Declarations

Rate this book
This is a pressed bruised. This is Greta Garbo's smile. This is the smell of Windex. Declarations is an imperfect chronicle of a life lived; a body pulled through time, encountering meteorological phenomenon, mythology, political calamity, pop culture, and everyday happenstance along the way. Written in the wake of his mother's terminal cancer diagnosis, Tannahill's Declarations is a staggering archive of sensations, memories, and voices asserting that here lived, for a time, a woman.

Jordan Tannahill is an Ottawa-born, London UK–based playwright and filmmaker. His work has been presented at major theaters and festivals across Canada and internationally.

I saw this work first at Canadian Stage in January of 2018 and was blown away by it at the time. Reading it in paper form over three years later it still has a great impact and a unique poetry that took me to many places. It feels like having a fever dream, a nostalgic memory and being at a performance art reading all at the same time.

While plays and performance pieces often do not translate well to a written format this highly personal work hit me hard.
