Rate this book

Renege on a deal with a Dragon Lord, and become part of his hoarde.

It wasn't easy raising three girls with Fae blood in the Outlands. If Kailigh wasn't busy chasing them out of the local taverns, she was busy teaching them to hunt, shoot and kill - to fight against flesh traffickers from the Cities, prowling town for girls to send to rich patrons. And now, with the youngest shot and fighting for her life, Kailigh has no choice but to petition for the help of the Dragon Lord Maddugh, King of Coal and Mountain.

Only he's no fool - he knows right away Kai isn't quite human. And three girls of courting age? He's not about to let them slip through his fingers when his men are wanting for mates with even a drop of magical blood. So she'll have to strike a bargain. He'll save her daughter's life, and help her hunt the man responsible, but he has a price. A price he demands Kailigh pay in flesh...

Emma is a Black/white Muslim American mom of five, ages 6-22, in her mid-forties just trying to live her best life…which usually includes coffee, wine, and an unfortunate habit of one-clicking any pretty special edition that winds up in her feed. (If you DM it, she will come.)

She likes K-pop (#army, #moa) cultivation dramas (Till the End of the Moon,) precioussss silence, and collects more makeup than she uses.

She bends knee to Michelle Sagara West, Anne Bishop, N.K. Jemisin, Grace Draven, J.D. Robb, and Nalini Singh—a nod to Sanderson, Goodkind, Eddings, McCaffrey, and McKinley.

If you are looking for romantic epic fantasy set in complex, diverse, sex positive worlds with morally gray societies, powerful anti-heroes with THAD energy, multi-racial heroines at least 35—if not 350—coming into power, and a central theme of family, both dysfunctional and supportive, then you will binge her stories..

As Katrina said: This was fun!
It's a real piyy it's too short to be acceptable, there's no love at first sight nor mate stupidity, but characters would have improved with some more depth. Plus the ending seems rushed, so the first half was better than the second one.

Still, I'm in for the sequel :)

Story was as good as the cover yay!

What a world and characters! The heroine is smart practical pretty talented and a mom. The hero is alpha intelligent and more stubborn than the heroine just. Looking forward to more in this world. I don't know if I want the next book to be more of the current couple or one of the daughters. Guess we'll find out, hopefully soon.

Read through Kindle Unlimited but had to immediately purchase for my permanent library.

Nu este cea mai bună carte cu dragoni pe care am citit-o, iar 'șeful' se comporta cam omenește, dar e destul de legată și de amuzantă.

Mediocre

The world building was lacklustre, the characters weren't very well fleshed out, the story was as predictable ad they come and the editing was spotty. This authour is a pass for me, even with free books.

Strong female characters

An excellent paranormal shifter book. Kai is an amazing and strong single mother who is willing to risk all for her daughters. A shape shifter Dragon king hopes she will risk her heart to him.

Oh my gosh. This was a great read that I did not want to put down. I loved the fact that the two main characters were not yungyons and I loved the fact that their children were all extremely special and flashy individuals.
Kailigh has spent the majority of her life working to make it so that her daughters would not have to worry about every little thing in life. Especially since she taught them how to fight and how to win against every male out there. To bad she did not know how to heal her children when her youngest is caught in a gun fight and is left to die from infection. That's where the lord of the mountain comes into play. Lord Maddugh is lord of the mountain, and he is one of the few people she goes out of her way to avoid.
Maddugh is bored, there is no excitement and there is no change from the mundane. So when a feisty female who does not seem to be all mortal comes barging into his throne room things may finally be looking up. Especially when you add her daughters into the equation.
This was s spicy book that you will not want to put down and this was yet another marvelous read by Ms. Alisyn. I can not wait to see what comes next in the series.... and I am really hoping that up next is Cin and the second son. I can not wait to see all of the potential couples in future books in this series.
I absolutely loved it and so will you.

This book had an interesting concept to it. I wasn’t too clear on the steampunkish-ness or whole technology bit. It just seemed rather vague to me. I’m curious to read more about the world itself and learn about the other creatures exiled on Earth.
When it came to Kailigh I had a love hate feeling for her. When she wasn’t being contrary to be contrary and actually relaxed and gave in a little it was better for me. I know people where the phrase “cut your nose off despite your face” applies to them too well and so that amount of stubbornness just tends to annoy the hell out of me. I think of her as a character that is mostly good until she opens her mouth/mind. I also got tired of hearing how old she was, how she raised three girls, and the other stuff she did.
Maddugh was an okay character I don’t get a lot when I think back on him so there isn’t really anything that sticks out about him for me. I’m curious to see how the other dragons start acting around the daughters, though I hope they get over being as prickly as their mom.

I really enjoyed how the heroine was a bit older then the usual in this genre. She had adult girls of her own and each were fascinating characters. They were strong willed, tough and independent. I loved how they were constantly going out on their own to resolve issues. The dragons were also fun and full of excitment. I liked all of the characters in this read and there was an abundance of them. Overall, I was very impressed with this book and will defiantly read the next installment. I also appreciate it being offered as a kindleunlimited.

Great beginning to a new series. To start, I love that the main character is a kickass and don't take any bs from men, older female. The fact she may be even more than she seems is even better. And the male that falls for her is in for a fight. Just wish she could see how beautiful she really is. There are some great scenes of beating the bad guys. It does get a little hot but at the same time it is never graphic. Can't wait for book two.

This book had potential, but at the end of the day it just didn't feel fleshed out. It didn't really commit to steampunk, or fantasy, or any other one genre, rather felt like a weird piecing together of many. I also felt like, for the first book in a series, the characters and world were not well enough established for me to really engage with them. I just felt a little... whatever... about the whole thing.

This ended up not being anything like the story I thought I was getting from the synopsis and what I did get managed to rub me completely the wrong way.

I had issues with the characters, finding them all rather flat and one dimensional as well as in turns childish and unlikable. Both the main characters had excessive control issues and everyone seemed to give in to some seriously sexist "little women" BS mentality, even though dwyrkin women supposedly kick arse and take names so I don't know why Maddugh was treating Kai like she was made of spun glass and must be kept in a gilded cage for her own protection.

I also found the writing to be on the problematic side with many instances of there simply not being enough descriptive scene setting to know what was going on or to know who was even there. This led to several scenes where characters seemingly popped in and out of existence or time to slip and slide in unusual ways.

For me the worst thing was the world-building being extremely shallow and lacklustre, with lots of points of interest being thrown out to me but then not receiving any further details to make me care.

Maybe in a different time and place I'd be more forgiving with my rating, but it just happened to have the bad luck of being the first thing to catch my attention after a brief reading hiatus and then being a massive Not My Thing disappointment. Which isn't the story's fault, it is what it is, but knowing that doesn't make me enjoy it any more.

However, I know there ARE many, many readers out there that like this sort of PNR. So if you enjoy controlling "alpha males" who like to throw their weight around and salty heroines that have stewed in their own bitter misery until they've grown cynical and jaded with the world, and you definitely enjoy them being angry at each other and having sex, then this may be just the thing you're after.

2.5 stars rounded down. The story was OK, and I liked the characters well enough, but the ending was quite disappointing.
It starts in what felt like the middle of things with the youngest daughter dying, but we’re not shown how or why she got shot, we’re just given pieces here and there through the book. They seemed to know the bad guy from before, and it gave me the impression they had some history with him, but we’re never told any of that. Felt like I missed a few chapters and a whole prequel.
Kai never accepted Maddugh, and the author didn’t really make an effort to convince the reader that she loved him. She kept thinking it could be worse right until the end of the book, and then the epilogue comes out of nowhere with their wedding. And still she didn’t seem to love him at all, sometimes I thought she didn’t even like him. Nobody says “I love you” at all. Maddugh seemed to find her entertaining, but beyond lust he didn’t seem to feel anything for her, and all his “protectiveness” came off as sexist more than anything else. He strong-arms Kai into a lot of things, and micromanages her constantly, even after promising not to. This was not a romance. At least it didn’t feel like one. If this was real life these two would divorce within the month.
Sex scenes get progressively more explicit, with the first one being a fade to black thing and the last a very explicit (not particularly good) one. To be honest, I hardly believe Kai felt any lust towards Maddugh, it felt more like she just gave in to him because it was easier.
There were so many loose ends it was unsatisfying. The bad guy is kinda dealt with, but I couldn’t say if he died or was just imprisoned, because he falls, hits his head, and he’s forgotten and never mentioned again. He could have run, for all I know. Gaston is another antagonist that is just forgotten at some point. We’re told he fled, and that’s it.We’re just left with a vague threat of some guy who was financing the “Traders” (Gaston had people behind him too, but they’re forgotten as well) that’s gonna continue in the next book. Which I’m not going to read because the characters aren’t that interesting to risk another disappointing ending.

I've been working with coworkers recently on some steampunk themed events and I have a big passion for dragons, so seeing this cover was really intriguing! I figured what could go wrong with steampunk and dragons, then to read the synopsis and find out it's also an apocalyptic, paranormal, kick-ass heroine novel. Score!

Kailigh has been living and raising her three girls in the Outlands successfully since she kicked her no-good husband to the curb. She's done what most women and many men for that matter couldn't, survive and thrive on her own raising three strong daughters that know how to shot, kill and stand strong when needed. But now that flesh traffickers have their sights set on her family and her daughter's been shot, she needs help. In this town that means Dragon Lord Maddugh, King of Coal and Mountain.

Maddugh can't believe that Kailigh has lived in his town and he and the Dwrkin never recognized her for what she was. A mixed blood Fae/Dwrkin and hope for their species. No Dwrkin females live in this world since the portals closed, now Maddugh has a chance to negotiate with Kailigh for the endangered life of her daughter. Save her daughters life for a commitment of marriage and children from at least two her daughters and herself? That's not too much to ask, especially when he wants Kailigh for himself.

This is a great combination of steampunk technology in an apocalyptic world and shape-shifting dragons (Dwrkin). I'm really looking forward to book two in this series!

World building is good. getting the lay of the land seemed a bit difficult at first, but went better in time. All scenes and environments were well detailed and felt real.

Character development was decent. We got a good grip on how Kailigh and her 3 daughters lived and survived in the Outlands. How they laid low, not wanting to bring more attention to themselves than needed. All of that for nothing since Kai needed Maddugh's help in saving Cin's life, he notices that they're not quite human and there we go!
It was nice reading a book about a mature woman with (grown up) children. It just feels that they have a tad more wisdom, I would say also some reluctance to running straight into danger.. but no, that's pretty much Kai and her daughters :)
While we got to know the basics on pretty much all players, nothing really in depth, not on Kailigh's side nor on Maddugh's. Hopefully more of that puzzle will be solved in the next installments.

Pacing and flow were good, not too much downtime, some funny facepalm-moments and right back into the action. It didn't feel rushed, the story was told in its own time.

The book itself was well written with only some very small errors here and there (nothing that would throw you out of the story) and yes, there is sex described.

All in all it was better than what I had anticipated, so that made me very happy :) The characters do feel a tad superficial at this time, but hope that will get resolved with more backstory/info in the next instalment.

I kind of liked the overall story, but I found Kailigh annoying at times, and I thought that more could have been shown at the end.

Cinvarra, Kailigh’s daughter, is dying and Maddugh is the only one that can help her, so Kailigh makes a deal with him. The deal included Kailigh and her three daughters going to his castle with him, where not much really happens.

Maddugh throws a party, and yet there is no courting. He tries to convince Kailigh to give him a chance so that she could be his queen, but even when she does eventually agree, she keeps acting on her own and they never act like partners.

There were several side characters, (Kailigh has three daughters and Maddugh has three sons), but I don’t think I’d call them well developed. Nuaddan never appears and Hrutha acts differently each time (Maddugh’s sons). I didn’t understand Cinvarra’s lack of self-preservation, and Persia didn’t really stand out in any way (Kailigh’s daughters). Serephone sounds interesting, not only because of her personality, but also because of her skills. Amnan was another character that I look forward to reading about.

While this book wasn’t the best (mostly because of Kailigh’s character), I still want to try the next book in the series as I’m very curious about Amnan and Serephone, and I really hope that Serephone is different.

Kailigh was raising three half-fae girls on her own in the Outlands and it wasn't easy to keep them out of the local taverns while teaching them how to hunt shoot and kill - especially as there were flesh traffickers from the Cities prowling town for girls to send to rich patrons. With her youngest shot and fighting for her life, she has no choice but to petition for help from the Dragon Lord Maddugh for help. However, the dragon is no fool and knows immediately that Kai is not quite human and with three daughters of courting age he will not let them slip through his hands. o he strikes a bargain with her - he'll save her daughter's life, help hunt the man responsible but in return his price is in flesh and you cannot go back on an agreement with a Dragon Lord.

Part of me loved this story with the involvement of the dragons, the flesh traffickers and the special skills that Kai and her daughters have, but part of me really hated this book. She was just far too aggressive, argumentative and independent - it was just over the top. Although I stuck with it to finish this book I cannot bring myself to read the next book as I worry that it will be of a similar style. Contains just a little sexual content.

Kailigh is a woman living alone with three daughters.
They live in a mining town.
Their surroundings aren't exactly friendly.
But these ladies are as rough and tough enough to take care of themselves.
When her youngest daughter is injured, Kailigh is forced to seek help from Maddugh, the dragon shifter that controls their area.
Maddugh strikes a bargain with Kailigh, which requires she and her daughters to return to his home and choose suitable males to mate with.
As the ruler, he is concerned about replenishing his ranks.
And these unique women are just what is needed.
They are all equally beautiful, equipped with have warrior skills, honor, and prowess.
MAddugh is instantly taken with Kailigh, yet she feels it's a waste of time because she has three grown daughters and has no time or want for love. Maddugh is relentless in his pursuit, no matter how Kailigh tries to resist his charm.
Her daughters are as different as night and day and have strong personalities.
As does Maddugh's sons.
This was a great book, looking forward to the next one to see how and if the daughters choose mates.

Kailigh’s 17-year-old daughter Cinvarra was limp and deadly pale from a flesh wound that would not heal. She had been shot by Ruthus Adjrius during an attempt to kidnap her. When the flesh traffickers had come, Kai and her daughters had waited to the last minute so they could sell their produce or they would not meet their budget. So they had waited longer than was safe before they ran. Now Doc said Cin’s blood was poisoned and they had no medicines to treat her. He suggested she go to Lord Maddugh because he could help her, despite her intense dislike of the man. The Dwyrkin Lord was her only option. But what he wants is her daughters with their magic for his people. And the shape shifter dragon king wants her to offer her own heart to him. Will these two stubborn people open their hearts to each other and make a new life together? Can the dragon lord save Cin’s life?

This was a wonderful paranormal shifter story with a good story line and great characters. Kai was stubborn and annoying at times, but she was a strong single mother who loved her daughters and was willing to so whatever she had to for them. Don’t miss this one!

Definitely different. Steampunk which I dont read too often. It had a sorta urban feel but its not a UF. I do agree with other reviewers that it needed to be more in depth. Felt rushed at the end. No character growth. We dont get to know the daughters at all. So, maybe the next books we do. Maddugh was interesting but it was really hard to tell his feelings a lot of times. Kai was a tough hombre and it was easy to forget she was a woman because of that. I think she should have been a little more soft not a lot just a bit. It had a plot but it fell flat and seemed a lot of dancing around it and no real end in sight. It says its over 300 pages but I dont think so. I'd say closer to 200. I did read it fairly quickly but yeah its not 300 pages noway. The book itself stopped at 87%. I might read the next one but I am not sure. Depends how quickly she gets the book released.

Very Good!

This book was very good, fast paced with a lot of fight scenes.

Maddugh is the Dragon King who has be feeling bored & is looking for some kind of excitement.

Kailigh or Kai as she's called several times in this book has 3 daughters & 1of them is injured & without help that a regular doctor can't give will die.

So, in order for her daughter to live she goes to Maddugh's castle & makes a plea & a bargain with him to save her daughter's life. He agrees but won't say what he wants until he sees her daughter; once he sees & saves her daughter & sees Kai's other daughters he tells Kai what he wants.

&that is the beginning of Maddugh & Kai's courtship. This book has some not explicit sex scenes, lots of fight scenes between the good vs the bad guys, some snarkiness & a lot of dragons. I finished this book in a matter of hours as I didn't want to put this book down & I can't wait to read the next book in this series.

Quirky. The wild west meets UF.

I wasn’t sure what I was getting into, but the premise (and sample) intrigued me enough that I downloaded it - thank God for KU.

I found some very strong, independent and feisty female characters. Loved Kai. She is a strong role model to her young adult daughters, and when things go pear shaped, she can be relied upon to do anything for those she loves. That means striking a bargain with the local Dragon Lord (who wasn’t as bad as I’d been expecting).

There is a secondary plot running underneath that of the romance bargain angle, and my only problem is that it wasn’t developed into more of a main plot. It flashes to life as the author requires, then sinks back into the background until called upon again.

That said, I had a lot of fun reading this, and I will be picking up the next book (unfortunately it follows one of the daughters, and I want more of Kai!).

Loved this book, even if the ending seemed a bit rushed and unfinished. I like the fact that Kai was no simpering female miss, but an older woman who'd had kids and endured in a town raising daughters and knew her mind and was strong. She made a bargain and kept it, looking all the while for the best of her kids.

Maddaugh is no fool, a Dragon caught in this Earth zone with no way for his people to get back home, he knows a good thing when he sees it and the woman with fae daughters who could provide children and make his kind propperous again, he takes no prisoners and stuck his deal.

Obviously nothing is easy and with rumblings in his coal mines, flesh traders trying to get at Kai daughters and sons who are preening etc, this book was fun and fast, makes me want the second one as soon as.

This is a very enjoyable story.

I loved this strong woman and the way she has raised her three daughters even though they live in a time where only men were really respected. But when her daughter's life was in danger she faced it and went to the dragon lord which let him know that four women of marriage age with fae blood were living unknown to him in his lands. This is important because of the fae blood makes them good mates for his dragons, including him and his three sons. He strikes a deal with the mother in return for saving her youngest daughter. The dragons are very interested in these women but are also cautious because they all know how to defend themselves and always have weapons somewhere. They always try making them wait in protected areas, which never works.

I am ashamed to say that this book has sat in my kindle unlimited pile since January. The Mountain King is a story of a woman, Kai, who considers herself past her prime but is strong of will, pride, and family. Kai is placed in two very difficult spots. One that would make her life easier but with unknowns and another that would tear her family apart. The story is entertaining, has plenty of action, and a few sensual scenes. I would have rated the book 5 stars but I didn't care for the abrupt ending. I also felt that there were too many side stories left untouched or unfinished. Some areas of the book could have used more detail or storyline but hey it was still a decent book that had me reading every spare moment I could sneak it in.
