Avalon wakes up from a 100 year old cryosleep in a new habitat with few memories and lots of questions. At first, HOPE (Humanity's One Plan for Escape) habitat appears to be a well-oiled machine, preparing 5,000 carefully chosen inhabitants for a new Earth. However, a medical assistant named Ilium reveals that certain members of the habitat have been falling ill from a mysterious virus they were inoculated against. Soon, HOPE habitat's tranquil illusion is shattered as Avalon plays a perplexing message left by her father. If Avalon is to survive this dangerous new environment , she will have to find the strength to navigate a habitat enveloped in secrets.
Nicole Stark is the author of the After Impact series. Her obsession with literature began at the age of four and she completed her first fanfiction at the age of seven. Nicole graduated with a degree in English and can often be spotted reading, baking, or binge-watching The Walking Dead on Netflix.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Avalon is the protagonist of this story, .She has been placed under a cryogenic sleep for 100 years since the land was threatened by an asteroid. She is the daughter of the man who create (Humanity's One Plan for Escape)HOPE ... which is where she and some 5,000 young adults were sent to be saved and to continue with the future of the human race ...
But the things going stranger after she see a message by his father was put on his collar , where he warns that strange things may be happening in the Habitat and be careful about who you trust ...
I am not a person who is caught easily by science fiction is a genre that even I find it somewhat difficult.
But I can say I've enjoyed has been a quick read and not heavy at all . I failed to connect with the characters.
Even though if I like a lot of Ilium (is a very sweet and intelligent character).
But the story is very good, I can even say that has left me with the desire to continue to the next
I did not feel like to put more stars, it's beacuse my problem with the characters and my lack of connection with them and maybe in some parts I felt a bit lost by quick history and some dialogues that have seemed somewhat disconnected ...
Undoubtedly as a book debut was good I liked Nicole's writing and appreciation , the story is compelling and with a few doses of action and mystery that can not miss :)
*Thanks again to the author for sending me a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.*
"And she closed her eyes, completely unaware someone else was watching."
After Impact is a book you'll most probably like if you're looking for a mixture of a dystopian novel and a bit of a thriller. The story revolves around Avalon, a girl that just woke up after having been in a cyrosleep for 100 years because the world was threatened by an asteroid and is now uninhabitable. So Avalon was put in habitat along with 5000 other young people to continue the human race once life out in the real world is possible again. Life in the habitat though isn't as safe as you would expect it to be.
I personally have to say that I really liked the general idea of this book and feel like the plot has a lot of potential. It's gripping at most times and once you've gotten into the book, you also want to know how things will continue. But even though the plot is good and also well developed, I had a few problems with the writing style and the way this book was edited.
In my opinion the writing could've been a little more polished. While reading, the sentences just felt a little "choppy" sometimes and I didn't feel like I really "got into the flow" and was able to just keep reading without being bothered by anything regarding the way this book was written. Then there was also the problem I had with the beginning of sentences being extremely repetitive. Back in elementary school I was taught to never start sentences with the same word several times in a row; but this was done quite often in this book even though I feel like it got better the further you got into it. The same goes for my "favorite word": said. I don't have a problem with it being used; if people say something you can say that they said something. But I'm a big fan of authors who try using synonyms for said to make sure that they don't use it all the time. Unfortunately this wasn't done in this book and especially at the beginning there were a couple of conversations during which said was used so often, I just couldn't ignore it anymore. Those are all things that could've been taken care of during the editing process along with the spelling mistakes and grammatical errors that unfortunately interrupted my reading quite a few times.
All in all though I liked the plot and think this idea could have great potential if it was only polished a little more. So I'm deducting 2 stars for the problems I had with the writing and still give "After Impact" 3 out of 5 stars!
People (five thousand) will be chosen to go deep on the mountain and to be put in “Cryochambers” for hibernation as last hope for humanity.
They will be awakened after hundred years and start all over.
All chosen are between 18-25 years old except President, of corse. Maine heroine is the daughter of the men who discover a comet and make all this possible. She is super smart (Or so we told?). It seems we have two love interest. The first one is a doctor and the seconds one is the son of the President. I don’t felt any connection between either one of them and heroine, but she does and chose her favourite.
You see, a thousand years in the future we also still have a class difference. Accipios - elite Fulcios - intellectuals (mid class) Compatios - common workers (lower class citizens)
And everybody knows they place. (Or they should!) Punishments aren't strange things in this new world.
“If you commit three strikes, you get expelled from the habitat.” “Getting expelled from the habitat would be disastrous. The oceans were believed to have evaporated due to the asteroid impact, and the new atmosphere was practically non-existent. The temperature would be too cold outside to support human life.”
Of corse, our heroine doesn't want to accept this. She also thinks something is off and plane to find out what's going on.
Her father let her secret message not to trust anybody,
… but he didn’t mean this two pretty boys, right??? I trust them! (try first with you finger then your life girl)
Then you have all sorts of science fiction, apocalyptic, mystery, action and romance mix. Sometimes, it's little too much. I love some stuff, not so much the others. It's interesting but sometimes writing it seems cold, distant. Almost as an author don’t use emotion only facts. There is a good story, little similar to series “The 100” (I didn’t read the book), and some other dystopian YA but with some fresh ideas. With all that said, somehow, it's still missing something. To me, this book is like the draft version which needs to be polished, beautify, and make more accessible and better for reading.
And then, at the end
***I received a copy of this book for free from the author in exchange for an honest review.***
*I received a RaR copy in exchange for an honest review* Ok. Where do I begin? So. It took me awhile to get into the story. It was told to me that it was a rough draft, so I ignored any spelling or grammar errors. Besides, those do not really take away from the plot of the story. I feel a book, especially in its beginning, can be rough and still be a good book. So I ignored those and continued to read. I liked the concept: an asteroid has taken out the Earth's population, except for 5000 chosen to live in stasis for 100 years underground. The HOPE habitat is filled with the elite, and they survived the radiation contamination from outside by living in the habitat. Avalon, the main character, awakens early, only to find that her father has hidden a message (he wasn't chosen to go) warning her to not trust anyone around her. People go missing, and a virus starts to spread. Throughout this, she falls for Ilium, a doctor in the habitat, as well as the President's son. That's the gist of the main plot. I had a hard time getting into the story because of the wooden dialogue. Sometimes the author had the characters speak in a conversational tone, which one would expect, but then suddenly it would shift to a very formal tone (I.e. "I am sorry son, but I simply cannot do that," or "Look at me, or I will make you look at me."). In those instances, the dialogue was stiff. Another example is when someone would introduce themselves to another person: "I am Avalon Adams," Avalon said. Realistically, I would say, "Hi, I'm Stephanie." So that was a little hard to ignore. Once again, this is something that can be fixed, so that might make the book flow a little easier. Then there was the internal dialogue. It jumped around. One moment you're in Avalon's head, and then you're in Ilium's. That was distracting and confusing, to say the least. I feel like the author just had a hard time conveying what she was picturing in her head and it lost translation on the page. It happens sometimes when writing a book, and I'm sure editors catch those kinds of things, so self-published books have a harder time becoming successful because things can slip through the cracks. I sometimes was really lost on what was happening, and I feel that was due to this problem. It left questions but gave no resolution. A sequel can explain some things, but those elements were just too random to be left up to another book, at least to me. Then, the ending. Good idea, but poorly executed. I won't give spoilers, but did Ilium die? It just kind of had a twist, a very sudden and surprising one, and then the story just abruptly ends. It just ends! Being the reader, I was left puzzled. I mean, the concept was good, the idea for the ending was interesting, but once again, the execution was off. I don't like to rate books that I review as anything less than awesome. I feel horrible when I have to critique instead of rave about the story. I feel bad that I had to give this one three stars. However, I honestly think that the plot was original, and if executed differently, could be quite an amazing story. Nothing like it has been done before. The author gets five stars on originality and creativity, but there just needs to be more to help the reader follow along with what the author has in mind. I am hoping that the author will allow me to read the finished version so I can see if I could rate it higher. Truly, she has an excellent outline for a story that could be big. Like, movie big. The basic elements are all there. A couple more brushstrokes, and Stark could have a masterpiece. I'd really like to see that. And I hope I get the chance.
*I was given an e-copy in exchange for an honest review* After Impact is a great book for those in need of some suspense thriller. There's a lot that goes on in this book, it's just one crazy, thrilling ride. Avalon, the protagonist in the book, is the daughter of the man who came up with the HOPE habitat. She, herself, is brilliant with computers and me wanting to be in computer forensics... well I hope I'm as cool as her ;) Anyway, Avalon goes through this journey of unexpectedly waking up already with doubts about everyone. Her father made her doubt the people in the habitat (for good reason), but it makes everything so much harder for her. Which sucks. I like Avalon, I really do. But when I read, she just seemed to be yelling a lot and it kind of made reading a tad bit annoying. Everyone can hear you, Avalon. No need to scream, haha. I did love her curiosity to find the truth and uncover the secrets. She's one determined girl, and I wish I could say that if I was in her situation, I'd do the same. You never know until you're in the situation if you'd do the predictable or the unthinkable. Ilium is AWESOME. He's definitely not the hottest guy, but he's the most caring and he's definitely smart. I just love him and how he's not the typical "dark and mysterious" guy. And after what happens to him at the end of the book? WHAT'S GONNA HAPPEN?!?! Nicole, I need this sequel now!! The only think about this book that I didn't particularly favor is the fact that I didn't really feel any chemistry between Kael and Ilium with Avalon until the end of the book. Though I was always rooting for Ilium, I didn't feel anything until about 60% of the way into the book. I wish I felt more chemistry and the build-up towards their relationship more. I'm glad though, that at the end I did feel it more because now it makes me want to get my hands on the second installment ;) I love the huge science-fiction part of the book. You may not totally see it while you read, but at the end, it's like you figure out this entire time that it had a major part in the book. It's just like *mind blown* AND THE FREAKIN' ENDING. WHAT. WHATTT?! Major plot twist guys, I can't even explain. All I can say is that you guys need to get the book and read it!!
I would like to thank the author for giving me a copy in exchange of a honest review! This didn't affect my opinion in any way :)
Rating is 2.5/5 stars
I was first delighted when I was given the opportunity to review this book. I had just read the synopsis, and I thought, "why not, this could be great!" Don't misunderstand me, this, indeed, was great. After Impact has a great plot and storyline and twists that I couldn't anticipate. The setting was really interesting and I love the whole idea of sci-fi mixed with dystopia which was reminiscent of "The 100", which I love.
Though, many things did not work out for me. The characters felt flat and one dimensional, the plot progression was too quick. There wasn't enough time to grasp what was happening and yet something else was happening way too fast. Also, there were some grammatical errors and the writing itself lacked some fluidity and due to it, I couldn't really connect to the characters. In addition, I did not like that love-triangle. It was so stereotypical and cliche, not in a I-can't-stand-you kind of way, but close.
On the overall, it was a quick and nice things, though there are some elements in the plot that are quite confusing and many unanswered questions. So yes, I want that sequel nonetheless!
*the author was kind enough to send me this book for free in exchange for an honest review*
I unfortunately did not really like this book.
I liked the idea behind the plot and the setting but thats about it.
The writing was a little all over the place.
For example: Avalon had been awake for a little over a full day, was doing training and commented on how someone giving a compliment was weird for that person. But how would Avalon know that seeing as they had just met.
Also the insta romance in a setting like this was unnecessary seeing as their is an illness and a warning from her father but its okay let me fawn over the cute guys. It did take away a lot from the story and it was awkward at best.
The characters were dull and their dialogue at times made them seem kind of stupid. And in a place where its supposed to be a lot of smart people who can code or just know how to run a place thats cleaning the oxygen etc they didnt come up with clever plans and just stated the obvious.
Also there was cattyness and frat boy behavior that seemed better suited for a college than a place that was earths last hope for humanity.
I wanted to like this but it fell short and hope if you read it you enjoy!
*I received an e-book from the author in exchange for an honest review*
I think this is a great debut novel by Nicole Stark. The premise of the novel, a dystopian, sci fi Earth after an asteroid had hit, is fascinating and is what drew me in to wanting to read this book (how cool are dystopian novels???)
However, as much as I wanted to score it higher than 2 stars, I had a few issues with the dialogue and the overwhelming number of ideas in this book, along with the fact I'm not really into sci fi. It just felt really rushed and a little choppy at times, with so many things happening at once. I think it just tried to do too many things, rather than focusing on one idea. Illium was my fave character but even then, I just generally found them a little flat and unrealistic at times. The romance was nicely teased out but even that felt a little underdeveloped at times.
That being said I did enjoy the book and the ending was an incredible twist- I really want to read the sequel now?
I received a copy from the author, in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you Nicole Stark for the opportunity to read your book. This was an enjoyable read. I am a huge fan of the sci-fi/dystopian genre because it is the genre that made me an avid reader. I really enjoyed this book. There were so many twists and I found that intriguing. The writing style was good, but I did find myself hoping that the ideas created were explained more as the story continued because it seemed to lack some detail. The characters were great. I really enjoyed Avalon's character. I wonder what would be in store for her in the rest of the series. The ending was the best part of the book. I can't wait to continue this series. Overall, a great read.
This book certainly had its twists and turns and is completely unpredictable. I was left in awe a few times.
I did feel that the writing style was a little lacking, probably down to the inexperience of the author. This was very much evident in the first chapter. But still it was an very enjoyable read. I would have liked to have connected to the characters a bit more. I love it when I can be a part of the book, but I felt like an outsider looking in. As the book progressed the writing style did improve. I did begin to get that 'I need to know what happens next' feeling and it certainly kept me turning those pages.
Very much for the dystopian lover
*I'm wondering where the author is taking the next book because the revealing moment at the end of the book, blew me away.
This was a fascinating story about what happened after an asteroid hit and destroyed the Earth as we know it. A group of people went into an underground habitat where they were put to sleep for hundreds of years to be awoken when things were safe for them again above ground. I loved the characters, but found the storyline to be a bit disjointed and confusing at times. I don't know if that was done intentionally to hide details to be revealed later but it made it difficult, the story didn't flow very smoothly. Still I couldn't stop reading it was intriguing and I wanted to know what would happen next. There are lots of twists and turns and surprises, also sort of a love triangle. I think the largest surprise came at the end and now I'm wondering where on Earth the story will go. No pun intended.
After Impact…this book it has left me speechless. The world and characters that Nicole created is just mind blowing. She gives us a world that is familiar yet completely different. For the reasons below I gave this book 5/5 stars. The main premise of this story that in the year 2070 the world was destroyed the earth, forcing 5,000 young people to go underground to survive. 100 years passed and now people are waking, Avalon the daughter of the man who created this home. But something is wrong and Avalon must figure out who she can trust and who and what is going wrong. Now for those of us who like a bit of romance in our reading, you will not be disappointed. There is a love “triangle” in this book. And I am in full support of this. I loved it there were scenes that would rip at your heart and make you create so deeply for these characters.
I know for myself that if I would have had a physical copy I would have devored this book in one sitting but because I am not a great nook / kindle reader it takes me a bit more time. But for those of you who love a bit of YA Dystopian this is your book. I am not a hug dystopian person but I loved the book I don’t know if that says something or not but go get this book guys! Thank you so much Nicole for letting me read your book! I love it so much.
Nicole Stark's debut novel After Impact is now one of my favorite books!!!! I was hooked before I even read the first page. All I needed was the synopsis and I knew I was going to enjoy Avalon's journey immensely. Once I began reading I didn't want to stop, but I forced myself to do so anyway because I didn't want the experience to end so quickly. From begining to end I was hooked. After Impact is a well thought out and vividly written book that will captivate all of your senses and leave you wanting more. I will be impatiently awaiting the next book to release. I very highly recommend purchasing and reading After Impact!
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Great debut novel by this author! So many twists and turns in the storyline that you'll never guess what is really happening until the very end. Can't wait for book #2!
I received a free copy of this book to write an honest review. I enjoyed this book and was surprised at the twists and turns the story took. The ending has me hooked to see what happens next. I enjoyed the story line and really enjoy science fiction. I think their could have been a little more detail added to this book to make me completely get lost in the story. However, I enjoyed this story and am excited to see what happens next.
I received a copy of this book for free in return for a review - I also received a revised copy for a second review It has been 100 years since Earth was hit by a life-ending asteroid. Avalon Adams was one of the lucky few, “saved” to live in the HOPE Habitat. After waking up earlier than scheduled, Avalon mets Ilium. A young and kind boy who helps Avalon get acclimated to the new life in HOPE. Everyone within the habitat is intelligent, beautiful, and genetically sound, that is how they gained their “saved” status. Avalon adjusts quickly to her role as a computer systems engineer and the mundane food served to the inhabitants. As time passes in HOPE, strange things start happening to Avalon. Habitat members become sick and some disappear. Avalon and Ilium band together to find out what is happening in HOPE, only discover more than they imagined. After Impact is Nicole Sparks debut novel. I read this novel about a month ago and found it hard to connect to the characters within the book. I didn’t feel as much emotion that I would have expected to surface in a place like HOPE. While I enjoyed the relationship the Avalon and Ilium had, I wanted more. (I might be a sucker for some good romance) There were also some unclear parts that had me wondering if I had misread some of the beginning chapters. I received a revised copy of After Impact with some adjustments that Nicole had made to the story. When I started reading the novel again, I could tell the tone was different. I also wondered if reading the book for a second time would make things clearer. These adjustments added great depth to the story, that I was looking for in the first copy. Many of the small inconsistencies were cleared up providing greater flow to the story. The formal dialogue that I was having a hard time with in the beginning; I decided it was how these characters spoke to one another. These aren’t you typical slang talking teens that many young adult novels are centered around. Avalon, Ilium, and serval other supporting characters are intelligent and are wise beyond their years. They wouldn’t be throwing around the slang terms we say today. It is a 100 years later. There were also more stolen moments between Avalon and Ilium. The care they had for each other was more pronounced and that made me happy. I saw in another review that the love triangle between Avalon, Ilium, and Kael was rather cliche. I didn’t quite see the love triangle. Avalon didn’t really express true feelings for Kael. Yes, she was attracted to him, but not in the sense that Ilium would ever loose Avalon, or vice versa. I was also happy to see an expanded relationship between two of the supporting characters. It added the emotion that I was looking for to connect with the characters. There are some major twists and turns in the story, that really keep you reading. The pace quickens as time becomes more and more precious to members inside HOPE. I would recommend this book for an exciting read. I hope there is a second book because, I have so many questions that need to be answered! There is a world out there, after impact, that is ready to be explored.
"After Impact" a mesmerizing post-apocalyptic thriller set on Earth one hundred years after an asteroid devastated the planet, bringing humanity close to extinction revolves around Avalon Adams the daughter of the chief scientist who predicted the disaster. Resuscitated from cryosleep in a habitat where social inequality, injustice and mistrust infuses the atmosphere Avalon and her friend Ilium search for the truth behind a mysterious message, abductions and deaths that imperil their lives.
Nicole Stark brings to life Humanity's One Plan for Escape (HOPE) a habitat where five thousand Americans chosen in a lottery then tested psychologically and physically are placed in cryosleep to awaken when the air outside is breathable and the Earth can be terraformed. Inside the habitat is marred by the brutality of the police and society's divided into a class structure governed by the autocratic rule of the President, Council and the elected administration of Accipios.
Mystery abounds when Avalon's awakened early and discovers not only a message from her father not to trust anyone, but members of the Compaticos ( the janitorial class) are missing or succumbing to a lethal virus which has started to spread. As the plot heats up, the action escalates when Avalon becomes suspicious of the President and his chief scientist's involvement. Tension and suspense mount as the story-line begins to twist and turn with every clue unraveled. Although the writing style is a bit bumpy at first this quickly disappears as the action intensifies and the drama culminates in a shocking cliff-hanger at the end that begs for a sequel.
In the plot friendship turns to love as Ilium and Avalon search for the truth behind the mystery. Yet in a sudden twist in all the turmoil the President announces a pairing for the good of humanity based on genetics. Dutiful to the government's will Avalon and Ilium struggle to keep their emotions in check until tragedy looms igniting their passion for one another again.
Cleverly the author slowly develops the personalities of the characters which seem at first to be one-dimensional but quickly evolve, infusing the unfolding drama with depth, passion and energy. Avalon Adams haunted by the loss of her father is super smart, frank, adventurous in spirit and attracted to Kael's good-looks and charisma at first. But as events unfold she's drawn to Ilium the orphan whose intelligence earned him a place in habitat. As her determination and resourcefulness grows Avalon is attracted to Ilium's wholesomeness, his protective, trustworthy and loyal nature. Boyish in charm, caring and generous Ilium changes becoming more spontaneous, brave and resilient as he works with and falls in love with Avalon. Similarly, Kael Frost the mischievous, playboy son of the President seems calm, cool and collected, but shows a vulnerable side as the plot draws to an explosive and heartrending conclusion.
I thoroughly enjoyed "After Impact" an exciting thriller that gets better with every chapter and I look forward to reading the sequel.
[I was given a digital edition for free, in exchange for an honest review]
A book with an interesting theme, or at least a theme that I’m into. I must admit that my 4 stars are actually 3.5 – I wouldn’t go down to 3 because I actually believe this could be a more than OK novel.
It depicts a life after Earth was struck by an asteroid. Being the daughter of the man who discovered the object, Avalon is granted passage on the shelter built to protect a limited number of humans from the inevitable impact. HOPE (Humanity’s One Plan for Escape) was a built-in fortress, with state of the art technology which was able to keep 5000 people alive until Earth was a proper habitat once again. Avalon wakes up after years of being cryogenic sleep surrounded by people she cannot trust (according to a message her father left encoded in a necklace) and will start to investigate the mysterious disappearances and deaths.
I will start with the reasons for my 4 (3.5) stars. As mentioned, I like the theme very much, I like how the author envisioned humanity getting ready for an inevitable impact and how the Earth looked like in a “post-asteroid” era. Second reason is the mystery that surrounds the story. You don’t know who’s the bad guy, you get to change your opinion from page to page and before you know it, you’re caught up in all the twist. Third reason, and definitely not the last, is the ending. I can tell you whatever you think about, it’s not it! And I really really appreciate the unpredictable finale.
To be honest, the book could use a little bit of organizing. I mean there seems to be no coordination between the characters. Some characters are not so involved in the story but in the end become helpers and there’s Dexter which is still a complete mystery. Also, I would have liked a better explanation about the impact (how did it happen, why it couldn’t be stopped etc).
Since this is the debut novel, I do believe there’s a lot of potential! I can’t wait to read the second part of the story as it left me with a lot of questions regarding the survival of the human race. So I’d like to congratulate Miss Stark and wish her good luck with her book and career as an author and thank her for the opportunity to review this great novel!
After Impact by Nicole Stark is a great sci-fi, fantasy, mystery, thriller, romance, post-apocalyptic novel all in one. Some how she makes it blend perfectly. An extinction asteroid has hit Earth and only those in cryo state in the HOPE habitat is mankind's only living survivors. It has been 100 years and now some of the cryo chambers are opening but life in the habitat is not what Avalon expected. It is run cruelly. Food is rationed by the job the people have. There are beatings by the guards for misbehavior. There is someone doing experiments on people in secret. People are going missing. People are assigned to their life mate. Avalon is left a message from her father not to trust anyone. He should know, he helped build the habitat. The plot is great, but it is a cliff hanger. There are lots of suspense, twists, and surprises. The characters are well developed and interesting. I enjoyed it greatly. I was given this book for a honest review and it in no way effected my rating or review content.
Avalon Adams is woken from a cryogenic sleep 100 years after an asteroid struck Earth. She is among the 5,000 chosen to reestablish civilization. Her awakening was triggered by accident and before her scheduled time. She could have easily died if Ilium, the resident physician hadn’t been close by.
The society set up within HOPE (Humanity’s One Plan for Escape), the underground facility designed by her father, is not at all like the world she left behind. Not only that but people are dying from a virus they were all supposedly vaccinated against when they entered the habitat. People are also disappearing without a trace. And, a cryptic message left for her by her father to trust no one leaves Avalon feeling all alone.
Ilium seems to be trustworthy and has sworn to protect her. Then there is the President’s son, Kael, who seems genuinely attracted to her. Can she find out what is going on by getting close to Kael without losing the friendship she has with Ilium? Love triangles are so overdone and cliché.
Stark’s first novel in the After Impact series, After Impact, is billed as a futurist dystopian with a mysterious twist. It is more of a new adult who-done-it. Avalon is too curious to let things play out. She must know who or what is causing the viral deaths and to what end.
About halfway through the book, things turn paranormal. I was unprepared for that. There was nothing up to that point or in the book’s description that leads you to expect it. I’m not a fan of paranormal, so it was hard for me to keep reading. But, this in no way affects the review.
Avalon’s character is 18 and still full of teenage angst. Several of the other characters, while supposedly older by a few years, exhibit childish behavior. Based on the reasoning for which they were chosen I would have expected more maturity.
This book is a fast-paced, engaging read. The writing is obviously by a new author who has a lot of potential. It will be interesting to see what Stark does in the next book of the series.
4 out of 5 stars.
I received this book for free from the author for review consideration. This in no way affected my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. This book was incredibly spell-binding and had me glued to my iPad whenever I had time free.
In this story, a catastrophic meteor is set on a collision course with Earth and it will mean total destruction to the human race! The main character, Avalon, is one of the five thousand chosen to live in a habitat that was created by her father, the very man who discovered the existence of the meteor and who was able to plan the salvation for a select group of survivors.
The beginning of the story starts when Avalon is woken from cryogenic sleep, after being frozen for many years. The plan was to bring a certain number of humans out of sleep to prepare for the time when the earth would be inhabitable again. However, Avalon was woken up too soon and could of died. Luckily the physician, Iliam, was there to ensure she was okay after being woken early. Avalon’s first memory is the fact that her father could not come and that she went to the habitat in his stead. Devastated and feeling very alone, Avalon discovers a hidden message from her father advising her to trust nobody and that there is something devious at work in the habitat.
I do not want to spoil the entire plot, but let it be known that this story has plenty of twists and turns and excitement, as well as romance and danger. The ending leaves us with a major cliffhanger and I cannot wait to read what happens next!!! Pick up a copy- I saw it was free to read on Kindle Unlimited, at least for now, so don’t pass up the chance for a great read!!
Thanks again to the author for reaching out to me! Excellent storytelling talent!!
I was given a digital edition for free, in exchange for an honest review.
After Impact is based on a highly engaging premise: what would happen if we knew an asteroid was going to hit the Earth? We'll, we would plan for it and try to get at least some people to safety.
That is exactly what happened in this book. 5000 people are saved before the asteroid hits. They are placed into a cryogenic sleep for 100 years and then awakened to terraform and repopulate the earth.
But………. …... something is wrong. After receiving a cryptic message from her father Avalon starts to investigate the underground habitat, the systems and the people. Without giving too much away, I can say that the story is full of the idea of good vs. evil, standing up for what you believe, and learning that physical attraction isn’t the only thing to base a relationship off of. The story is sweet and funny and full of adventure.
Why 4 stars? I loved this story and cannot wait to see the author mature more. There were several instances of deux ex machina (that easily could have been prevented by adequate foreshadowing), jumping pov, incomplete plot points and a serious lack of foreshadowing. I loved the idea (and the ending is amazing!) but it was not fully fleshed out. From a “word” perspective, there was a lot of telling (not showing) even on the (somewhat awkward) dialogue. I would have given the story 3 stars but for: the originality of the idea, the incredible ending, and the fact that I would read the next installment in the series.
Bottom line: Would I read the next book: yes Would I recommend it to a friend: yes. I would recommend this day read for anyone who wants a great story and can overlook some structural issues. It is going to be a great series!

I love the dystopian novels and I love this book, it is a vice that catches you and does not let you go until the end, I would like it to be longer but it is surprisingly well balanced the development of characters with the development of the story, with all those twists and mysteries.
The story reminds me a lot of the "red rising" trilogy of Pierce Brown (which is one of my favorite sagas) and the Michael Bay movie "the island" so it can not be bad. After the dececption of reading "the 100" (the entire saga) this is a breath of fresh and comforting air.
It is obvious that she is a young and eager author, she has to polish things. It is her first book and it shows; I see it as a diamond in the rough, it has shown what it is capable of and it sure improves it even more in the following books.
I hope that everything goes great and that she triumphs doing what she likes most. With that end I can not wait for the next book, I hope it is a trilogy or a saga even longer if she knows how to take it and does not saturate it.
I can only recommend it (if you like dystopian novels) and pay attention to the following because it promises a lot.
First off, I was given the book to read in exchange for a rating, but I enjoyed it so much I felt the desire to review it.
&& I loved it, it keeps you on your seat, you're on this journey as the characters are as well, and you find yourself wanting to know more about this world we've stepped into. While the genre of future/post apocalyptic/dystopian is always a personal favorite, I found a few similar elements as well as some well thought out elements I would have never thought of.
However there are a few things I can note that bothered me, often times I found myself reading a conversation between characters and have mentioned of a time that wasn't on the pages that I wish I could have read. Adventures I wish were written out, and personally I did wish to have seen the love triangle at a fair shot, not just end so predictable without both sides truly getting a chance. There is so much momentum really early on in the book that it left me wanting more.
Over all this is definitely worth having in your shelf and a personal favorite that I consider myself lucky to have found its way to me.
Its awesome... Its like a power punch of 'THE 100' tv series in some ways. I loved reading it. Its nothing like I've ever read before, I mean post Apocalyptic kinda stage. Last of the mankind's best saved in bunkers only to emerge as somebody else.
The author went to great extent in describing the details of surroundings as without them it would be really difficult to relate to. Avalon is a pretty strong character. Though few things weren't clear, like how she got back up to speed with everything after waking from cryosleep unlike other(inspite of her being special), Why was Dexter's footprint on the walls(did he turn into spiderman), how come the Illian guy didn't have any effects of radiation poison sooner.
& in the end, it was Avalon's crazy dad aka president who changed his appearance to get into the bunker. I guess in the next part, the author will reveal, that this crazy Dad of hers is the one who entrusted that crazy geneticists Viggo into doing creepy stuffs inside by changing his appearance.
I guess we'll find out in the next episode.
All in all it was great to have read this book. Its awesome to the power infinite. Simply loved it.
Wow this book is amazing. I love how it's placed in the future. This book is how I would like things to go as far as having an underground facility. I mean picture it something happens to Earth where you have a chance to save people. But the catch is to be frozen and woken up in the future. But for Avalon leaving her friends and her father behind is hard for her. Avalon wakes up and quickly becomes friends with Ilium, a nice med guy. However she finds a hologram message from her father not to trust anyone. As things start to unravel inside the place Avalon realizes things aren't really as they seem. People mysteriously goes missing and die. But it's all being covered up. Just when I thought I had it all figured out, a big twist comes into play. Please hurry with the second book. Love this book so much.
'Thank you to Nicole for giving me a copy to review' I will say that I loved the plot and idea of the story. I cannot wait to see what is next for Avalon, Illium, and Keal (Sorry if I didn't spell the names correctly). this story line has so much potential and ended on a cliff hanger for me. I will not go into details because I want you to read it yourself, and not ruin anything for you. It is definitely worth a read! The writting does need a little improvement, but this is Nicole's first Novel and I think she has done wonderful for her debut and I think she will do well in the sci fi world.
This books was incredible, we have Avalon our protagonist who wake up 100 years later into the future. She’s strong and together with Ilium, try to discover the truth about the habitat. Things are happening, people disappear and not one mention it. A virus is infecting people but only a certain group, why is that? Little by little, Avalon and Ilium, discover what is happening but what’s going to happen to them when they open the gates to walk Earth again. If you like dystopian stories you will like this one. I enjoyed reading this book and cannot wait for the next one. I received a copy of this book for my honest review.
*I got a free copy of this book in exchange for a honest review* The book was very good. Some of the things were kind of predictable and of course we have to have the love triangle. The book was very well written with many details but I think some scenes were written too short with less details (there are not many scenes like that). Overall the plot was good. There were some things I didn't expect to happen (which is very rare on fantasy books) and I totally didn't expect the ending. All in all I loved the book and I hope the second part comes soon.
