"Fast paced, suspenseful and humorous—this one leaves me wanting MORE!" — Amazon Reader KD
Sarah Anderson loves working at the supernatural night court of Washington DC. She has a front-row seat for the trial of the century, where her testimony might put a criminal vampire mastermind behind bars forever.
By day, though, her enticing supernatural mentor warns that her newly awakened powers might kill her, or maybe drive her mad. (Exhibit Visions of an ancient Egyptian goddess no one else can see.) By night, she can’t decide if she wants to kiss her vampire boss or stake him.
When an ancient evil invades the courthouse, Sarah’s arcane training goes into overdrive. Will she embrace the magic within her or die trying?

Mindy Klasky learned to read when her parents shoved a book in her hands and told her that she could travel anywhere in the world through stories. She never forgot that advice.
Mindy's travels took her through multiple careers, including copyright lawyer and law librarian. Mindy now writes full time. Her books fall in a number of genres -- including romantic comedies, paranormal romance, and traditional fantasy.
In her spare time, Mindy knits, quilts, and tries to tame the endless to-be-read shelf in her home library. Her husband and two cats do their best to fill the left-over minutes in her days.
Ok, so I'm married to the author, just to get that out of the way. This was exactly the book I needed to read right now. I love the voice and attitude of Sarah, our main character, and everyone around her is fleshed out enough (pun somewhat intended) that things feel real even when they are decidedly unreal. I found myself engrossed in both the plot and the character arcs which always makes for a good read. LAW AND MURDER is a fun and rewarding read.
Law and Murder, the second installment of the Fright Court series takes us straight to the court room with Sarah Anderson, night clerk and sphinx, as she sits and waits for the trial of the Maurice Richardson, evil vampire, to start. Soon after the defendant takes his seat, there is a motion to have Sarah vacated from the court room, and also another motion to not permit her to testify as she is not a formally registered sphinx, and then the story really takes off. We follow Sarah as she struggles to find her place, train in all things sphinx, try to sort out her feelings for both James the vampire and Chris her mentor, and also try to solve the mysterious happenings going on in the courts and around D.C. I loved absolutely everything about this book and did not want it to end. The final chapters in this book especially were full of twists and were very emotionally charged. This story is definitely one to read over and over again. Definitely a frightfully good read.

This is book two in a series, but this is really where things kick off. Sarah works as a Court Clerk for the Night Court (supernatural court) but has discovered she is something else - a sphinx. Descended from an Egyptian goddess, her role is to protect vampires. She's also learnt that the the sound reporter she likes, chris, is quite high up in the food chain and not just a mild mannered reporter. Thing is, she also likes boss and vampire James Morton. On top of this, they await the trial of murderous Richardson who kidnapped her in book one. There's lots going on here, but I really loved the mythology behind the sphinx origins, including a look inside their den, a version of Hogwarts for descendants of Sekhmet, the burgeoning feelings Sarah has towards the two men in her life, her deeper need to know who her awol father was, plus the relationship issues with her and her best friend Allison. This is terrific second book, which is difficult with a new series, the worldbuilding is amazingly constructed and Sarah is a believable heroine with flaws but determined and passionate. Add in top some nice one liners plus fun scenes amidst chaos and a thrilling climax, and you have a superb book.
Impressed?...well, yes I am - and not just by a vampire!
Law and Murder is the second installment in this series and it does not disappoint. I won't recap the story, because I believe you should enjoy every morsel of it's literary goodness. But, I will give you a teaser with one of my favorite sentences, "My blood sang in my ears, crooning ancient epics of warriors and wise men, of priestesses leading armies off to battle."
Mindy Klasky brings to life the world of vampires and sphinxes with laughter, suspense, and love. The character development both within and across books has depth and imagination, drawing the reader in and generating true curiosity regarding the outcome of the conflict. She left me wanting more - more of the characters, more conflict, more resolution in ways that only Sarah Anderson can resolve problems. I am looking forward to the next book in the series!
Note* I reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
Full disclosure: I received the e-book for free in exchange for an honest review. First, I definitely recommend reading Fright Court (the first in the series) before this one. This book picks up a short time after the events of the first book and you need to be familiar with the events of that book to understand a lot that is going on in this one. Second, if you read and enjoyed the first one, you will really enjoy this one. A lot of action, getting more in depth into the mythology and world surrounding the Imperials and the Eastern Empire, and a touch of romance. While it still has it's lighthearted moments, this one is definitely darker and more serious in both its events and relationships. It has some closure to this story, but still leaves a lot open in the bigger story arc for the next installment. I enjoyed it and would like to read more in this series!
Some serious research has gone into this writing. I have always had a fascination with the other world. One of my favourite subjects would be Ancient Egypt. That era is so clouded in superstition and conjecture. But one thing remains true... there are records. The hyroglyphics exist. We can only hope, that the translations are correct. Ancient Egypt, the pharaoh's, the pyramids and their construction...? All in all, quite a complicated mystery. So. This leaves a lot of room for a fictional tale such as this... The Washington Vampire series. Fabulous.
Another harrowing paranormal adventure with a hint of romance set in a hidden world of DC. Things have to look their most bleak before any redemption. Sara is in danger of losing her best friend due to demands on her time and the need for secrecy. She has to juggle sleep, work, and trying to pass impossible certification tests for a hostile group. There's certainly a lot of action. Typos: several quotes ended incorrectly with the punctuation outside of them. "He says your fine" is also incorrect.
Good light paranormal romance. My main gripe is occasional discrepancies. In the last book a thumb drive containing the location of several imperial sanctums was stolen. In this one vampires never reveal their sanctums ever. Including, apparently, the vampire whose sanctum was burned down in the last book because its location was store on an encrypted thumb drive with three others. Other tgan that I enjoyed the book.
This is the second in the series. Klasky is builds a believable world where vampires, sphinxes and other creatures exist along side regular reality. I'm curious how the main character's relationship with her human best friend will grow and change as the main character gets more immersed in the vampire/Sphinx world.
I read a lot of paranormal mysteries and \ or romance. This was a different take. It was quite interesting and entertaining. I read the first book in the series the Mayhem, Murder, and Mystery boxset. So I was intrigued enough to read the rest of the series. Very enjoyable .
3.5. This book has left me with a lot of lose ends. It looks like there will no future book forthcoming. That’s disappointing. I have questions and need resolutions.
The best friend was entirely selfish at the end and that was very disappointing. Also, who exactly is her father and what does that mean?
There's not a lot of great light paranormal series out there. Usually, they're either really racy or too formulaic. This series features paranormals that are different from anything I've ever read and the story line just sucked you in. Check it out!
Written by Mindy Klasky, Law and Murder is the sequel to Fright Court and picks back up with Sarah.
Honestly, I was disappointing in this novel and where it went. The idea of being a sphinx is interesting, but just... I didn't like what they did with the book.
I loved it, this was one of those books that arouse my curiosity and make me look the mythology for more information ... in search of the third book :)
Great continuation of this series. Can't wait to read the next book. I found this book hard to put down. Wanted to keep reading and find out what happens next. Great page turner.
“Love and Murder” is the second book in the “Fright Court” series but it was my first foray into the world of vampires, sphinxes and other supernaturals that Mindy Klasky has created. From the blurb, I anticipated a witty, fun read...and it delivered that hands down. But what I did not anticipate was that it would have thoughtful moments, darker moments and intense moments that elevated the book from being a lighthearted read to a clever, surprising suspenseful story with an interesting romance!
Sarah Anderson, the night court clerk for Washington D.C., deals with both “normal” humans and the supernatural citizens who file cases for the court. It’s a job she loves, but Sarah has a lot on her mind. She is still grasping with the discovery that she is a sphinx - a supernatural who “protects” vampires. She is also torn between the feelings she has for her boss, vampire Chief of Court security James Morton, and the pull of attraction for her sphinx mentor, Chris Gardner. Sarah is hiding her true self from her very best friend, Allison Ward - a very human best friend who is unaware of the supernaturals walking the streets. Toss in the “trial of the century” of the most dangerous villain to threaten the Eastern Empire, Maurice Richardson, who Sarah has to testify against…...well, she has her hands, and mind, full! In a flash, the trial goes awry, Sarah has to lie low and danger is lurking everywhere!
The story is told in the first person from Sarah’s point of view; I do not normally read books that only come at you, the reader, from that perspective. But this book is extremely well-written and Ms. Klasky is able to develop and convey the emotions of all the characters through Sarah. The humor and witty banter is present, but the added drama gave the story some depth and I really felt invested in Sarah, James, Chris and Allison. I cannot wait for the next book (please hurry) - although this book is not totally a cliffhanger, there is clearly some questions remaining. How will Sarah’s life as a sphinx play out now? I for one will stay turned!
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I really enjoyed reading this vampire/sphinx story - and I loved the cupcake tarot game! I wish I had read Fright Court first though.
what an interesting story. This books storyline was something new for me. The lead character, Sarah, is a court clerk in a supernatural court. And she happens to be a sphinx! There's nothing wrong with that but she has only known what she is for a very short time. And has missed a lot of her training. Her main job is to protect a vampire (James),who is the head of security for the court.and to keep the peace with all of the supernaturals. See, this is different, lol There is also another character named Chris, who is Sarah's mentor and teacher. I really like how the 3 characters interact with each other, even though James and Chris are at odds with each other about their feelings for Sarah. As the story goes on, Sarah is gaining more wisdom and is put to the test to protect James. Like I said ,I really liked this story and the way it was written. There are some unusual characters that come in towards the later part of the book that really turns this book into an adventure! I didn't know this was a book #2 in the series but I was able to understand everything without reading the first book. I will however read the first one too, because I liked this one so much. Now I want to state that I voluntarily left this review for a free copy and my review is an honest one. great job Mindy !
First of all, I was given this ARC of "Law and Murder" in exchange for an unbiased review. I've never read anything by Mindy Klasky before, so it felt odd to be jumping into Book Two of a series because that's normally not my style! But I was very impressed with Ms. Klasky's writing style. The characters are great, and Sarah's night life sounds much more exciting than mine! I also love the mentions of Athena and Hera as Greek and Roman mythology has been a long-time interest of mine.
All in all, I was very pleased with the book. I think I may go find Book One just to see how it all began!!
Fright Court is back! Court Clerk Sarah Jane Anderson for the District of Columbia Night Court is trying to get information on the current trial of the criminal mastermind, Maurice Richardson...a vampire who recently tried to kill her and was on trial for that and other crimes. But not only was she excluded from the courtroom until her testimony was required, but her vampire boss, James Morton, has just presented her with a motion to exclude her testimony on the grounds that she is not a registered sphinx. If this motion is granted, the criminal might actually be set free! Her only solution is to undergo training with Chris Gardner in the next two weeks to learn about her heritage and be acknowledged by the sphinx community. But the training doesn't go as smoothly as planned, because Sarah is a very unique sphinx and opposing forces are at work. I really enjoyed this latest adventure of Sarah, full of action, and more than enough angst as Sarah also tries to come to terms with her feelings towards both James and Chris. I would suggest reading "Fright Court" first before this story, so the background and characters have more meaning. Can't wait for the next book in this series! Disclosure: I am voluntarily reviewing an advance reading copy of this book.
*minor spoilers * I am going to be honest I don’t feel the same connection to the protagonist Sarah Anderson of the Fright Court series as I do with Jane Madison from Ms Klasky’s series of the same name. I think that may be why I found Law and Murder a little harder to get into as opposed to a pacing issue.
None the less I did enjoy the book especially as the central mystery of who wanted to sacrifice a judge to the Egyptian Goddess Sekhmet unfolded. I found myself riveted and engrossed and couldn’t wait to find out if Sarah would beat the clock and save the judge’s life.
This aspect appealed to me on the level as one of Dan Brown’s Robert Langdon book does, but I wouldn’t say it was derivative because Law and Murder has its own distinct atmosphere, universe and characters. It is enjoyable when books are both entertaining and educational. Prior to this book I didn’t know anything about the Lion-Headed Egyptian Goddess, I found myself going online to find out more. In my opinion that is a mark of a good author who engages their reader because it means they have successfully made connection on some level.
After reading this chapter of Sarah’s story, I feel like I have gotten to know her better and am eagerly anticipating get next adventure.
