When You Can't Just Get Over It: Biblical Insights for the Real World

Rate this book
The real world isn’t as idealistic as we expect. Although we would love to coast through life with little difficulty and minimal challenges, we often find ourselves facing barriers greater than our inner resources to scale.
Injustice, insecurity, discouragement, bitterness, depression, severed relationships, rejection, confusion—they come at us from without and within. And no matter how many times we tell ourselves, “Just snap out of it” or our friends ask, “Why can’t you just get over it?” real world problems don’t evaporate.
In the pages of Scripture, however, we discover that we are not alone. Throughout God’s Word, we encounter men and women who faced—and overcame—these very challenges. In this book, Pastor R.B. Ouellette leads readers through the lives of ten Bible characters and draws insights that will help you overcome the same difficulties they faced. Better yet, you’ll learn not how to “just get over it,” but how to clear the hurdle and be better on the other side because you encountered it.

Very good, Biblical instructions for dealing with issues that happen to everyone in life. I was very blessed in the last chapter by a story I had never heard before of David and Svea Flood and their daughter Aggie!! Look it up if you don’t read this book!

I started this about 8 months ago or so, made it about halfway through, and gave up on finishing it. It didn't feel cohesive, and sometimes there seemed to be too much of a focus on how the reader might be feeling in the situation instead of how to overcome negative feelings. I think it would have been more helpful if the layout had been approached differently, where the keys to conquering the struggles in each chapter were laid out clearly somewhere instead of being interspersed in the paragraphs/sections. That being said, I decided to pick this one back up and try to finish, and there are some good statements and tips that make me glad I didn't totally give up on this book.

Bottom Line: If you're looking for more of a Bible study on these topics where you'll need to focus in and dig a little to find what you're looking for, this is a good option. If you're looking for straightforward, bite-sized, bulleted lists of Biblical tips, keys, and reminders, this isn't what you want.

This is a wonderful book that will touch your life in so many ways. I found this book in a Goodwill store while looking for inexpensive cookbooks. I had never heard of the author, pastor R.B. Ouellette, but the title intrigued me. I was experiencing emotions I couldn’t “just get over”, so I bought the book and took it home. After letting it sit on the shelf for several weeks, I finally got around to start reading . it has helped me so much and provided insights I desperately needed. I have highlighted many passages so I can quickly go back to important points. This book will benefit everyone as all our lives experience ups and downs. God never abandons us . He is ever present as you’ll see illustrated here.
