S has gotten really, REALLY into Geronimo Stilton books this school year. I think this is the fifth or sixth one he has read (at least). This morning he burst into my bedroom raving about how he had finished this book while reading at bedtime last night and how much he liked it, so I said, "Tell me what you like about it," and he said "Well, they go to Milan and someone dresses up as a janitor and steals a secret recipe for a special kind of Christmas cake and...well, you'll have to read the rest to find out what happens!" I couldn't resist his enthusiastic recommendation, so I read his book this afternoon.
I can definitely see why this is appealing to 2nd graders. The illustrations are vibrant and detailed and the text has all sorts of colorful, highlighted words. This particular Geronimo Stilton book had historical facts scattered throughout the book and pages where the action would pause so a tourist attraction in Milan could be described in more detail (S informed me that the facts aren't included in every Stilton book, but I went to his room and looked through a few other books in the series and it seems that most of them do involve non-fiction blurbs in some fashion).
S really enjoys the mystery aspect of some of these books as well. This one's "mystery" seemed quite obvious to me, but it clearly kept him happily intrigued. I'm just happy he's so enthusiastic about these books, and clearly learning some things as well. Lucky for him there seem to be roughly a million Geronimo books, so he can stay busy with these for a while.
