Richard Sala grew up with a fascination for musty old museums, dusty old libraries, cluttered antique shops, narrow alleyways, hidden truths, double meanings, sinister secrets and spooky old houses. He has written and drawn a number of unusual graphic novels which often combine elements of classic mystery and horror stories and which have been known to cause readers to emit chuckles as well as gasps. Although most of his books are written with teens and older readers in mind, his book, CAT BURGLAR BLACK, can be enjoyed by younger readers as well.

An evil cult is sacrificing a young woman in a castle by torchlight - enter Violenzia who shoots all the bad cultists dead! There are crazy hillbilly murderers living in some survivalist camp in the mountains - enter Violenzia who shoots all them rednecks dead!

Who’s Violenzia? Why’s she shooting all these people? How’re they connected to some evil corporation called Xadico? Richard Sala doesn’t tell us and there are no clues in this short 50ish page book either. There’s mystery and then there’s nothing - Violenzia is the latter. It’s a totally uninvolving read.

Violenzia’s a departure for Sala who normally constructs more complex stories with elements of horror, fairy tales, fantasy, sci-fi and his own unique imagination. Here, it’s like he’s barely thinking. Violenzia kills people and that’s it - can you call that a “story”? I’m all for strong female characters but Violenzia herself isn’t a character, she’s just someone who shows up and shoots guns.

It’s not even good action - Violenzia poses awkwardly with her guns at strange angles in the middle of whoever she’s shooting and they all magically die. Sala reuses these poses multiple times to the same effect. It’s so boring! It’s not very graphic violence though with tiny bursts of red for blood and little else besides. I still generally like his art here and I thought it was great that the evil senator looks like Dick Cheney - that man is a real monster!

I usually like Richard Sala’s comics so I was disappointed with how this one played out. I’m just not sure what he was going for - maybe wish fulfilment, killing people in society he dislikes? - but Violenzia was a dull story of some cipher who shoots other ciphers for no reason in very un-entertaining ways. I highly recommend The Hidden or Delphine as much better Richard Sala books to read over this.

I had no idea this was released, and am I glad to see Richard Sala back in action! His artwork continues to look amazing, and the coloring continues to excite. Oddly enough, this title is not terribly violent, given Sala's track record and the title. Sure, there's lots of shooting but there is very little blood or gore here.

Sala is the master of mystique...you only get glimpses of a story within the story he presents, but that's all you need. As in life and/ or mystery, the whole story is never truly discovered. Here, Violenzia is freed from an asylum in which she's been unfairly committed (why?) in order that she might destroy the criminal organizations with which Sala litters his work (why?).

I can't help but imagine that VIOLENZIA is a response to the social status right now, wherein wingnut white trash rednecks, decorating their cabins with the Confederate flag, and the mysterious, murderous cabal led by a Senator are in violent control, or violently attempting to control the larger community. And Violenzia is sent to destroy that control.

But why? The "why?" again is ultimately irrelevant, but I do hope that Sala revisits this charcter...there is a lot left to explore here, especially the origins of Violenzia, Xadico's motivations, and the mini-spirit who seems to control Xadico. And this is ultimately what I find a bit frustrating, is that Sala's not turning these recent books into longer works like GLASS SCORPION.

Richard Sala is Awesome

I really enjoyed the art as well as the story. I can say the same thing for every Richard Sala book.

There was something off-kilter enough for me to enjoy this. I didn't need to know anything more other than Violenzia was meant to clean up the messes that Xadico created. I would've liked to know more about the characters but the name of the book translates to violence. The act of violence doesn't have development, it is the product of something else.

Sala definitely leaves us guessing but like I said, there's enough weirdness in the art and the purple prose (looking at you Rasputin look alike) that I enjoyed this.

An uncharacteristically weak outing for a usually reliable storyteller. It felt like an amateur short film, with a few set pieces of action and the connecting narrative tissue left on the cutting room floor.

This bad ass character spends the entire book shooting people. There's no real story line or reason to flip another page.

I didn't get it. It felt like a book missing a middle and an end, just two extended but ultimately uninteresting action scenes.

I had really high hopes for this - the cover looked amazing and the description intrigued me. But I was quite disappointed.
The book follows Violenzia, who goes around saving people from terrible situations -like cult sacrifices and hillbilly riots. And that about sums up the story. There was very little character development, almost no real plot, and minimal dialogue. I was hoping for a more intriguing story, but Violenzia really just spends the whole book saving people and nothing else really happens.
I will say that the artwork is pretty and it looks very nice. I just expected a better story.
