Free Fall #3

Paint the Stars

Rate this book
Ezra Greene has made a pretty decent life for himself. He has a nice apartment and spends his days doing the one thing he’s always loved—creating art. Despite being somewhat of a grumpy recluse, he’s even made a few loyal friends. When he takes a side job painting a mural at a local holistic center, he can’t help being curious about a certain friendly and self-assured yoga instructor, even if he doesn’t buy into any of that Zen crap. His holier-than-thou family already tried fitting him inside a box, and he swore he’d never be molded into anybody’s belief system again.

For Daevonte Randall, adulthood has worked out pretty well. He’s close to his parents and lives with an awesome roommate. He’s content with weekend hookups, teaching yoga, and taking college courses. What he doesn’t expect is to be so intrigued by the brooding and reserved painter he’s been tasked to stay after hours with at the center. Something fascinates him about Ezra, even after Daevonte’s attempts at flirting gets him friend-zoned on the spot.

As weeks pass, Ezra and Dae get to know each other, and soon their friendship catches fire. But Ezra’s been burned pretty badly before so trust and intimacy has to be earned. Daevonte feels up to the task, but it proves difficult as Ezra continues to keep his emotions in check. Dae’s only willing to wait so long, and when they’re dealt a surprising blow, Ezra needs to decide if love is worth the risk, that is…if it’s not too late.

I haven't read the previous books in this series but that definitely didn't spoil my enjoyment of this so I would say it can be a standalone.

Ezra is an Artist, currently working on a mural at the Mind Body Holistic and Wellness Centre in Santa Monica. This is where he meets Dae who does Yoga classes at the centre.

These two couldn't be more different in terms of their personalities and their family background.
Ezra grew up in a highly religious Catholic family. His parents have never really fully accepted him being gay and certainly don't want the church, they regularly attend,to know about his sexuality. He felt suffocated growing up and once he left for college he hardly ever returns home.

Dae's family,in comparison, are like a breath of fresh air.His parents married when they found out,at a young age, his mother was pregnant with Dae and have a loving relationship. They have always been fully supportive of him and I absolutely loved the relationship he had with them.

Dae is a massive flirt,he's never really been interested in anything serious before but he finds himself drawn to the quiet, broody Artist. He makes it more than obvious he's interested in Ezra.
Ezra is quite introverted, and values his privacy but when Dae's flirting doesn't let up he's forced to tell Dae that he's demisexual. He's never instantly attracted to anyone,he needs a close bond with someone before he can start to feel anything.

This is a slow burn and it's a beautiful love story of two men finding what they want in each other.Dae recognizes that Ezra needs time to get to know him and it was quite special seeing Ezra finally letting someone get close to him.

Recommended Read.

This is a beautiful friends-to-lovers story, told in an alternating first-person POV, about two very different men quietly falling in love.

Ezra, the son of devout Catholics, is the brooding artist; he's introverted and happiest at home with his paints and weed. He's also demi-sexual, so an emotional connection is integral to him feeling sexual attraction.

Daevonte, or Dae for short, is a student and yoga instructor; a few years younger than Ezra, Dae loves being around people and prefers hook-ups to relationships. He's not adverse to commitment, but he's not looking either.

Unlike Ezra's rather judgmental parents, Dae's family is awesome. His parents were teens when they had him, but it was always the three of them against the world.

Paint the Stars is one hundred percent relationship driven and can be read as a standalone.

"They remind me of you," Ezra says softly from beside me . . . .

"What does?"

"The stars . . . these amazing bursts of light in the darkness."

My heart begins to beat wildly against my chest . . . .
"[N]o one has ever said something like that to me before."

"I find that hard to believe."

"It's true."

"Then they weren't looking at you the way I do."

The story is surprisingly steamy (once Ezra connects with Dae, he can't keep his hands off Dae's gorgeous body, and the feeling is most definitely mutual) and offers a lovely tentative HEA; the MCs are young, but they already know how to communicate and compromise.

P.S. Kudos on the gorgeous cover!

Enjoyable in the beginning, but the moment the friendship between Ezra and Dae turned into something more, the story got repetitive and boring. If I hadn't listened to the audiobook, I would have skipped all the intimate scenes. I didn't really feel them as a couple.

The narrators didn't help either. James Cavenaugh (Dae's POV) has a pleasant voice, but Ryan Turner (Ezra's POV) made Ezra sound like the dullest person ever.

3.5 for the Audiobook and the story

I usually have a problem with 2 narrators, atleast in this they tried, but i still felt disconnected. Ezra's voice was almost a whisper, i kept adjusting the volume. Dae was somehow ok.

Overall the story was ok but it did not wow me. This series has been a miss for me,i barely remember the story from the previous books. I am sure if you ask me 3 days from now what this book was about, my answer will be: "I have no idea."

If you want some fluff with a little bit of angst, give it a try.

For me it was a bit of a miss. We can't love them all.

This is the third book in the Free Fall series. I have to admit I didn't really love the first 2 books, but this one surprised me big time.

I loved Daevonte's personality. He was sociable, talkative and sincere. While Ezra was the opposite. I've read only a few books with characters that fall under the ace spectrum. And I liked the theme here. Ezra being demisexual made me enjoy this story even more.

I was very pleased with their tentative touches and sweet first kisses. I loved their discussions and the way Ezra was slowly opening up to Dae. Ezra was crushed when Ben, his only lover, disappeared. It's obvious he found it hard to get close to someone new. But Dae was really patient and I really loved how thoughtful he was.

This story was low on angst, but I loved it! Well written and pretty hot at times.

Paint the Stars by Christina Lee and Nyrae Dawn is the third installment of the Free Fall Series. *shouts* WE FINALLY GOT EZRA'S BOOK!

I've been waiting for his story since Touch the Sky. Ezra was the quiet, intense roommate. He kept to himself and would lose himself in his art. Art was his solace. In this book, he has a job painting murals at a holistic center, and it's while working on his paintings that he meets Daevonte. Daevonte who is fun, fearless, and outgoing. What began as a simple friendship would blossom into more; only if Ezra is willing to open his heart and take a chance.

My highlights:

-THAT cover! Can we please take a minute to appreciate this beauty? It’s stunning.

-The characters. Both Ezra and Dae were well fleshed out. They each had a distinct voice, and I felt the authors did an excellent job bringing together two very different personalities and have them fit each other so well.

-Pace. The pace of the story flowed seamlessly, and I was unable to tell this story was written collaboratively.

-Narration. The story is told from alternating POVs.

-Relationship development. The progression of their relationship from friends to lovers was magical. Ezra is demisexual. He doesn't feel sexual attraction unless he has a strong emotional connection with someone. There was no insta-love and jumping into bed here. Instead, there was a friendship, mutual respect, and a delicious slow burn.

-Steam. But once they get it on- good laaawd!

-Angst. It's there but not overpowering; it's just enough to keep you on your toes. Just a pinch.

-The supporting cast. I love series that are standalones because past characters tend to make appearances in following books- like in this case. It's nice to see what the ol' gang is up to and that everyone is happy.

-The end. It was romantic and dreamy.♥ Ezra has been added to my Book Boyfriend List.

Any negatives? Nope.

Can it be read as a standalone or out of order?Yes, but be sure to check out Touch the Sky and Chase the Sun they're great.

These ladies have outdone themselves with Paint the Stars- this book was everything I hoped for and more. They've written a beautiful, emotional story about trust, forgiveness, and taking chances. HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT. 5 Stars!

P.S. I am begging y'all to please write a book for Ben and Henry. Together. Friends to lovers, unrequited love, second chances... I can feel it!!!

I FREAKING ADORED THIS BOOK.

It was great, y'all! I actually didn't expect it. I can even say that the writing improves enormously with this last installment and FYI you can read this as standalone if you want to, I think it won't spoil the story.

Ezra appears from book one, he was Gabe's stiff roommate and then Connor's. He considers himself demisexual, he's an artist, he has trouble opening up to people but that hasn't stopped him from having a great group of friend that he definitely finds annoying sometimes. He doesn't think he needs anything more, he's those kinds of people who have trouble taking risks and getting out of his comfort zone, so when Daevonte appears on his life, all his foundations shake, all his walls crumble.

Daeveonte is the total opposite from Ezra and seeing them function together reminded me Sabrina Carpenter's song Why that says: "Tell me how we're not alike, but we work so well and we don't even know why" well, exactly like that.

This was a great slow-burn. Ezra being demisexual it couldn't have been any other way, as his friend Ben says, he always falls for friends. I like Daevonte's doubts about having a relationship with Ezra. It felt real, big, important. He knew that starting something physical with him wasn't going to be easy, that if something happened, he needed to be all in because it there would have been no going back for them.

Paint The Stars is a beautiful story with engaging characters and I consider this was a great ending to Free Fall series. Ezra fits perfectly with the story these authors established from book one.

If you want a story with real and strong characters, I recommend you these books.

“I want to paint the stars I see in his eyes. The constellations I put there right in this moment.

The ones I desperately hope don’t fade—burn out—anytime soon.”

Very chill, very sweet, a very Zen kind of read. Which feels kinda wrong to describe it like that, considering how twenty-six year old brooding pretty painter Ezra Greene has experienced such a painful breakup, as well as a traumatizing childhood that for twenty-one-year-old yoga instructor '—the calming soothing presence and the fun and flirty jokester—' Daevonte Randall to light up his life like stardust - with vibrancy and color that seemed to have been for so long - yet, it seems like the best way to paint the easy-going and steady way in which the two gravitated into each other's orbits. 🥺 How they come from two very different backgrounds and upbringings, and yet, they became friends who fit into each other's parts and lives, so well.

Can you feel that? Feel how fast my heart is beating? That’s how crazy I get every time I think about you.”

It’s the best I can do, and I hope it’s enough.

I appreciate that there was a certain level of continuity to the theme of this series; how it was the characters' respective family lives that played such a key role into the people they turned out to be. Dae's free-loving and joyous family life is a vibrant contrast to the stiff and more reserved parental control that Ezra had to endure growing up. It made him be more hesitant and constrained in revealing that he was even gay - as a son of a family so very invested in their Christian beliefs - it would be difficult. 😟 It became worse when his heart was broken by someone he thought he had loved - someone he had felt that he could have built a future with.

So to see that crumble down in a heartbeat, for someone who is primarily demisexual and does not get attached so easily and let his heart be overwhelmed so often - it is a sharp wake-up call when Dae's kindness, his lovable nature, and his nurturing calmness - and most of all, his attraction to him that starts off as a friendship - a friend seeking to give Ezra a peace of mind and just relax. It would be impossible to fight the warmth of finally being with someone who loves so easily '—a friendship with someone who knows you inside and out.' ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹 Dae's family, too, was such a breath of fresh air - giving Ezra the chance to simply relax and be himself - to be more giving with his thoughts and emotions. When they teased Dae about bringing a white boy home, it felt like they had already welcomed him - without question. ☺️

How fucking hard it would have been for Ezra to put himself out there like this.
To be laid bare.

And he did it for me.

Their dynamic felt natural and sincere; it slowly built up, which I liked. I liked how patient Dae was with Ezra - how he was casual in reminding Ezra of the beauty of living - to enjoy it and embrace it, rather than hide yourself behind a canvas. 'Life is an adventure, Van Gogh.' Ezra has always been that older brother to the previous couples, so it was nice to see them showing their full support for him finally showing affection for another. No one really knows his past - heck, no one really knows much about him - aside from he's a popular fan of smoking weed and a talented artist who paints wonders of murals and portraits. 😢 So, for Dae - his complete opposite - much younger, more laid-back - half-Black/ half-Mexican - someone who grew up surrounded by love and acceptance - he's someone special enough who is able to break down those walls. And they were very warm and welcoming of him - eager to see how he would charm the one who they thought would always be the grumpy recluse. How he's able to push Ezra out of his comfort zone and try new things - to be a better person than he was before. 💟

And they were good together - 'different energies and interests, but we seem to match on other levels, ones that matter.' In time, they built up a tender relationship, very conscious of each other's boundaries, as well as respecting how much of each other's hearts they are willing to hand over before they both admit that what started off as a casual flirtation and hook-up could eventually turn into something more. I liked how their physical intimacy could be so passionate and flirty - I mean, that painting scene! 😏 - and still be so gentle and soft. 'I feel flayed open—so fragile and vulnerable—my heart on exhibit beating rapidly outside my body. His for the taking.' Dae was funny and frank; his candid honesty lit up Ezra with a smile each time, which, in turn, made me smile, too. He was soothing with his touches and affectionate with his words. 🤍🤍

I think about you all the time and count the minutes until I can see you again.

Through gentle maneuvering and the much-needed wake-up call, they both did figure it out. As much as he knows that Ezra owns his heart, he doesn't push him to return those sentiments, till Ezra is finally able to break free of the heartbreak that he was still holding onto so fiercely. One that made it difficult for him for so long to crave a connection - despite how much he missed it - wanted it - yearned for it. 'You love and you live so fully, and I want that. I want it with you.' 🥹 To finally let go of a guilt and shame that made it so difficult to move on and finally let someone into his heart again - to finally trust that the next person he entrusts his heart to - won't let go of him again.

It's not exactly rocket-science kind of reading, but it is one that is lighthearted and tender. Even when Ezra was waxing poetry of how his feelings for Dae had changed, it was heartfelt and kinda romantic. One that even I can set aside my own questionable ratings and appreciate the emotional way in which the two of them gravitated towards one another. One that evokes how the power of love can heal even the most painful of scars and allow two likeable characters to find companionship in each other's embrace. 🫂🫶🏻

This book is beautiful and I love it and I want more.

I wanted Ezra's story since book 1 and I thought his book was going to be 2 actually, not that I'm complaining, book 2 was good and the wait was totally worth it.

Ezra is an artist, he has a pretty descent life, he gets money for his paintings, he has friends, he lives in a nice apartment so he doesn't feel like anyting is missing from his life, least of all, love.
He loved in the past and that cut him deep, now he doesn't have the time for relationships.

Dae is a young yoga teacher that's taking college courses. He is very focused in his studies, he's young so he doesn't want a relationship, his parents had him when they were teenagers so he wants to live his life to the fullest the way his parents didn't have chance to. He has awesome parents, a good roommate and he loves talking to the broody painter Ezra.

The relationship was developt slowly, This is partly because Ezra is demisexual but it's not the whole reason, Ezra is wary to open his heart again.
I liked how they started by being friends and they shared their lives with each other, the connection between them was beautiful and the last chapter brought tears to my eyes.
I would have loved an epilogue but I'm not complaining because the story ends with hope and just like we've seen the previous two couples I hope to see these guys in the next story too.

A sedate, slow burn with a hard earned happy ending.

The blurb really does say it all.

Ezra identifies as demisexual, and on top of a painful relationship past, it takes a lot to overcome his self imposed exile in the majority of social situations. Trust for him is very hard to come by and those not willing to take it slow are quickly dismissed. However, there’s something about the friendly Daevonte, who doesn’t push too much but doesn’t back off easily either, all of which makes Ezra want to step outside the box despite how terrifying such a notion it is.

Daevonte surely isn’t looking for anything serious. What starts out as maybe a personal challenge to get the intriguing artist to open up, quickly turns into something else as he learns more and more. Regardless of sexual attraction, Daevonte realizes that just being friends with the surly Ezra is totally worth it.

As their relationship evolves, it’s Ezra that changes the most. He comes to see that by only half living, he’s cut himself off from true intimacy and happiness, something he definitely misses and craves. Ezra must find the courage to fight for what he wants. Dae is not going to do all the work in building their foundation. On the other hand, Dae discovers that delving deeper past superficial attraction has it’s own rewards, and together these two have chemistry in all that they do.

Overall, a recommended sweet and sexy strangers-to-friends-to-lovers story.

It meant a lot to me to write this book. I connected with Daevonte before the first word was written. As authors I think we often times put a little of ourselves, our lives or people we know into our books. Dae has a lot of personal ties to me and it meant a lot to twine them into his book. And of course he finds his perfect match in Ezra who is brooding and oh so sexy. Dae and Ezra own my heart.

A very beautiful book between a very very very shy Ezra and the beautiful yoga teacher Dae.
When i started this book, i was eager to see Ezra let go...just see him not so stressed and happy. That happened (at Ezra's level ^^) but that was not the most incredible in this book. The part i really loved was see Dae growing up! He wasn't my favorite in the beginning (Ezra <3) but in the end i really loved him. At just 21 with just one-nights stand at his count, he wasn't prepared for a REAL relationship. But when it fell on him he made mistakes like all of us (but he has the best parents in the world <3) and he manages it the best way he could.

Highly recommended :)

This was another beautifully poignant addition to Lee and Dawn’s Free Fall series.

In this third installment, we finally get Ezra’s story. Previously introduced as the brooding and enigmatic painter and roommate to Gabriel (see: Touch the Sky), and then later Connor (see: Chase the Sun), Ezra has been an intriguing mystery up until this point.

An introvert by nature, Ezra likes to keep to himself. He avoids personal relationships as much as humanly possible, especially sexual relationships. Not only was he left heartbroken in the past by the one and only man he ever loved, but Ezra also identifies as demisexual and requires a significant emotional connection with others before he feels comfortable opening himself up and trusting on a deeper level. He doesn’t do hook-ups, period. Instead, Ezra channels all his life and passion into his painting, which has worked for him to a point.

When commissioned to paint a calming mural at the Mind Body Holistic and Wellness Centre in Santa Monica, he is befriended by Daevonte, a yoga instructor at the center who volunteers to stay behind after hours while Ezra paints. Dae is a shameless flirt, with a heart of gold and only good intentions where Ezra is concerned. At 21, Dae has a good head on his shoulders, working at a job he loves and studying part time at college. He’s also close to his family, born to a Mexican mother and an African-American father who had him in their teens. Although Dae has never been in love, he watches his parents and hopes to emulate the love they share in his own life one day. The closer he and Ezra become the more he starts to believe he may have found that kind of love.

This story was such a perfect slow-burn romance. I loved that their relationship was first based on friendship and mutual trust before anything more romantic developed between the two. Dae was fabulously patient and open with Ezra, and I adored the way Ezra came alive with the help of Dae’s vibrant influence. They were very sweet together and my heart was left happy before long.

I’ve had a bit of a love affair recently with Christina Lee’s M/M stories and I must say that there is proving to be something about her third book in each of her series that just gets me, first with The Hardest Fall from the Roadmap To Your Heart series and now here with Paint the Stars – I loved them both.

I need to also make note of the gorgeous cover and beautifully fitting title – two enthusiastic thumbs up from me!

I hope we get more stories set in this series with this lovely group of friends.

Throughout the first two books in this series, we've gotten glimpses of Ezra, but he has largely remained a mystery. A mystery I couldn't wait to solve. I loved watching as his layers slowly peeled away to show us this shy and insecure young man who has been hurt in the past. Once he finally breaks free of that protective outer shell, he has so much to offer. So much personality, sweetness and love. Dae was an amazing character. He's never found anyone that's made him want what his parents have. A long term loving and committed relationship. Not until he meets Ezra. Ezra makes Dae feel things he wasn't sure he'd ever want.

Ezra and Dae fit so well together. I loved the progression of their relationship. The transition from friends to lovers felt natural and realistic. I adored getting to know them as they got to know each other. Watching Dae and Ezra slowly fall in love was a beautiful thing. The chemistry they shared came off the pages at you. The sex was not only hot, but passionate and loving as well.

I have loved this series. Christina and Nyrae collaborate together so well. Their writing style blends so seamlessly, while giving each character a defined personality. This story is filled with so much emotion. Sadness, heartbreak, hurt, laughter, friendship, acceptance and of course, love. I've loved all of the main characters, from all three books, and although this can definitely be read as a standalone, you don't want to miss getting to know Lucas and Gabriel or Connor and Jamie. It was great getting to catch up with them. I'm really hoping this isn't the last book in this series. I'm looking forward to so much more from these authors, both together and individually. I can't say enough how much I loved this book and I definitely recommend it!!!

4.5 stars!

This was my favorite book in this series - I read the fourth book first, so this is the last in the series I'm reading in order to read them all - and Ezra and Daevonte were my favorite couple in this series. I enjoyed the others a lot, but I simply loved these two together. They had great chemistry from the start and their scenes were wonderfully romantic, with amazing build up.

I enjoyed getting to know Ezra more in this book, because in the first two he's pretty stoic and grumpy and holds back a lot so we don't learn much about him.

As soon as Ezra mentioned Ben and what happened with them, I remembered Ben from the fourth book. He does come back into Ezra's life briefly in this, but the reason I took .5 stars off is I felt his "return" was handled a little poorly and clearly used to for drama that barely even lasted a few pages, so it felt unnecessary for him to even come back.

I guess it was okay to introduce him because he is one half the focus in the next book, but I feel like his character should have been utilized better and and stuck around for more than once scene if he was going to cause drama at all - and be introduced for the next book. It all felt very unnecessary - how oh of course Henry just happened to talk Ben into going for drinks instead of Ezra's apartment and of course this is the one night Ezra chooses to go out, and with Daevonte, and of course they run into each other. It was all very convenient.

But aside from that weak climax to the story, this was a great story overall and at least it got Ezra and Dae talking about their issues so they could move past them and get to a solid, HEA place.

I was happy with how this ended and this was an enjoyable story, with two great MC's who had awesome chemistry. Two big thumbs up from me!

3.5 stars – I have been reading M/M romances for a little over a year now, and Nyrae Dawn (Riley Hart) and Christina Lee are individually the two authors I’ve read the most books by. Since they wrote two previous collaborative works that I enjoyed (Touch the Sky, in fact, was one of my top-ten books of 2016), I was definitely looking forward to Paint the Stars. I loved the characters and the story found here, but while everything worked out the way it should have, the ending came across as too rushed for me to get the emotional impact I think the authors were intending it to have, and that ultimately made this the least favorite of the three books for me.

Ezra Greene grew up in a conservative and religious home in the Midwest where he felt like an imposter playing along with beliefs that didn’t fit with his own feelings. After escaping to West Hollywood, he has developed a good life for himself though his painting. Other than having a few close friends, he largely keeps to himself and comes across a bit of a grump. For a man who doesn’t care about hooking up and doesn’t fall in love easily, though, that’s safer than putting his heart out there to be squashed again the way his first love did. When he accepts a commission to paint another mural at a local holistic center, one of the part-time yoga instructors, Daevonte Randall, stays late while Ezra paints after hours. The arrangement works well for Daevonte because it gives him time to do homework for his college classes, and it also gives him a chance to flirt with the reserved painter he finds so fascinating.

The plot of Paint the Stars is almost entirely focused on the friendship and then relationship that forms between Ezra and Dae. It’s a well-developed and satisfying slow-burn romance caused largely by the double whammy of Ezra being demisexual—for those who aren’t familiar with the term, it refers to a person who does not experience sexual attraction to a person without first having developed a strong emotional connection—and his one and only serious relationship ending in heartbreak in one of the worst ways possible. Being uninterested in relationships, Daevonte starts off pursuing Ezra as an attempt to hook up with him, but Ezra shuts him down and eventually explains why. The authors handle this scenario perfectly and in a way that serves a dual purpose too: Ezra is not one to share much about himself, so this scene not only explains his character to Dae, it sets the stage for growth of feelings over the course of the story as Ezra slowly lets him in.

The characters really are what make this novel a worthwhile read. While some readers may find the pacing to be slow simply because they’re used to sexual tension causing intimacy to occur rather quickly in a romance, it’s the slow burn here that makes Ezra true to his character’s nature. Dae, too, is a great character and together they create an interesting pairing. Unlike Ezra, Dae is outgoing and flirty, but he’s also grounded. Whereas Ezra’s relationship with his parents are strained at best, Dae has nearly as good a relationship with his parents and extended family that a early twenty-something could hope for. And though Dae had never been interested in a serious relationship before, his parents were ideal role models in teaching him about love can be.

In addition to commending the authors for their portrayal of Ezra as a demisexual character, they also deserve praise for a positive rendering of Dae as a minority and mixed-race character, along with the fact that they in no way made race into an issue with anyone in the story. Dae’s parents’ story is far from ideal, but they worked hard to make sure Dae had not only their full love and support but also the means to provide him an adequate childhood. So often when racial differences are a part of a romance, they often play to stereotypes as a means to provide the character with an internal conflict. It was refreshing that this wasn’t the case here, and I wish more stories that used this trope would follow this example.

As great as I thought the characters and pacing of the story were, I have to admit I was disappointed with how quickly the resolution to the story’s primary conflict happened. I’m not going to go into detail because I don’t want to spoil it, but at the 80% point, Ezra is forced to confront something big from his past, and it puts the relationship between Ezra and Dae in jeopardy. The problem isn’t in how the situation is handled by each of the characters but in what the authors choose to present the reader to show how the resolution is done. Instead of giving the reader the scene showing Ezra directly working his way through the problem and the emotions surrounding it, the authors skip over it and only give a brief mention of Ezra having done so. The story ends at 91%, so as big of a challenge as it is to Ezra and Dae’s relationship, it’s over very quickly and with very little on-page angst over it. Unfortunately, this left me with the impression that it was too easy, and it really needed to be something strong to make the end result completely believable. Instead, I felt more of an “oh, okay” reaction. This fact is the sole reason why my rating is not significantly higher than it is.

With respect to the Free Fall series as a whole, Paint the Stars fits in wonderfully with the beautiful storytelling and engaging characters Christina Lee and Nyrae Dawn established in the first two books. As such, it makes a good finale for the set. In spite of the ending of this book being somewhat of a letdown for me, I heartily recommend the whole series to those who like romances that focus primarily on creating strong and believable attachments between the characters, for these authors are both masters at doing just that. Everything else they do beyond that is just gravy.

The author and/or publisher generously provided me a complimentary copy of Paint the Stars in exchange for this fair and honest review.

Fairly light read with a HEA. The drama isn’t too angsts. The story felt a bit formula for me. Nevertheless, I still enjoyed turning the pages. Think of it as a pallet cleanser between heavy books. 3.0 for friends first.

"Daevonte"???? Really???

It seems the only way readers are going to accept an Afro-Latino yoga instructor is to name him something identifiably ethnic. It's perfectly fine to name an Afro-Latino hero something like "Rick" or "Alex" or "Gabe".

I really need to teach a class on how to not name fail ethnic characters.

I love the way this series is maturing. Christina Lee and Nyrae Dawn have really found their groove as they bring us stories that have a distinct vibe. I love their approach to writing varied characters and topics and Paint the Stars is a great addition to the series.

Ever since Ezra was introduced in book one I've been dying to for him to get his own HEA. I'm pretty sure this is the first time I've read a story with a character on the ace spectrum and I'm not disappointed. I loved learning why Ezra engages (or doesn't) in sexual and emotional relationships. It kept me engaged while his backstory unfolded slowly as the story progressed. I'd say that I was fully invested in Ezra's character and saw the most growth in him.

Daevonte was also a likable character. I thought his personality was a pleasant contradiction to Ezra's quiet and broody nature. His lighthearted attitude and spiritual-like outlook brought a much needed lightness to the story especially as conflict arose. However, I did feel Dae's personal conflict was not as strong leaving him not as memorable as his counterpart.

I did feel some frustration early on. It seemed as though JUST as the crux of plot was being exposed, the chapter would end and the narration would change. Most times the switch between narration did not come within the same scene leaving me feeling unsatisfied. I think this was a stylistic choice to keep readers engaged but I can't say it's one I enjoy.

HOWEVER, something just...shifted, somewhere in the middle and I couldn't put the book down. The banter between Ezra and Dae was really funny. Their budding friendship was enjoyable to experience and their exploration into their sexual attraction had such an incredible slow burn. I was singing praises when they finally got going under the covers and each scene just got hotter and hotter. Their sexual chemistry was delicious and was only heightened by their emotional bond.

I'd say Paint the Stars is the most enjoyable of the series for me. While they each bring their own message I feel this is the most energetic, romantic and relatable. I recommend.

Fans of this series know Ezra--the previous room mate of Gabriel and then Conner. He's the quiet, broody, controlled artist who keeps to himself and shows his passion with his paints. He doesn't do hook ups or relationships, and he does no put himself out there. His sexuality is something that has been an issue for him, and his past has made him wary of trusting people, but he has his core group of friends that know more about him than anyone else does.

Daevonte is a younger college student and yoga/meditation instructor at the holistic center where Ezra is painting a mural. Dae is fun, vibrant, clever, flirty, and persistent. He is used to having casual sex and nothing serious. He pushes and challenges Ezra, and tries to hook up with him. But as Ezra begins to open up a bit more about his life, Dae realizes that he would rather keep him as a friend rather than push him to hard and make him uncomfortable.

But the more time they spend getting to know each other, the more an attraction grows--on both sides. And Ezra begins to feel more comfortable in showing physical affection, as well as letting him in more. Their interactions are sweet, genuine, and tentative. But these two could light up the page with just kisses.

Dae never planned on anything serious, and certainly not love. His parents have given him a good example of how young love can be sustained with commitment and work. But he is young and somewhat afraid of going all in with Ezra who still has a tendency to keep him at arm's length. And Ezra still has fears and insecurities about his previous relationship and his family's religious background.

This is a slow burn story of friendship that turns into more. But both have fears that hold them back or make them wary. It's intense, tender, passionate, and emotional as they try to navigate a new relationship together that neither saw coming.

They could bring out the best in the other, but sometimes it was tempered by fear. Dae never had experienced feelings for anyone before, so it was a whole new experience for him. But Ezra made him crave more. He pushed Ezra out of his comfort zone, brought him passion, and made him laugh and feel alive. But he could also center him. Their connection built slowly over time, and their physical attraction and feelings followed gradually.

But the more connected and serious they become, the easier it is to be more fearful and insecure about the fact that they could lose it or that the other one does not feel the same. So they have to figure out what they want and need to be able to effectively communicate it.

All of Ezra's friends from the previous books are accounted for--Gabriel and Lucas, Conner and Jamie, and Henry. I like the fun dynamics of this group, and how they try to support each other despite their differences and issues. Dae's best friend, Maria, and both of their families are also featured. Their families really influenced both of the guys in various ways and shaped the men they were becoming.

This story was slow paced and a slow burn, but it was easy to become invested in them and I really liked both of them. I was already intrigued by Ezra, so was glad to see his layers peeled back. They were opposites, but also balanced each other. They could share their individual interests and make them common ground. It was not overly angsty, but there were challenges to face. It was more about emotional connection than sex, but it was also passionate and intense. It was a journey for both of them to find acceptance, trust, fight fears, and embrace life.

Both of the author's writing styles flowed seamlessly together in this dual point of view story. I love the title and how the stars and light theme was woven into the story.

I was gifted a copy in exchange for an honest review.

It comes as no surprise, I adored this book.

I love Dae but I'm absolutely in love with Ezra.

There's a lot about Ezra that hit too close to my own feelings. I can relate with I'm so much, specially when it comes to being quiet and so antisocial. Like Ezra, I'd rather be at home chilling and watching some Netflix, reading a book and just enjoying the quiet, than going out and being around people.

Like him, I do go out but it drains me fast. Also trust issues and other stuff.

Reading about Ezra really did something to me.

I was also really fucking nice reading about a Demisexual character. <3

Dae is adorable. I absolutely love his relationship with his family. It's absolutely beautiful but at the same time completely alien to me. I don't relate at all.

Ezra and Dae are so amazing together.

It was also really nice seeing Jamie, Gabriel, Lucas and Conner but I have to shamefully admite that I don't remember them all that well.

I really need to reread their books and fix this. I hate not remember characters and stories I love.

Books like this, hit me way too hard sometimes and leave me to deal with a big identity crises.

Wow! This completely blindsided me. I absolutely loved Ezra and Dae. The authors did a fantastic job depicting a demisexual character in a way that seemed genuine. The relationship between the characters was the best kind of slow burn and it evolved into intimate scenes full of emotion and passion.

Recommend!

This by far was my favorite in the series. Christina Lee and Nyrae Dawn knocked it out of the park. The slow build of intimacy between Ezra and Dae mesmerized me. Ezra was very introverted from a broken heart caused by a past love. Cautiously he lived his life, isolating himself and keeping his heart locked up, until Dae showed up. With his out going, flirty personality he slowly pulled Ezra out of his shell. Starting with a friendship that built to so much more.
This book had such sensuality, tenderness and mind-blowing kisses making my toes curl in the build up of anticipation. There is a scene when Ezra is teaching Dae to paint where I nearly combusted. I could read that over and over with it's electric sparking chemistry making me suck in my breath. I happened to be listening to Love Me Like You Do by Elle Goulding during that scene and it was like I was a voyeur in that moment. *fans self*
All in all a fantastic book by these two that I highly recommend. I hope they aren't done cowriting" I need more!!

I received an ARC from the author for an honest review.

I'm glad I didn't give up on this series. This book was MUCH better than its predecessor which was a snoozefest for me.

The thing I liked most about this book was the authentic progression of the relationship between Dae and Ezra. Their emotional connection felt authentic and I rooted for them till they finally got their HEA. Dae was funny, exciting and generally had a good heart. He helped bring grumpy, standoffish and closed off Ezra out of his shell.

Out of the two,I allied most with Ezra because we kind of have the same principles when it comes to intimacy so reading about such a character was frankly refreshing for me.

One thing that almost messed it up was the little bit of drama with the ex. I felt that wasn't really necessary and the book could've done without it.*shrugs*

Aside that however, I really enjoyed this book.
