Born Roman Kacew (Yiddish: קצב, Russian: Кацев), Romain Gary grew up in Vilnius to a family of Lithuanian Jews. He changed his name to Romain Gary when he escaped occupied France to fight with Great Britain against Germany in WWII. His father, Arieh-Leib Kacew, abandoned his family in 1925 and remarried. From this time Gary was raised by his mother, Nina Owczinski. When he was fourteen, he and his mother moved to Nice, France. In his books and interviews, he presented many different versions of his father's origin, parents, occupation and childhood.
He later studied law, first in Aix-en-Provence and then in Paris. He learned to pilot an aircraft in the French Air Force in Salon-de-Provence and in Avord Air Base, near Bourges. Following the Nazi occupation of France in World War II, he fled to England and under Charles de Gaulle served with the Free French Forces in Europe and North Africa. As a pilot, he took part in over 25 successful offensives logging over 65 hours of air time.
He was greatly decorated for his bravery in the war, receiving many medals and honors.
After the war, he worked in the French diplomatic service and in 1945 published his first novel. He would become one of France's most popular and prolific writers, authoring more than thirty novels, essays and memoirs, some of which he wrote under the pseudonym of Émile Ajar. He also wrote one novel under the pseudonym of Fosco Sinibaldi and another as Shatan Bogat.
In 1952, he became secretary of the French Delegation to the United Nations in New York, and later in London (in 1955).
In 1956, he became Consul General of France in Los Angeles.
He is the only person to win the Prix Goncourt twice. This prize for French language literature is awarded only once to an author. Gary, who had already received the prize in 1956 for Les racines du ciel , published La vie devant soi under the pseudonym of Émile Ajar in 1975. The Académie Goncourt awarded the prize to the author of this book without knowing his real identity. A period of literary intrigue followed. Gary's little cousin Paul Pavlowitch posed as the author for a time. Gary later revealed the truth in his posthumous book Vie et mort d'Émile Ajar .
Gary's first wife was the British writer, journalist, and Vogue editor Lesley Blanch (author of The Wilder Shores of Love ). They married in 1944 and divorced in 1961. From 1962 to 1970, Gary was married to the American actress Jean Seberg, with whom he had a son, Alexandre Diego Gary.
He also co-wrote the screenplay for the motion picture, The Longest Day and co-wrote and directed the 1971 film Kill! , starring his now ex-wife Seberg.
Suffering from depression after Seberg's 1979 suicide, Gary died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on December 2, 1980 in Paris, France though he left a note which said specifically that his death had no relation with Seberg's suicide.

"Inseguire l'azzurro"
Normandia tra gli anni trenta e quaranta. Ludo orfano della grande guerra vive in un paesino con lo zio Ambroise Fleury. Postino per hobby, costruttore di aquiloni per vocazione. Immaginazione, memoria, purezza di sentimenti e un pizzico di follia sono le caratteristiche che contraddistinguono la famiglia Fleury.
Gli aquiloni il filo conduttore di questo romanzo tenero e delicato che parla di amore e di umanità, che non cade nella retorica dei buoni e dei cattivi ("l'odio si nutre di generalizzazioni"), che dipinge gli atteggiamenti anche più al limite come leciti, in funzione delle intenzioni che li sostengono.
Gli aquiloni, come gli ideali e i principi che conducono l'uomo, devono stare a una giusta distanza da terra. Se si lìbrano troppo in altro si disperdono, se volano rasente terra, si infangano.
Tanti i personaggi che incontriamo leggendo, tutti un po' sopra le righe, tutti ottimamente caratterizzati.
C'è Lila, l'amore della vita di Ludo, che si smarrirá cercando furiosamente se stessa, c'è Hans, l'antagonista di Ludo, leale e correttissimo pur facendo parte formalmente del gruppo dei cattivi, c'è il cuoco stellato che combatte per la Francia tenendo alto l'onore della sua nazione in cucina, c'è la mezzana Julie, concreta e astuta che, coi piedi ben saldi a terra, persegue i più nobili ideali, c'è il padre di Lila, che preferisce perdere il senno piuttosto che affrontare la decadenza dalla nobiltà, c'è Bruno, il pianista, che rinuncia all'arte per difendere la propria nazione.
Ci sono i partigiani, ci sono i nazisti, ci sono gli ebrei. Ci sono grandi gesta di resistenza compiute in ogni contesto e coi mezzi e le possibilità dei diversi personaggi. C'è la storia, raccontata attraverso gli accadimenti dellla gente comune. C'è la necessità di non perdere la propria ragione di vita. Ma soprattutto c'è tanta tanta umanità.
"Fintantoché non si riconoscerà che la disumanità è cosa umana, si resterà in una pietosa bugia"
C'è la necessità di smettere di rifare il passato, e di pensare, con l'aiuto degli aquiloni ben ancorati a terra, di costruire un futuro.
"Tu non sai cosa vuol dire amare veramente qualcuno. Non si perdona nulla per poi perdonare tutto"
Colpisce il fatto che Gary abbia scritto questo romanzo, così pieno di speranza, di tenerezza e immaginazione, e poco dopo abbia deciso di togliersi la vita.
Davvero una lettura incantevole.

6th book of 2022.
Gary is a major French writer of the 20th century that I'd never heard of. I only picked this up because these Penguin editions, slightly larger than paperback size, are so aesthetically pleasing. Gary himself was a writer, film director, and World War II aviator. He won the Prix Goncourt twice under two different names, the only writer to ever do so and he was married to actress Jean Seberg until 1970. The Kites (1980) was his final novel before his suicide by gunshot wound. Seberg had killed herself just the year before but in his suicide note, Gary claimed there was no relation, and also revealed himself as his other pen name, Émile Ajar. Whilst reading about him I also found out that Gary, on finding out that Seberg had an affair with Clint Eastwood, challenged him to a duel. Eastwood refused.
This novel starts brilliantly, a sort of Great Expectations blended with Proust. It has great warmth and humour. We are introduced to Ludo and his eccentric uncle who makes kites. Their family is plagued with infallible memory, almost to magical proportions. Ludo meets Lila and her rich family, and their lives become entwined. In 1939 the Second World War breaks out and France is thrown into conflict with Germany and Ludo and Lila are separated. The novel then loses that warmth and humour and becomes a homage to the French Resistance that Ludo becomes a part of. The chapters are incredibly short, most of them being only 3/4 pages long, but by the halfway point of this 300 page novel, I began to find them frustrating: the novel staggers along in a fractured sort of way with many short scenes and I never felt like I could really dig into it. That said, I did read the final hundred pages or so on a long train ride home this morning. Moments of sadness but mostly the novel is surprisingly hopeful despite it being Gary's last before his suicide. It is well-written and definitely worth reading, but the whole thing feels just slightly detached that dampened my overall enjoyment. It is, however, at the same time, a wonderful novel about love torn apart by war, distance, and how we can sustain ourselves with our memories of people even when they are absent.

-Attrezzatura per immaginazione-
Quattro anni fa iniziai a leggere il biglietto scaduto di Romain Gary con scarsa convinzione. Alla fine del primo capitolo ero già stato risucchiato dalla narrazione come non mi è più successo con nessuno degli altri suoi romanzi. Gli aquiloni è ben scritto ma il substrato favoleggiante, fantasioso, folle, ciò che deve esser piaciuto ai più, non posso dire di averlo apprezzato. Avete gradito la vita davanti a sé? Non perdete tempo, non state neppure ad aspettare il vento per far volare gli aquiloni. La promessa dell’alba vi è piaciuto? Questo romanzo stilisticamente li richiama entrambi, facendo suoi i difetti del primo e i pregi del secondo. Francia fine anni ’30, dallo scoppio della guerra alla sua conclusione: una storia d’amore per una ragazza intrecciata a quella per l’amore della patria occupata dai tedeschi. Se non avete mai letto Gary e decidete di farlo, portatevi sempre una matita appresso, è uno scrittore capace di sorprendervi in qualsiasi momento

Gli aquiloni è una favola, un inno alla speranza, alla tenacia, alla follia, alla passione è tutte queste cose insieme mentre là fuori imperversa la guerra e ce ne sarebbero di cose da raccontare che non fossero la passione di un cuoco per il proprio lavoro (e il proprio locale) e quella di un pacifista per gli aquiloni. Io non possiedo l’attrezzatura adatta per affrontare libri come questi, faccio fatica con la leggerezza sulla quale è stata passata una mano di poesia, faccio fatica con i sogni ad occhi aperti, poi però leggo una frase come questa
«Non vale la pena di vivere nulla che non sia un’opera d’immaginazione, sennò il mare sarebbe soltanto acqua salata…
e mi rammarico al punto che mi verrebbe da mettere -Attrezzatura per immaginazione- su un motore di ricerca per capire se la si possa acquistare.
Mi sono pesate le trecento pagine di questo libro, il pensiero che sarebbe stato lì ad attendermi non ha mai rappresentato un piacere, l’ho scolato come si fa con una birra ormai diventata tiepida, quando non si vuol lasciarla nel bicchiere.

One of the best books I have ever read. A love letter to humanity, love, and France. About war and peace. Gary's writing is beautiful, each sentence having it's own life. Recommended to anybody who enjoys reading, really.

"Zmeie de hârtie" este un roman de ficțiune istorică plasat pe fundalul celui de-al Doilea Război Mondial scris de Romain Gary, autor francez de origine evreiască.
Acțiunea cărții se derulează în Normandia, avându-l ca protagonist pe Ludo, un tânăr nepot al poștașului local și al producătorului de zmeie, Ambrose Fleury.
În timp ce Ludo învață arta fabricării zmeielor, o cunoaște și se îndrăgostește de Lila, fiica unui important om de afaceri, totodată reprezentant de vază al aristocrației poloneze.
Interesant este tonul scriiturii lui Gary, felul în care austeritatea vieții sub ocupația nazistă este "îndulcită" de acest unchi "nebun" care construieste zmeie și de un proprietar de restaurant pentru care spiritul nefericit al Franței este slăvit în bucătăria sa. În sine, ideea aceasta de activități și de momente de bucurie și desfătare culinară care pot lua gândul (chiar și pentru scurt timp) de la drama războiului, oferă romanului un aer suprarealist.
Cu totul, cititorul este angrenat într-o frumoasă poveste de dragoste, cunoaște acte de eroism, sesizează umorul, sarcasmul și ia parte la un final surprinzător de fericit.
Pe drept cuvânt, o lectură ce nu se uită ușor.

Un roman sublime de justesse. Une écriture sans fioriture mais remplie de poésie et d’évasion.
Ici point de manichéisme ou les Français sont les opprimés durant la guerre et les allemands les seuls oppresseurs. On trouve des gens qui vivent cette guerre chacun a leur façon: des ennemis qui se respectent (Von Tiele et Duprat), des hommes qui se haïssent (Ludo et Hans), des personnes qui combinent (la comtesse Hesterazy), d’autres qui résistent (Bruno, Tad) et ceux guidés par leur convictions (le facteur timbré Ambroise Fleury).
En fil conducteur tout du long de ce roman, l’amour que Ludo porte à Lila depuis ses 13ans. On passe aux travers des doutes, des espoirs, de la passion, de la fidélité et de l’abnégation d’un amour qui n’a pas de limite.
J’ai fini ce livre en me disant qu’il n’y a que peu d’auteurs capables de transcrire les sentiments avec tant de clarté, sans excès ou de pathos. Romain Gary a probablement avec ce dernier livre, donné sa version de la nature humaine. Sans illusions mais gardant une porte ouverte vers le merveilleux - comme un cerf-volant qui toucherait le bleu.

Cibo come veicolo di vicinanza, di convivialità e di amicizia anche tra nemici. Ludo è infine il resistente in amore e in guerra, schermato dalla follia quanto lo zio, è il partigiano francese, il simbolo dell’amore assoluto per la patria e per una donna.
È questo inoltre un romanzo sulla memoria, tutto giocato sulle straordinarie doti mnemoniche di Ludo/ Gary a dispetto di francesi che “cercano più di dimenticare che di ricordare”.
È anche un atto di riconciliazione estrema che salva il salvabile con pietà umana quando tutto ottunde, sbiadisce, vacilla, barcolla, cade e tradisce. Un inno alla follia idealista, quella capace di farti amare una donna, un ‘idea, il tuo paese, tramutandoli, quando sono prossimi alla realtà, in elementi finiti e imperfetti, senza che si realizzi l’agognata corrispondenza fra sogno e oggetto sognato.

E’ straordinaria la Bellezza che riesce a creare questo romanzo. In una Normandia improvvisamente devastata e violentata dall’invasione nazista del 1940 un ragazzino orfano di guerra (della Grande Guerra) e suo zio, un reduce di guerra “un po’ strano”, resistono alla barbarie non tanto con le armi e con la partecipazione alla rete clandestina della guerriglia gollista, ma soprattutto con l’amore, con la fantasia, con l’immaginazione, con la speranza, con la testarda cocciutaggine di chi non si arrende perché forse è un po’ folle, o forse ad essere folle è il mondo, e per cambiarlo bisogna saper trasformare la follia della violenza in quella dell’amore, della solidarietà, della speranza.
Il tono è quasi fiabesco, per certi versi mi ha ricordato “La vita è bella” di Benigni per l’approccio alla tematica dell’orrore. La violenza e la brutalità della guerra sono attutite- tanto da divenire quasi un sottofondo- da una visione carica di poesia, da uno sguardo che contrappone il Bello al brutto, da personaggi straordinari e tanto inverosimili quanto credibili, se si pensa che il nazismo e i suoi orrori sono davvero accaduti e a pensarci pare tuttavia impossibile: lo zio Ambroise sognatore, innocuo e pacifico costruttore di aquiloni, ma non di meno capace di trasformare il mondo; il cuoco Duprat che lotta, a modo proprio, per un mondo migliore grazie ai suoi squisiti manicaretti; la signora Julie che con la sua lucidità disillusa diventa visionaria essa stessa. E a tenere insieme tutte le vicende avventurose- surreali e fin troppo reali al tempo stesso- Lila, il primo grande amore di un ragazzino che diventerà un uomo senza perdere la magia di quel sentimento puro e fortissimo, che nella sua vita sa rimanere indelebile ed intatto.
E’ l’ultimo libro di Romain Gary. Si suiciderà pochi mesi dopo la pubblicazione. Alla luce di questo romanzo, della Bellezza, del senso di fratellanza universale e della poesia che esprime, pare impossibile. Ma a leggerlo bene il suo romanzo voleva dirci che nulla deve stupirci di più della misteriosa convergenza fra possibile ed impossibile in quello straordinario mistero che è l’animo umano.

И все пак това е роман за любов. Толкова силна и пронизваща, че изтласква дори войната постоянно на заден план. Тази любов, чийто отличителен бард за мен е точно Гари, само той умее да я описва с думи, които не нагарчат от сладост, а изразяват това, което обикновените хора копнеем да облечем в думи. Той умее да говори любовта – и ми се иска да вярвам, че и в своя живот е дишал тази любов по начина, по който я влага в своите герои. Погледнете Людо, момчето, което идва от семейство Фльори, които са дали живота си за родината, обременени с твърде силна историческа памет (“имат толкова добра памет, та неколцина от нашите са умрели от това”), който живее със своя чичо, мечтател и пацифист, създател на красиви хвърчила, чийто полет пронизва цялата книга.

This WWII historical fiction novel was written by a French novelist, diplomat, film director, and World War II aviator of Jewish origin. Romain Gary (born Roman Kacew ) also wrote under the pen name 'Emile Ajar and won the French Académie Goncourt award twice, once under his real name and once under the pen name Emile Ajar. He was a celebrated figure in French literature with many claims to fame. He was decorated for his bravery in the war, receiving many medals and honours, including Compagnon de la Libération and commander of the Légion d'honneur. His public persona also included having been married to American actress Jean Seberg.
"The Kites" is set in Normandy just prior to and during the second world war. The protagonist, Ludo, is the young nephew of the local postman and part-time kite maker, Ambrose Fleury . While the kites may appear to be dragon flies, or castles in the air, there is always a little political sass involved if one were to look with a critical eye. While young Ludo learns the art of kite making, he meets and falls in love with Lila, the daughter of a Polish aristocratic business tycoon. As it turns out, Ludo is far from alone in his quest for the favors of Lila.
Alongside Ludo's uncle is his near neighbor and (seeming) counterweight Marcellin Duprat, who runs the famed Clos Joli, a three-star restaurant. Many more semi-fantastical creatures fill the action, including Julie Espinoza, a madam whose bordello in Paris is the headquarters of the Resistance.
Beginning with rescuing downed aviators and then escorting them safely to Spain, all players became involved in various ways with the French Resistance.
While this was a very thoughtful and creative story, I confess to becoming lost in what may have been French nuance and questionable translation. This book was originally copyrighted in French in 1980 and only translated and published in English in 2017. I would be eager to read whether other non-French Goodreaders also had this difficulty. The author was tremendously gifted, but I felt that I missed a lot.
After reading "The Kites", I became interested in reading more about the incredible life of Romain (Kacew) Gary. Gary committed suicide in 1980 after publishing this book.

3.5 stars. It usually takes me a while to get into a book, so I’ll take it as a good sign that I loved this one right away. I was absolutely taken with the first third—the Bronicki’s chateau, Ludo’s excess of memory, the complexity of first love, the faint beginnings of war; characters who sit around doing nothing but eating strawberries and drinking champagne. The characters were all fabulous, and the writing is wonderfully dreamlike. I’ve suddenly never wanted to visit Southern France more. However, the tender romance between Lila and Ludo was without a doubt, my favourite part of the book. Lila’s character, especially, was a beautifully written one, and I found her dream of establishing herself in history quite moving.
Unfortunately, the middle was an incoherent mess; the resistance scenes didn’t really capture my attention, and I lost interest for a while because I felt like the narrative was all over the place. The lack of weight given to certain events in the book also bothered me slightly (ahem, Ambrose's deportation). However, the lose threads do tie up eventually, and the ending was everything I could've wanted. Lila, my beloved!

One of the best books I have ever read.

«Non ha funzionato perché non l'ho mai incontrata. Ce l'avevo chiara in testa, l'ho vista tutti i giorni nella mia testa per trent'anni, ma non l'ho mai trovata. Certe volte l'immaginazione ti fa proprio degli scherzi da prete.»
Bellissimo romanzo sulla resistenza in Francia, ironico, poetico, saggio, e molto romantico (nel senso buono) com'è sempre Gary. Gli ingredienti: un'infanzia solitaria in una Normandia fiabesca, un indimenticabile zio postino e artista, lo chef di un famoso ristorante che identifica la grande civiltà francese con l'haute cousine, una maitresse ebrea decisa a sopravvivere grandiosamente, poi la lunga notte buia dell'occupazione nazista. E per condimento, certe frasi come solo lui sa.

След модернистичните напъни на Сири Хуствет за мен беше истинско удоволствие да се потопя в класическия стил на Гари. Увлекателен сюжет, колоритни герои, психологически плътно изграден протагонист, напоителни описания на Нормандия, френската кухня и много други неща. На места имаше неловки пасажи – неловки откъм стил, но подозирам, че за това са отговорни преводачът и (липсващият) редактор. За правописните грешки със сигурност не е виновен Гари. Корицата също е потресаваща. Направо ми се струва невероятно, че след като през 80-те излизаха толкова качествени книги, през 90-те се е получил такъв срив.

Va bene: è una favola, con tutti gli ingredienti giusti: l’orfano, la perdita, la formazione, la femmina, l’aiutante… anche con la morale finale. Lo so che con Gary molti storcono il naso, eppure io, da quando ho conosciuto la sua biografia, con lui so di essere imparziale: gli perdono tutto. Il suo grande amore per la Francia, che l’ha accolto insieme a sua madre, ebreo fuggiasco da un destino segnato, il suo credo nella possibilità dei più umili di diventare eroi, la sua stima nelle donne popolane e anche un po’ baldracche, la sua sviscerata passione per De Gaulle. Ci trovate tutto qua dentro, e anche un pizzico di follia, che forse è il sale della vita.
E come ogni favola finisce bene, nonostante il mondo a pezzi tutto intorno. Non è il suo capolavoro, ma la sua scrittura mi solleva il morale, mi regala giorni sereni nell'attesa che tutti i pezzi si ricompongano in ordine come un puzzle che so andrà alla fine a posto nonostante le difficoltà.
E’ da tempo che mi ha abbandonato qualsiasi traccia di odio per i tedeschi. E se il nazismo non fosse una mostruosità disumana? Se fosse umano? Se fosse una confessione, una verità nascosta, rimossa, camuffata, negata, acquattata in fondo a noi stessi, ma che finisce sempre per tirar fuori? I tedeschi, si, certo, i tedeschi… Adesso tocca a loro, nella storia, tutto qui. Si vedrà dopo la guerra, una volta che la Germania sarà sconfitta e il nazismo si sarà dileguato o nascosto, se altri popoli, in Europa, In Asia, In AFRICA, IN America, non verranno a dargli il cambio”.

L'histoire de Ludo, le neveu d'un facteur normand fabricant de cerfs-volants et de Lila, jeune aristocrate polonaise en quête d'avenir.
D'abord une histoire d'amour impossible sous l'occupation, Les cerfs-volants ne manque ni de gravité, ni d'humour. Il offre une série de variations sur le thème de la mémoire, individuelle et collective, avec ce qu'elle suppose de souvenir, de réinvention et de choix.
Les personnages, avec leur caractère bien à eux, sont vite attachants. Ambroise Fleury, Le cuisinier Marcellin Duprat, Madame Julie, Hans von Schwede, la famille Bronicki,... Pour simples qu'ils se donnent, on voit qu'ils portent tous leurs contradictions et que Romain Gary n'a pas privé ces cerfs-volants-là de la poursuite du bleu non plus.
Le style est efficace, Romain Gary a une voix très reconnaissable, proche, voire très proche de celle du narrateur de La promesse de l'aube par endroits. J'aurais peut-être aimé moins de passages rétrospectifs/proleptiques, mais ça fait naturellement partie du sujet qu'il se donne.

La guerra separerà i due giovani. Conosceremo personaggi singolari, odiosi o accattivanti, ma ci accorgeremo presto della difficoltà di classificarli secondo le categorie dei buoni o dei cattivi, o attribuire senza fallo colpe e meriti, siano essi individuali o collettivi.
Assisteremo a gesti di solidarietà o di lealtà sia tra amici che tra ‘nemici’; facile andare col pensiero a Stevenson o Vercors. Sullo sfondo, l'occupazione nazista e la Résistance.
Sopra a tutti e tutto, voleranno gli aquiloni, a ricordarci la necessità di ‘volare alto’, credendo nei propri ideali, non dimenticando il potere dell’immaginazione e del sogno.
Ho letto che il filosofo Todorov (1939-2017), nel suo Memoria del male, tentazione del bene, accosta Gary a figure esemplari di scrittori e intellettuali come lo scrittore sovietico Vasilij Grossman (1905-1964; perseguitato dal regime comunista per le sue critiche alla persecuzione degli ebrei a cavallo degli anni ‘50) o la scrittrice e giornalista tedesca Margarete Neumann (1901-1989, attivista comunista, imprigionata sia in un gulag che in un lager), o Primo Levi (1919- 1987).
Gary conclude il libro citando ancora una volta Le Chambon-sur-Lignon, il paesino dell'Alta Loira (dove Ambroise si reca a far volare i suoi aquiloni) noto per l'eroismo dei suoi abitanti che salvarono almeno tremila ebrei dalla deportazione nazista. Nel ’90, quei cittadini sono stati riconosciuti Giusti tra le nazioni.
Pochi mesi dopo aver pubblicato questo libro, Gary indossò la sua vestaglia rossa nella sua casa parigina e si sparò un colpo in testa.

Завдання автора історичного роману, особливо якщо історичне тло - це війна, - перед тим, як кинути героїв на поталу коліщатам історії, познайомити нас з ними, зачепити нас їхніми характерами або вчинками, щоб ми не тямили себе від хвилювання, слідкуючи за їхньою долею. Як на мене, це автору не дуже вдалося. Принаймні як тільки головна героїня на певний час зникла з горизонту оповіді, то читати одразу стало легше. А от дядько головного героя Амбруаз чіпляє, турбує - пробуджує в тобі емоції.
Після “Солов’я” Крістін Генни це другий роман про окупації Франції в часи Другої Світової, в якому учасники руху опору шукали збитих британських пілотів і допомагали їм перейти Піренеї і повернутися додому. В “наших краях” я про таке не чула.
До речі, чим більше читаєш літературу про передвоєнний період у різних європейських країнах, тим більше кидається у вічі, що над людьми тоді тяжіло відчуття можливого повторення війни. Вони передчували її. А потім згадуєш розповіді про те, як несподівано розпочалася війна для СРСР (ну, ще й те, що це сталося 1941 року, звичайно).
До речі, переклад мені не зайшов. Речення, особливо на початку дуже костурбаті, а всілякі “кухонні блузи” і “нам наказали нічого не нехтувати” тільки підсилюють невдоволення.

Il libraio della Lovat mi aveva chiesto di scrivere una fascetta-recensione da esporre ( onore immeritato) avevo scritto questo:
Le idee in cui crediamo sono ciò che ci tiene in vita, ma dobbiamo essere cauti: se vanno troppo in alto, si perdono; se toccano terra si infrangono, come gli aquiloni, quindi, puntiamo verso l’azzurro, ma restiamo legati a terra con un cordino, come essi ; alla fine, comunque, la speranza e la memoria verranno ripagate.
Gary ci invita a diffidare di chi pensa di essere dalla parte del giusto, ognuno di noi potrebbe essere "il nemico". La guerra insegna che “il lato disumano fa parte dell'umano” e i vincitori non possono dirsi immuni dal commettere ingiustizie.

Спочатку мені було смертельно нудно і здавалося, що я вже читала/бачила таку історію разів зо п'ять мінімум. Потім стало набагато цікавіше, коли почалася частина про окупацію Франції нацистами та їхній рух опору. Але вже десь в останній третині у автора стало з'являтися надто багато роздумів про те, що може німці не такі вже й винуваті, просто це їхня черга в історії бути монстрами, а загалом така жорстокість - це дуже людське явище, тому в майбутньому монстрами стане хтось інший. І що тут скажеш, частково він виявився правий, але мене страшенно бісить оця інфантильність, ніби геноцидити інших це якась естафета, яку людство передає одне одному впродовж всього свого існування. І це, на жаль, також трохи правда і автор ніби як і натякає, що може нам варто перестати так робити, але мене бісить це перекладання провини і розмальовування всіх одними фарбами. Я розумію, що він хочу сказати і навіть бачу в його словах зерно раціоналізму. Так, кожен може стати монстром за відповідних обставин і це цікава тема на яку можна довго дискутувати, але, можливо, давайте все-таки засудимо трохи реальних людей, які дійсно ними стали, а не будемо думати про якісь гіпотетичні ситуації в намаганні виправдати чиїсь реальні криваві злочини.
Ще бісило як тут французи в десна лупилися з нацистами буквально на кожному кроці. Оця історія про дружбу французького шеф-кухаря та німецького генерала мала мене зворушити? Показати, що навіть за таких обставин люди можуть бачити одне в одному в першу чергу людей, а не ворогів? Що цей німецький генерал, руки якого по лікоть в крові не такий вже й поганий, бо він Гітлера ніколи не підтримував, а просто виконував наказ і чекав поки хтось цього ж Гітлера хтось прибере? ІДІТЬ НАХУЙ
І загалом весь час мене не покидало відчуття вищості автора над ситуацією. Персонажі стільки розводилися про збереження духу Франції, її культури і бла, бла, а німці їм підспівували, що немає Німеччини без Франції, що вони одне одного доповнюють, що з німецькою силою та французькою культурою вони ого-го як запанують над світом. І мене нудило від цих розмов, бо я відчувала себе цією другосортною людиною, яку б в оцю конфігурацію ніколи не включили. Як я можу співчувати окупації Франції, якщо німці весь час сприймали їх за рівних собі. Вибач, французе, але ти не знаєш, що таке, коли твою культуру намагаються знищити, тому мені якось байдуже до твоїх намагань її зберегти, обслуговуючи нацистів по вищому розряду в ресторані французької кухні.

Am ales cartea lui Romain Gary pentru această perioadă dintr-un motiv care are legătură cu ceea ce ni se întâmplă acum, aici și peste tot, în războiul mondial pe care-l ducem împotriva unui inamic nevăzut. Am găsit în cartea acestui formidabil scriitor răspunsuri la multe dintre întrebările care ne tulbură în ultima vreme. Întrebări despre soartă, despre viață și moarte, despre răspunderea individuală și colectivă, despre curaj și imbecilitate și despre puterile iubirii în vreme de război.
Las aici și un citat care mi-a plăcut mult, mult:
”— Nimic ce nu este mai întâi o operă de imaginaţie nu merită chinul de a fi trăit, căci altfel marea nu ar mai fi decât apă sărată… Uite, eu, de exemplu, de cincizeci de ani nu am încetat niciodată să-mi inventez soţia. Nici măcar nu am lăsat-o să îmbătrânească. Ea probabil că este plină de defecte pe care le-am transformat în calităţi. Iar eu, eu sunt în ochii ei un om extraordinar. Ea n-a încetat niciodată să mă inventeze, de asemenea. În cincizeci de ani de viaţă comună, înveţi într-adevăr să nu te vezi, să te inventezi şi să te reinventezi cu fiecare zi care trece. Роман за лудостта, човешкото с неговата нечовечност и любовта, разбира се. Започва плавно, леко неангажиращо дори и докато се усетиш, си потънал в една дълбоко изстрадана история, където всяка дума вълнува. Както и "Животът пред теб", така и "Хвърчилата" не подлежат на описание - това е някакъв друг вид литература - сетивна и твърде лична.
Тази книга задължително трябва да се преиздаде във вид, достоен за съдържанието ѝ. Това издание е подигравка. Абсолютно нелепа корица и множество печатни /правописни грешки.

Ce roman de Romain Gary, publié en 1980 soit l'année même de son suicide, est pour moi l'un des meilleurs de son auteur avec les Racines du Ciel(1956) qui est travaillé du reste par les mêmes interrogations. C'est aussi l'une des plus belles histoires de passion que j'ai pu lire.
On y suit les amours contrariés de Ludo, jeune normand à la mémoire exceptionnelle et de Lila, tout aussi jeune polonaise blonde comme les blés sur fond de Seconde Guerre Mondiale. Mais il y a aussi bien d'autres personnages, comme l'oncle de Ludo qui fabrique des cerfs-volants et les fait voler haut dans le ciel, comme un espoir fou face à la violence de l'Homme.
L'écriture est terriblement efficace, elle donne à voir et à sentir sans en faire trop, elle est élégante et toujours très plaisante quoi que classique. Les personnages se révèlent au fur et à mesure du roman et sont profonds et attachants( on rencontre un cuisinier patriote et une mère maquerelle exemplaires à ce titre:) Citons aussi car ils sont très importants un personnage de pianiste mélancolique nommé Bruno et un anarchiste à l'ironie aiguisée, Tad.
C'est un magnifique texte sur la mémoire, l'amour, la fidélité à des idéaux qui nous dépassent et sur l'espoir en temps de crise symbolisé par les cerfs-volants du titre. Un très bon roman à découvrir où a relire ! :)

I never really got into it. Can't put the finger on the reason why, but I can say that I didn't enjoyed the writing style and just waited the book to be over. Disappointing.
