Death is dreadful. We should be able to conquer it. Death has unsubstantiated me. Yes, I will take revenge! I will conquer death! I know the language of being alone. Niramayee lifted the holy book. She joined her hands to show her gratitude. The very same moment, the thunder struck the skies above, there was lightening; the thunderbolt fell exactly on Pandit`s mansion. The mansion shattered just for a moment and then the very next moment the ceiling collapsed. Huge cracks developed between the adjoining walls. The huge iron bar over Niramayee`s head came out of its place, and started its descent. Niramayee was scared to death. She lost her senses, she forgot to save herself by moving to one side. She watched her death in the form of the iron bar with huge astonishment. Yes, she had teased death by setting her mind to read the holy book and now death was approaching her slowly. Matkari`s stories fascinate the mind. They are supernatural, cryptic, yet they have a touch of beauty, passion. He succeeds in projecting the depth and meaningfulness of the mind
Matkari's first work, the one-act play Wedi Manase,was presented in 1955 on All India Radio in Mumbai.His play Pahuni was presented the next year at another venue.
Matkari worked as a columnist for newspapers and magazines in the 1970s. He wrote the column Soneri Savalya n Apale Mahanagar for four years.
Matkari's 98 works thus far include 33 plays, 8 collections of his one-act plays, 18 books of his short stories, 3 novels, a book of poems for children, and 14 plays and three collections of plays for children.His works include Gudha Katha --mysteries—for adults which maintain realism.Matkari wrote a few plays in Indian languages other than Marathi.Many of Matkari's novellas have been adapted for the stage.
गूढकथांना वास्तववादाची जोड देणारे लेखक म्हणून रत्नाकर मतकरींची ख्याती!
त्यांचं हे, मी वाचायला घेतलेलं पहिलंच पुस्तक. सोळा गूढकथांचा हा कथासंग्रह साधारण दोनशे पानी असावा. (मी किंडल आवृत्ती वाचल्याने त्यात पुस्तकासंबंधी बऱ्याच तपशीलांचा अभाव आहे. आवृत्त्यांबद्दलची माहिती नाही, मुखपृष्ठाचीही नाही…)
पुस्तकाच्या शीर्षक कथेने, अर्थात मृत्युंजयीने कथांची सुरूवात होते. सर्व कथांमधील सर्व पात्रं आणि त्यांच्या अवतीभवतीची वातावरणनिर्मिती मोजक्याच, पण तितक्याच प्रभावी शब्दांत करण्याचं लेखकाचं कसब कौतुकास्पद आहे. पहिल्या तीनही कथा चांगल्या जमून आल्या आहेत असं म्हणायला हरकत नाही.
पण चौथ्या कथेपासून पुढील सात कथांनी माझी निराशा केली. या कथा खूपच औदासीन्य आणणाऱ्या आहेत. यातील “किडे” ही कथा तर वाचलीच का असा प्रश्न पडला. ( वाचकांसाठी सूचना-: या कथेत बलात्कारी माणसाची मनोवृत्ती दाखवून देताना लेखकानं तो प्रसंगही विस्तृत नसला, तरी लिहीला आहे, आणि अशा कथा तुम्हाला अस्वस्थ करू शकतात. मला तर ती कथा मुळीच आवडली नाही.) त्यापुढील साधारण सर्वच कथा ( जंगल, हुशारी, टोक-टोक पक्षी, डायरी, प्रियकर, कर्ता-करविता, दु:स्वप्न, रूळ, निरोप, धुके-धुके ) एक प्रकारचा नकारात्मक प्रभाव टाकत वाचकाला सुन्न करतात. बहुधा या प्रत्येक कथेचा शेवट या नकारात्मकतेचं कारण असावं.. उदाहरणार्थ “निरोप” या कथेत आयुष्यभराच्या साथीपेक्षा ( तेही अगदी निरपेक्ष म्हणण्या इतपत ), महिन्याभराच्या जवळीकीला ( या जवळीकीला “प्रेम” म्हटलंय! ) एका अर्थी श्रेष्ठ ठरवलंय!
संपूर्ण पुस्तकातील मृत्युंजयी- भक्ष्य - थांब, मी आलोच! - शिंपल्यातील चांदणी - चमकत्या डोळ्यांचा मुलगा या पाचच कथा मला त्यातल्या त्यात चांगल्या वाटल्या. इतर कथांपेक्षा थोड्या वेगळ्या आहेत या कथा. पण या पाच कथांसाठी उरलेल्या अकरा कथा वाचण्याची शिफारस, मी करू शकत नाही…😐
Didn't feel as powerful as Khekda or Antarbahya, but had some mind-boggling stories. Shimplyatil Chandni & Nirop were my favourite two from the collection.
Ratnakar Matkari Sir's fan. I have read Sidney sheldon, Agatha christie's books, but his books are beyond that.May be it's because these books in my mother tongue.
I have read most books of him. And I like to read every story that he has crafted. Even simple story he has written it in a way that normal person like me can see those things in front of eyes, like it's happening there. What a great Author.
