The Doomsday Papers

Rate this book
It all started with a cough. No one knows who coughed, or where, but it changed everything. That cough did what Vladimir Putin and Bin Laden couldn’t do. It nearly exterminated the human population and toppled the invincible United States Government. It ruined me. Before the sickness, I was a meek, subservient woman. I was quiet and useful to my family, but I ate more than anyone else and I got the most thrashings. I was the unfortunate Dare girl. The fat one. That was before. The long journey, killing people and burning bodies, it all changed me. If only my family could see me now. They can't see me. They're dead. Dead and burned in the south field. Father used too much gasoline and the fire spread out of control. It burned acres of thirsty grapevines and almost took the barn. He cried over the grapes but not the two wives and fourteen children we cremated. Thinking about the dead makes me sad. Thinking about the food that I took for granted makes me sadder. Our ways kept us alive. Behind our walls, men can have six wives and father twenty children. The walls are high enough to keep strangers out and keep our secrets in. They were not high enough to keep out the sickness or wide enough to keep out death when it came to collect. The outsiders called us crazy. Uneducated. A cult. They all died. We didn’t just survive, we thrived. It was during this dark and tragic time that the most unusual thing happened. I found love in the most unexpected place. Me, the unfortunate one.

I need a minute to regroup!

review to come!

Some days later.....
When you cant predict the story line

Seriously this had me all up and around the corner in my feelings. I ended this story with a heavy heart. ooohhhhh the emotional ache I feel. I feel like I've been beaten down chil I'm just worn the heck out!

After reading one of her books you gotta go read something light and quick to get your mind right before you catch yourself thinking about these characters like they belong to you and suddenly find yourself washing dishes talking out loud to yourself about scenes in the book... yep I did that.
This was a tough one to read but I was so intrigued with this, didn't like some of what happen like the whole polygamy thing I cant imagine sharing my man girl Id kill a... Oh! I just remembered this one part where Dumani goes after one of the..... Ahhhh you gotta read don't want to spoil it for you man almost couldn't stop myself lol. The Author knows how to captivate you like a damn sparkling vampire. I could not look away and I wanted more.
This story centers around a cult type life with polygamy being the heart of it. Buuut then there is also a apocalyptic thing going on annnnnd lawd yes there's more a paranormal thing too.. Once again Ms. Jan Jan threw everything at me all at once with no time to breathe. My heart broke a million times for the Heroine Dumani she was strong woman also the Hero Judea he was in a tough position with the church even though I wanted to kill him in the middle of the book I understood his positions and oh he made my heart strings go nuts with his crazy in love for Dumani

Fav qoute “Don’t listen to those heathens.  What do they matter?  They don’t know us.  Look at them.  They’re lazy and worthless.  They don’t compare to you in any way, Dumani.  Stop walking with your head down.  I don’t care who is in the fucking room.  You look up and if you don’t know where to look after that, you look to me.  You are my wife.  Those bitches are sunburned and bitter.  They’re jealous of you.”
“Why would they be jealous of me?”
My hand reaches up and brushes my scar.  Jude shakes his head sadly.
“You are everything a man needs in a woman.”

This story takes you on a journey, a looooooong journey Dumani goes through it I tell you and grows as well She not only gets to have love she gets to grow in love. Don't get me started on the third Man she meets. This story... it rips through your chest throws your heart on the floor but it's puts it back again and I loved every minute of it. I love her writing style I cant imagine not liking anything she writes.

I loved this book! It’s different, weird, strange, funny, scary and terrifying and right up my alley. The Paranormal, the IR Romance and the hot sex scenes, the Sci-Fi. The apocalypse has never been as interest as it was portrayed in this book. One of the best books I’ve read in a long time. Couldn’t put it down. Duma was one of the strongest female characters I’ve read in a while. Mino and Judea sounded hot as hell. Don’t call me, don’t disturbed be, I’m reading, The Doomsday Papers was my mentality until I was finished this book. This one certainly goes on my re-read list.

This book took me trough a whole spectrum of emotions, and brought me to tears. This interesting and significant story is so moving, you can't help but root for Dumani. As she travels far and wide with her unexpected self discovery, she finds herself inexplicably far from home. And her love for Jude Hamilton so strong she always finds a way back. It is a love story, but a painful one that will have your heart breaking right alongside hers. This story does has such achingly sweet moments, it hurts much more when the bad ones come. Duma needed to find herself and who she truly was, without a man or the church to decide for her. After being raised in a cult of polygamists, emotionally and physically abused, her tender heart still found reason to love. Towards the middle of the book I was proud of her for standing up for herself and not lying complacent, after discovering a bit of the world after her previously shelter existence. She deserved more than empty words of love with no true devotion. Why couldn't Jude just keep every promise he made? He ran her away into the arms of other men! He just couldn't act right after he allowed the church and their beliefs to come between then. Finding out she's a witch the whole debacle of meeting Maximino, the vampire, was a bit of a shock, almost as if it wasn't the same storyline anymore. But after that rough patch I felt it blend more into the storyline when I figured they couldn't continue on like that. Overall, I love this story and the character development was astoundingly good, even of a little heart breaking had to happen. My favorite scenes will always be from the beginning, where all Jude and Duma had was each other.

THIS WAS A 5-STAR READ! As in, such a 5-star read that it almost makes me want to revisit some other books I've read and adjust the ratings accordingly.

Dumani was an incredibly sweet and intelligent girl but she was over worked and under appreciated by her family. She faces unbelievable levels of disrespect and verbal abuse at the hands of everyone, except her brother and his best friend. All of this lead to her growing up to be an emotionally immature and insecure. This story is basically her journey of loving, losing, living through her insecurities, and trying to find herself over and over again. There is a cool paranormal aspect that was greatly appreciated! It really turned the story on it's head.

This was just an emotional read for me. When she was happy I was happy with her and when she'd end up hurt I would be sobbing for her. I just loved it so much. I feel like words won't even do it justice. Even though it's 500+ pages I never wanted it to end. Definitely would recommend!

OMG OMG OMG, if I could give it ten stars I would!

This book was sooooooo good. I ran the gambit of emotions. I had to stop reading for awhile to give my heart a chance to recover from the adrenaline rush from reading certain scenes. The end of the book had me crying like a baby.

Jan Jan Untamed wrote an amazing story about apocalyptic end times and how a young couple and their community survived it. The Doomsday Papers was just that, Dumani Dare Hamilton's memoirs of her life and times of emotional growth during the viral epidemic. We see her character grow from a timid, shy, abused and over worked young woman into a very self aware sexual being who refused to share her husband Judea Hamilton with his two other wives he was forced marry. Being members of the Saints religious sect, similar to Mormons, the men were allowed to have as many wives they could take care of. The women were just used for men's comforts and procreation. After Duma returned from being forcibly researched on to find a cure for the virus for a year, she found out that Jude did not keep his vow to her. This caused her to make poor decisions and become involved with other people and discovering long held secrets to her life. Her life comes full circle where she is back to where she first began before the NY2 viral epidemic started. She also finds out that she is destined to repeat her mother's life only with a different outcome. My heart was overcome with joy that Dumani finally got her HEA with both of the men she loved

This story was long but very well done. It was an excellent plot that I hope I never see come to life. Good job Jan Jan.

Starting with the things I loved....there were a lot of hilarious moments, I loved how resilient Duma (FMC) was, and JanJan ALWAYS writes such interesting worlds. This story always kept me on the edge of my seat.

However, I often find myself getting frustrated with the FMCs in her stories because when it comes to the MMCs they are weak and clutching. Both MMCs were trash but at least the 1st got it together eventually and their love for each other was evident. The 2nd MMC (Maximino), I didn't really feel much connection or love between them at all, just sex and arguments. He talked to her like she was trash and treated her terribly....then suddenly he was in love. I just didn't believe the progression with how their story was written on the page.

I was happy that a FMC in a JanJan story finally got a fleshed out, well explained HEA.

Wtf did I just read?

I bought this book a while ago and I couldn't read it. It took me a month to do so. I finally got into it. I didn't read any reviews on it and yes, it bothered me that it was written in first person.

I'll just say I finished this book at work and now I'm an emotional mess. I read on my phone with the kindle app and I have taken a crap load of notes. I am a mess after reading this book.

Duma lives in a polygamist cult. This the only life she knows and she is also in love with a boy. The preacher's son. Duma's life changes when a virus starts to kill off humanity. There is so much shit in this book.

This is the walking dead mixed with a Western, mixed with HBO's big love and TLC's sister wives, with love and hip hop, and mixed with Queen Sugar, Charmed, mixed with Iyanla "fix my life". Along with true blood, maybe some twilight and blade.... Like N***a What did I just read?!?

There are side characters I'm still wondering about. Also, there wasn't much explanation on Duma's past and how that all fit in with her life. There were rushed elements to this book and like most 1st person stories, you often get lost on who is speaking in that moment. But yea, I'll read this author again but not for a while. This shit got me emotionally drained.

Signed by a hater of books written in first person.

I initially gave the work 5-stars...but decided after careful reflection that I needed to re-think the rating. I felt cheated when the theme of witches and vampires were incorporated into the plot. I felt cheated because I felt the author took the easy way out and didn't continue on the challenging path she set forth on with the main characters growth. It was too easy veer of into the supernatural plot, rather than let the story unravel and subsequently end...naturally. Also, one chapter in my kindle edition had numerous typos etc...not sure what that was about...but yeah, I would have loved the opportunity to experience Duma and Jude working their shit out...or not... without the supernatural aspects as a quick fix to save a plot that seemed to become too tedious to finish for the author.

Oh man, where do I start with this one? Yet another book where I can't understand some of what other reviewers have said about it... did they really read the same book as me? Based on the original premise, it could have been a fantastic tale, but the execution of this book was so bad that it was almost beyond belief. I'm someone who can forgive a small number of typos, grammatical anomalies, editing or any number of other problems in a text if the characters are compelling and the story interesting and believable and the plot exciting and complex, but even months down the line, there is still an unrelenting and indelible stain on my mind from reading this one book.

I have many criticisms of this book, but the worst ones are;
>The romanticism of a horribly abusive relationship - based on both words and actions, Jude was far from a man who loved his woman
> The overuse of the word slut by both the MC and others around her, the slut-shaming was like nothing I've ever witnessed before
> The neverending grammar/spelling/typos throughout the text
> The lack of editing - it read as if there was none
> The length - it was too long by far see; 'lack of editing' above
> The divergence of the PA storyline into paranormal about halfway through and the subsequent arc that followed. It was like two totally different books were randomly plonked together to flesh out the page count. Again, see; 'lack of editing' above
Sorry to all the lovers of this book and indeed the author as I take no joy in trashing anyone's hard work, but the only reason I finished it was because I kept reading in the same way you keep watching a movie that's an utter train wreck.

This year I've come to love post-apocalypse/dystopia fiction, and for many years I've loved paranormal fantasy fiction, and unlike many readers, I'm a strong supporter of indie authors and their works. This book, however, is in no way is a good representation of any of those, and is, in fact, a prime example of the sort of thing that gives indies a bad name. I shudder to think that even one single reader would think that this representative of all indie book and therefore declare to never pick one up ever again.

Wow this book just wow. I waited on writing this review because I needed to pull myself together. This book is intense and it pulls you in. Each page, chapter has you feeling like you need to find out what is going to happen. What that said I have never wanted to reach in to s book so bad to straighten out a few characters cuz oh man. Dumani is so innocent and naive I just want to wrap her up in a bubble an make everyone pay for hurting her. She also mad me want to shack her at time it was frustrating at time lol. Judea started off kind of okay then I just wanted to throat punch him towards the middle and end. He just broke my heart and poured salt all over it. We also meet Gavin and that is complicated. Then there is the vampire Maximino we meet him a little close to the end. He angered me, frustrated me with how he was. He had some sweet moment in there he was just alot. This book was quite a journey and I am glad I was in a good head space to talk it all in even when I was frustrated with the characters. The steamy scenes can either be sweet or intense or a little out of your comfort zone so be careful on that if this is not your thing. And on a side note when you finish this book find a sweet the romance book to reset your brain lol.

dude is there something wrong with me? 2023 has just been the year of DNFing. Left and right.
And not DNFing low-rated books, either (lookin at you Haunting Adeline). This has to be one of the highest-rated book I've ever attempted to read.
I just couldn't do it.
I couldn't handle how they treated Dumani. And I don't care if she grew out of it *eventually*. I went scrolling through some of the other reviews, and a couple other reviews appeared to suggest that she doesn't develop any more of a backbone. I just couldn't read any more of it. I got maybe 25% through? I know, I know, that's pretty early to DNF, but I've just been trudging through books recently. If I didn't like it at 25%, I probably won't like it at 50, or 75...
I was sick and tired of the slut-shaming, too.
I understand, yes, that's their rules, that's just how they are. Doesn't mean I have to read it, though.
I'm honestly very glad that most of you guys enjoyed this, because I've been in such a reading slump lately, so at least one of us is enjoying herself.
I wouldn't wish this reading slump on my worst enemy tbh

😈🆚😇

It's quite a story...Dumani is a sheltered girl growing up in a cult...only she doesn't know it..she's treated as a maid....lives in a barn....she endures senseless caning...is unloved by the very society she whom she toils for every waking moment...she treated as an outcast...and she's only favored when it comes to farming and hunting and fishing..well you get the picture...she however has a savior....the most revered boy...the most handsome...the most prized member of the cult...Judea....he is in love with her...but could not act on it....she wasn't the prettiest...or skinniest...or the first choice when it came time to choose wives...oh did I mention this was all going down during an apocalyptic world collapse...people dying off from a plague...death and destruction...and Judea and Dumani still manages to have hot hot sex...Dumani and Gavin having hot hot sex..Judea and his other wives having hot hot sex...Dumani finding out she's a witch and having hot hot sex....with a Vampire....

What a rollercoaster ride

This book was great had me in my feelings most if the book. All the pain that Dumani went through this whole book!!! Had me in tears most if the time but later in the book she had me mad with her selfishness when it came to being a mother how she left the baby then came back and left Jude and took the baby only to have just about anybody watch him while she go who're off somewhere. Now I know she was sheltered and all that and hadn't really loved her young life for herself but that was just to much to me. But I was rooting for her to get her stuff together so she could find true love. I was hoping her and Jude got back together that man loved her but I was mad at him through out the book as well but long story short this was a great book with your emotions all over the place. I have read from this author before and by far my all time favorite book to date is JACKS ARE WILD great book and she has done it again!! I look forward to more of your work keep up the good job.

Not what I expected. How many times have you seen those words about a book? Trust me I was taken by surprise at the paranormal twist, I was just fumbling along reading this book, thinking about the men in it, how they were either religious fanatics or horny men looking for females cause there was a shortage due to the "sickness" and wham, a vampire and Dumi, the over weight daughter of a man with some standing within the church, the one that was bought up in a sheltered religious cult, lived in a barn etc etc

Well, she's a witch.

It's a long read, I don't really know what to make of it. Dumi appeared to be subservient in the beginning, there were times where she looked like she was going to discard that, she did somewhat but not fully I guess. There is a lot of sex, anal sex and even a threesome and rape. I had a hard time connecting Dumi with some of the things she did and let herself be subject too. She suffered a lot, then appeared to make the wrong decisions.

Despite it having a epilogue, I wasn't satisfied

I’m beyond confused with the complete shift in story plot at around the 70% mark. It left like two entirely different plots smashed together! How did we get to vampire and witches from apocalypse death and polygamist cults?!

Aside from that, Duma’s profound personal growth was completely overshadowed by her need to be with a man that physically or verbally abused and/or repeatedly made her feel second best! The guys cheated on her and she’d get mad but be right back in bed with them a day later?! I was reading that last part of the book like…who is she going to pick? The lying wife-beating cheater, the kidnapping cheater, or the rapist???????? Like what the hell?

Plot twist in an apocalypse? Yes, please

Dumani out there living her life as a Saint; a tight-knit community where women walk 3ft behind the men and the men marry more than one woman. Yeahhhh it's a cult but not to her. This is home, life as she knows and sees it.

Duma is treated unfairly and unloved. She's depressed and adores the leaders son, Judea. Then it happens - a cough. After the 3rd day,  6 feet under. The world is no longer the same, and Duma changed with it. She is vocal, quick-witted, and no longer wants to be a few feet back and wants to be the only wife.
Judea loves Duma, but oh my gawd, his push backs and b.s.-ing. And Duma is right there calling him out on his b.s, disappointments, and questioning him - love that for her

So where does the plot twist come in?
Right when you least expect it, I'm gonna say somewhere between a traitor  meeting Duma to Duma cliff climbing and even then it didn't hit me until I put my Kindle down and said "oh,🤯😁!"

All around the world

This book makes me think of the Same Song by Digital Underground, because there were monsters no matter where Duma went. This book fitting with Janjans other stories basically you’re gonna go up meet some familiar faces then go left then stay straight for a little bit then do a 180 and then go to space then come back and transform. The how and the methods are extreme and often brutal but you want to know what’s next how does this wild ride end. Very good story, very imaginative, very creative, a good bit dark, but still really good. Don’t go reading this expecting a traditional story that’s what this isn’t so leave your expectations at the door and enter her world.

This Book!!!

So I read this book after reading several of JanJan Untamed’s books. ( my exact order: 1. View from the Bottom 2. Senserious 3. Butcher of Beaumont 4. The Magnificent Miss Broadway 5. Jacks are Wild 6. The Bastard & The Bird then Doomsday Papers). I’m not sure if there is a right order or wrong order to submerge into JanJan Untamed books but… they are always worth it!! This book made my heart want to explode. There was so much passion and detail to each character and storyline. Duma + Judea; Duma + Gavin; Duma + Maximino…. I love how each relationship was different and still significant in the development of Dumani Also, there is a cloud of death and the passing of time that adds to the atmosphere of the book. Absolutely Obsessed

OH MY GOSHHH!!!!

I had to set this book down at least 15 different times because of the twists and turns and people’s decisions were pissing me off to the high heavens!!! That was such a beautiful ending with such a beautiful redemption arc for the male protagonist. I love the happy, slightly bittersweet ending! She was killing me with her line of thinking and clingy esa but it was all in naivety so I gave her a pass. I envy the love she had at the end and I wish I could have it for myself. This is the reason I read novels like this. JanJan Untamed is a master in this line of work and I am so happy I came across this beautiful tale. I’ll forsurely be reading all of her other books!!!!

Great story, yet confusing

I really enjoyed the premise of the story. The heroine went through a lot abuse from her family, community, and church yet she never gave up on humanity and care for others. The story was flowing well until Texas... the heroine became this sex starved person whose only priority was to be sexually abused and used by a scientis, a vampire witch hunter and his friends?! I felt like i was reading two different books with two different genres. I really enjoyed Dumani and Judea ' s story and the way he always found a way to rescue and defend her unlike Maximo the vampire witch hunter.

Strange, but Good

There were so many times I wanted to put this book down and stop reading or just skip to the end. However I didn’t and I am glad I did not. Although Dumani started off weak and insecure, she grew into a fierce woman. The first storyline with Judea was great and intense. The second storyline with Mino was also the same. As I kept reading, I wasn’t sure if I cold leave this a good review, especially after the second storyline, but I am glad to leave it with a good review because Dumani certainly deserved her HEA. Lastly, the author’s transitions in some places were a little to short and confusing, for example, the introduction of Mino.

Another Hit

This book is something else. We start in a post-apocalyptic world and travel across what is left of the United States. This is an epic tale and it's why I love JanJan Untamed's writing. The story hits you in the feels. We go on an adventure and then, it takes a turn as soon as you think you've figured it out. And boy did this take a turn and send us out of the United States. I loved it. I loved everything about it. Don't pass it up and don't stop reading it. So good!

That was A JOURNEY THAT I DID NOT EXPECT

overall I think that the story and itself is extremely immersive and encapsulating... I was extremely invested in the characters and what they were doing and how they were acting... I will admit the story took some turns and dives that I did not know it was going to take and I was hoping for more resolve with some aspects of the story and some characters but overall I think it was a satisfying ending..... I did not expect that ending but I definitely am satisfied by it

This was the most complex and interesting books I have read in the years so far. I’m not one to feel strong emotions for a character but Dunami had me feeling a lot of things that I wasn’t expecting. I admit it I did kinda cry at the end of the book, that is pretty hard for me to do. I really hope the author continues with more stories like this because I became an instant fan. It was an amazing book. If I could give her more than five stars I would.

Oh Duma Dare!

Oh Duma Dare my Shero. I don’t recall every being this wonderfully traumatized by a book. Oh my word! I went through every single emotion in my arsenal. I felt her love, strength, pain and longing. I wanted to fight for her. I do wish she learned more about her history. But I will say it doesn’t take away from the story at all. This book is not for the weak at heart. I am so glad I read this book. Have an open mind and heart and read this book.

Mesmerizing

I found this author by accident and was intrigued. This was not the first book I have read, but I must say this one was a hell of a story. The emotions Duma brought out me..........I found Juni and Mino to be quite a bit more than astonishing! To find ur one true love, is a once in a lifetime type of thing, but to be blessed to find 2 is beyond any woman’s dream. Thank you for this story, I loved the cross over characters, u are now a part of my top ten authors.

The Doomsday Papers

I am not one for spoilers. I will say this...If you like books that take you on a journey, make you laugh and cry. Check out the Doomsday Papers. The heroin, Dumani Dare her story alone will make you cry. It seems she is shrouded in darkness and made to feel less than, seemingly stuck in a horrible circumstance. Life and time change many things for her and her family. Take a chance ride the wave, read the book!
