TL;DR This is one of my all-time favorite knitting reference books. Lots of useful information and quality photos and illustrations. Best of all, a physically sturdy book that's a joy to work with.
I picked this up from my local used book store almost at random, knowing nothing about it, and taught myself to knit from it. As I learned and developed my knitting, I always came back to it, and it's become one of my favorite knitting books. You can read it cover to cover or use it as a reference; it works well both ways. The illustrations and photos are large, clear, and instructive. The projects focus on illustrating concepts rather than the finished product, which I like for a book like this. It is by no means comprehensive, but it covers everything you could need for the basics and even a little ways beyond that. I find myself constantly coming back to this book for reference.
Real talk time. My favorite thing about this book is actually its physical construction, not the material inside. It's spiral/ring-bound, which means it lays flat with no issues. The pages are thick and sturdy, almost like cardstock, and the cover/binding is rock-solid. I feel like I could throw this book at a wall or out a second-story window and it wouldn't be much worse for wear. There's a chunk of blank lined "Notes" pages in the back, which is a lovely addition. My copy has two clear zipper pouches in the back, too; I don't know if that's standard, but I love it. The book is a great size as well; big enough that everything on the pages is crystal clear, but small enough that I can toss it in my bag when I need a reference to travel with me. The best of both worlds. Such a lovely book.
This is a handy little reference book to have on my shelf. As a beginning knitter, there are things I don't know and things I just haven't mastered yet (I have to keep looking up how to do the long-tail cast on). The book is only 128 pages and it's in a small, easily portable format. I really like the size of the book; I know that doesn't affect the contents but it's just so much easier to handle this book when I'm trying to work on a project and look something up at the same time. The downside is that the book does not open flat, so I'm always finding something to weigh down the pages while I work.
There are plenty of color photographs of yarn, accessories, and knitting textures, but the how-to instructions are clearly illustrated with the working yarn and ball yarn shown in different colors to help differentiate them.
The book includes three small projects (scarf, hat, and arm warmers) and a selection of stitch patterns, plus a few frequently asked questions. There are also sections on how to read patterns and charts, knitting with circular and double pointed needles, and working with specialty yarns.
This is (so far) my favorite reference book to help me with my knitting. The descriptions are written so that you can easily understand what they're talking about. The book also includes some super easy, super cute patterns to get you started.
Great knitting how-to book. More of a reference book but I read it straight through anyway because it is so informative. Comes with DVD which is very helpful as well!
