Flash Point, the first instalment in the adult urban fantasy series Nite Fire by C. L. Schneider wonderfully enmeshes and plays with the elements of action, adventure, deception, love and obsession. It has crime, mystery, suspense; Oh! and Dragons of course!
*Plot/Development: Flash Point, starts with Dahlia Nite fleeing the parallel world of dragons, her homeland - Drimera to escape a death sentence. She is half human half dragon – a lyrriken, who finds her shelter in the human realm. The story then advances to Sentinel City 97 years later. She now has dedicated her life to the protection of the human race as an expression of gratitude for providing her shelter.
But some mysterious and gruesome murders are happening in the town. Bodies are piling up. And Dahlia knows that none but the shape-shifters are responsible for these. What she doesn’t know is: Why? The chase begins as she gets more involved in the case and as she finds out that it leads to the world where she sweared not to return ever again.
It is a great combination of a murder mystery with dragons in it!
The plot constantly keeps you guessing. And the mystery that unfolds is unpredictable and smart. The action is very entertaining and the suspense completely pulls you in. It totally lives up to the ‘Urban Fantasy’ tag that is very hard to hit.
*Characters: The author has introduced many characters in the story and has done a great job shaping their personalities. To follow each of them grow with the story was really amazing and sometimes quite surprising. Some of the characters were developed in the story while some awaits to be developed in the next.
Also the kick-ass strong female protagonist along with some other terribly strong female characters gets Nite Fire some brownie points.
*Ending: The ending doesn’t leave you on a cliff-hanger but certainly has open ends that are to be resolved and answered in the next part that follows. So the ending leaves you, both satisfied and curious. You’ll no doubt want to know more about this world – about Drimera, and the politics that transpires.
*Writing: It is well-written and tight. It was very easy to get lost in the story with so such going on and so many characters, but Schneider with her impressive writing skills keeps it all together.
So, this was indeed a thrilling ride full of action and chase. I give it a solid 4.5 stars.
