What lengths would you be willing to go to get your share of 37 million dollars worth of inheritance money? Well, turns out pretty much about anything. Even if it means spending time with your estranged family, and letting your dead mother control your family’s actions from beyond the grave.
Of the three sisters, 34 year old Augusta Aldridge is the middle child, the one who gets saddled with restoring the family home. Each of the three siblings gets a task to be fulfilled within a year, which had to be done with the three of them living together in the same house for the duration. Though Tell No Lies does read as a standalone, I think I did miss out on vital aspects of the back story by having jumped straight to reading the second book in the Aldridge Sisters series.
Ian Patterson, falsely accused of the series of gruesome murders that had rocked the headlines of this small town had been a priest before, someone who had been genuinely willing to take on his vow of celibacy because that’s what he had thought he had wanted to be. However, all that changes due to events that had propelled him to travel to Secessionville to seek answers for the questions to which the law enforcement are hard pressed to answer. Being falsely accused of committing the murders, Ian is almost at that point of helplessness when Augusta comes to his rescue.
Augusta knows in her heart that Ian couldn’t have murdered those women. But what if she was wrong? The one point that works in Ian’s favor is the fact that when the last murder had been carried out, they’d been together, lost in a swirl of desire that Augusta craves to taste again. But fear of the repercussions her actions might bring to her family prevents her from coming forward while the real killer continues to hold another victim to toy with.
Tanya Anne Crosby is a new to me author. But right from the start, Tanya’s ease with the words drew me in and I was engrossed in this tale of family secrets, murder and a searing attraction that continued to wreak havoc on my emotions. The only regret that I truly had was that I hadn’t read the first book in the series, Speak No Evil. If you are hearing about this book for the first time, I would definitely recommend that you read book 1 for a more wholesome experience.
As I was reading I couldn’t help but wonder why authors have stopped writing romantic suspense the likes of this one. Some of my favorite reads in the genre have been based in the South, the setting itself lending a charm and a sultry edge to the story that one is hard pressed to find these days. I am definitely going to check out more books by Tanya! Recommended for fans of romantic suspense.
Speak No Evil by Tanya Anne Crosby starts the series by following the Aldridge sisters after their mothers death. This book, Tell No Lies, follow Augusta's story. I read this as a stand alone and was able to figure out what had happened in book one as it recapped it in this book.
Augusta has always felt like an outsider to even her own family. When she is forced to move back to her family home with her sister as part of her mother's will. While she is home, she is closely tied to the area where several missing woman have gone and now when bodies start popping up, she is even closer than she thought as the person arrested is Ian Patterson. Ian and Augusta had a hot and stormy evening right before his arrest.
Ian is looking for a girl from his former parish, she disappeared right after she made confesses to him and then when she made advances towards him, he rejected her. The girl told her family that Ian had molested her. Since then, the girl disappeared and Ian knowing the truth, is searching for her because he never reported the true abuser, her uncle. Ian left the church and knows that he was not in the faith for the religion but to help others.
So, when he is found with tools used in the murders, he is arrested by Augusta's soon to be brother in law. But, all is not what it seems and Auggie knows he is innocent, so she pays for Ian's bail. By doing this, she has further placed a rife between herself and her sisters, especially Caroline who believes that Ian is the killer.
But, when another body is found while Ian was still being held, the police's case starts to unravel. One thing is sure, the killer is somehow tied to the area or entwined with the Aldridge family as too many tales begin to weave and intertwine together.
This is a good mystery/thriller. I really enjoyed the side story of Cody Simmons POV, during his kidnapping and how strong he was. Throughout the story there are quick changes in scenes and in my edition there was no separation to signify it so , as a reader you had to make sure you paid close attention to the change. I would have life to see a line or a separation between those sections for ease of read. Ian's background story was a little much, he went from being a scared straight kid, to a priest, to a supposed bad boy and that seemed a little reaching. Also- Augusta seemed to be a little whiny even when she was trying to be strong. But the plot lines were good and diverse enough that there was no clear M.O. on the killer so you were kept guessing throughout. And When secrets were revealed there as no shortage of additional item in the plot.
*This honest review was done in exchange for an ARC through NetGalley from Kensington Books and Tanya Anne Crosby*
I loved this book. Another first time author where I’m concerned, and again another super find through NetGalley and Kensington. I'm chuffed. The only thing I was bummed about was the fact that I had no idea there was a prequel. I usually check, but for some reason this time I didn’t. Never mind, because I’ve now bought the first one and will read it as soon as possible. Also, I will be added to the author’s ARC list for the third book―and I hope many more!
Tell No Lies is the second in these Oyster Point thrillers and is a Southern tale set in Charleston, which I adored, and revolves around the Aldridge family. I can’t speak―as yet―for the first book Speak No Evil, so don’t have a clue what took place, but from Tell No Lies it's quite evident that quite a bit happened. Even so, this one read fully and comprehensively, at no time making me feel like something was missing. However, because I’m pedantic this way, I will now make my full acquaintance with the Aldridge family by going backwards. I look forward to it, regardless.
Tell No Lies follows Augusta, one of three sisters; the eldest being, Caroline and the youngest, Savannah, who have been brought together once again following their mother’s death. Their relationship as a whole has never really been the best, so to be placed under the same roof is nothing short of strenuous. Each has been given a task they need to accomplish within a certain time period in order to inherit. Augusta is in charge of renovations, Caroline has taken over the newspaper, and Savannah is writing a book whilst inventorying the house. Sadie, the housekeeper, and her son, Josh, are a big and integral part of this family. A family whose secrets have stayed buried for many years.
I have to say that this book had me right from the beginning. It was eerie, haunting and scary to say the least.
Cody’s friend tells him a tale about seeing a dead body and blood at a burnt down church in the middle of nowhere, and he wants Cody to see it. Not really wanting to explore this bit of gruesome, he eventually gives in. Persistence and not wanting to be chicken always plays a big part where kids are concerned. Upon closer inspection, they see a shadow and frightened out of their minds, make a run for it. Cody isn’t lucky, stumbles, falls into a hole and is terrified of the consequences. That his friend didn’t have the decency to wait for him, or backtrack to help, did not add to his cause. Someone looms over him, and Cody disappears.
Being home is the last place Augusta wants to be; she can’t stand it. One good thing seems to be the man she's met. Ian Patterson is a former priest as a consequence of what happens in this book―who for some reason has her full attention. Inexplicably, after a sizzling night of passion, Ian’s arrested the next day. He's not only being blamed for the disappearance of a young lady, but the gruesome murders of others. It goes without saying that should a mere child point finger in regards to molestation after her attentions aren't reciprocated, it’s a given his the perp. Sadly, Ian knows who really molested her, but hasn’t been able to voice the truth, a truth her own mother knew. Because Ian is pursuing her disappearance, this doesn’t bode well for his denials. However, Augusta knows deep down that it’s just not possible, and for some reason trusts Ian even though she hasn’t known him that long. Some things just are. When a body is found, Jack, who is a cop and Caroline’s fiancé, has no option but to release him, because Ian couldn't have done it. He's been locked up. Augusta, going against what she knows will cause a further divide between herself and her sisters, bails him out. Caroline is adamant Ian is the killer, and is the one who spreads the word far and wide. She later finds out that things aren't quite as they seem.
To touch briefly on Sadie, my heart broke for her, and although I understood some of the anger from Augusta’s point of view, I also managed to take in the why of it all. The only part that had me gasping where Sadie is concerned was regarding something that must have taken place in the first book, which affected the entire Aldridge family. As a mother, I know I would do anything for my son, but there is a line that should never be crossed. I say this knowing full well that I have never been in her situation, and hope I never, ever am.
What we have here is pure awesomeness. Tell No Lies is dark, chilling and thrilling, with a dash of scandal. There are various angles and relationships at play here, not forgetting the untold secrets, which do come to the fore. I had an inkling as to who the killer could be, then changed my mind, only to find out that I was correct. This only much, much later on in the story, though. Points of view change at exactly the right time throughout the story, which added to my pounding heart; the killers, Cody’s, Augusta, Ian’s and more. It’s a keep-you-on-your-toes kind of read with a continuous plot twist. Nail-biting. One part in the story I loved was the interaction between Cody and the snake. The mind assurances Cody had going on with himself, and the connection of what I fully believed was taking place between these two gave me goosies.
What can I say I haven’t already said? It was amazing! I love Ms. Crosby's writing style; it flows with as much ease as it does in pulling you in. Superb. Another 2014 favourite read!
Very exciting mystery and yes, I was right about the killer. Only read this second book cause the first one left me with suspicions. Lots of answered questions revealed and ended well.
This is a good story because there are many different story lines going on. First is murder and after another body turns up the local police arrest Ian Patterson. Everyone in town believes he is guilty except for Augusta Aldridge. She does come forward with any information but does bail him out. She is one of three sisters who have been made to come home because of the will of her mothers. They each have a year to do a task and then they would inherit the money, over 300 million dollars. Her task is to fix the family home that she ran away from. After she bails out Ian most people turn on her except for her sisters and then that leads to a whole other set of problems for the police and for Augusta who decides to investigate what is going in when they put Ian back in jail once again. Like I said there are many story lines in this book but by the time you get to the end there are so many mysteries that get solved that even I was surprised by the ending and who the killer actually was and how many people had been killed for so long and who had helped. This was a fantastic who done it and I was fascinated by the way she was able to make the story work the way it did. Very believable. A great read. I got this book from net galley.
The 2nd mystery in the series focuses more on Augusta Aldridge. The killer has not yet been totally identified at the end of book 1. The police thinks they found the right guy, but Augsuta has good reasons to believe they are wrong. But is she completely right? The question is essential to her own survival and to the people of the area. Augusta will need to take on herself to face her demons and try to look at truth in the face. Seduction and danger mix here in very suspensful moments. Whom can you trust? Can a charming face or elegant clothes be signs of innocence?
Tell No Lies is the first contemporary book that I have read by Tanya Anne Crosby. When I see this author’s name, I usually think Highlanders or Medieval romances. However, she can write one scary Southern mystery too. From the beginning when little Cody was imaging copperhead snakes until the end when he was in the hospital, she had my complete attention. This series concerns the lives of three sisters, Caroline, Augusta, and Savannah Aldridge. This book is about Augusta and her love interest, Ian. Included is also a serial killer who is not easily caught. This book is plenty intense; it should come with a warning - Don’t Read After Dark If Alone. If you are a fan of Stacy Green’s Delta Crossroads Series, I can recommend this Southern murder mystery whole heartily to you. It will become a new favorite for you just like it has for me. Copy provided by NetGalley for an honest review.
I loved this book and read it straight through. Could not put it down. I have read both books that have been released in this series and loved both of them. I highly recommend this book to mystery/romantic suspense readers.
First, I must note that this is a second book, but I think it could stand well on it's own. Crosby wrote Speak No Evil, first, and you can read my review on that here. As a recap, I rated that book a 3/5 because it built up to a terrible ending in which you were left wondering if they even caught the right guy.
Luckily, Tell No Lies cleared up my ending woes. It also can be read as a standalone book, because Crosby was smart to craft this novel from another sister's point of view. The first chunk of this book is essentially a recap of the first novel, Speak No Evil, but it is told from a different sister's point of view so it was a refreshing twist on the story I already knew.
This one, I would say, is more shocking, with larger twists, and a much more satisfying ending. I had already built rapport with the characters as of a couple of days ago when I read Speak No Evil, so the character development just added on to what I already knew, which was nice. It added layers of complexity, and I grew to know a sister that was largely overlooked in the first book.
Now, the true killer didn't come as exactly a surprise to me, but I definitely like how it developed, and I loved how many juicy secrets crept out during this book! It was well written, fast-paced, and more enjoyable than the first. Tell No Lies also started out with a raunchy little scene, in which I was like, oookaaay Tanya, I see you girl!
I did have just one major problem with it, which is why I rated it down a star. The main love relationship really annoyed me. Augusta and Ian basically fell in love at first sight in the last book, which by the sound of it, anyone would fall in love with Ian at first sight. Anyway, she pays 150,000 to get him out of jail after maybe two actual conversations with the guy. Then, Ian falls in love with her, which I guess I would too if someone paid my 150k bail money. Anyway, the whole relationship was really rushed and honestly bordered on the line of obnoxious. I believe in infatuation, but these two really dove head first. I think Crosby was trying to make it seem like an explanation of character with Augusta, but come on.
The other problem I had is that the killers MO was never truly explained. I can't dive into analyzing this one too much because it would give some things away, but I just hated that loose end that didn't really seem tied up in Tell No Lies. There is one more book, Leave No Trace, which I may just have to read soon.
I just loved this final book in “The Aldridge Sisters” series! I read books 1& 2, and “Leave No Trace”. TNL pulled all the characters from the other two books together, and redefined the plotlines. The characters were realistic and believable; the sisters were likeable, and the reader is able to laugh, cry, and love with them. Ms. Crosby’s writing style has a lyrical quality as she describes in detail the sounds, sights, and smells of the lowcountry of South Carolina. This novel was part romantic suspense, part mystery, part psychological drama. For some reason, I was able to identify the murderer when I was about 25% through the novel. The author didn’t give any clues away until the very end, but I had a “feeling” it was this particular individual. I recommend reading all three of these books. They’re well worth the time and money. I’m reading “The Girl Who Stayed” next.
Unfortunately this book only gets one star from me because the author copied and pasted whole paragraphs into this book from See No Evil, the previous book in the series. Furthermore the author has characters having redundant musings. The author never ties up the several missing persons cases, as they get tossed out without a thought or a trace of conclusion. The red herrings used as misdirection are never explained or resolved. This is one book that left a lot of strings dangling and too many unnecessary plot points that never went anywhere. WHERE ARE AMANDA AND JENNIFER? Who knows? I surely don’t, as I am left to assume they are in the swamp. I am one frustrated reader as this title was not worth the money for either the book or the audiobook.
Good mystery. Slightly more gruesome than the Speak No Evil first book for sure. As in, the killer recounts his feelings and thoughts when picking his victims or murdering them, so beware. This book focused on Augusta and Ian more where the first book focused on Caroline and Jack. All the same characters were involved though - Sadie, Savannah, Daniel, Josh, Florence (posthumously), etc. I am recommending even though there were a couple things that irritated me about some of the characters actions. But this might be typical in dark thriller like this; we wouldn't do some of those things in real life in the same situation...I don't think ☺️.
An absolute page turning, spine tingling suspense at its best. I am so very pleased that I have discovered the author to this series, Tanya Anne Crosby. The Aldridge sister's are back in their family home for the reading of their mother's will, none too happy to be there. The three sisters will receive a share in a 27 million dollar inheritance if they complete their late mother's instructions and stay in the family home for 12 months. Lies, deceipt, murder and missing people. Highly recommend.
Fantastic book 3 of the series! Plenty of southern style with old-school superstition . Well done!
Augusta knows in her heart that Ian is innocent. Having been arrested the killer and kidnapper, no one could make the accusations stick. Especially when Augusta was his solid alibi. The killer is still on the loose. Augusta and her sisters Caroline and Savanah were desperate to find out who it is. So was the CPD Detective and Caroline’s fiancé Jack. They could not believe the way the investigation was turning out. When you think you know people well; all your life. You don’t.
So far I have enjoyed all the Tanya Anne Crosby books I have read. Full of suspense with just enough sex to make it interesting. The “bad guy” is really hard to figure out. I can usually guess who it is a lot sooner than I can in her books. All the characters come to life. She is a masterful storyteller. I usually pick out the free books, but hers are definitely worth buying.
Very well written last book about the Aldridge sisters. Fast paced, lots of twists and turns - a true romantic thriller with sub-stories. I did have a few unanswered questions at the end re the killer - maybe I need to read the book again? I was turning the pages so fast at the end, maybe I missed something. Great book to keep you on the edge if your seat!
What's done in the dark always come to light. Sometimes the mind may have us to believe what the heart feels and eyes really don't see.
Crosby will keep you enthusiastic within Aldridge Sisters. Must read "Speak No Evil" to now what is going on "Tell No Lie" in order to understand Flo the matriarch of the family short story "Leave No Trace" will truly get you to understand what and who we're seeking in both books.
Augusta believed that Ian Patterson was innocent and does all she can to prove it. Going against her sisters, she sticks to her guns. Secrets are revealed by Sadie and people she trusted. Bodies are discovered and she gets a new start she didn't see coming. Trauma will follow them, forgiveness won't come easy, and the house may not hold them after it is renovated.
I really like these characters. I wonder if I were one of the 3 sisters if I could forgive Sadie...There has to be a third book so we can see what's up with Savannah and her "gift" no one knows about.
Cody befriending the cottonmouth (not the most memorable but a good moment)

Loved this second in series even more than the first: the steamy love of Augusta and Ian, and the solving of the the mysteries past and present—BRILLIANT plot. Crosby writes so well about family entanglements.
Predictable, I only read this book to confirm who I thought was the killer. The ending was so cheesy. It's as if the author just got tired of writing and wanted to be done. Reads like a bad made-for-TV script.
Very powerful, intense modern day thriller set in Charleston, SC. and filled with the rich history of the Gullah and the coastal areas of South Carolina, & Georgia. Vivid , colorful details fill this deeply impassioned mystery with red hot romance and mystery.
I read book 1 and wasn't too happy with the ending because I knew they had arrested the wrong person as the serial killer . This book was more organized with several twist and turns to reveal the real killer .
Really enjoyed reading this great book. You kept me intrigued all the way through to the end. Such a sad and interesting book. Highly recommend reading. Looking forward to reading the next in this series.
Although I enjoyed the bok,I had guessed the bad one in the first book. And there isn't a book dedicated to the third sister, why have her in the series at all. Ok scratch that I found the third sisters book, cold dead sleep, however not in ebook version so back to square one
Apparently, I read the other two in this series a while ago? Because I did read them. I just don’t remember them. And, reading this one, finally, didn’t trigger anything familiar. So, I guess this book could be considered a standalone. I did not feel like I was missing anything.
