Most comics take the view that life is worth fighting for, that we should rage against the dying of the light. The Thanos Imperative’s a refreshing inversion of that, positing that a universe where death had been abolished wouldn’t be an altogether healthy one and that a heroic quest against an invasion from it would involve reintroducing death. Abnett et al have a great deal of fun with this idea, finding a very logical turning point where the universes split and thinking the logic of what would happen to various life forms very carefully and exactly how it might need to be defeated. It’s a wonderfully large scale story filled with the most powerful beings from the Marvel universe and alt-universe parodies of other familiar faces with Thanos getting a pleasingly antiheroic role and Nova and the Guardians of the Galaxy playing their full part.

Where I wasn’t quite so enamoured of the story was the artwork; Nothing wrong with the idea of trying Miguel Sepulveda’s slightly more scuzzy style on a space epic but I tend to prefer the cleaner lines Brad Walker brings in the early issues on display here.

To tell the truth I'm over these Marvel universe-threatening stories, they are all glamour, presentation and hyperbole rather than story and it's hard to tell who to pay attention to in the huge ensemble cast.

For a long-time Marvel fan they smack too much of DC hyperbole for my liking. Apologies to the DC fans out there, but when every character seems to be on an equal footing with beings who appear to have Superman levels of power, I just lose any sense of belief in the story. And once you've seen one superhero gratuitously smashing/blasting their way through hordes of enemies, you seen enough, from my point of view.

Minor Spoiler Alert: There were only two things of interest to me in this story: the connection to HP Lovecraft and the Peter Quill aspect, but this last was detracted from because all the characters that made a difference in this story were Earthmen.

Rah, rah, good for us, but it doesn't make a lot of sense, unfortunately.

Your mileage may differ and it probably would have worked better separated out over a number of years rather than getting them as part of this collection.

This was awesome. It's hectic yet tight and when you think things couldn't get worse for the whole group of heroes here, Guardians of the Galaxy, Nova, Queen Medusa etc it does.
Thanos believed dead is back to life and pretty well upset for being dumped by his 'muse' death. Adam Warlock's evil counterpart Magus is causing no ends of trouble.
There is an alternate reality called the cancerverse and that is where it all hits the fan and then even more trouble comes along that could destroy everything.

Read it as there are lots of fun moments and great lines, twists and turns all with some great art work.

Dear Marvel, now THAT'S how you deliver an event storyline. Rather than an overblown hero v hero storyline, we're given an exciting and emotional tale with real stakes. Phenomenally told and drawn, with exceptional character work within, this is a brilliant story.
