The world of Nirmal Verma is mesmerizing, unique and so personal that every word will take you to the utmost depth of yourself and your surroundings. If the work of art is to push the boundaries of yourself to the regions that it had never explored before- then Nirmal Verma has accomplished this tough task with his stories.

I picked up this book for Popsugar2023 reading challenge prompt: Smallest book (by number of pages) in your TBR.

I think I picked up this book in one of those by the kilos haul and because I feel guilty for not reading enough books in Hindi.

A collection of 4 short stories by Nirmal Verma - Beech Bahas mein is mere 127 pages long but each story has the depth which transcends you near the character - in a park, railway coach, in a care home/hospital or inside an Indian house in a European settlement and you can hear them speak as you read along. I almost felt that I was seeing a theatre show as I read them and the characters are performing for me.

All the three stories except the one which lent it's name to the book - gave me Jhumpa Lahiri vibes - of an immigrant character in an unknown country.

The stories which were first published in 1973 -are modern and seems still relevant - a mirror of the societal conditions or the relationships -even five decades hence.

छुट्टियों के बाद - pov of an immigrant as he meets two young girls on a train - one of them who at the start of the journey is dejected and sad to leave the boyfriend she met in Paris; only to surprise the narrator with reality of life as she reaches her destination

वीकेंड - story of the inner turmoil of a girl who is in love with a married man with a child

दो घर - pov of a young immigrant who meets a fellow Indian and his non Indian wife and their children in a rural foreign community, who leads a dual life back home.

बीच बहस में - story of a man waiting in a care home or hospital as his father lies dying
