He is widely acknowledged as the inventor of the modern detective story and an innovator in the science fiction genre, but he made his living as America’s first great literary critic and theoretician. Just as the bizarre characters in Poe’s stories have captured the public imagination so too has Poe himself. He is seen as a morbid, mysterious figure lurking in the shadows of moonlit cemeteries or crumbling castles. This is the Poe of legend. But much of what we know about Poe is wrong, the product of a biography written by one of his enemies in an attempt to defame the author’s name.
The real Poe was born to traveling actors in Boston on January 19, 1809. Edgar was the second of three children. His other brother William Henry Leonard Poe would also become a poet before his early death, and Poe’s sister Rosalie Poe would grow up to teach penmanship at a Richmond girls’ school. Within three years of Poe’s birth both of his parents had died, and he was taken in by the wealthy tobacco merchant John Allan and his wife Frances Valentine Allan in Richmond, Virginia while Poe’s siblings went to live with other families. Mr. Allan would rear Poe to be a businessman and a Virginia gentleman, but Poe had dreams of being a writer in emulation of his childhood hero the British poet Lord Byron. Early poetic verses found written in a young Poe’s handwriting on the backs of Allan’s ledger sheets reveal how little interest Poe had in the tobacco business.

Ces trois nouvelles sont excellentes. Le livre audio est disponible gratuitement et vaut le coup.

Based on these short stories, Edgar All Poe is definitely not for me unfortunately (bare in mind I read the French translation).

مجموع هذه الأقاصيص تنحدر من قصيدة الغراب للشاعر ، مجموع الارتياب والشك واليأس لكن بنثر ساحر ، سحر آخر ليس كما بورخيس مثلا الممتلئ بالأهازيج والألوان والصخب لكنه سحر بارد ، ساكن ، غير ذي لون الا انه ذو تأثير عميق و عميق جداً .
من يفتتح بمقدمة بودلير الجميلة قد يتسائل عند الأقاصيص الاولى عن ما كان يعنيه بالفعل ، الا انه بعد ذلك يأسرك عالم ادغار ب"طريقة الدكتور طار والبروفسور قذر "،"قوة الكلام"،"الصندوق المستطيل"،"القلب الذي كشف السر"،وليم ويلسون" .

Un magnifique recueil, Edgar Allan Poe ne déçoit jamais. J'ai personnellement lu la traduction proposée par les éditions Gallimaster. Elle est bien mieux que celle de Baudelaire et je vous la conseil donc. Poe a inventé le roman policier à énigme, a écrit les premières nouvelles d'horreur (je me souviens avoir pensé à la franchise Saw en lisant Le Puit et Le Pendule) , il a tout fait et mérite d'etre bien plus lu.

Il eu une telle influence sur la culture populaire que je me devais de lire Edgar Allan Poe pour au moins connaitre quelques contes. J’ai bien aimé Le chat noir, La lettre volée, La chute de la Maison Usher et le Corbeau. Le niveau d’écriture est très élevé ce qui rend la lecture très difficile dans certaines histoires.

Ces six nouvelles distillent une atmosphère morbide et cruelle. Les notions de vengeance et de folie sont sous-jacentes. C’est assez spécial et le style n’est pas aisé.
Si je n’ai pas totalement adhéré à ces histoires, il faut reconnaître qu’elles font naître un certain sentiment d’horreur.

The stories were great, my only problem was with the language (old words I didn't understand).

Plaisir des retrouvailles avec ce chat noir, une lecture de collège il y a 23 ans. Moins convaincu par les autres.
