One Bad Apple: A Mystery Mini

Rate this book
When a virus is unleashed on the Department of Defense’s computers, programmer Marshall “The Worm” Fenwick is certain he’ll be blamed. After all, it’s an act of cyber-vandalism worthy of a man with a history of hacking, a false accusation that Marshall's never been able to live down. Marshall knows he didn’t do it. It had to be someone else at ApplCart, the virus protection company he works for. Marshall can arrest the damage and escape going down for the crime himself if he can find—and find it in time—the One Bad Apple among the company’s employees.

I wanted to try this mini-mystery since I loved "Murder By The Book", also a mini by this author. This was cute and the character names made it fun, but it was more of a straight mystery that could have used more pages, while the other was a clever play on names for the quick conclusion.

Nice and quick and an interesting main character who could be good for future mysteries.

This is the second short story I have read by this author and she seems to have it down on creating a story that is complete and within only a few pages (ok 19 to be exact).

Worm, aka Marshall, writes viruses for a anti-virus protection company so they can test their software and create anti-viruses against anything someone puts out there. However, his latest virus has hit the DOD and he has no idea why or who might have unleashed it on the government.

Granted there are not a lot of characters so you might be able to figure it out, but there are some twists at the end that even I didn't expect! I did wonder if someone from his past might be involved...but I won't say yes or no, you'll have to read it to find out.

Great short story and this is another one that could spin off several more short stories tied to computer viruses.

Devorah Fox’s short thriller One Bad Apple was an interesting mystery. When an ex-hacker discovers a conspiracy to use his virus for personal revenge, he must act quickly to clear his name. Though maybe a bit confusing for anyone not versed in computers, One Bad Apple was an interesting and intriguing read with good twists. //end of line

I really enjoyed this book especially at the end when worm turned the tables on his boss. But I also liked the scam she was pulling too-it took guts, planning and I think more than a few brains. I would love to read more from Devorah Fox.
