It's hard to review a book like that. The informations given are quite helpful, especially in imagining the mindset concept artists should have. It gives insight into different daily work schedules from the featured artist which was pretty interesting because they differed surprisingly a lot. I knew a bunch of the tips given already, but that's only because I frequently inform myself about that anyway. Overall a nice and helpful collection of tips from business professionals
Side note: I entered the exact ISBN of the copy I read, and while goodreads says the book is 288 pages, my copy is only 200. Don't know why my page counts are always so off from what goodreads says they are...
Anyway, I'm not looking for a career in concept art anymore, but back in high school I wanted to be a character artist for video games. So I was curious what a guide like this would contain, and I could even use it as knowledge should I ever create a character of my own that was in the field. While it is a good basic guide and gives some tips from people working in the industry, it's not as specific as I (and I'm sure others) were hoping. The main takeaways are that you don't necessarily need college/university to get hired, you should make a point of having your own site, and a portfolio to bring with you places, put yourself out there and go to conventions... but while the people interviewed for the purpose of the book do work at specific companies (one even worked at Naughty Dog on Uncharted 3 and 4!) they don't all say how they got into the field. It's not an exact science of course, with hiring people possible over places like ArtStation and such... but I guess I expected more specifics from a book like this.
This book is the best guide for all who are interested in the concept artist career path. From those who have just become familiar; those who have no idea where to start, and even those already in the concept art industry who are looking for tips, tricks and resources to further their career. I would honestly say that this guide is invaluable, and I have learnt so much from my first read. This is definitely staying close to me!
It feels more like a collection of articles than a book, but the directions on how to focus your portfolio as well as the daily routine of a professional artist do make for inspiring reading.
Great book to keep on my shelf. There's lots of practical advice and professional concept artists featured in here. I will be returning to this book a lot.
