Exhilarating, heartbreaking and beautiful...three words I would use to describe Jennifer Ryder's latest novel, Tandem. I'm not going to go into too much detail, because I don't want to give anything away and this is the kind of story you want to go into without knowing too much in advance. The writing is flawless, the story being told between 'now' and 'then' presented without fault. Never once did I get bored with the backstory or lost in the transition between past and present. Kalani and Kyle are two perfectly flawed people drawn together by tragedy and fate. Simply stunning. Jennifer's experience and talent is prevalent in every page of this book. 5 stunning stars.

ARC received for an honest review

Geronimo!

It has been a while since we have had a book from Jennifer Ryder, and she has jumped right back into the fray with the wonderful Tandem.

Beautifully developed characters, a wonderfully flowing story, Kyle and Kalani's story had me gripped from the first word to the last.

Their story is not an easy one. Both are emotionally broken, making it through the day but struggling. As we learn more (I don't want to spoil anything) my heart broke for them both.

I love the wit and the play between them, and there is that spark that just can't be denied.

I love that they had more of a slow burn going rather than jumping right into bed with each other - as much as they wanted too. Their story warranted them going for so much more.

Tandem is the kind of story you need to throw yourself into, dive right in and just enjoy.

I can't wait for more from Ms Ryder.

Is it possible for a book to leave you feeling word drunk? Because this one did that.

The emotions, the release, how far Kyle and Kalani came in this book ... AMAZING.

A slow build that grew into a roaring fire. Everything that happened did so for a reason and not some weird created drama.

This book will be a hard one to let go. Five stars.

Ms Ryder delivers the goods yet again, in a spin-off novel from the Spark series. Finely drawn characters, ripping humour and typically sizzling scenes all conspire to deliver a great read, perfect for summer beach holidays. It's not all happy days for the characters though - Ms Ryder delves deeply into the nature of grief, and how we deal with it (or don't deal with it). Definitely makes you feel grateful for everything you hold dear in life. Another winner from one of Australia's best writers in the contemporary romance genre.

Title: Tandem
Series: Standalone
Author: Jennifer Ryder
Release date: March 20, 2018
Cliffhanger: No
HEA

This book was just okay for me. It wasn't especially horrible, but I was really hoping to feel more angst and emotion based on the blurb. As much as I tried to enjoy it, there was something missing and it failed to hit that mark.

Both main characters are dealing with loss and grief and handling it in their own separate unhealthy ways. In the beginning of the book, we aren't given all of the facts of their history. This is told through dual POV flashbacks, and we slowly learn the tragedy and struggles they've both endured. The flashbacks were alternated with the present tense through the book up until the last 95%. Honestly this didn't make much sense to me. I didn't particularly need to know that much about their past relationships in order to move the plot forward. I would rather have spent more time seeing Kyle and Kalani's relationship build in the present tense rather than wade through unnecessary details of the past. For example,

One thing I liked about Kyle was that he was respectful of Kalani from the very beginning. He wanted to take his time getting to know her, and even slowed things down physically when they started to get heated at one point. However, despite his sweetness towards her, and his patience in helping her with her anxiety issues, there was a clear disconnect towards their romance on my part.

Kyle is described as the "Gigolo of the skies" in the blurb. He actually prostitutes himself with female skydiving clients who want an extra rush after their freefall jump in the sky. I'm pretty well over manwhores in general in my books, but the blurb implied an angsty read so I was willing to roll with it. However, this aspect of the plot was a total miss for me. I've read a similar trope before in other books that have worked out okay, but in this case the motivation/explanation was flimsy at best. Selling your body because

My inability to properly engage with the couple I think stemmed from the jarring structure, and the characterization that didn't have the depth I was looking for. Don't let me be the judge though. The ratings are very positive for Tandem for the most part, so if you're thinking of reading this, take the leap and give it a chance.

Wow, this was an emotional roller coaster of a ride! I feel emotionally drained but it was worth it. In a world where mental health still has a stigma attached to it, this is a book that is needed. There is a need for more understanding and less judgement. Mental ill health can easily be hidden but for Kalani it has seeped into every part of her life after experiencing a trauma of epic proportions that took half of her family from her. It left her depressed, anxious, self harming and unable to do anything or leave the house.

Over time and with the help of her therapist, she starts to rebuild her life. Putting together a 'bucket' list she begins to face her fears and decides to take the plunge with sky diving.

Kyle, her tandem diver, has his own issues. He is working through these with his random hook-ups with with his clients after they have completed their sky dive. He has experienced grief like no other. With no judgement, lots of patience and understanding he provides a healing balm to Kalani to help her confront her fears.

There needs to be more people like Kyle in the world who are supportive, non-judgemental who understand and who help.

Despite this being a difficult read, it is one of hope and healing and there was a beauty in their journey together. This is a book that will remain with me for a long time to come. It is likely to be one of the best reads of the year. A definite must read.

Holy cow! WOW WOW WOW!

This story blew me away. I needed a day to absorb what I had just read before I could even fathom writing a review.. I just… I am so excited for Ms Ryder. I have loved all of her books so far but this is her best yet.
She has taken two completely broken souls, two people that have experienced tragedy beyond what anyone should ever endure in a lifetime, and she has sent them on a journey that neither of them expected, but both of them needed and craved.

This is not a book you want to speed read, you need to take your time with it, connect with the characters and feel their story in your soul. There were moments in this book where I thought I knew which direction it was going in only to flip over to the next page and see I had got it so wrong! I don’t think these characters ever did anything I expected them to do.
The rawness and honesty between Kalani and Kyle is refreshing and beautiful. It is stripped right back and the emotion just pours off the page.

There are the usual elements that make a good romance, sexy, flirty, angst, action but this book just has so much more. It is hard to describe with words how amazing this story really is, I think it is one of those book journeys you just need to experience for yourself. I will warn you though if you are an emotional reader like me, you might want to keep some tissues handy because you may really need them.

The only word I can think of to describe this book is AMAZING!

4 1/2 out of 5 stars

This story really was one I won’t soon forget. Kalani and Kyle have heartbreaking pasts that they are both almost scared to overcome. They are holding back from the world until their paths cross and they can’t hold back from each other.

There were several scenes in the book that I absolutely fell in love with, but one of my favorites was when she forced him to ask for a kiss. It was sweet and romantic and from his point of view, I was sold on Kyle forever! He was so sweet about wanting her to make him ask and making sure she was okay with it before he followed through.

The best quote from the story isn't said aloud, but speaks volumes about the storyline and what I got out of it. It takes place three-fourths of the way through the novel when Kyle is trying to figure out how they came together and what their lives are to be like. His thoughts:

I don’t know what brought the two of us together, but I’m grateful that somehow, we found each other. Maybe between the two of us, we can be whole.

Really this is just the crux of the story and without giving anything away, I am happy to say that this book will be on my favorite list for some time to come!

Tandem was a fantastic story. It was emotional, heartbreaking and ultimately uplifting as we experience the traumatic pasts of both Kalani and Kyle and how they are changed and shaped by their tragedies. I thought their connection was fiery and I could not get enough.

Known as the "Gigolo of the Skies", Kyle Kingston-Moore loves the freedom his skydiving business provides. He has his pick of women and has no responsibilities tying him down. A motto he has taken to heart after a past tragedy: No connections, no emotions, no pain. But when Kalani Hart tries to break free of debilitating fears after a trauma from her own past, sparks fly and connections form. But can these two let go of their past baggage and give their future a shot?

I thought this story was great. Their banter was fun and their connection strong. I love that they took a chance on one another after being so badly hurt. While I liked this story the alternating time jumps from the past to the present threw me as I felt it was somewhat confusing and disruptive. All in all, Tandem was a solid 4 star read! ~Ratula

I was looking forward to this book and I was not disappointed. This is the story of two people who have experienced the unthinkable. Each having dealt with too much heartache for one person. Was it faith that brought them together? Maybe......
From the moment they meet you can feel it. They are meant to be together.
Kyle. Never did he think he would feel like this again after what he’s gone through. But there she was. So pure and innocent. Will his past be too much of an obstacle?
Kalani. Desperate to feel normal again she starts with the first thing on her bucket list. Thats when she meets him. Little does she know he might just be the one who could show her the way.
Absolutely loved this story. Love the characters. The emotions so real. Another “couldn’t put it down” read from Jennifer. 5 stars by far.

Wow!! This book was incredible!! It had me hooked from the first chapter to the last!! Kalani and Kyles story had my insides all twisted around!! They had amazing chemistry from the start and loved the way they progressed and moved on together. Lots of heartache in this book and some readers will really identify with the struggles the couple face. This book will definitely stay with me for a while and I love it when a book can do that to me!! Excellent writing and the sexiest scenes I’ve read in a while!!

Jump right into this book and prepare for your emotions to nosedive. This is an incredibly well written book with a story line that will rip out your heart, not once but twice. It is brutal in it's description of the incidents that transpire to make the lead characters who they are now. The pain and suffering they have to endure and how each of them handle this pain, or how they don't handle it. It's about taking one step at a time, one foot in front of the other while trying to move forward with their lives. But how does one move forward after the pain they have suffered? Two broken people, two totally different situations, two souls meant to meet, to engage, to heal the other. Two broken hearts that meet the person who will heal their heart.

The characters are so very well written and quite well defined and complex. They are really likable and endearing and you will find yourself hoping beyond hope that they will find their Happily Ever After.

Kyle is handsome and runs a successful skydiving/plane tour company. He loves skydiving, he finds his peace while falling from the sky. His pain is deep and he works and works just to help keep that pain at bay.

Kalani is a beauty, smart and sexy young woman who is not only a victim, but has witnessed something that has forever changed her life, so much so that she is unable to leave her home, has panic attacks, and cannot find it in her to return to work, her boyfriend or her friends. Add insult to injury, her boyfriend does the unforgivable.

Kalani makes a bucket list...things that she has to do to help her move forward, first on the list, skydive! Let the healing begin. I don't want to say more than this because you really need to read this book to get the full effect, the full force of the emotions that will hit you. Yes you will need a few tissues, but once the healing begins, well a few giggles are to be had and maybe you may need a fan every now and then.

This is a great read and I highly recommend this book!

Tandem by Jennifer Ryder is a standalone spin off to the Spark series. The title Tandem is so apt for more then the obvious reasons. It was a fabulous choice of title.
I loved this book. I've not yet read the Spark series but I can't wait to go back and read them all now.
The story structure was interesting, duel pov and bounces from past to present slowly revealing events from the past which forms the person they are in the present. Doing it that way provides the opportunity for our empathy to grow as we get to know their former selves and makes the inevitable turning points more intense and emotional because you grow to love these people and I adored both Kyle and Kalani. I got such a sense of pride following on their journeys and seeing them accomplish things. Knowing where they have had to come from, They are portrayed as remarkably strong people.
Tandem was such a great reading experience, I can't say I've had a book hangover for a while, but I'm definitely feeling it with this one.
I voluntarily reviewed this advanced reader copy and I have not been compensated in any way.

This has to be one of my favourite reads of all time. It was a beautifully heartbreaking story that had beautiful characters and well written story. This story took me a few days to read because there is a lot of emotion written throughout the story and the backstories of these characters are very real and heartbreaking. I connected a lot with this story and especially with Kalani.

Kalani was a strong character that had so much love for the people around her. She went through so much heartbreak and emotion, but she still remained this strong character despite her struggles. I found her to be an inspiring character that I really connected with.

Kyle I absolutely loved in this story not only because of how incredible sexy he was, but, the way he was with Kalani. The way be cared for her and looked after her was so incredible sweet. There were times were my heart broke and I had tears pouring down my face form the pain that Kyle goes through in his life.

Tandem is about Kyle and Kalani who have both faced their own share of pain and heartbreak in their lives. But a tandem jump brings the two characters together and at the same time bring together a mutual attraction to each other. Are they the answer to each other’s pain?

Jennifer Ryder did an amazing job with the writing of this story and managed to make the story flow all the way through, even when it changed characters point of view and switch between past tense and present tense. This was all done excellently, and it made the story even more emotionally, allowing readers to experience the pain that the characters experience. I loved the way that this story was a slow burn and I loved reading the characters got to know each other.

It has been a while since I have had a book hangover like I did after reading this story. This story is a must read for everyone and I highly recommend that you one click this story.

Tandem is the spinoff to Jennifer Ryder's Spark series and stars Kyle Kingston-More and Kalani Hart.

Both characters have their own demons that they are facing from their pasts and it makes this story that much more. Kalani suffers from anxiety and is working through a list of items to help her break free. Kyle has lost greatly in his life and has finally realised that after years of suffering it's time that he tries to settle down and try a relationship again.

When Kyle sees Kalani for the first time, he's mesmerised by her. She's stunning and he can't wait to go on a tandem skydiving jump with her. Kalani is absolutely terrified of skydiving but it's on her list and she's determined to overcome these fears.

The relationship that forms between Kalani and Kyle is truly beautiful. I loved these characters and how far they come throughout the story. This book had me laughing and crying but I just loved it!

Kalani's mum, Milena, is just adorable and had me giggling with her antics.

I definitely recommend reading this book!

Tandem was my first time reading anything written by Jennifer Ryder, and it didn’t disappoint.

Kyle and Kalani’s story is heartbreaking and full of emotion. Full of heat, heart and angst, this story will have you feeling a vast range of emotions.

This pair of characters are complex, scarred and broken by the tragic experiences of their past.

Although this is a slow burn romance, the chemistry this pair share is intense and undeniable. The story flicks between the past and present seamlessly and is told in a dual point of view.

I wouldn’t recommend reading Tandem in public, because if you are like me Ms Ryder’s writing will leave you with tears streaming down your face.

The dialogue this pair share is raw, honest, and intense.

Although this was my first time reading Jennifer’s work it will not be my last.

I absolutely loved reading this book. Going in I wasn’t really quite sure what to expect but it certainly made an impact on me. I was emotionally invested from beginning to end; I could not put this book down.

The story moves between past and present, giving the reader a deep understanding of exactly why the characters are behaving a particular way at that particular time. It cleverly flicks between character point of views, with the development of two separate character stories that then meld into one. Having had a similar personal experience to one of the characters I can honestly say that the emotions the author puts into her characters are very raw and true to life. I was taken on an emotional roller coaster whereby I was feeling all the feels along with both Kyle and Kalani. I also enjoyed the light witted humour that balanced the story out.

The author, Jennifer Ryder, was new to me and she now has a new fan. I will definitely be reading more of her work. Thanks for the amazing read!

Tandem was the first book I had the pleasure of reading by Jennifer Ryder, it sure won’t be the last. It is a slow burn romance of two people who have been through more than anyone should. Kalani and Kyle have heartbreaking pasts that they are both almost scared to overcome until they find each other. It is a duel POV that jumps back to past and present so you get to understand the characters. It is an emotionally captivating story, it is exhilarating, heartbreaking and uplifting to read such a beautiful story. Jennifer did a exceptional job with this book!

It’s been a while between books from Ms Ryder and I must say I did enjoy this read. I love her writing style and these characters were both flawed which is what I think drew them together. Kyle and Kalani, interesting story between past and present which I thought flowed very well. Kyle is an adrenaline junkie and a bit of a gigolo of the skies, he gives his client just what they pay for. He’s worked very hard to make a success of his business Sensational Skydives. His lonely an really has a bit hole in his heart, but you won’t get him admitting that. Kalan tries to avoid everything, she hates wide open spaces, social situations and likes to be in control of her environment. She’s tried to lead normal life but due to situations that happen finds it hard. Will going on a tandem jump solve all her problems??? Or will they cause more???? I’m not going to tell you what happens, you are going to have to read it to find out for yourself….

Tandem was my first book by Ms.Ryder and I wasn't disappointed. Angsty but beautiful.

Kyle and Kalani have both experienced unimaginable losses. They lived somewhat parallel lives, trapped in their grief, until fate placed them in each other's paths. Together, they learn to live again...tandem.

The book had plenty of angst and heartbreak but thankfully, with some relief built in. It's complex and layered and rich with emotions. It also addresses a mental health and anxiety topic that effects a lot of society with great sensitivity. I'll be on the lookout for Ms. Ryder's next book!

Tandem is a new book from an author that gives a solid contemporary romance story with characters that you can relate to.

In this book we have Kyle, he had it all, his life was on track until a tragedy pulled it slowly apart.

We are given pieces of each characters past as we progress through the book, each chapter draws you in, the writing flowed flawlessly, and my heart ached, stuttered and then leapt into the hope of the future with the characters as I read.

Now I didn’t like how Kyle spiralled after his life fell apart, but in reality how people react when their heart is broken isn’t pretty, its brutal and we all deal with stuff differently – so Ms. Ryder did a good job in creating Kyle into a character who was human, flawed and living day to day, shutting off his feelings and distancing himself from his past friends.

Kalani, thought her life was perfect, until one fateful night took everything away and buried her in survivors guilt.  Turning from the bright butterfly she was into a traumatized survivor was too much for some people to deal with (and again Ms Ryder did a great job in drawing the reader into the situations – I felt it all, I really got how Kalani felt and I cheered for her in every step she took to step out of the darkness) I wanted to throttle some of the characters who were close to Kalani.

That’s all I will say on the storyline, this is a second chance romance where two broken hearts find each other, and together they learn to mould what was left of their hearts (because I know neither situations are something anyone could get over completely) into a new and blossoming future together.

I enjoyed delving back into Ms. Ryder’s writing.  This was a good solid 2nd chance romance that will appeal to readers.

My heart was stolen and breath taken! I devoured this tale of love, loss, healing and fun.

Kyle and Kalani, god their names are perfect! We're two of my favorite characters from Jenn. I felt like I learnt so much from them. Their strength and determination, and proof that just having someone in your corner makes everything ok.

This for me wasn't an 'insta-love' story it was a friendship that formed so much more! Their struggles in life come to a head and your heart will be torn out and thrown around the room.

I want to give so much in this review but too much will be too much!

Two stories of grief and anguish, two very different journeys and one absolutely beautiful story of love healing and mending two lives to make one heart.
Many authors in the romance genre will chose to introduce you to a character with real emotional issues and give you a stronger more stable character that through their love and belief rescues them or restores them.

In Tandem, Kyle Kingston-More and Kalani Shaw have both had their lives irreparably changed in dramatic circumstances with starkly different outcomes, although both are shut down emotionally, their coping strategies are at different ends of the spectrum, and this is brilliantly portrayed by the author.

In her attempt to re-enter life following a tragic event that tore her life apart Kalani signs up for a tandem skydive with Kyle unbeknownst that she had signed up for more than an adrenaline charged tick off her Bucket List.

I have to say having taken my own first ever skydive this year, Jennifer nailed the feeling of exhilaration and the absolute adrenaline rush of the experience. My pulse was racing and skin was tingling all over again!

I loved the past and present format of the book, it lent perfectly to revealing their stories as they revealed themselves to one another and us as the reader, and was superbly written and timely in it's delivery. Likewise, the gentle transition to intimacy was respectful to each character and their needs based on their past and present, with their chemistry obvious and with plenty of heat!

I will quite often get emotional and well up when reading a story that tugs at the heart strings, but this one had me totally bawling and needing a break! Such is Jennifer's fabulous descriptive ability, she will tear your heart out, but lovingly piece it back together!

I will need to re-read this story again at some point since I totally binged on it, and such is the impact it had on me! 5 emotionally charged stars!

After losing two people she cared about, Kalani Hart retreated from the world, never venturing out until absolutely necessary. Now she's finally getting back out in the world and determined to cross off items on her list to prove she's ready to start living again. However, crossing off the first item on her list proves harder than she thought, but luckily Kyle Kingston-Moore is determined to help her succeed. Will Kalani and Kyle take a chance on each other to finally heal from their pasts, or will they lose their chance at happy ever after because the past can't be easily forgotten?

This is a very emotional but captivating story, even though I was wasn't sure whether I liked how the story kept going between the past and the present, but I must admit that the further I got into this book the more it made sense for Ms. Ryder to pen the story this way, as it gives readers wonderful knowledge of just how much this hero and heroine have been through in the past to make them do the things they have to cope with the losses they've suffered in their lives. Will Kalani and Kyle be able to help each other heal from their pasts?

As for the dialogue, it was intense due to everything these two have been through in their lives. While Kyle is all about forgetting what happened in his life and moving forward by selling himself the way he does, Kalani has avoided getting on with her life by closing herself off from everyone except her mom. Will she ever be able to get her life back to how it was before she lost two people who were very important to her? Moreover, the heroine is resilient and courageous and I liked that she didn't give up on crossing the items off her list, no matter how long it took her to do them. I also liked how she put her trust in the hero, especially after the betrayal of her ex. While the hero, he's confident, know what he wants, and I liked that he treated Kalani differently to the women he's been with in his past after his marriage dissolved. She's special and he's determined to win her over. I also liked his passion for his job and the decisions he makes because he no longer wants to be the broken man he was after the lose he suffered that earned him a reputation as an adrenaline-seeking, commitment-phobe that will have women flying high in more ways than one.

Overall, Ms. Ryder has delivered a really good read in this story where the chemistry between this couple was heady, convincing and instant from the moment they meet; the romance was delightful and had me liking how these two help each other to heal from their pasts; and the ending had me worried for Kalani and Kyle because of what happens to them. Will everything work out for the best? However, it was the epilogue that wrapped this story up nicely, as these two had me smiling because of how happy they are together and because of what Kyle proposes for while they're away. I would recommend Tandem by Jennifer Ryder, if you enjoy books by authors LJ Shen, Carmen Jenner, Sawyer Bennett and CD Reiss.
