Everything you need to use your handplanes! No woodworking tool is more satisfying, quick and precise to use than a handplane. Planes can process timber in its rough state, bring boards up to a glimmering smoothness, cut rabbets, dados, grooves and other joints, and trim wood with a precision that has yet to be matched by power tools. Yet many woodworkers--both beginners and professionals--are intimidated by handplanes. This book is here to set the record straight.Handplane Essentials contains everything you need to choose the right plane for your project (and for your budget), sharpen it and use it successfully. Compiled from more than 15 years of the author's writings on the subject of handplanes in magazines, trade journals and blogs, this book is an indispensable guide for woodworkers. This revised edition includes 14 new articles as well as new and updated tool reviews.

It’s the kind of guide you’ll return to again and again, and one that elevates your understanding and appreciation of the craft.
This is a book that I didn't want to end. Great background on hand planes from anchors to planes that cost far more than my first car. I enjoyed the easy rhythm in Chris's writing that brought out very detailed explanations on each type of plane. After reading this book I am feeling more prepared to make or rebuild what I need for my growth in woodworking.
I am keeping this book for future reference and, likely, just to reread for fun.
Great book that gives both a great overview of the use of hand planes, including which one is best for the job, how to set them up and using proper technique, among other things. I highly recommend reading through this book- especially if you’re a beginner. It is an incredible reference that you can come back to as your woodworking journey evolves or even if you’re just interested in some of the history of hand tool woodworking. You can never go wrong with anything written by Chris Schwarz.
