After being shot down by the Taliban on a Special Operations mission, a Navy pilot and Navy SEAL rescue a beautiful humanitarian doctor. While the three of them evade capture in a race for their lives across northern Pakistan, the two former boyhood friends heal a 10-year breach, and the pilot and doctor find a way to let go of their painful pasts to find love.

The only two survivors of a helicopter crash on Pakistani soil, Lieutenant Commander Jason “Casanova” Vanderby and Petty Officer Shane “Mad Dog” Madden barely escape the smoking wreckage of their helo and hike to a nearby aid station for help. The head doctor, Farrin Barr, has recently evacuated all staff from the facility, leaving her alone to deal with the two military men…and the terrorist horde hunting them.

Chased across northern Pakistan in a race for their lives, Jason and Farrin end up running from their own personal demons as much as from the enemy pursuing them. For Jason, being around his childhood friend, Shane, awakens unwelcome memories of an abusive past, while Farrin is haunted by a decision she made that forever changed her life.

In the midst of the chaos, both mental and physical, no one is more surprised by the attraction forming between Jason and Farrin than they are. Both have lived their lives closed off to relationships, unable to let go of the memories that haunt them. But just when they find the courage to move forward together, people from both of their pasts come back and threaten to destroy the new foundations of their love.

Content guidelines: Contains profanity and adult situations. Sensitive readers might find a scene depicting the death of a pet upsetting. This is a standalone novel.

This book is AMAZING!!!

The love, the action, the imagery, the plot, EVERYTHING was just so well done, which is typical of Tracy's work!

Just like with the other books in this series (which don't necessarily need to be read to enjoy this one, although I thin you'd love those too!) , it's obvious just how much research went into making the military and geographical aspects of this book as accurate as possible. I know next to nothing about either, but the way the book was written makes everything SO easy to understand. She also includes a glossary to help with uncommon words, phrases and acronyms, which was very much appreciated!

This book was seriously such a well-written military suspense that I would HIGHLY recommend this to non-romance readers as well. Granted, the element of love is prevalent towards the latter half of the book, but this book is just THAT good!

That being said, and true to form for a military story, this book is graphic and deals with issues that may not be for everybody. But have I mentioned how fantastic this book is?!

I loved the love and I loved the ending and I loved the characters and I would LOVE to read a book about Shane next!!! (This series is SO good!!!)

Not 100% sure what I thought this would be, but it certainly surprised me from the first page to the last one.

The help they find is a Doctor Farrin Barr who just evacuated the staff and now has to deal with Jason and Shane, and lets not forget the terrorist who are hunting them down..
As they are chased across Pakistan in a race to save their lives, both Jason and Farrin are running from their own demons. For Jason being around Shane awaken memories of an abusive past, while Farrin is haunted by a decision she made that will forever change her life.
Amidst all of this they are both surprised by the attraction that is forming between then. Will these two be able to put their past behind them and enjoy the love that has blossomed between them.

“Man Down” by Tracy Tappan is Book 3 in the ‘Wings of Gold’ series, that is first and foremost military fiction, with some romance interspersed. This particular tale focuses on Lieutenant Commander Jason Vanderby as he tries to survive after being blindsided by a horrific attack. He is joined in his arduous journey by his estranged former best friend, Shane Madden, and Dr. Farrin Barr. They have to depend on each other through a crucible of challenges, and survive long enough to work through their past and present traumas in order to have any kind of meaningful future.

This is a thrill-filled, suspenseful tale that starts with a description of the intense challenges faced to become a SEAL and ratchets up higher and higher throughout the story. Told through three points of view, this glimpse of the stamina and courage required to survive in a war zone is full of violence and savagery yet is leavened by the emotion and complicated relationships shared by the three main characters. The history between the two males, Jason and Shane, is revealed gradually in a counterpoint to the revelations of Farrin’s past while the intense action accompanying their struggle for survival keeps the reader invested in their story.

I love the realism this author brings to her stories even as I ache at the experiences that form the framework for her repertoire. The ability to draw the reader in and allow insight into the daily tragedies and heartbreak that is compartmentalized to allow these brave soldiers to continue fighting for our freedom and safety is a remarkable gift that she shares unstintingly. Those who have triggers should be forewarned that there is considerable grisly violence, including a heartwrenching execution of a family pet.

This is a story that you want to start only if you have plenty of time, because once you start, you will be immersed in a thrilling and vivid adventure that will keep you up late at night while you cheer, groan, and bite your nails, willing things to turn out positively. Those unfamiliar with the series will have no problem reading this as a stand-alone story, but will undoubtedly be gladdened to discover there are more alpha males to read about when this book is finished. Enjoy the adventure, I am sure there are plenty more to look forward to!

Wow! This book is jam packed full of explosive action and entertainment!

There is so much going on in this book that I was completely engaged and couldn’t put the book down!

This book is about two hot Navy SEALS, Jason “Casanova,” and Shane “Mad Dog,” who survive a helicopter crash in Pakistan after a mission goes terribly wrong. They then go searching for medical assistance as Shane is injured and they come across Dr. Farrin Barr. Dr. Farrin Barr happens to be the only doctor on site as the rest of the staff had been evacuated. It isn’t long before these three are bonded together in ways they never imagined. The chase is on as they are being hunted down by a terrorist. Jason, Shane, and Farrin must work together to make it out alive and escape the terrorist that is chasing them across the country. When the stakes are high and emotions are all over the place it isn’t too crazy that something like fear would turn into romance.

This book has action, suspense, mystery, intrigue, romance, comedy, and so much more!

This book touches on love, romance, friendship, courage, bravery, overcoming obstacles, second chances, and new beginnings.

I really liked the main characters, Jason, Shane, and Farrin. They were well developed, likable, and relatable.

Both Jason and Farrin bring some heavy baggage to the relationship. However, I think it brings them closer together instead of causing drama that could tear them apart.

Both Jason and Farrin are very stubborn and have a hard time trusting and letting people in. This common ground helps them relate, but their walls aren’t easy to drop.

This book was well researched and very realistic. It is clear Ms. Tappan is familiar with military procedures, jargon, and the Middle East. Ms. Tappan does state that she toned down the jargon, but it is a military book and they use a lot of code and acronyms. To help the reader not get lost or confused a glossary was included at the back of the book. I thought this was a great idea as it allowed for the reader to easily obtain the translation or a more in-depth understanding at their own discretion.

I am a huge animal lover and former dog trainer for Guide Dogs for the Blind. So I was very hesitant on reading this book as there is a horrific scene depicting the execution of a pet. I knew this scene was coming, but I wasn’t sure how I would handle it. My beloved cat very recently died and I am still struggling with this heartache every day. With that said, as I reached said scene I decided to just skip over it – I couldn’t bring myself to read those passages. So I can’t tell you if they were written respectively or to what level or degree they reached. However, the rest of the book was well written and tasteful that I’d imagine the author was considerate and courteous during those disturbing scenes as well.

This book is book three in the Wings of Gold book series. Although the characters seem to intertwine throughout the series, it seems each book can be read on it's own. But why would you want to? We're talking about hot military romance books that are also provide action, suspense, and intrigue! This is the first book I've read in the series and from this author, but I will definitely be looking into the rest of the series and perhaps even other works from Ms. Tappan.

All in all, I enjoyed reading this book and would absolutely recommend it to anyone interested in an exciting and intriguing military romance book.

Please note that this book does contain profanity and adult situations that may not be appropriate for younger readers or those that would be offended by those actions. Also, as previously mentioned, this book contains that gruesome scene that depicts the death of a pet.

If this book didn’t contain that horrific scene I would have not been able to give this book anything less than five stars. Unfortunately, the animal lover in me thinks this scene could have been omitted or changed and still been effective in getting the point across. Without providing too much detail, maybe it wouldn’t have been as strong of a message without this scene. However, I must admit that I was impressed with the character’s reaction and how they handled the situation, it showed true character. Regardless, the overall story was very intriguing, kept me entertained, and was a fun and exciting read!

This is the 3rd full book but 5th book in the series.

This series is better if you read the entire series and not standalone. You have met the hero and heroine in the past few books.

If you need a small blurb about what this story is about read above the reviews.

The book actually starts with the last bit in the last book- even repeating some of the things that happen. This one centers on a different hero and heroine though. After the hero and all but one other member are lost on the helicopter, they get out after shooting some of the bad guys. However, in getting away from the bad guys, one of the guys gets shot three (yes three!) times.

Our hero and the guy who survives were childhood best friends but had a falling out after BUDS and haven't spoken to the other in nearly 10 years. Throughout the book they take out back to their childhood. The eventually get back to the base only to find its mainly abandoned.

Our heroine, shipped everyone else off base because her gut feeling didn't like what was coming, so to have two of the military men show up was a shock as everything thought they were dead. The get the injured soldier into surgery and to get the bullets out. Soon after even the people who where left behind disappear except for the military people including her, so they gather what they can and leave as quickly as they can which isn't easily with someone who just had surgery.

Over the next number of days, the hero and heroine get to know more about each other and why the two men had a falling out. By the time they get nearer to help, they are realizing they love one another. However, will it be enough? Will they make it back to the base? Will the injured soldier make it or die? Can they overcome the traumas of their childhoods?

This was a very interesting read and you just wanted to keep going. You really got invested with all 3 of the characters because you got to know them all and their struggles. I felt the author could have gone a bit more into things that happened with the female, but it was ok.

All the characters were strong but also weak when they needed to be. They learned they could depend upon each other which was a great lesson. They also got to know who they couldn't trust and to talk about things.

This is the best book of the series. I can't wait for the next ones. I usually wait until I have all the books in a series before reading, but I never realized this was a huge series, so now I have to wait. *grumble*

My Review:
I had no idea what to expect going into this novel, since I had never read this author before, but I get in the mood for a good military romance, and OMG...this was a fantastic one!!

So, this is not your typical romance novel. In fact, it's quite a ways into the book before the heroine even appears on the page because this book is about so much more than the romance (although I adored the romance, too).

This book starts with a friendship. Jason and Shane met when they were children. Jason was the kid born with the silver spoon in his mouth, Shane was the son of the maid. On the surface they had nothing in common. But digging deeper, these two have a much tighter bond than a person would expect because they both had deplorable fathers. They connected through that and that connection didn't waver all the way through their very trying teenage years (when they both ended up on their own at 16) and into the Navy. But it was on the day of graduating from BUDS as SEALS that their connection severed.

The real meat of the story takes place ten years after that, but there are tons of flashbacks throughout to show just what these guys meant to one another. But 10 years later, they haven't spoken when the two are the only survivors of a helicopter crash. The evacuate to a medical aide hospital in Afghanistan where they meet Farrin...a doctor working at the hospital although she's evacuated almost everyone with the fighting nearby (fighting because of their mission).

When they arrive she's virtually alone and then things go tits up from there and all three are on the run for their lives.

It's a wonderful book with incredibly well-written suspense. Farrin isn't without her own demons and her story just added to the wonderful depth of the entire book.

I loved every moment of reading this one and honestly only put it down to sleep once I started it (and only did that because there was no way I could stay up all night to finish it). Now I'm stalking Tracy Tappan's author pages wondering when Shane's story is coming, because I want it yesterday.

If you like tough, gritty, wonderfully emotional military romantic suspense, I highly recommend this one!

Wow, what a ride! Really love this series, each book better than the last, but this one is the best! It is quite a rollercoaster. I did something with this book I have never done before. I started writing my review when I was only 1/3 of the way through. I really like that Tracy Tappan infuses her work with actual military jargon and accurate depiction of military actions. As the wife of a former Navy sailor, I really can identify with that aspect of her work.

Jason and Farrin are complex characters who overcome severe pasts to find love in each other. It was fate that brought these two together. If not for the circumstances they went through, they would not have had the opportunity to let their feelings develop for each other.

Both have pasts which spill over onto their present day experiences. Reading about those pasts left me almost gasping for breath. My heart broke in places which brought tears to my eyes. It was quite a pleasure to be there to watch these two work through their issues to reach their HEA.

All the stories in the Wings of Gold series are well written and worth the read. I can’t wait to read Shane’s story next.

Each story has a tie in to each other, but they all work as a standalone. You can read “Man Down” by itself and be thoroughly satisfied. However, I highly recommend you read the whole series.

I received an ARC for an honest, unbiased review.

While both books one and two, Beyond the Call of Duty and Allied Operation, of the Wings of Gold series were intense, Man Down was intensity on steroids. Honestly, I think I held my breath awaiting what would happen next more than two thirds of the time while reading it. Tracy Tappan did a phenomenal job writing this story. Jason, Farrin and Shane's trek through Pakistan while being hunted by insurgents will keep you riveted. The suspense is heart pounding, the danger is ever present and the action is non-stop but underneath it all is a love story between two people who have so much emotional baggage between them it's a wonder they can put one foot in front of the other much less lead successful, productive lives. This book is a MUST read.

Wow. After reading this book, I want to go hug a SEAL. Man Down just thrusts you immediately into hell-Hell Week for a SEAL wannabe- that is. The reader gets a hard core, realistic taste of the strength of character it takes to become a Navy SEAL. Right there, as a reader, I got hooked. Very well done flashbacks on the early lives of Jason, Farrin, and Shane give you hints of the drive, passions and motivations that allowed these characters to succeed (and survive) where a lesser person absolutely wouldn't. At first, I was scratching my head and questioning the logic behind the extreme drama between Jason/Shane, but as the flashbacks developed, my questions were more than satisfied. (I don't want to spoil the story with more in depth, so just be patient and you'll understand).
This story about Jason and Shane is also a great tie in to the rest of the Wings of Gold Series. While reading, I kind of realized (duh) that all the Wing of Gold stories take place at the same time. Each books just focuses on different actions occurring at that time. So if you read the previous stories and said-oh, I wonder what happened to that person, etc. ..., get excited to actually find out! This different action POV within a familiar story line is brilliant and so satisfying. I also have to say (with a big goofy smile on my face) that I learned a few new phrases while reading this book:) I don't know if they are actual military slang or not, but they are graphically brilliant (you'll see & agree) : i.e. technicolor yawn, squirters, and "hershey's" references that I can't scrub from my mind. Ms. Tappen had me inappropriately and guiltily grinning during some very intense scenes due to her terminology. And certain descriptive moments, OMG, majorly squirm worthy. There is one sexy nonsexual scene where Farrin and Jason are squished together under a desk that made me both smirk and cringe for Jason.
Man Down has everything you could want in a book. It's gritty and authentic during the military scenes without being too technical for the reader (the military glossary provided is unobtrusively helpful and easy to refer to). The plot is woven so skillfully (between past and present) that your questions are answered before you get too anxious -Ms. Tappen definitely knows when and how to "lead" you through the story. Your emotions will be dragged through the gamut while reading this book! I think the best part is the appeal to many different types of readers. There is friendship, hardship, military action, current affair references and times that make you say "oh s**t", and hot sex that is both realistic and appropriately placed (no stupid/unprotected sex at inappropriate times), and of course a HEA that fits.
This is a must read story.
I really cannot express how much I love this series. It does justice to all the men and women in our armed forces. A big THANK YOU to them for their service!

How many times will I say that this series is the best Military Romance I have ever read. The stories are realistic. The action is realistic and the romance is hot !! Truly I have Read good books that I felt should be made into movies, however this series should top the list. The junk that is coming out of Hollywood can't in anyway compare to this series. Wake up Hollywood!! Read this author and make movies about this series. It'll be a blockbuster!!

Last in the series

Tracy has a way of writing that makes you connect to all the characters and route for them even when they are doing dumb things. I loved this series but this book was my favorite. Two people who could have turned out very differently but who overcome and find each other. The action is exciting and the feelings were raw at points. I highly recommend this series but especially this book.

Great Series!

I read a lot. With that said, this book was hands above other military romance novels I've read. There is a great plot, a mission, characters with depth. I love that the story interweaves several stories. This series is well developed and keeps your interest from book one to three. Would like to see how Shane and Kitty end up.

Lost in the series

I loved the previous books in this series+ and the author was funny+ characters entertains+ and good drama and plots-
Too much of a good thing. Man Down is boring and feels like the writer was on a deadline, I completely gave up a little past half way. Could not make it through this one,

This is the 3rd book in the series, and boy does Tracy Tappan just keep on getting better as she digs into the series. I burnt the candle at both ends to read this in as littlest time possible. Ergo that means 2 x 3amer's on a work day - see that's how much I loved the story.

Has all the feels, attraction, temptation, denial, sabotage, betrayal, love I could just keep on going on.

Just when you think they have escaped the already tangled web, she weaves into the story another challenge.

Must read if you enjoy military reads.
