Rate this book
Darien the Executioner has been resting in the elven sanctuary of Kadanar, regaining his strength, and training his young apprentice. However, a long kept secret of the ancient elves will set Darien on a desperate quest. A second sword, the Star Blade, may hold the key to defeating the Demon King, but it has been lost. To find the sword, the former shade must journey to the stronghold of the Order of the Golden Shield, and either steal what he needs, or convince his old enemies to aid him. Darien must sort new allies from possible foes, while his suspicions threaten to drive away his few friends. The curse of the Demon’s Blade progresses, and pushes Darien further into despair while an old rival appears to destroy him. What terrible reflection will Darien see when he gazes into the void of his future?

I think a strong indication of my thoughts on this book would be that as soon as I finished it, I immediately purchased books 3 and 4! *Minimal spoilers/references below.*

I was happy to settle into this book, it had been started on my Kindle and shelved for a number of unrelated reasons. Once I started, I couldn't wait to keep reading. As with many 'middle' books there was a lot of travel and "in-between" movement to get the characters into position for, I assume, the 3rd and 4th books.

I continue to enjoy the characters and the additional development of the supporting cast in this book. I would liken this story to the epic fantasy fiction tales of the Lord of the Rings books. Your main character's inability to understand the emotions and actions of others from that perspective continues to drive the story forward in interesting ways.

I am most curious to see where things move in the next books as the hints to the possible relationships with Nia and Rana. I love the complex dynamics between the many characters and am excited for those new cast we will meet in the next books. Excited to keep moving in this series!

I am finding it hard to write a review on this single book when I have already read the one after in this series. I just couldn't be bothered to stop reading to write a review, I was enjoying the experience too much. I really enjoy the authors writing style and story line.
I love that the hero of the story is not the "bravest, strongest, win every battle and all the women want me" type that seem to fill many new fantasy writers books. As a matter of fact most people don't even like him. I love his confusion at the way other people behave, and his sometimes rudeness because of this. I like seeing his character change right in front of my eyes as he starts hanging out with more "normal" people and not the awfulness he was raised with. I like that he admits fear, and confusion, and his many wrong doings. That he doesn't win every battle by himself, often finding help in unexpected places. He even sometimes loses!
I will save the rest of my review for book 3 as I don't want to cause any spoilers here.
