellers in this city, and many of them are Jewish so I had plenty of great stories to pick from. And I could have bet money that one of the stories was about a Golem, which if you are not familiar with that Jewish folk tale it is the story of a mystical monster made from clay (similar to Frankenstein) that has great physical strength and invariable turns on its creator. There are a lot of analogies for that tale, and it tied in nicely with the artificial intelligence book I was also reading. Anyway, good job on the editing Pavel Mandys! I read short story collection because I also find new authors this way that I want to read more of their work. The only problem with this book is that many of the authors' work has not been translated to English yet.

As the introduction states, Prague has no tradition of noir, though some writers have dabbled in it. I was intrigued in the format, which features original short stories that, as far as I know, are not available elsewhere, not even in Czech. Each story is set in a different part of Prague.
Anthologies generally suffer from uneven quality. Some stories are great, some are not that great. This anthology was no exception, though none of the stories were really that bad. Amateurs by Štěpán Kopřiva had a twist I didn't see coming, and Disappearances on the Bridge by Miloš Urban is a take on the locked-room mystery, except with the iconic Charles Bridge instead of a room. The Dead Girl from A Haunted House was one of the more "noir"ish stories, set in the Holesovice exhibition grounds, which is close to where I live. Percy Thrillington by Michal Sýkora (no relation to the hockey player of the same name) was an interesting mystery that my friend Ginger would enjoy, as Paul McCartney plays a central role in the story.
The rest were further from noir, some better than others and I would give the whole kit and caboodle a solid 3.5 stars, rounded up here to four.

Prague Noir was different from any other noir series I've read from this Akashic collection. I must admit I struggled a bit through the first two parts of this book, especially Part II, Magical Prague. I struggled not because the storytelling wasn't good, but because the stories themselves just didn't grab my specific interests the way they normally do. That being said, I did enjoy Three Musketeers, The Death of the Girl From the Haunted House and The Magical Amulet from this half of the book.
Parts III and IV on the other hand sucked me in! Each story more gripping and creative than the previous story. In Part III The Life and Work of Baroness Mautnic took a complete 36o degree turn, at least for me, near the end that just made my jaw drop. Part IV was my favorite part by far. There was not a story in it I didn't thoroughly enjoy; I couldn't read these stories fast enough!
There is something for every kind of reader in this collection, different genres, etc. Definitely go out and pick this one up.

Rozhodně jde o zajímavý nápad na povídkovou knížku příběhů odehrávajících se v jednom městě a jsem rád, že po velkých světových městech přišla na řadu i Praha. I přesto, že u podobného typu knížky lze očekávat široký záběr autorů a různé styly psaní, tady mi to nějak jako celek fungovalo jen tak na půl. Polovina velmi zajímavá a polovina prostě slabá a pro mě ne příliš čitelná. Ale jak píše autor sbírky předmluvě: „Historie české literární detektivky není příliš bohatá a rozmanitá a subžánr označovaný jako noir se v ní vyskytuje sporadicky.“ Takže děkuji za takové pokusy, a i příště se do čtení vrhnu po hlavě.
