About the author

Simon Leys is the pen-name of Pierre Ryckmans, who was born in Belgium and settled in Australia in 1970. He taught Chinese literature at the Australian National University and was Professor of Chinese Studies at the University of Sydney from 1987 to 1993. He died in Sydney in 2014.

Writing in three languages - French, Chinese and English - he played an important political role in revealing the true nature of the Cultural Revolution. His many prizes include the Prix Renaudot, Prix mondial Cino Del Duca and the Christina Stead Prize.

Curiously and amusingly this manages to tell the same story as Batavia's Graveyard but in 59 pages rather than 350 odd, even down to sharing some of the same details - such as the recovery of the barrel of vinegar.

But this volume consists of two essays. One a condensed account, just the facts, ma'am of the wreck of the Batavia a Dutch Eastindiaman off the coast of Western Australia in the first half of the seventeenth century. Some of the crew departed in an open boat for Java to get assistance while the rest settled down to a reign of terror. Simon Leys writes that he had been planning to write a book, had gathered materials, thought it would make for a great story and then Batavia's Graveyard was published first, all Leys wants to do is point his finger towards that book, I don't think that either are definitive, but both go as far as their author wanted, somebody in some other way I imagine will revisit the story again.

Couple with that is an essay called Prosper about a short stint on a Breton Tuna fishing sail boat, one of the last vessels of its kind. On board the chief things is the red wine, a miserly one litre of red per man per day. There is a boy on board to cook. The Skipper is a former navy man and so when the boy brings up the daily soup at midday, he says 'Have I given the order for the soup to be brought up? Go back below' and once the boy is back down below, he sends for the soup. This happens everyday. One sailor speaks only Breton, but sings only in French. The sailors have to work hard on managing the sails, after a particularly laborious task, the captain would call for extra wine, red, and white, for those who prefer it. The Tuna are caught on a line which calls for vigilance at all times. If the boat goes too fast or too slow or the bait is insufficiently inviting, or one of a dozen other reasons the Tuna respectfully decline to bite. Once they do, one Tuna is hung from the main mast and chunks are sliced off it every day for dinner as a supplement to sausage and cheese. On the one hand the sailors are a washed out bunch of boozers who can't cope with the mechanical pace of work required on a modern boat, on the other the requirements on them are genuinely tough, then again the drink is the important thing, one of the sailors uses the voyages to control his alcoholism however in a catch 22 Doctors find him too much of a drunk to be allowed to sail, but if he wasn't packed off on board on a restricted level of drinking he'd drink himself to death, the captain resolves the problem by taking him on board as a passenger. Equally they have to cast off and set sail before the cafes open, otherwise the crew will sit at table and drink until they can't sit in a chair any more.

Eventually this watery Eden comes to an end as the oldest member of the crew develops a nose bleed which despite being dosed with condensed milk will not stop, and the captain takes them back to port.

In short this is a story of the good old days, one the Skipper’s constant complaints is about the requirement to have modern lifeboats – capable of carrying all the crew and ready at all times for emergency – as opposed to the boat he actually has which is regarded as a convenient storage container. Scientists who put astronauts on the Moon are the other principal cause of unhappiness as they are, obviously, the cause of bad weather.

An odd coupling, taken together , perhaps a warning against going to sea.

פרשת בטאוויה, הוא סיפור הטירוף והרוע האנושי.

בשנות ה 30 של המאה ה 17 הפליגה ספינת הדגל של חברת הודו המזרחית ההולנדית לג'אווה. המצב על הספינה היה גם כך מתוח ולמרות גודלה היא אוכלסה בכ 300 נפשות.

בשל טעות בשיקול הדעת הספינה עולה על השירטון ליד ארכיפלג האלמוגים שליד אוסטרליה. רב החובל ונציג חברת הספנות מפליגים ב 2 סירות ההצלה להזעיק עזרה מהאי ג'אווה ורוקח מטורף בשם קורנליוס מצליח בדרכים עקלקלות להשתלט על יתר הניצולים בעזרת קבוצת חמושים.

הוא מיד מתחיל במעשי ההרג והטבח ומגלה את חלקם לאיים סמוכים מתוך מטרה להביא למותם. מעשי הזוועה נכשלים בזכות מלח/חייל אנונימי שמצליח לארגן חלק מהניצולים ומשתלט על קורנליוס.

כשמשלחת ההצלה חוזרת רק 80 מהניצולים מהטביעה ניצלו מהטבח האכזרי.

סיפור כתוב היטב ונקרא תוך שעה. התיאור מרתק והסופר עומד גם על הפסיכולוגיה שמאחורי האנשים והמתחים שהובילו לתוצאה המזוויעה. בסוף הספר הוא מתאר את ביקורו בפלג ואת המפגש שלו עם אחד הדייגים שתחת ביתו נמצאו שרידי גופות של הנרצחים.

אחד הספרים הטובים בסידרת פטיט שחלק מהספרים בה התגלו לי כמאכזבים.

סיפורם המזעזע והאמיתי (!) של ניצולי ספינת בטאוויה שטבעה ליד אוסטרליה. 200 ניצולים מצליחים להגיע לאיים קטנים בקרבת מקום, רק כדי לגלות שהזוועה עוד רק התחילה.
רוקח לשעבר, נמלט מהחוק, מנצל את היעדרותם של הדרגות הגבוהות של הספינה ששטו להזעיק עזרה, על מנת להפוך למנהיג אכזרי, המשליט משטר אימים.
הוא וקומץ חסידים עליהם השפיע, טובחים ללא הכרה בגברים, נשים, ילדים ותינוקות, ביניהם גם מתומכיו שנשבעו לו אמונים.
באי סמוך, קמה ועולה קבוצת מורדים בהנהגתו של חיל פשוט, הגון ואמיץ.
כשהעזרה מגיעה נותרים 80 ניצולים מתוך ה-200 שניצלו מהספינה הטובעת.

Fantástico resumen de un naufragio aterrador. La pena es que Leys no haya escrito el libro detallado que se proponía. Habrá que ir a por el de Mike Dash, que el propio autor recomienda.

Si en el anterior libro que leí todo era espíritu positivo en este nos encontramos la hez de la humanidad. Si no fuera por alguna heroica excepción llegaríamos a la conclusión de que más vale que nos extingamos.
El pero de este libro, y es un pero muy grande, es que no es que sea breve, es que es lacónico, conciso, casi inexistente. Es el esbozo de lo que debería haber sido un libro mucho más largo pero que se queda en una enumeración de acontecimientos de los que poca chica se puede sacar. Sólo válido para abrir el apetito y que nos lleve a otros textos más interesantes.

Simon Leys fut un des plus grands essayistes politiques du 20e siècle et ses écrits sont d'une probité intellectuelle sans faille. Dans le premier récit, il raconte comment il n'a pas réussi à écrire l'essai historique sur le naufrage du Batavia malgré ses années de recherche sur le sujet et nous livre juste un résumé succinct de cet incroyable événement dont on ressort avec qu'une seule envie, celle de lire l'ouvrage de référence sur le Batavia écrit par Mike Dash. Le second récit est celui du voyage en mer de Simon Leys à bord d'un derniers thoniers bretons à voile. Moi qui n'aime pas particulièrement les récits marins (certainement à cause de Moby Dick qui m'a traumatisée dans mon enfance), je ne demande plus qu'à lire d'autres livres tournant autour du thème de la mer.

A great Novella, well written and with a good rhythm about a shocking story that is worth knowing (surely for those who are interested in the Dutch Golden Age and the human nature like me). But it was too short - like reading fragments of characters and events and not going into depth. On the other hand, not sure if I would have read a full length novel about it...So all in all it was a very good read, surely as an introduction to the historical event. But for those who like their stories with more details and descriptions - go to the full length novel by Dash, which is also mentioned and recommended in Ley's novella.

You have to admire a writer who not only admits there is a more detailed book about his subject published, but actually recommends the book to his readers. Definitely someone who cares about his subject.

In this case, it is the sinking of the Batavia in 1629 and the subsequent madness that overtakes the survivors. This book was a very good overview but I have to admit, the details of the story are intriguing and would make a good Disney movie (if the violence was made more PG).

The additional story of the author's time on a Briton tuna fishing ship called the Prosper, one of the last sailing ships used for this purpose, was interesting, but a bit anticlimactic. From the title, I thought the Prosper also sank, but she did not. The tragedies with her were more specific to certain individuals.

A quick read, but worth it for people interested in sailing and ships.

Madre mía, lo he devorado. Es cortito, me lo pensaba leer en los ratitos de descanso entre correcciones de varios días pero no ha sido así, es el libro el que no me ha soltado, de verdad, ¡¡ha empezado él!!

A ver, es un librito de Simon Leys de un ensayo que no pudo ser y que cuenta la historia verídica del navío de la Compañía Neerlandesa de las Islas Orientales que naufragó en 1629 y del auténtico horror que vino después. Y encima el buen hombre te recomienda el libro que sí que fue y donde viene todo. Y ahora sólo tengo ganas de saber más de la historia, conseguir ese libro tochal (que en español está descatalogado: ¡noooooo!) y de leer más libros de marineros, ya sean de ensayo o ficción, de fantasía marina oscura, de volverme a ver Master and Commander... ay madre la que me ha liao el señor.

ספר ממש מעניין על פרשת האוניה בטאוויה, אוניית סחר הולנדית ענקית, שעלתה של שרטון ליד ארכיפלג קרוב לאוסטרליה, כאשר בין הניצולים מתפתחת עלילה בסגנון "בעל זבוב". המקרה ממש מזכיר סרט הוליוודי. לא ייאמן שקרה במציאות!
הספר התחבר לי לספרים "המיניאטורות" ו-"מוקף בפסיכופתים שקראתי לאחרונה, וגם מעלה מחשבות על הדמיון בין דמותו של קורנליס לבין דמויות היסטוריות כגון היטלר וסטאלין.

Great writing. The first half was a brief recounting of the little known wreck of the dutch ship Batavia and the barbaric, Lord of the flies-ish aftermath. The second half was the delightful Hemingway-esque record of the author’s summer aboard one of the last fishing boats under sail in Breton during the late 1950s.

Premier texte: le récit du naufrage du Batavia, mais surtout un superbe exemple de fair-play de la part de l'auteur. Pour reprendre la présentation de Victor-Schmara, qui a lancé le duo de livres en ring:

C’est quelque chose que je n’avais jamais vu. Un auteur réputé, Simon Leys (Belgique), envisage en 1985 d’écrire un livre - ici l’histoire vraie d’un naufrage au XVIIème siècle. Mais il tarde à le faire, et, dans l’intervalle, un autre auteur, Mike Dash (Grande-Bretagne), s’empare du même thème. Alors Leys change ses plans, rédige un court essai (70 pages) retraçant l’histoire, et finit sa préface avec un fair-play qu’on devrait citer dans les écoles :
« Enfin, Mike Dash vint. Avec son L’archipel des hérétiques, cet auteur-ci a vraiment mis dans le mille –et il ne me reste plus rien à dire. Dash démêle et organise pleinement les fils complexes des personnages et des événements ; il les situe dans leur contexte historique, et surtout, il a accompli un prodigieux travail de détective dans les archives hollandaises de l’époque. Après avoir lu et relu cette synthèse définitive, j’ai remisé une fois pour toutes la documentation et les notes, photos et croquis que j’avais glanés sur cette affaire dans les bibliothèques et sur le terrain : je n’en aurai plus jamais besoin. Et maintenant, en publiant les quelques pages qui suivent, mon seul souhait est qu’elles puissent vous inspirer le désir de lire son livre. »

Ce n'est donc pas un récit bien palpitant, plutôt une synthèse de l'histoire, comme une "mise en bouche" pour le livre de Mike Dash qui vaut le coup.

Mais ce n'est pas pour ça que j'ai enregistré ce livre, mais bien pour le deuxième récit du livre : Prosper, histoire courte mais suffisante, d'un "séjour" à bord d'un bâteau de pêche. L'auteur est allé partager le quotidien de pêcheurs de thons bretons (les pêcheurs, pas les thons), les pêcheurs "à l'ancienne", sur des bateaux à voile, comme il en existait déjà bien peu encore dans les années 60, et c'est beau, c'est vivant, plein de nostalgie et d'iode ... et d'alcool.
Les 4 étoiles de la notation vont à Prosper, et non aux naufragés...

El horror narrado con tal concisión y tal sobriedad expresiva que se multiplica hasta resultar insoportable. Este relato breve, donde no sobra -pero tampoco falta- ni una sola palabra narra el naufragio de un navío holandés, el Batavia, en 1629 y el reinado de terror instaurado sobre los supervivientes por un personaje atroz, el boticario Cornelisz, que se convierte en señor absoluto del resto de náufragos. Cornelisz no solo ejerce un poder despótico, sino que lo hace con una arbitrariedad absoluta, de manera que ni el completo sometimiento de sus vasallos les garantice conservar su vida. Este boticario no es un personaje excepcional y ninguna de sus decisiones contribuye a aumentar las posibilidades de supervivencia de los náufragos. ¿Por qué le obedecen entonces? ¿Por qué hay hombres que aceptan cometer en su nombre los crímenes más abyectos? En un primer momento, por respeto al orden establecido: es el superviviente de mayor gradación; pero, sobre todo, porque Cornelisz identifica y utiliza en su favor los atributos del poder: se apropia de la mejor tienda y del más espléndido uniforme, pergeña un simulacro de legalidad con comités formados por sus esbirros y su primer asesinato adopta una apariencia de legalidad: castiga a muerte a un marinero por robar un poco de vino, una sanción desproporcionada pero que cumple con los requisitos formales de un proceso judicial. A ojos de unos hombres traumatizados y acostumbrados a obedecer, Cornelisz comienza representando la continuidad del orden establecido, de la civilización... Sin embargo, esa ilusión dura muy poco. Cuando la barbarie se hace evidente, los desventurados náufragos están ya paralizados por el terror. ¿Pero qué cualidades permiten a Cornelistz mantener su autoridad frente a su cohorte de asesinos? A pesar de su excepcional crueldad, carece de presencia de ánimo y no es capaz de ejecutar con sus manos ninguno de los crímenes que ordena. En el texto se atribuye su liderazgo a su elocuencia, sus dotes de persuasión y el atractivo de una doctrina herética cuyos postulados hoy desconocemos.
En esta novelita están presentes temas con un largo recorrido en la literatura: civilización frente a barbarie, o la barbarie como espejo deformante de la civilización. Cornelisz es un Pol Pot, un Stalin, un Trujillo en su islote perdido. Inevitable recordar El señor de las moscas.
Todo ello en setenta páginas, y la sensación de que no es necesaria ni una más.

“El mar lava todos los crímenes de los hombres” Con esta frase, Simon Leys abre y cierra este fascinante y breve relato del naufragio del Batavia, buque mercante insignia de la Compañía Holandesa de las Indias Orientales (Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie - VOC) en 1629, y el desenlace de los tripulantes desde el naufragio hasta su llegada final a Java.

El relato repasa la brutalidad de Cornelisz, ex-boticario y prófugo de la justicia, quien organiza un motín posterior al naufragio, junto a otro puñado de secuaces, sometiendo y masacrando con una violencia terrible a los sobrevivientes del naufragio, hasta que Pelsaert, representante del armador, se embarca en una modesta embarcación hacia Java, y vuelve a rescatar a los sobrevivientes que quedan en este archipiélago de coral en las islas Houtman Abrolhos, al oeste de la costa de Australia.

No queda duda del imperio económico que la VOC, o su equivalente británico East India Company, lograron durante los siglos XVI y XVII, basando su éxito en el intercambio comercial marítimo con precarias condiciones tecnológicas, sin cartas de navegación, realizando aproximaciones a costas desconocidas, atravesando los océanos prácticamente a ciegas, sin poder calcular su posición con certeza.

En este contexto, la forma de aproximarse que toma el Batavia desde el Cabo de Buena Esperanza (Sudáfrica) hasta su destino final en Java, es tomar dirección sur hasta el paralelo 40 para aprovechar los fuertes vientos del oeste provenientes desde la Antártica, para luego estimar en base a la posición de las estrellas un viraje hacia el norte en dirección a su destino final, en vez de tomar la ruta en línea recta hacia Madagascar. Aun así, la velocidad promedio es de dos nudos (aproximadamente 4,5 kilómetros por hora)

Destaco dos cosas del autor, la primera es que Simon Leys pasa una temporada en el archipiélago, recopilando una gran cantidad de información, hasta que finalmente, luego de varios años decide publicar este libro. La segunda es que durante el proceso de publicación se da cuenta que Mike Dash publica "Batavia`s Graveyard", novela de más de 500 páginas relatando el naufragio. Simon Leys, en un acto de humildad, describe en el prólogo, que su único deseo al publicar estas pocas páginas (menos de 90), sean un incentivo para leer la obra de Dash.

«Una sociedad civilizada no es necesariamente una sociedad que tiene una proporción menor de individuos criminales y perversos (esta proporción es probablemente casi constante en todos los grupos humanos), sino aquella que simplemente les brinda menos oportunidades de manifestar y de satisfacer sus inclinaciones».

En 1629 una embarcación, bautizada como el «Batavia», naufragó en la costa de Australia occidental. Y es considerado el peor y más terrible de la historia.

Cualquiera pensaría que es ficción, una especie de «El señor de las moscas», pero con adultos.

Pero el hecho es real. Y en este libro, Simon Leys reseña lo que ocurrió y los hechos que, con el paso del tiempo y registros históricos, se fueron revelando para «entender» las acciones de sus tripulantes y sobrevivientes.

Tras chocar con un arrecife de coral, los 300 supervivientes lograron alcanzar una pequeña isla a menos de 2 kilómetros de distancia. Un par de días después, el comandante y un reducido grupo de hombres partieron en un pequeño bote en busca de ayuda.

Por otra parte, una gran parte de los tripulantes se quedó en el barco, emborrachándose y acabando con las provisiones, liderados por el fatídico protagonista de esta horrible historia: Jeronimus Cornelisz.

Este había ya pensado en armar un motín tiempo antes de que el barco naufragara. Tras la partida del comandante, Cornelisz y el grupo que había logrado captar para sus hazañas partieron a la isla Beacon.

Se encargó de confiscar todo tipo de armamento y tomar el poder.

Durante cinco meses (el tiempo que tardó en llegar finalmente la ayuda), Cornelisz “mandó” en la isla. Exilió a muchos de los náufragos a otra isla, para después asesinarlos. Otros fueron golpeados hasta la muerte, abandonados con enfermedades, entre otros horrores.

El hecho más terrible es que Cornelisz no cometió ningún asesinato por mano propia (inclusos cuando lo intentó, falló). Pero su instinto asesino y sus intenciones de acabar con todas las personas que pudiera sin ningún tipo de objetivo más que hacerse con un motín hicieron de este naufragio el más terrible de la historia.

¿Quién es capaz de resistirse a un libro cuya portada cubierta es un barco de vela clásico, zozobrante, combatiendo la tempestad? Yo no, desde luego.

Para mí Simon Leys tiene dos méritos. El primero, este su librito se erige desde ya en piedra importante de la pirámide -no sé si egipcia, maya o sublunar- de la literatura portátil. El segundo, hacer que un libro y un autor -"La tragedia del Batavia" de Mike Dash- que nadie conocía, y que habían pasado sin pena ni gloria hasta el librito mínimo de Leys, en muy poco tiempo pase a ser pieza codiciada y vehículo en especulación en el mercadillo librófilo de la segunda mano.

Esto último, además, denota modestia y gratitud. Quiero decir: Leys podría haer tirado de soberbia y haber escrito su libro soñado durante años igualmente, echarlo al ruedo y ver qué tal suerte corría. En lugar de ello, una vez comprobado que el libro de Dash no sólo se le ha adelantado, sino que cuenta todo lo que tiene que contar: Leys decide renunciar a su libro y en su lugar escribe un "tráiler" sobre el libro de otro, para que nosotros podamos disfrutar también de esa historia que a él obsesionó durante tantos años.

Estos actos a la par de altruísmo y renuncia son poco comunes en Literatura. Así que por mi parte nada más: dos veces bravo.

Sin ninguna referencia compre este pequeño libro, francamente lo hice porque en la contraportada se lee que en 1629 un barco holandés naufraga cerca del contiene australiano, y que la mayoría de los náufragos sobrevive, pero un tal Cordelisz es el personaje malvado. Y solo con esa información decidí comprarlo. En la primera parte el autor señala que la idea del libro ya fue realizada y publicada, que sería un despropósito publicar algo que ya no es original, sin embargo igual decide hacer una especia de resumen de su idea para ser una especie de promoción al libro mencionado. El libro en forma de relato es exactamente un resumen de algo que iba a ser a todas luces el resultado de una investigación más amplia, con documentación respectiva que sea el respaldo de todo. Al final el relato es dinámico, llega a abarcar los aspectos fundamentales de la obra que nunca vio la luz, y tiene rasgos de reportaje por momentos , lo más interesante es como trata de explicar cuáles son las razones que lo empujan a cometer actos tan crueles a Cordelisz cuando es un personaje que en primera instancia esta más cerca a la muerte que el resto, la consideración que le tuvieron después del abandono de los altos mandos y su súbita escalada para tomar el poder absoluto de la situación.

Not a patch on Batavia’s Graveyard, but the narrative does corroborate the more detailed account and add some first hand exploration of the site, which adds a generous star.

It was a small book - 113 pages and padded on the page so in reality it is barely pushing three figures.

I take two exceptions to this book, but thankfully it was a few quid.

1. Generalising narrative, throwing events out with little attempt at highlighting evidence, which is quick to read but very lightweight.

2. Of the 113 pages, only 59 pages deal with Batavia. The rest are a journal account on a fishing boat in the author’s younger days. An elegiac essay it is described but as a reader I find it significantly misrepresentative with it not being mentioned Batavia is only half of a tiny book. Nothing on the cover or Amazon’s blurb at first glance about a self indulgent journal account.

Actually that miffs me off even more writing it, and I revise it to 1 star for corroboration purposes only. Straight to charity shop.

The author was going to write a great book on Batavia, collecting notes for years, until, one Mike Dash, another author, wrote a terrific book on Batavia.

Batavia is about a Dutch ship back in around 1629, who sailed from Amsterdam to Cape Town, then was supposed to sail to Jakarta Indonesia, but was shipwrecked in the archipelagos of west Australia. Of the 4 islands, on one island, a man with his henchman killed hundreds of people in cold blood, until finally the captain who went to Jakarta, came back to the rescue and restored order (hanged the criminals).

Much courage and condolenses to Simon Leys, he has found what he wanted to do, and encourages all readers to read Dash's book for details, instead, he writes a 50+ page on the Batavia ordeal.

So we are left to choose, a 300 page detailed book from Mike Dash, or 50+ pages from Simon Leys? Well, I might challenge Dash's book in the future, but for now, the 50 page version from Leys will suffice.

Un gran relato de un episodio histórico y a su vez aterrador acaecido en junio de 1629 es una síntesis de un naufragio ocurrido en las costas de Australia, escrito casi en forma de bitácora y desarrollado sin censura el abandono de la civilización para dar rienda suelta a lo mas bajo del ser humano dirigido por un personaje psicópata que a través de su persuasión tomo control de los náufragos sometiendo a maltratos, violencia sexual y asesinatos.

“ Una sociedad civilizada no es necesariamente que tiene una proporción menor de individuos criminales y perversos ( esta proporción es probablemente constante en todos los grupos humanos), si no aquellas que simplemente les brinda menos oportunidades de manifestar y satisfacer sus inclinaciones”

Un pequeño manifestó que me golpeó profundamente de como la barbarie y locura puede tomar a un grupo de hombres sin las ataduras de una sociedad civilizada.

The author masterfully blends historical narrative with meticulous research, bringing to life the 1629 shipwreck. The book vividly portrays the ship’s commander, the psychopathic mutineer, and other key figures, adding depth to the tragic events.

This book somehow explores the moral and ethical dimensions of the disaster, prompting reflections on human nature and leadership under extreme duress.

While some sections may slow down with detailed descriptions, the overall narrative is compelling and thought-provoking. This was an interesting mix of maritime history and true crime, highlighting the resilience and darker aspects of human nature. A powerful and well-crafted historical account.

Also, it mentions another book about the same story (Batavia's Graveyard by Mike Dash), and I'm right now adding it to my TBR list.

Es como un amigo que se sienta contigo y te dice: “Déjame te cuento una historia”.
Una historia que, aunque fue real, parece sacada de una pesadilla. No necesita exagerar para mostrar el horror: el drama se queda grabado en la memoria.

El libro cuenta cómo un barco encalló —de verdad, no es ficción— y cómo, poco a poco, la desesperación y la ambición convirtieron a los hombres en bestias, a los don nadie en héroes, a las mujeres en cosas, y a los humanos… en cadáveres.

Sinceramente, Spalomero es de esos libros que, como Cándido de Voltaire, te dejan pensando si de verdad vivimos en el mejor de los mundos posibles.
Te muestra la irracionalidad brutal del ser humano, y sin embargo, en medio de la oscuridad, grita por un sentido.
Por un héroe.

Pero ¿quién era Torrentius y qué pensaba realmente? Las fuentes de la época concuerdan en describirle como un personaje de una inmoralidad escandalosa; parecía sentir placer en ofender deliberadamente todos los principios de la gente decente y respetable. El sacrilegio, la blasfemia, la lujuria y la ebriedad eran sus pasatiempos favoritos. ¿Reflejaban sus chocantes declaraciones unas condiciones filosóficas, o simplemente la sardónica diversión que sacaba de oponerse a las estrechas convenciones de la sociedad burguesa? ¿Creía lo que profesaba, o cultivaba la paradoja con el exclusivo fin de hacer enfurecerse a los imbéciles?

The advertising blurb for this book is virtually as detailed and graphic as its contents. In other words, this is an author who tells, not shows the nightmare that the passengers of the Batavia endured. Quite disappointing and more on the level of a textbook description.
The second half of the book is an essay recounting Leys's personal experience on a fishing boat, which was more affecting, but not my cup of tea.

Reconociendo que me pierden las novelas y no ficciones de barcos, aquí tenemos en muy pocas páginas de todo: largas travesías con precarias técnicas de navegación, motines, naufragios, motines de los motines... Una gozada consensada que deja ganas de mucho más. Sobre la propia historia y algún spin off.
