There are 118 elements in the periodic table - learn what each one does and how you interact with them every day in this stunning full-color photographic guide! Looking at the periodic table can be a bit daunting... how can you possibly remember what 118 different elements do? The Periodic Table takes a new approach to this important science topic by offering a fully visual guide to the elements. Featuring eye-popping photography and an enormous wealth of cool facts, this is the only book you'll need to help you learn about the basic building blocks that make up everything in our world.
If you don’t know what an element is, this book is the perfect place to start learning about atoms and the things that they constitute. A thing that only contains atoms with only the same number of protons is called “an element.” There are scores of elements (many new ones only exist for a short period of time because they are the result of smashing one kind of particle into another.) Materials that are the result of chemical bonds between two or more different kinds of atoms are for another book (see molecules).
The periodic table is a chart that shows “families” of elements and is useful to many scientists, engineers and others in commerce for describing substance behavior from melting point to toxicity to ability to form compounds (see molecules). The periodic table is one of the most elegant ways of conveying so much information. It has generally been credited to the Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev, and others have used it both to discover new elements and to “fill in the gaps.”
Full of illustrations and examples, I know of no current book that can be as instructive to a third grader and still be very interesting and helpful to the average adult.
This book is about the periodic table, in its entirety, to date! As you proceed chapter by chapter, you learn about the original table and the addition in 1944. The reader will also notice that there are so many more metals and other interesting elements that a lot of people may not even know of. For myself, I very much enjoyed this book because I love to learn about things that matter, get it? Matter! This book has many pictures. For example, its picture of an emerald noting its proper element name of "beryllium". I know a lot of science lovers will enjoy reading this book. This book will also help with science classes in your future.
Girls and boys, ages 6 and older, would like this book because it has written and visual information about all of the elements. Thea O., 8, Greater New York Mensa
